the City of Kingston offers many layers to explore. Founded in 1652,

in the foothills of the Catskills along the Hudson River, Kingston is one of the origi-nal large, early Dutch settlements in the New World (the other two settlements be-came New York City and Albany). Initially called the town of Wiltwyck, it eventually merged with the neighboring port town of Rondout, and renamed ‘Kingston’ in honor of the British sovereign. Ironically, Kingston is where independent-minded colonists wrote the New York State Constitution in 1777, and where the state’s first capi-tal was established. It was then promptly burned to the ground by the invading British army! Luckily, the city was quickly rebuilt and today many of the original stone structures remain.Kingston’s unique role in history did not stop after the 18th century. It became an important commercial and transpor-tation hub, especially after the open-ing of the groundbreaking, 108-mile D & H (Delaware and Hudson) Canal. Canals, and later railroads, helped to maintain Kingston’s important role in the expanding nation. Kingston was an im-portant source of agriculture, timber, coal, bluestone slate, bricks, and cement for the growing nation. In the 20th century, Kingston became home to technology businesses, and most recently, home to many nationally recognized creative-based specialty

manufacturers. Each commercial wave of history has made its mark on Kingston, evidenced today by its fascinating and diverse architecture and landscape.Today, Kingston has a creative and dy-namic community, featuring a diverse selection of galleries, festivals, concerts, public art displays, and more. There are several neighborhoods to explore, each with its own character – Uptown and the Stockade District, Midtown, and the Rondout Waterfront. For those who love to shop, Kingston has many charming boutiques, stores, and antique shops to explore. Gourmands of every kind can revel in Kingston’s growing and diverse range of restaurants, many retaining local graduates of the nearby world-renowned Culinary Institute of America.

Kingston’s Uptown neighborhood is where visitors will find many fine examples of America’s early colonial history. The first permanent settlement was built in 1652. Governor Stuyvesant ordered the original stockade built in 1658 to protect the early settlers from local Indian attacks. Originally called Wiltwyck, Uptown Kingston is the largest remaining example of early Dutch settlement in New York State. In 1777, Uptown Kingston’s Senate House is where the first capital of New York was established, and visitors can explore many historic sites and museums that represent that era.

Uptown Kingston today is a thriv-ing neighborhood with many shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, music venues, farmers’ markets, festivals and more. Though abundant public parking is available, the area is best enjoyed on foot. It boasts a highly diverse range of architectural details for visitors to explore, a chronology of American architecture that spans four centuries: from the early Dutch and English, to Federalist, Georgian, Greek Revival, Victorian, Romanesque, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Art Deco and Contemporary.

2015 Tour dates: First Saturday of the Month, May 2, June 6, July 4, August 1, September 5, and October 3.Enjoy a guided walking tour of the largest intact early Dutch settlement in New York State and the neighborhood where New York State was born in 1777. View a treasury of centuries-old architecture as you walk the heart of the original stockaded village of Kingston whose street plan was designed by Provincial-Governor Peter Stuyvesant in 1658. View a large cluster of native limestone houses built by descendants of the early settlers. Visit the courthouse site where the New York State Constitution

was drafted, and the gravesite of George Clinton, New York’s first elected governor, in the Old Dutch Church burying ground. The tour concludes with a visit to the interior of the circa 1812 Fred J. Johnston House.

Old Dutch Church 72 WALL STREET

Often referred to as “The Cathedral of Kingston,” the Old Dutch Church, a National Historic Landmark, was a part of the Dutch Colonial Village of Wiltwyck; the original church structure was built on the present site in 1660. The present church structure is the third to be sited on the same plot of land. The church maintains a museum that houses many historical records and artifacts, including a letter from George Washington. The cemetery beside the church dates to 1600’s and has 77 Revolutionary War soldiers buried there including Vice President and NY Governor George Clinton. The Persen House, named after its longest resident Matthewis Persen (1739-1819), was built in five phases from 1661 to 1922. The house has witnessed the entire history of Kingston and even pre-dates the formation of Ulster County. It was burned

at least twice, saw wars and revolution and was home to doctors, tailors, grocers, druggists and innkeepers. As you walk through the Persen House you walk through time and history comes alive! A significant historical fact – the Matthewis Persen House is on the only street corner in the U.S. with a pre-Revolutionary building still located on each of the four corners. The house is open Tuesday through Saturday 10am-4pm from May 23 through September 5, then Saturdays from 10am-2pm from September 12 through November 21. Admission is free. The Senate House State Historic Site 296 FAIR STREET

In the fall of 1777 the elected representatives of rebellious New Yorkers convened in Kingston to form a new state government. New York’s first capital was born. The session, New York’s first Senate, met in a simple stone house of a local merchant. Now part of a complex of five buildings, the Senate House tells the story of New York’s early government, and gives a taste of life in the Hudson Valley 200 years ago. Ulster County Courthouse 285 WALL STREET

The birthplace of New York State, the Ulster County Courthouse was the home to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1777. Written and adopted in the Courthouse on April 20, 1777, this Constitution became the model for our United States Constitution. It was here that our first freely elected Governor, George Clinton, took the oath of office, the first official act of New York State. The current Courthouse, built in 1818, sits on the same site as the original Courthouse erected in 1683 and is the oldest property in the United States to house a public building. Within its walls noted abolitionist Sojourner Truth won the freedom of her son, Peter, becoming the first African American woman to successfully challenge a white man in a

Volunteer Firemen’s Hall & Museum 265 FAIR STREET

Housed in the 1857 Wiltwyck Fire Station, it is a wonderful example of the evolution of a firehouse from the operation of horse-drawn equipment to the operation of late 20th century fire equipment. The Kingston Fire Department can trace its origin back to 1754 when a fire engine was ordered from England. The Wiltwyck Fire House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This “Little Gem” of a Museum is “child friendly” and children will receive their own fire helmet. The hours of operation are April through October Fridays 11am-3pm, Saturdays 10am-4pm, and June through August we are also open Wednesdays & Thursdays 11am-3pm. Catskill Mountain Railroad 149 AARON COURT

The Catskill Mountain Railroad is a heritage railroad based in Kingston offering fun and scenic train rides from Kingston to the scenic Catskills. Special themed rides, such as The Polar Express, Peanuts Easter Beagle, Pumpkin Patch Express, Chuggington and others are offered throughout the season. The Caboose Visitors Center WASHINGTON AVENUE

The red ‘Caboose’ is located on Washington Avenue near the NYS Thruway, and is open seven days a week, Memorial Day through the end of October, 9am-5pm. There is a kiosk with brief information for when the booth is closed. Inside the booth visitors will find material regarding the City of Kingston and all of Ulster County including travel guides, maps, brochures, and information on dining, lodging, museums, recreation and event calendars. City Hall 420 BROADWAY

City Hall is a red brick building in a late Victorian architectural style dating to 1873. It sits on what had been the boundary between the villages of Kingston and Rondout prior to their merger to form the City of Kingston. It was originally designed to closely resem-ble the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, and is on the National Register of His-toric Places. City Hall often has various works of art on public display. www.kingston-ny.gov

Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) 601 BROADWAY

UPAC is a Classical Revival theater built in 1927 as a combination vaudeville house/ movie palace. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is today

a premier non-profit performing arts venue in the Hudson Valley. Owned and managed by the Bardavon, it regularly presents a diverse line-up of national and international headliners in music, dance, theater and more. Kingston Library is more than just books. Ongoing workshops, classes, lectures and discussions for all ages are scheduled. Midtown Kingston reflects a history of industry and expansion. Following the opening of the railroad in the mid 19th century, which ran between (Uptown) Kingston and Rondout, there was a natural growth towards the new transportation line. When the two villages merged, City Hall and other municipal features were built in this newest part of the city. Midtown is where Kingston’s increasingly active arts district is located and where visitors will find an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, music venues, restaurants, specialized manufacturing (many related to the arts), microbreweries, city government offices, Kingston Hospital, and many fine examples of Victorian and early 20th century architecture.

The Rondout neighborhood is located on the shore of Rondout Creek near where it meets the Hudson River. Initially a key port for the shipment of timber and agriculture to the colonies and beyond, the area boomed with the opening of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1828; it became a trade hub for coal from Northeast Pennsylvania, bluestone from the Catskill Mountains, cement from Rosendale, and bricks made from local clay. The area grew so rapidly that it incorporated as the Village of Rondout in 1849, and by 1872 it merged with the then-village of Kingston to form today’s city. By the time the canal closed in 1899, the port area featured buildings in all the 19th century architectural styles.

Charmingly framed by the Kingston-Port Ewen Suspension Bridge, built in the 1920s, the neighborhood is referred to locally as the Rondout or the Strand (sometimes known as ‘Downtown’ as well). The Kingston Marina is located in the Rondout, a great place to book a ride on one of several tour boats of the Hudson River, and view the Rondout Lighthouse. The neighborhood is invitingly walkable and has a waterfront park, many charming restaurants, boutiques, and captivating architecture. There are several museums, art galleries, antique shops, and gift shops to explore. The Kingston Heritage Area Visitors Center is also in the Rondout Waterfront District. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Dedicated to the preservation of Hudson River Valley maritime history, and commu-nities and industries along its shores; late 19th and early 20th centuries emphasized. Provides educational tours/programs, his-torical exhibits, collections, visiting heri-tage vessels, events and festivals, lectures/films, gift shop, docking, research/archival library, Kingston Home Port and Education Center serving as winter port for Clearwa-ter. The Trolley Museum of New York 89 EAST STRAND

The Trolley Museum offers weekend rides in their 1925 trolley car, from TR Gallo Park on the Historic Rondout Waterfront to Kingston Point by the beach and back. See exhibits and displays at their visitors center about trolleys and related history. The museum is open weekends and holidays from May 9th (Mothers Day) to Oct. 31 (Halloween), Noon to 5pm, and legal holidays including Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Columbus Day, plus special events. The Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History99-101 BROADWAY

(Under construction – contact museum prior to visitation) The Reher Center is a project of the Jewish Federation of Ulster County, which is undertaking an extensive renovation and restoration of an old bakery building at 99-101 Broadway in the Historic Rondout Waterfront District. The bakery building will be open for tours during ‘Night Market’ events, the third Friday of every month from May through October, 6-9pm. While the Reher Bakery building is under construction, visit its core exhibit,

the Burning of Kingston is a weekend-long celebration of American history, bravery, sacrifice and resilience. In October

1777, during the American Revolutionary War, Kingston was targeted for retaliation by the British following the Continental Army’s first major victory at the Battle of Saratoga. Infuriated,

soldiers from British-captured New York City, sailed up the Hudson River to take retaliation against the biggest colonial target in the area

– Kingston, the new capital of New York State. Landing at Kingston Point, the red coats marched along the Rondout Creek and up to the Stockade area (Uptown Kingston area), burning houses along the way. A small naval skirmish also took place along the Rondout Creek.

In advance of the arrival of the British, some brave colonists, including Deputy County Clerk Christopher Tappen, saved key documents and ledgers of the county and new state capital. Some of the locals engaged the British with guerilla fighting; however, most of the city was abandoned ahead of their approach. After only a few hours of work, the British burned down over 300 buildings, and left Kingston in ruins. However, the resilient and brave residents returned and quickly rebuilt.

Throughout the Burning of Kingston weekend, many businesses, restaurants, museums, organizations, and entertainment venues participate in fun and different ways. Many local businesses will be offering discounts for those dressed in Colonial-era costume. Be sure to visit Kingston’s website for the most up-to-date event information.

October 16, Friday Evening7pm - Re-enactment of Colonial Kingston “Committee of Safety” meeting at the historic Persen House Museum located at the “four corners” of the Stockade District. Highlights: town residents hear news of Burgoyne’s defeat at Saratoga, express fears of British invasion and, and then learn that a British fleet lies in the Hudson River off Kingston Point.

October 17, Saturday Morning11am - British invasion begins with landing at Kingston Point Park on the Hudson River, greeted by small resistance force of Colonists.

October 17, Saturday Afternoon2pm - British troop re-enactors will gather at Academy Green prior to advancing on Uptown Stockade district. Soldiers of the King will advance along the streets of the Stockade District, opposed by remnants of the local militia. Deputy County Clerk Christpher Tappen flees the Persen House with final county records as British Advance on Persen House. 3pm - Following the afternoon’s fighting, Kingston’s Mayor will be put on trial for treason. The trial will be held in the park adjacent to the Persen House. Witnesses will be called and a decision rendered. The outcome is in doubt.

6:30-8pm - Tours of re-enactors camps with impromptu lectures on the Revolution/Rebellion in Forsyth Park.

7pm - The Grand Ball will be held Saturday evening in the Common Council Chambers at Kingston City Hall. Instruction in 18th century dance, with live music, will commence at 7 pm with the Ball itself beginning a little later in the evening. Both re-enactors and the community are invited, and since instruction is provided, one does not have to be familiar with the dance styles to participate. 18th century dress is encouraged but not required, and there will be refreshments available. The entire event is free of charge.

Sunday, October 189am - At Forsyth Park, re-enactors camps open to the public with Assembly, safety inspections, company drills, and demonstrations.

12:30pm - The ‘Battle of Upper Forsyth Park’ – a tactical demonstration showing American and British troops battle.
