CANCELLATION POLICYAll cancellation requests must be recieved in writing 5 days prior to the first day of the session to recieve a full credit or refund.

NON RESIDENTSNon-residents incur a $10 fee for all programs. Registration begins May 19.

Introduction to Drawing: Thursdays Aug 6 - Aug 27 | 7 - 9:30 p.m. | McKay Art Centre | Glenn BernabeThe perfect class for ones who have always wanted to learn to draw but were afraid to take the plunge. Even if you have little to no instruction, you will learn to turn a blank page into your personal artistic statement as professional artist Glenn Bernabe teaches you the fundamentals of form, perspective, proportion, contour and composition in this four week class. Students will use conte, charcoal and ink and be introduced to specific exercises designed to develop drawing skills. The class will also include tours of the gallery to study from sketches in our permanent collection by one of Canada’s finest portrait artists, F.H. Varley.Barcode: 264391 Cost: $100.57

Introduction to Photography: Wednesdays Aug 5 - Aug 26 | 7 - 9:30 p.m. | McKay Art Centre This introductory course by a professional photographer explores photographic techniques, and how you can express yourself through the camera, to share ideas and inner feelings. Participants will become familiar with composition techniques so your image will get the ‘wow’ factor and you will investigate how light affects form, colour and composition; how to choose the right shooting angle and create perspective; how to look at light; and how to best use light and shadow. Get to know the workings of your digital SLR camera to best utilize this unique instrument so you can capture that moment in time! All supplies will be discussed in the first class so you need not purchase them ahead of time. Introduction to Watercolour: Tuesdays July 7 - July 28 | 7 - 9:30 p.m. | McKay Art Centre Learn the basics of watercolour painting - colour, brush techniques, and other methods of applying the paint. Emphasis will be placed on solid drawing, composition, and colour theory. No experience required. Barcode: 264385 Cost: $100.57

Mixed Media & Collage: Wednesdays July 8 - July 29 | 7 - 9:30 p.m. | McKay Art Centre Mixed Media and Collage affords tremendous opportunities for artistic growth and creative exploration. Drawing materials, paints, papers and found objects will be manipulated and/or combined in the creation of a body of work. The principles of composition and design, surface quality, colour and value systems, imagery and concepts will be discussed to guide you in your creative process.Barcode: 264386 Cost: $100.57

Workshops and Lectures

Creative Writing Workshop, Mapping Ourselves: Thursdays June 25 - July 16 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. | Varley Art Gallery | Sheniz JanmohamedThis creative writing workshop will involve fun, interactive and independent writing exercises that will incorporate themes of identity, belonging, and a sense of home. Participants will be introduced to art/ writing forms including found poetry, nature/land art and nature journaling, informed by the artwork in the exhibition Traversive Territories. They will have the opportunity to create poems and short prose pieces in a supportive environment. No previous experience required. Barcode: 264384 Cost: $75.00

Recording the Moment: Sundays August 9 & 16 | 1- 4 p.m. | Varley Art Gallery | Judith LivingstonIdeal for the beginner to intermediate student, this class is a perfect end to a summer day. Students will be taught drawing and observational skills and the usage of watercolour crayons, pencils and paints. A collection of small pencil and ink sketches, enhanced with water colour washes, will be created. The workshop will coincide with the Blossom and Bloom Outdoor Market and the Markham Jazz Festival. Curator/Artist Talk for Traversive Territories: Thursday, May 28 | 7- 9 p.m. | Varley Art Gallery | Judith LivingstonExhibition curator Corinna Ghaznavi will lead an insightful walk-through Traversive Territories. Sarindar Dhaliwal will give an illustrated talk about her three-decades long practice and discuss the use of narrative, text and stories in her work. Soheila Esfahani will examine the notion of ‘portable culture’ and how her recent installation The Immigrants: Homage to F.H. Varley investigate this concept. She will discuss the participants’ responses to her invitation to provide an image representing their culture. The audience is encouraged to respond to this installation by sharing their experiences with regards to “ one’s culture”. Barcode: N/A Cost: Free
