SUMMER FUN IS AN ARTS CENTER TRADITION!

Summer camps at the Arts Center began in 1974 when the first

Arts Day Camp provided extraordinary opportunities for youngsters

to interact with professional visual, literary, and performing artists.

We’re proud to present the 41st summer of Arts Day Camp along

with an expanded list of camps and classes in our continuing goal

to transform lives and strengthen communities through the arts.

Advance registration is required for all classes, camps, and workshops. Early registration is advised as classes and camps can fill quickly. A limited number of scholarships are available for all classes and camps. Places will be held only upon receipt of full tuition. Tuitions are refundable (unless noted) minus a $15 processing fee per class up to seven days before a class is to begin. Tuitions are nonrefundable after that time unless class limits are reached or a program is canceled. Prospective students are encouraged to sign up early as classes without a minimum of students may be canceled. Supplies and equipment costs are included in the tuition unless otherwise noted.

Discover a variety of seasonal hands-on activities and materials to foster learning through creativity. $12 per child ($10 member), free for accompanying adults

TODDLER ARTS DAY CAMP—Age 2–3 (with an adult) Camp I: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, June 2, 4, 6 Camp II: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, August 4, 6, 8 10:00–11:00 a.m.Invite your child to discover and create in an open-studio environment full of arts activities designed especially for early learners. The Three Little Pigs will inspire projects using a variety of materials, not just straw, sticks, and bricks! $36 per child/adult pair ($29 member)

MINI ARTS DAY CAMP—Age 4–6 Camp I: Mondays–Fridays, June 16–27 Camp II: Mondays–Fridays, July 14–25 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Classic children’s literature comes to life through the arts. The Three Little Pigs will inspire exploration of construction. Campers will talk about the role of the wolf as a bully and retell the story in their journals. Songs, creative movement, costumes, and props will be developed to retell the story in a final presentation.$250 ($200 member)

The Arts Center Preschool supports early learning through the arts and creativity. Children explore the exhibitions, attend performances, and learn and create through the arts and play. This unique learning environment furthers development in alignment with the Wisconsin Early Model Learning Standards. ARTVENTURE SPECIALTY CAMPSDelve into a particular creative medium (whether it’s food, clay, or animation) in these specialty camps designed to stretch your creativity as you hone your skills.

ARTVENTURE: DRAWING AND PAINTING—AGE 7–12Monday–Friday, June 16–20, 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Create a portfolio of drawings and paintings in response to what you see and imagine when exploring the exhibitions. Learn about color, composition, shape, line, value, and texture using pencils, pastels, charcoal, and paint! Instructor: Andrea Andersen / $82 ($65 member)

ARTVENTURE: COMICS AND ILLUSTRATION—Age 11–17Monday–Friday, June 16–20, 1:00–3:30 p.m.Get a handle on the basics of effective visual storytelling using traditional illustration tools—pencils, paper, watercolor, and ink. Character design, cartooning, and the formal elements of comics will be covered. Students may bring in their own laptops for individualized instruction in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.Instructor: Eric Zimmermann / $82 ($65 member)

**ARTVENTURE: SPONTANEOUS MOVEMENTMonday–Friday, June 23–27Session I: Age 7–12, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Session II: Age 13–17, 12:30–2:00 p.m. Become more articulate, dynamic, and daring in your dance. This class will introduce dancers to the art of spontaneous movement. Create expressive dance sequences in response to the installations in the Arts Center’s galleries. ARTVENTURE: CREATIVE COOKING—Age 7–15 Session I: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, June 23, 25, and 27 Session II: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, July 7, 9, and 11Session III: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, August 18, 20, and 2211:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.Learn to incorporate locally grown produce from the Sheboygan farmers’ market into seasonal recipes planned by chef Marilyn Montemayor. ARTVENTURE: INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS—Age 7–12 Mondays and Wednesdays, June 23–July 9, 1:00–3:00 p.m.Smush and shape wet clay as you build pieces by hand. Experiment with a variety of imaginative decorative methods that make your work even more individual. Then, learn about firing and ways to add to your creation after firing. $120 ($96 member)

ARTVENTURE: ANIMATION—Age 10–15Mondays–Fridays, July 7–18, 1:00–3:30 p.m. Explore the art of stop-motion claymation and other animation techniques. **ARTVENTURE: MODERN/JAZZ/HIP-HOP—Age 7–12Monday–Friday, July 14–18, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Learn the basic techniques of modern, jazz, and hip-hop dance and move to a new beat! A creative exploration of dance elements such as time and space will expand your range of abilities. 2-D EXPLORATION: 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.Discover the creative potential of printmaking, photography, and a variety of drawing and painting media. Develop a series of individual works of art that can be combined into a whole.

3-D EXPLORATION: 1:00–3:30 p.m.Create individual and collaborative sculptures using unconventional materials and techniques inspired by works in the Arts Center galleries. FAMILY FESTIVAL: EGYPT

Saturday, April 26, 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.Celebrate the traditions of Egyptian culture with performances, art-making activities, demonstrations, storytelling, and ethnic food. Known for the Red Sea coast, the River Nile, Giza pyramids, and the Great Sphinx, Egypt is home to one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations. $8 ($6 member/full-time student through age 21)There is a nominal extra charge for food.

EGGSTRAVAGANZA FAMILY WORKSHOP

Saturday, April 12, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Bring your eggs and turn them into original works of art in this lively studio session. We provide all the decorating materials and instruction needed to make it easy! This special workshop, full of fun activities, is for adults and children age five and older. You may drop in anytime during the scheduled session. Bring 18 eggs (12–14 hard-boiled and 4–6 blown). Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.$10 ($8 member)

THINK AHEAD TO FALL YOUTH DANCE SCHOOL-YEAR PROGRAM

YOUTH DANCE 2014/2015 Registration Opens July 1The youth dance program runs throughout the school year, September–May. Katie Hammer and Molly King instruct the classes.

Mini and Pre-Ballet classes instill a love of dance in children age 3–6 by introducing creative movement, rhythm, and ballet class etiquette. Ballet I and II emphasize the foundations of ballet while including rhythm, coordination, creative movement, and barre work. Level III, Advanced, and Modern Dance build on ballet technique, broaden dancers’ movement vocabulary, and expand their creative repertoire.

BEGINNING METALSMITHINGTuesdays, April 1–May 6, 6:00–8:00 p.m.Beginning students will explore the fundamentals of metalsmithing, including sawing, filing, forging, texturing, and soldering. Each student will design and fabricate several jewelry projects. Practice metals are included in tuition. SILK PAINTING EXPERIMENTATIONSaturday, May 17, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.Learn the beautiful art of silk painting. Participants will experiment with variations of the Japanese shibori technique of painting and dyeing cloth. Painting texture and color on a silk scarf will be achieved by folding, sewing tucks, twisting, and pipe wrapping using bottle caps, corks, and other odds and ends. Note that the scarf may be wet at the end of class; scarves will be mailed to students when dry. Instructor: Patty Aker$36 ($32 member)

LINOCUT BOOTCAMP: WEEKEND WORKSHOPSaturday and Sunday, May 24–25, 12:30–3:30 p.m.Immerse yourself in the art of linoleum-cut printmaking. Learn about the history and background of this technique. COLLAGE TECHNIQUES ONE-DAY WORKSHOPSaturday, August 2, 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.mExplore the world of collage techniques and give your creative outlet new depth. SILK SAMPLER WORKSHOPSaturday, September 6, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and either Sunday, September 7, or Sunday, September 14, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. Participants will paint small squares of silk to experiment with different textures and techniques. These can be integrated into a unique wall hanging, a piece of wearable art, or into an art quilt. The Sunday session of instruction will include the silk square finishing process. AN EXPLORATION IN PORCELAIN WITH SANDRA BYERS Saturday and Sunday, April 26–27, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.Two-time Arts/Industry resident and respected artist Sandra Byers (WI) returns to the Arts Center for an exploration of porcelain. Participants will use pinching, hand-building, and carving techniques to create sculptural forms out of translucent, bright white porcelain from Australia.$150 ($130 member)

GUIDED TOURS OF THE EXHIBITIONSExplore the Arts Center’s critically acclaimed exhibitions with a knowledgeable guide. Tours can be scheduled for groups of ten or more (from preschool students through senior citizens) and are designed to meet the needs and interests of the group, whether beginning art viewers or experienced art collectors. Visits can include a hands-on, art-making activity and a tour of the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, part of the Arts Center’s collection of works by art-environment builders. M.I.K.E. Record your songs or stories with M.I.K.E. this summer! M.I.K.E. is a digital recording studio and a dynamic public sculpture built in 2006 by artists Richard Saxton and Stuart Hyatt in collaboration with over 30 community members. Recording sessions are available throughout the summer and into fall (weather permitting). Times are available by appointment. Contact Angela Ramey at the Arts Center to book your session.

Programs are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00–11:30 a.m., July 7, 16, 21, and 30, and August 4, 13, 18, and 27.
