MATCH REPORTS

MPLR vs Footscray Rd 18

The final game of the season made way for the departure of Cashey and Brad, the two most important and two of the three more senior members of the reserves team. However, the team had to see out the final game for these two-loved members of the team as an opportunity to give them the send-off that they deserved.

The game was one full of emotion and after the splendiferous discovery of a pumped up soccer ball in the warm up, we knew we were in for a good day. Emotions being at their height at the first whistle, tempers flared with Footscray being a player down after two minutes of the game. While Footscray appeared fierier, our senior heads remained composed and then the maestro Tom “Snippy” Sinclair slotted one of his two goals into the net.

Next came a twist when the Footscray unit managed to sneak a goal past the formidable Matty Cummins. After the Footscray goal, Goony pounced on an opportunity in the attacking D, which saw him blast the ball into the side netting, and from there the 1st half held a lot of to and fro with no conversion and we went into the break 2-1.

After a halftime spritz from our coach Cashey and our skipper Brad, we came out all cylinders

MPLR report continues…………. blaring, but the Bulldogs showed that they were up for the fight by scoring a goal off a short corner. From, that point forward the game was ours, with the last 15 minutes of the game beingour best of the season, Jarni almost managed to overtake Stewart as our top scorer falling only a couple of goals short. Tom “The Snip” Sinclair managed to score another and his third of the season, closing out the game well.

The song was sung loud as ever with Cashey in the middle, as Brad left the sad news of his retirement for after the game. However, although Brad and Cashey will be sorely missed, we wish them all the best with the next steps in their life and hope to put on a show for them as they watch from the sidelines in 2016.

MPB vs Powerhouse Rd 18 (and Rds 16 & 17)

It’s been a big August for the Pennant B boys culminating in the best half of hockey the team has played all season. To make finals the team had to win their last 3 games - no mean feat in a very competitive grade this year. First up was a tricky encounter against Powerhouse at the SNHC in round 16. Losing to them earlier in the year provided a spur and highlighted the importance starting well & scoring early goals. Paul Valenti impressed with a dominating display in the midfield and Adrian Kimber, in his final game for the season, played a powerful role up front. Goals from both of the Duncans and Johnny McMahon were the difference & despite not keeping a clean sheet it was a strong display from all in the back line with Powerhouse only having a handful of attacking opportunities. The boys ended up 4-1 winners.

A trip out to Knox on an early Sunday afternoon was next for the boys in blue in round 17. Despite periods of lost concentration the end result was a scrappy 3-2 win. Johnny McMahon’s never say die attitude was crucial and his excellent deflection from an Ang Romas circle penetration proved to be the difference in the end. Andre ‘Doc’ Roberts also added to the score sheet for the first time this year with an important PC goal. Despite the win the boys knew they would have to lift if we had a chance to beat 2nd place Waverley in the final round and secure a finals berth.

MPB report continues………….

So it all came down to the round 18 game against Waverley. The only team that we hadn’t beaten all season and 10 minutes in, we were facing a 3-0 deficit. The team started to settle down as half time approached and this resulted in a goal for MCC.

Going to into the half time break 3-1 down in a must win game, strong words and a willingness to reset our focus was needed. A finals berth was on the line and this demanded a huge effort if we were going to play next week. The post half time resurgence started with star young forward Liam Honour applying massive defensive pressure on his opponents and this resulted in two decisive turnover balls which shook the Waverley defence. Waverley were now on the back foot and the PC battery made them pay with two solid goals courtesy of Duncan Macdonald and Mike Pearce. Duncan’s goal was special and resembled the silky skills of his namesake, Duncan ‘Silky’ McLeary and his goal was met with a huge roar of support from the crowd gathered on the clubroom balcony. Mike’s goal was a sharp deflection which demonstrated his confidence in his own skills and those of his teammates. These goals were accompanied by a strong defensive effort in the second half with backs Jai Brown, JJ Porrins, Ryan Gration, Joel Lewis, Doc Roberts, Cam Jansen and Ryan Turk limiting Waverley’s attack to a couple of fast breaks and long balls. While the momentum had swung in MCC’s favour, a winner was desperately needed and the clock was ticking down. With less than 3 minutes to go and in front of what was now of a raucous home crowd, in stepped Duncan ‘Silky’ McLeary to calmly slot the winner from a goal line skirmish, following yet another penalty corner. The boys held on for the win and guarantee themselves and MCC another team to play finals. It was an exciting final part of the year for the Men’s PenB team and in the end, a deserved win that reinforced the idea that anything is possible. The win also means that we had beaten every team at least once throughout the year and gives us plenty of momentum and belief going into a wide open finals series.

Please come down to support both the 4s & 5s Men this Saturday at Hawthorn as they fly the flag for the MCC Men’s Section.

WPE vs Knox Rd 18

With nothing more to play for but pride, we went out determined to finish the season on a high and have fun. Rose was back from injury and was hoping to have just a few light “runs” but like Tammy last week, she found she had to fit into the full interchange plan. Kirsty was also back, fit and healthy. Our first half demonstrated our season of great team work, persistence and getting close to the goals. Ivi did her usual good job keeping the opposition out from their few goal shots, Jenny and Kelly were strong in defence with the 3J’s on the half line delivering the ball to our forwards. Jesse was fiery on the right and Janine solid in the centre. Rachael, Marie, Jamie, Kirsty and Fab did all the running up front and tackled back with a vengeance. Our goal came part way through the second half from a short corner and a straight shot by Rose from the top that slotted beautifully between the goalie and post player. Not long after one of Knox’s few short corners was spectacularly saved by Julie. From left post, moving behind Ivi, Julie appeared out of nowhere at right post to cricket shot Knox’s lifted ball off the goal line and then determinedly get it out of the circle. Our final score for the season was a happy 1–0 win. Thanks to coach Caz Ayres, who played her own 650th match the next day, for another happy and enjoyable season. Signing off. Team Equipment

For those teams who have already finished their season, the Committees would very much appreciate it if all practice balls, match balls and first aid kits are returned to the pavilion, ASAP. This will save having to chase them and you up, and also you having to find space at home or in your car over Summer.

Results & Team List Entry Rd 18 & Finals

A reminder to all Team Managers and Captains that results and team lists for Junior and Senior matches during Finals must be in by 11am Monday. For Masters, the deadline is 11am Tuesday. If you miss this deadline it will result in a match forfeit….pretty tough if you have just won your final…..don’t be late!

Parking at MHS

Hopefully you are all enjoying the improvement in weekend parking at MHS for MCC Hockey Members with the introduction of the boom gate and the closing of the yellow gate at the weekends. Please don’t park right up at the corner of the pavilion, this makes access difficult, especially for Emergency Vehicles. Access and parking for away teams will still be maintained from Alexandra Avenue. Member’s access - Codes for entry via the boom gate have been sent to authorised hockey members for their personal use only.
