When it was known as Farewell Bend, it was a village composed of a few makeshift buildings on the banks of the Deschutes River; the last hospitable spot pioneers saw on their epic wagon train journeys west over the Cascade Range. Today, Bend remains not only a hospitable place, it has become the setting of nationally recognized

sporting and recreational events. When it comes to events, take your pick. From triathlons and multisport races, to ski races, running races, mountain bike races, fly-fishing competitions and more, Bend is an athlete's reward. For

the less hardcore athletes, there's a lazy float down the Deschutes River through Bend's Old Mill District with Sun Country Tours. Hikers will love the Deschutes River Trail and taking their pooches for some play time at one of several dog parks. If you get too ensnared by Bend's recreational options, you'll miss a vibrant cultural scene that's alive with art galleries, art walks, a full schedule of outdoor concerts with top musical acts and a lively theater scene. More than twenty breweries are behind Bend's exploding craft beer culture. On any evening out, head to one of the brewpubs and drink in Oregon's burgeoning beervana. Feeling a little more formal? Try one of the dozens of white-linen restaurants or go the other direction with great eats from a food cart. The rest is easy when you're staying at a destination resort, a chic urban hotel or a vacation rental in town.

off about where we live. We almost always

follow that excursion with a trip to a local

brewery like Crux or 10 Barrel for food and

beers. It doesn't get any more Central Oregon

    than that.

Our favorite thing about Central Oregon is the sense of community and happy, well-

balanced lifestyle that the area emanates.

Most of the people who live here do so

because they made a decision about the type

of life they wanted to live, and in some cases,

sacrificed higher pay and a job at a global

brand to fulfill that dream. But the result

is happiness, and you can feel that in the

community, a conscious realization of how

awesome it is to be here and live the life that

    the area enables.

    Tumalo Creek Kayak

is home to five of the state's twelve scenic bikeways, bike-friendly routes highlighted by cultural and historical landmarks, gentle hills and amazing scenery. Fans of competitive cycling will want to come for the Cascade Cycling Classic, the nation's longest-running elite stage race, in July. Several regional road, mountain biking and cyclocross races are held here each year, too.

golf paradise With more than two dozen golf courses less than an hour's drive apart, Central Oregon is a nationally recognized golf destination. Architects such as Jack Nicklaus and David McLay Kidd are among the all-star architects who have created some of their most innovative course designs here.

    Scenic Bikeways

An absolute summer must for road cyclists is riding the best of the bestour scenic bikeways. Every rider can find a route to suit their style and mood, from family friendly to adventurous.

1Twin Bridges This 36-mile ride begins in Bend's downtown Drake Park and follows an engaging, moderately hilly course past the city limits into farm and ranch country, rolling through rimrock canyons with views of snowcapped peaks. Cross the Deschutes River at Twin Bridges Road, and stop in the quaint town of Tumalo. Dip your feet in the cool, clear water, get lunch or sip a latte before powering home. With no extended climbs, it's a great way to fill your lungs with mountain-fresh air and take in the sublime scenery.

2Sisters to Smith Rock This moderate 37-mile route weaves through Sisters country to Smith Rock State Park's impressive rock walls. The Crooked River winds at the base of the volcanic, multicolored forma-tions towering above the valley floor. Watch rock climbers from all over the world tackle thousands of ascent routes. The varied, rolling terrain is generally downhill from Sisters. It is a perfect point-to-point ride if you leave a support vehicle in the public parking areas at each end.

3McKenzie Pass This challenging 37-mile route winds through deep forests, climbing to a volcanic lava-rock moonscape summit. This is likely the most interesting and beautiful scenery you'll ever get on a bike ride. Stop at the Dee Wright Observatory, built from lava rock, and take in spectacular views of the Three Sisters mountains. A huge bonus: Most of this ride is on Route 242 (on the U.S. Register of Historic Places), and it's open only to bicycles in early spring, when just enough snow has melted.

4Metolius River Loops These loops vary from short, family-friendly rides of about three miles, to a moderate, 24-mile ride if you connect several of the shorter loops. The loops begin and end at the 90-year-old Camp Sherman Store and Fly Shop. Travel along the wild and scenic waters of the Metolius River to the Wizard Falls fish hatchery where kids can feed the trout, kokanee and Atlantic salmon. Educational signs

    Summer Biking

Scenic Bikeways describe how the headwaters of the Metolius mark the marvelous begin-ning of the 28-mile river that flows through meadow and forest and

careens through canyon walls before it empties into Lake Billy Chinook. Take in all hues of green in the spring and summer, or stunning reds, yellows and oranges throughout the fall.

5Madras Mountain Views This 30-mile loop through high desert and basalt palisades offers sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains and almost no traffic. Begin and end in small, friendly downtown Madras. Pedal to the stunning overlook above Cove Palisades State Park and Lake Billy Chinook to glimpse eagles and other raptors soaring. Wind through the little towns of Culver and Metolius, stopping for refreshments along lightly trafficked roads. This area's mild winters offer great year-round riding, with sun-drenched days extending throughout winter, spring and fall.

    SUMMER

    Mountain Biking

At the start of Phil's Trail, one of the most popular mountain biking routes in the extensive and renowned network of Bend singletrack heaven, the scene from the parking lot can be misleading. On

any given summer morning, families, retirees, visitors with rental bikes, old-school pioneers of the sport and nationally ranked competitors alike will be rolling in. Once you are out on the trail, winding through the forest, however, you might not see another rider.

That's part of the beauty of Central Oregon mountain biking, with more than 300 miles of trails beneath a canopy of ponderosa pines in the foothills of the Cascade mountains. The lower elevation trails cover all the bases: relatively flat, fast and fun, with some tough technical sections and punchy climbs that cater to beginners and shredders alike.

Head a little farther up, and you'll ride in

    Summer Biking

Mountain BikingExperience hundreds of miles of world-class trails for beginners to shredders, from flat, fast and fun to crazy climbs.

the shadows of snowcapped 10,000-foot peaks through high alpine meadows with breathtaking vistas. Rustic shelters used as warming huts in the winter are perfect for summer biking rest stops where you can take a breather, have a snack from your pack and enjoy the blissful high mountain scenery.

Phil's Trail is by far the most popular riding area in the region. The trailhead is just a couple of minutes from town and from the parking area, riders can access a well-marked maze of diverse singletrack.

If you want the thrills of going downhill but don't want (or have the fitness) to do the pedaling up, check out the new lift-served downhill trails at Mt. Bachelor.

Or, let the folks at Cog Wild Mountain Bike Tours and Shuttles in Bend take you up the Cascade Lakes Highway to trails like Tiddlywinks and Funner.

An epic ride popular among visitors as well

as locals begins with a shuttle that takes you and your bikes to Dutchman Flat, near Mt. Bachelor. After a short, slow climb, you'll reap the reward of cruising downhill for about twenty miles back to town.

Cog Wild will also shuttle you from Bend to the McKenzie River Trail just west of Bend, which has been called America's Number 1 Mountain Bike Trail.

Venture north of Bend to the area around Smith Rock State Park, with its diverse trails and where new ones are being built nearby in Redmond and Prineville every season.

Don't worry about bringing your own bike because Bend shops like Hutch's Bicycles and The Hub Cyclery and Sunriver's 4 Seasons Recreational Outfitters have top-of-the-line rides for you to rent while you're here.

    Farewell Trail

Mt. Bachelor's Downhill Bike Park is the hottest new way to ride the mountain in summer and fall. Grab your mountain bike and hop on the chair lift. Cruise to intermediate and advanced downhill mountain biking

trails. The world's premier downhill bike park planners, Gravity Logic, joined the ski resort's crew in creating the new adrenaline-inducing park, which opened in the summer of 2013. Details at mtbachelor.com
