Radio in Education

Broadcast in Minutes Radio starts here...The Synergy School Radio Team are specialists within the education sector. We have supplied hundreds of education establishments from primary and secondary schools, to further education and universities. We have also pioneered local authority and national education network projects. Many of our team are ex-BBC broadcasters with a huge passion for teaching and learning. All of our trainers are qualified teaching professionals, delivering courses such as A-level and BTEC Media, NCFE and Degree level courses in radio production. We understand what it takes to deliver radio within an education environment and why the equipment you choose is key to making your project a success.

Dedicated Training and Support To help you get started, all of our packages include at least one days training. In addition to the training, Synergy School Radio customers also get FREE access to a dedicated support site. The website includes video tutorials, getting started materials, FAQ’s, manuals and guides, plus a download section for new software releases and updates. All software updates and technical support is free for the life-time of your schools use!

The Essentials Collection The Essentials Collection takes Synergy training and support one step further. Digital vs Analogue Synergy 2 Systems are fully digital. This means that rather than connecting the various sources such as microphones, CD players and telephone balance units to dedicated channels on a mixer, all sources connect to a digital router called a Master Processing Unit (MPU).

The advantage of this is that any source can be routed to any one of the eight or sixteen faders on Synergy’s digital mixing desk. Users can save and load their configuration and additional sources can easily be added to the router without having to re-cable or run untidy wires to the mixing desk on a regular basis.

Support like no other Because Clyde Broadcast manufacture the Synergy 2 Master Processing Unit (MPU), the digital mixing desk and also the Synergy 2 Software suite, our customer support team can access all of the hardware to test, diagnose and perform updates, all via an internet connection. Typical radio studio equipment

Radio broadcast mixing desks are very different to

music production or midi-controller mixers.

Professional broadcast mixers have the ability to

control not just the PC’s software but also popular

external sources such as CD/USB players and

telephone balance units, both industry standard

equipment.

All of our radio station packages include a Professional radio broadcast mixing desk as standard.

Modern radio studios use touch screen monitors.

They are better than the traditional ‘clunky’

keyboard operation as they reduce noise, are not

limited by the number of available buttons. They

also help to keep the presenters operation of the

equipment central to the playlist making it easier.

From the Desktop Premium up, all of our radio

packages include a 22” wide, touch screen monitor

or larger.

Unlike off-the-shelf PC’s, a radio studios PC requires

more than just one sound card to give the presenter

the tools they require to host a live radio show.

All of our packages include 5 channels of audio, so

they are able to broadcast a pre-recorded show, at

the same time as recording an interview or

telephone call for later broadcast.

It is also possible to preview audio, without it being

broadcast, so you can practise your links for

upcoming music tracks without disturbing the

listeners.

Both presenters and guests wi l l require

microphones if they are to be heard clearly on the

radio. Microphones can differ in price and quality

with the presenter usually having a higher quality

microphone. Whilst speaking, both presenter and

guest will always be wearing headphones as the

studio speakers switch-off automatically when the

microphones are in use.

All of our education packages come with at least two microphones and headphones.

The Mic Live indicator is an essential part of a

radio station. It connects to the mixing desk

and automatical ly i l luminates when a

microphone fader is open.

All of our education packages include a Dual Mic Live/On-Air indicator as standard. All Premium packages include two Dual Mic Live/On-Air Indicators so the second one is supplied with a 10M cable and can be mounted outside of the studio room.

Also known as hybrids, these clever devices

enable you to make and receive phone calls

while on-air. Broadcast your caller ‘live’ or

simply record them ‘off-air’ for later broadcast.

TBU’s enable phone-in’s for competitions and

interviews with guests who may not be able to

make it into the school.

How is the radio station broadcast?

Streaming Streaming is a great way to listen

to your radio broadcasts via an

internet or local network

connection.

All S-Radio and Synergy education

systems include streaming

software so that you can listen to

the radio station from day one, live,

via a web-browser or connected

media player within your school.

On the Airwaves If you plan to broadcast on FM or

AM, all of our radio packages for

education are compatible with

transmission equipment that can

be hired or purchased.

We can assist you with the license

application, the equipment you will

require and the training you will

need to make for a successful RSL

(Restricted Service License).

Save to MP3 On Air, the radio play-out software

that comes pre-installed with all

packages, has been specifically

designed to make recording easy.

At the press of a button, the ‘Quick

Record’ feature enables you to

record a LIVE radio show, or just

record the microphones and

telephone PRIVATELY ‘off air’

without disrupting a live show.

PA and Speakers One of the most popular and

reliable ways to broadcast around

the school is to install an amplifier

with speakers in locations where

you would like your radio shows to

be heard.

Speakers are commonly located in

corridors, canteen areas and

outside playground areas.

Do I need a license to broadcast?If you plan to broadcast copyright music on your radio station, you will need the following licenses. Different licenses apply depending on your method of broadcast.

• PRS and PPL - Most schools already have these to listen to and perform copyright music within a publicly licensed area. They are administered through CEFM.

• Student Radio Licence - This you will need to hardware speakers around your school or stream copyright music through your local network to mobile devices. It also includes

MCPS which is the license required to copy music from CD’s or download sites onto the radio studios’ PC. The vast majority of school radio stations will have this license.

• Limited On-line Music Licence (LOML) - If you plan to broadcast copyright music out to the internet, you will need both this license and the Small Webmaster License below.

• Small Webcaster License - This is for small radio stations broadcasting copyright music to the world-wide-web.

• Restricted Service Licence - RSL - This license applies to stations wishing to broadcast over the airwaves on AM or FM for a limited number of days.

Downloaded music from iTunes and Spotify is only licensed for personal use, it should not be used for broadcast. All S-Radio and Synergy Radio packages include 50 UK licensed tracks. For more information on where to buy music that is licenced for broadcast, please see page 15.
