2014 RETURNING LETTERMENHEAD COACH DAN HUNT

Dan Hunt completed his first season as Col-gate’s Fred ’50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Foot-ball Coach.

Hunt led Colgate to a third-place finish in the Pa-triot League after the Raiders were picked for fifth in the preseason poll. Eight Raiders were named to the Coaches All-Patriot League Teams, includ-ing Ed Pavaklo, Mike Armiento and Jonah Bow-man on the first squad. Pavalko completed a run of three straight seasons as All-Patriot League First Team fullback.

Thirteen Raiders under Hunt were named to the three Madness All-Patriot League teams, includ-ing Armiento and John Maddaluna III on the first squad.

Colgate also landed three members on the 14-man Football Academic All-Patriot League team. Bowman, Ben Andersen and Spencer Wallach were all first-time selections to the team, which honors student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. Andersen and Bow-man were selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 1 team, while Wallach served as a team captain in the 2014 season.

Colgate introduced Hunt as its 29th head football coach in December 2013.

Hunt was gracious in his acceptance speech at the announcement news conference, thank-ing his predecessor, Dick Biddle, and his family among others after assuming the title of Fred ‘50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach. Hunt’s wife, Susanne, and sons Ryan and Sean were in attendance on the front row of seating.

Hunt had been by Biddle’s side since Biddle took over as Raiders head coach to begin the 1996 campaign. An immediate sign of the two men’s coaching abilities saw them rally a squad that

went 0-11 the previous season to a 6-5 overall record in 1996, followed by a perfect 6-0 Patriot League season in 1997.

That marked the first of seven conference titles the Biddle & Hunt team constructed.

“It was a true honor and a privilege to be selected to lead Colgate football,” Hunt said. “I appreci-ate the opportunity of continuing Coach Biddle’s established tradition of excellence both on and off the field.”

Hunt also was the offensive mastermind behind Colgate’s recent winning ways. The Springfield College graduate served four seasons as as-sociate head coach and seven as offensive co-ordinator. He had been the quarterbacks coach since 1999.

In 2012 with Hunt calling the shots, the Raiders finished third nationally in scoring offense, fourth in total offense and fifth in rushing offense. And Hunt’s starting quarterback turned in one of the more impressive individual seasons in Colgate history.

Gavin McCarney tore through the Raiders record book en route to compiling 3,778 yards of total offense – 1,406 of that coming on the ground. McCarney was the nation’s leading scorer with 140 points, scoring 23 touchdowns and added one two-point conversion. He was named to All-America units by The Sports Network (Second Team) and The Associated Press (Third Team), in addition to earning the Patriot League’s Offen-sive Player of the Year.

Hunt’s Keys to SuccessMcCarney’s name now ap-pears in the Colgate indi-vidual records section in 19 different categories.

Colgate in 2012 under Hunt was one of the nation’s most prolific offensive units. The Raiders led the Patriot League and ranked in the top 10 nationally in nearly every major offensive cat-egory. Colgate finished the season third nationally in scoring (39.4), fourth in total offense (486.4), fifth in rush-ing (284.5) and sixth in pass efficiency (154.22 rating). In addition, tailback Jordan Mc-Cord rushed for 1,708 yards for the fifth-best total in Pa-triot League history.

Hunt began his Colgate ten-ure working with the tight ends in 1995 and 1996, be-fore one season as the run-ning backs coach.

“I always viewed myself as the most fortunate assistant

in college football,” Hunt said. “For 18 years, I was able to work at a school I respect and ad-mire while living in a town I love. To be chosen as head coach was an absolute dream come true.”

Hunt saw 11 of his players earn All-Patriot League honors, highlighted by the selection of quarterbacks McCarney and Ryan Vena as the league’s top offensive players. Also under his tu-telage, running back Daymon Smith was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in 1997 and running back Ed Weiss was selected Patriot League Rookie of the Year.

Superb Choice“Dan Hunt is a superb choice as my replace-ment,” Biddle said at the time of Hunt’s an-nouncement. “He has an excellent reputation on campus, the players admire him and he knows what it takes to be successful at Colgate. You have to be yourself and put your trademark on a team, and I’m sure he will do that.”

Hunt came to Colgate from his alma mater, where he helped coach the wide receivers and tight ends. Hunt began his coaching career at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany before returning to Springfield in 1993 as head junior varsity coach.

Hunt was a three-year starter at tight end for Springfield. Born in Canajoharie, N.Y., Hunt graduated from Springfield in 1992 with a degree in physical education, and earned his master’s degree in athletic administration from Springfield in 1995.

Dan, Susanne, Ryan and Sean make their home in Hamilton.

Hunt coached the Raiders to a third-place Patriot League finish.

Raiders Add 24In 2015 Recruiting ClassColgate wrapped its 2015 National Signing Day with the addition of 24 football student-athletes. Raiders head coach Dan Hunt was pleased that his staff was able to pinpoint and sign skill-posi-tion student-athletes. “The last two seasons, we put a lot of scholar-ships and energy into the offensive and defen-sive lines, and they’ve panned out,” Hunt said. “We’ve got some good linemen on both sides of the ball. “We felt this year we could go a bit lighter there and concentrate more on the skill positions.” Hunt said the staff also searched for multi-facet-ed individuals. “Another thing you will see with this class is there are a lot of kids on it who in high school played multiple positions. We think when they get here they also should be able to play multiple posi-tions.” The signees are from seven states. There are six from Pennsylvania, five from Florida and four each from Illinois and Massachusetts. One of those Bay Staters, Chris Cervizzi, played the last two seasons at the Brooks School in the Boston suburb of North Andover for former Raiders as-sistant coach Pat Foley.

Three signees are from New Jersey and there is one each is from Texas and Ohio. “It’s definitely the end of a long process,” Hunt said. “Our relationship with most of these kids started probably around this time last year. And then through spring evaluations and camp sea-

son and getting to see them during the season – it’s a long arduous process. “The assistant coaches have done a great job; they really make it easy on me. They scoured the country for this class and we’re really happy with it. But it’s definitely the end of a long road for sure.”
