Overview and Goal for the Educational MeetingThe mission of the AACMFS is to improve the health and quality of life of patients with congenital and acquired CMF disorders by the advancement of knowledge of the science and art of CMF surgery. The format for this meeting will provide an educational platform for the exchange of ideas in the areas of pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery, trauma and head and neck oncology and reconstruction. Keynote speakers will introduce each topic which will follow with abstracts presented by Fellows that demonstrate their commitment to research, education, clinical innovation and professional service in the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery. Emphasis will be placed on education and training challenges. The goal of this activity is to bring together experts in their respective fields to share information regarding patients with craniomaxillofacial disorders and discuss options for improving patient care.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this scientific session the attendee should be able to:

1. Discuss the challenges in maxillofacial reconstruction and approaches to overcome.2. Examine novel insights into cancer biology and strategies for using the immune system

to combat disease.3. Discuss the recognition of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a surgical specialty by

existing medical institutions, such as the American College of Surgeons.4. Describe the management of hypovolemia and shock and technologies developed for

the care of the acutely injured patient, but with applications to all major forms of surgery where blood loss is a component.

5. Critique research studies as they relate to craniomaxillofacial patient populations and the implications for changes in practice.

6. Formulate a plan of action related to the challenges facing the profession of medicine, dentistry and OMS Craniomaxillofacial surgery training programs.

Target AudienceThis scientific session is for oral and maxillofacial surgeon and dentists who are Fellows of the AACMFS and have come together to advance their field of practice and are interested in sharing experiences and setting future direction.

Professional Practice GapsClinical and educational evidence-based research is the basis for this scientific program. Fellows of the AACMFS present their research and exchange information that will enhance their practice as well as set forth guidelines for future research, education and training in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Assessment of NeedA survey conducted by the American College of Maxillofacial Surgeons revealed that training programs are changing and there is a steady and continual erosion of the basic science curricula. There is a concern regarding adequately preparing surgical residents for the complexities of patient care, as well as for medical and/or specialty board examinations, if the core sciences are minimized to the point of omission? At issue is creating a continuum of training that focuses on allowing residents to train to their level of interest and competence, while utilizing optimal resources based upon regional politics and access to clinical material. Consideration should be given to having fellowships and residencies accredited by the ACGME in order to alleviate concerns over the integration of dentistry into health education.

Methodology-FormatThe format for this course includes keynote speakers to address the concerns of the specialty followed by abstracts presented by Fellow members. It is highly interactive and is designed to outline a plan for the future of the specialty.

Deadline for submission is April 15, 2015.The abstract presentation will be 5 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion. Co-authors who are not AACMFS Fellow may present the abstract.
