C.A.F.E. Practices

The Conservation Principles for Coffee Production, a set of multistakeholder criteria launched in 2001, became the original platform that Starbucks used to

evolve and eventually develop a more holistic set of coffee-buying guidelines that is now known as Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices. These guidelines were designed to ensure the sustainable supply of high quality coffee; achieve economic accountability; promote social responsibility within the coffee supply chain; and protect the environment.

Child labor is a topic widely reported in the media.Starbucks is committed to upholding international child labor standardsin our own operations and throughout

our supply chain by making them a stipulation of our supplier relationships. Like other companies, Starbucks has adopted policies that require all of our suppliers – from large-scale to small enterprises – to comply with international or locally mandated labor standards, whichever is higher.

Grounds for your Garden

In 1999, Starbucks started "Grounds for your Garden" to make their business environmentally friendlier. This gives leftover coffee grounds to anyone requesting it for composting. Although not all stores and regions participate, customers can request and lobby their local store to begin the practice.

In 2004, Starbucks began reducing the size of their paper napkins and store garbage bags, and lightening their solid waste production by 816.5 t (1,800,000 lb).

In June 2009, in response to concerns over its excessive water consumption, Starbucks re-evaluated its use of the dipper well system.

In September 2009, company-operated Starbucks stores in Canada & the United States successfully implemented a new water saving solution that meets government health standards. This will reportedly save up to 150 US gal (570 l) of water per day in every store.

Eliminating most double-cupping by utilizing corrugated hot beverage sleeves made of 60 percent post-consumer recycled fiber.

Starbucks gives customers a 10-cent discount when they bring their own reusable cup, and it now uses corrugated cup sleeves made from 60 percent post-consumer recycled fiber.

Introducing hot beverage paper cups made with 10 percent post-consumer recycled content. these cups, which are the first direct contact food packaging containing post-consumer recycled content to receive a favorable safety review

In fiscal 2006, Starbucks introduced several beverage and food items as part of our commitment to health and wellness. Here are some examples:Yogurt parfaits and fresh fruit salads were added to the menu in various stores.Prepackaged nut and dried fruit blends began being offered.Juice Blends, which contain real fruit juice and are naturally fat-free, cholesterol-free, and completely non-dairy,were introduced. Complied with the new labeling requirements for trans fats.• Reformulated our Frappuccino blended crème base, bringing all of Starbucks beverages to less than 0.5 grams of artificial trans fat.• Reduced trans fats to 0 grams including our pumpkin cream cheese muffns and gingerbread loafs.
