DEAR FUTURE WILDCAT, Right now, you are joining millions of college-bound students across

the world who are contemplating the next chapter of their lives.

You are not alone in the college selection process, and deciding which

institution and experience is right for you will require you to balance

multiple considerations.

What makes this place — the University of Kentucky — different?

As Kentucky’s flagship and land-grant research university, we offer a

distinctive, welcoming and vibrant college community. We encourage

members of our Wildcat family to combine enriching academic programs

with hands-on, personal experiences across a diverse range of activities

and organizations.

As one of only eight universities with the breadth and depth of quality

programs located on a contiguous campus, you can take advantage of a

full spectrum of degree programs, research opportunities and study abroad.

College is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and others,

and the relationships you build are integral to a well-rounded higher

education, one that prepares you for success in whatever you choose.

To help you navigate these options, faculty and staff across campus are

eager mentors willing to support your interests inside and outside the

classroom. We are building a campus community where you can learn,

mature and succeed alongside your fellow students, faculty and staff.

Our goal is to prepare you for more than a job; it’s to prepare you for life.

Your opportunities at the University of Kentucky are limited only by

your imagination. The View Book illustrates our campus and provides

important enrollment information. But, as you take a look at the

View Book and consider the facts and figures, also take a moment

to see yourself as a part of the UK family.

“see blue.”,

“I guess you can say I’ve always been a Wildcat. My family likes to joke that blue is in my blood since I was born in a hospital basically 100 yards from UK’s football stadium. My dad and his grandfather also went to UK, so my family goes back four generations of Wildcats. Even when we moved to South Carolina when I was a kid, we always found time to visit UK every year for football and basketball games. After spending two years at a smaller, private school on a basketball scholarship, I decided to make the transfer to the place that’s been calling me home all along.

Transferring to a new school is scary because there’s a lot of uncertainty, but my experience with UK’s transfer process was actually very easy. There were people at every twist and turn, guiding me through everything from credit transfers to dorm assignments. Their enthusiasm to make the process go as smoothly as possible only made me that much more excited to start my life as a Wildcat. There’s a unique sense of community, support and belonging here that I don’t think you necessarily find elsewhere.”

“My classes at UK have put me in contact with professors who have become my mentors throughout my undergraduate years. I think it’s rare to have actual relationships with your professors – especially at a big university – and having that kind of support system as I’ve adjusted to my new life on campus has been a true comfort. UK really promotes collaboration between its students and its faculty, and I don’t think that happens everywhere.

I’ve always taken pride in being independent, but being a student here has pushed me to a level of independence I never thought I could reach. The environment at UK encourages students to get involved and make the most of their time here. The more I involve myself in campus activities and projects, the more I have settled into my life in Lexington. Now when I say ‘I’m going home’ – I don’t mean my childhood home – I mean my UK home.”

“UK really stood out for me during the admission process because each representative I spoke with seemed genuinely excited for the next undergraduate class to contribute to the growth of the university, rather than being focused on simply adding students to an established campus. I loved the idea of being part of a growing institution, of something bigger than myself, and UK genuinely seemed to want the same.

An undergraduate education is more than a continuation of schooling – it is one of the first opportunities in our society for an individual to actively seek avenues of personal growth in areas specific to his interests. And I am proud to be part of a university that truly invests in its undergraduate population.”

Transformation. It’s happening everywhere

at the University of Kentucky.

Our core curriculum challenges students to collaborate

and expand their skills across several disciplines; our

faculty and staff are committed to transforming lives

and communities through innovative teaching,

research and cutting-edge health care.

Nowhere, though, is that transformation more

apparent than in the way students live on campus. UK

is currently undertaking the largest and most innovative

transformation of student residence halls in the country.

The facilities are designed and built to foster community

among both students and faculty. Living Learning

Programs allow for social and intellectual development

as students and faculty interact in immersive,

discipline-oriented environments.

Our focus on housing is intentional. Students perform

better academically when they live on campus, where they

can engage more readily with faculty and in university life.

As a freshman, you can choose from more than 20

housing options, each offering unique benefits, dining

and entertainment experiences. They all make up one

great community.

NORTH CAMPUS ACADEMIC SUPPORT ZONE

The north campus academic support zone is home to six residence halls –

Champions Court I, Champions Court II, Limestone Park I, Limestone Park II,

Roselle Hall and Wildcat Coal Lodge. These facilities include multiple Living

Learning Programs and access to The Study North and Common Grounds,

located in the lower level of Champions Court I. Students living on North

Campus have the best of both worlds – they are in close proximity to state-of-the-

art academic support and they are within a short walking distance to Memorial

Coliseum, White Hall Classroom Building, Singletary Center for the Arts, the

UK Bookstore, retail shops and lots of great places to eat like Blazer Cafe

and Bowman’s Den as well as many downtown attractions like Rupp Arena!

CENTRAL CAMPUS ACADEMIC SUPPORT ZONE

The central campus academic support zone is the place to be for students who want

to be near the W.T. Young Library. Students living in Central II, Haggin and

Lyman T. Johnson halls can walk right out of their residence halls and cross the street

to access the library of the Commonwealth. Honors Program students abound in this

area. The Honors Program leadership team is housed in the lower level of Central II,

along with classrooms, that make it easy to get to class on time. Students are close

to the science and medical complexes and dining facilities – including K-Lair,

Starbucks and Einstein Bros Bagels. The beautiful terraced courtyards make it the

perfect place to relax, have lunch, hang out with friends or open a laptop and study.

SOUTH CAMPUS ACADEMIC SUPPORT ZONE

The south academic support zone is home to several residence halls offering

both suites and traditional-style rooms. This zone includes Baldwin, Ingels

and Smith halls; the Kirwan Blanding Complex; and Woodland Glen I-V.

Multiple Living Learning Programs are located here as well as easy access

to The Study, where academic success is the goal. Students who want to take a

break from studying have the Johnson Recreation Center, Commonwealth Stadium,

Lancaster Aquatic Center, tennis courts and UK’s baseball and soccer fields all

within very close proximity, as well as the UK Arboretum. Delicious dining

options in “The 90” are also in this neighborhood.

Food is about community – our own heritage and

sense of place. It’s about how we remember the past

and how we immerse ourselves in the present.

The University of Kentucky is in the midst of a major

revival of its food services and dining facilities. We are

opening new venues and providing new culinary options

across campus. Spaces like K-Lair and “The 90” are

student-focused, inviting fellow Wildcats to gather,

foster friendship and break bread together.

It’s a part of our campus-wide renewal to build a 21st

century residential campus – one focused on how we

connect, learn and discover with others. It’s about how

we connect with community.

Our collaborative effort prioritizes a broad array of

healthy, high-quality food options; popular national

brands, low-cost meal plans, easy access to nutritional

information, a commitment to local farmers and an

innovative academic partnership between dining,

UK’s academic programs and the local food economy.

At UK, our priorities are about more than buildings;

they’re about creating community on campus where

students will feel welcomed and supported as part of

the UK family.

It’s about people. It’s about you.

ELIZABETH

“At first I thought that it would be hard to meet people at such a large university,

especially since we came from a very small high school, but it’s actually been the

opposite. I always see people I know on campus on my way to class in the morning —

in fact I actually give myself extra time to walk to class so I can stop and chat with

friends I run into. UK is a big university, but it’s also a close community of students

that love the Big Blue Nation. Here is where friendships are made.”

EVELYNE

“Two words: BLEED BLUE. This campus and city is full of UK pride. This type

of energy and enthusiasm is unique to UK and really made me want to be a Wildcat.

Not to mention there are so many things to do in Lexington – live shows, farmers

markets, the Arboretum, Thursday Night Live, Keeneland and new restaurants

are always being added. I just love how campus is so action-packed and how alive

the surrounding town is.”

You will find plenty of opportunities to grow and

enhance your overall college experience outside of the

classroom. Through clubs and student organizations,

you’ll have avenues for making lifelong friends and

creating lasting memories, all while gaining valuable

experience that will help make you a more marketable

job candidate after graduation.

With more than 550 student organizations and clubs

ranging from academic, social, religious and cultural,

to arts, media, politics and activism, as well as Greek

life and other special interests – there is an organization

for just about anything. And if you can’t find the one

you’re looking for, just grab a few friends and create it.

You will have all the resources you need.

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is the

connection point for all students to the opportunities

available at UK. The CSI is a place to discover your

passion for service, leadership and involvement,

serving as a resource center for the hundreds of

student organizations on campus.

The Center for Community Outreach is your springboard

to serving the community, the Commonwealth and the

world. Jump right into service during your first week on

campus through UK FUSION (For Unity and Service

In Our Neighborhoods), Kentucky’s single largest day of

service. Travel abroad with the Alternative Service Breaks

Program or help train service dogs through one of several

programs on campus. Join thousands of other Wildcats

at DanceBlue in the spring, a year-long fundraising effort

that culminates in a 24-hour non-stop dance marathon

to benefit children with pediatric cancer.

If you are unsure of what type of service program you’d

like to become involved in, the Center for Community

Outreach can connect you through the VolunteerMatch

website and provide guidance on the opportunities available

to you. Student Involvement also offers OrgSync, a website

that helps students track their involvement and provides

direct access to all student organizations.

Fourteen Kentucky Senators and Representatives are

UK alumni, and many of them started their public

service in the UK Student Government Association

(SGA), a large and thriving organization dedicated

to serving the needs of UK’s student body. The SGA

president is the student representative to UK’s Board

of Trustees, ensuring the students’ voice is heard. Get

involved in student government early as part of the

Leadership Development Program, which introduces

new students to student government and prepares

them to become campus leaders.

MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN.

UK’s Student Activities Board (SAB) is in charge of

ensuring that there’s always something exciting happening

on campus. SAB brings more than 100 events – concerts,

lectures, comedians and special events – to campus each

year. These programs engage students in campus life and

UK traditions. And if you’re involved in one of SAB’s

several committees, you will have an opportunity to bring

these types of programs to campus.

If you have a thirst for competition, join any of UK’s

intramural and club athletics teams. Foster school pride

by helping plan Homecoming through the Homecoming

Coalition. Or keep the crowd going at sporting events as

part of Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) and

TEAM WILDCAT. The opportunities are endless.

Just ask any UK student. Getting involved in a student

organization is much more than fun and games, it’s an

opportunity to become a happier and more successful

Wildcat. Research shows that students who are involved

with a student organization are more connected to their

university and perform better in the classroom.

63

Page 66: 2015-16 University of Kentucky Viewbook

The nickname “Wildcats” became synonymous with

UK shortly after a 6–2 football road victory over Illinois

on October 9, 1909. Commandant Philip W. Corbusier,

then head of the military department at old State

University, told a group of students in a chapel service

following the game that the Kentucky football team

had “fought like Wildcats.”

“Kentucky felt like home to me as soon as I stepped on campus. I belong here.

The statement ‘see blue.’ really resonates with me because it’s true that blue is

more than just a color at UK. It represents the Big Blue Nation – a family –

that constantly pushes you toward achieving your dreams.

As a public health major, one of the things I love most about UK is that it provides

many opportunities to get involved with your field, even a broad field like mine.

I attended a public health career fair on campus and was able to talk to people

who told me about undergraduate research opportunities and internships with

state health departments. It’s very comforting to meet people who are on the same

path as you and that seem to genuinely care about your future. I’m grateful to have

opportunities to build skills as an undergrad that I will need as a professional.”

Lexington is considered one of the best college towns in

America. In fact, the American Institute for Economic

Research ranked Lexington the ninth best small metro

college town in a recent survey. Livability.com agreed,

ranking Lexington a Top 5 College Town.

But what makes Lexington so great? Nestled in the

heart of the Bluegrass, Lexington is a bustling, thriving

city with Midwestern sensibilities and small-town

Southern charm.

THIS IS KENTUCKY’S

Lexington is within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the U.S.

population. Here, you will find a unique blend of rural

aesthetics with cosmopolitan amenities. The heart of

downtown is just a 10-minute walk from campus residence

halls, while a 10-minute drive from campus leads you to

acres of rolling hills, bluegrass and picturesque horse farms.

Lexington is clean, safe and home to dozens of local

eateries, shops and stores that make up our city’s unique

vibe. Within a short walk or a quick ride on the COLT

Trolley from campus, you will find dozens of top-notch

restaurants, coffee shops, pizza places, live music venues,

dance clubs, unique book stores, vintage CD and vinyl

stores and clothing boutiques, and plenty of little shops

selling all kinds of things you didn’t know you needed.

7171

Page 74: 2015-16 University of Kentucky Viewbook

Home to dozens of local bakeries, it’s no wonder that

Lexington makes up a large part of the New York Times’

Kentucky Donut Trail. And if burgers are more your

speed, Tolly Ho, a UK favorite late-night diner, is home

to the best burger in Kentucky and one of the Top 50

Burgers in America according to USA Today.

With all of these accolades, it’s pretty easy to see why

Lexington is a five-time winner of 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s

Promise Alliance. Lexington ranks highly on Forbes’

Best Places for Business and Careers and is ranked

the Seventh Best Midsize City for Finding a Job. Many of our students stay in Lexington after

graduation because the city is a great place to live,

work and raise a family.

Lexington is also a high-tech hot spot, ranking 17th on

The Atlantic’s list. Named a 2013 eCity by Google,

many innovative technology-based companies and startups

are located here in the heart of the Bluegrass, several

in UK’s Coldstream Research Campus. Fast Company

even identified Kentucky in the Top 20 of the “United States of Innovation.”

To in Lexington you simply need to open

your eyes. Pride in our institution and city is everywhere.

There’s a spirit that you’ll feel as soon as you step foot

“I remember walking through the president’s garden at UK on my first day of class

as a freshman and seeing a group of upperclassmen strolling to class, laughing and

carefree. For some reason, it calmed my nerves to see fellow classmates just enjoying

another day at school. It made me remember why I came to UK – to better myself

academically and socially, to build toward my future and to not stress out because

I am surrounded by a group of peers striving to be better as well.

My favorite thing about UK is that I know an entire legacy came before me. I know

that it’s possible to achieve great things during and after college, and that I have

networks and alumni at my fingertips to help me get to where I want to be in life.

That motivates me to want to help other students down the line.”
