TEMPLE WOMEN’S ROWING HISTORYDuring the summer of 1987, the Temple University Athletics Department hired Debbie Rilling Bronder to be the first headcoach of the newly instituted Temple Women’s Crew. There was a small club team that had existed for a few years, butnow Women’s Crew was a full varsity sport supported by the University.

Joe Sullivan, a former Temple Rower, was hired as the assistant coach to take on the novice rowers. In that first season, the program fielded a Varsity 8, a Junior Varsity 8, and a Freshman/Novice 8. TheVarsity 8 made the final at the Dad Vail Regatta, placing fifth, with four of thoserowers being novices.

The next season, 1988-89, was a good one as well with several victories in vari-ous regattas, but unfortunately no finalists at the Dad Vail Regatta. Most of therowers in the previous year’s Varsity 8 and JV 8s had to be replaced. The enthu-siasm and dedication of the women was a sign of a good future for the team.

In the fall of 1989, Tony Neczypor was hired as head coach when Ms. Bronderleft to spend more time with her new family. Coach Sullivan remained as the as-sistant. In the spring the Varsity 8 again finished 5th in the Dad Vail Regatta andthe JV 8 placed third. There were many ups and downs in the spring of 1990with the young team, but their dedication and commitment paid off in the end.

Coach Necypor left in the fall of 1990, and Scott Roop, former lightweight WorldChampion, came on board for the spring of 1991. Former Owl Kelly MacIntoshwas the assistant coach for the 1990-91 season. That spring saw the team winmany races and grow stronger and more confident in its abilities.

In the fall of 1991, Gerry Flood, former Temple rower and assistant coach to themen’s team, took over for Coach Roop who left to coach Brown University’sfreshman team. Vince Fitzpatrick, another former Temple rower, was hired asthe assistant coach. Those young women from the spring of 1989, now in theirfourth fourth season together, had the best season to date for the Owls. Withthe team growing stronger under the guidance of Coach Flood, the future heldgreat promise for Temple Women’s Crew.

The Varsity 8 captured its first gold medal at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in1994. The Owls followed up their Dad Vail gold with a silver in 1995.

Following Coach Flood’s tenure, Jamie Gordon was the head coach from the fall of 1995 until the spring of 2001. In 1996,the Varsity 8 once again finished first at the Dad Vail Regatta, earning its second gold medal.

Christine Deatrick became the head coach in the fall of 2001 and served in that position until spring 2004. In the spring2004, the Varsity 8 made it to the grand finals at the Dad Vail Regatta.

Tim Hagan, who served as an assistant under Gordon and Deattrick, took the reigns of the program in the fall of 2004and led the Owls to the Kelly Cup (City Championship) in 2006 as well as a silver medal in the Varsity 8 at the Atlantic 10Championship.

Before the 2011-12 season, former Temple rower and 2004 U.S. gold medalist Jason Read (’01) was hired to take over ashead coach of the program. Under Read, Rebecca Smith Grzybowski was hired as an assistant coach, before taking overthe reigns as head coach for the 2012-13 season.

Dr. Neil Theobald was named Temple Univer-sity’s 10th president in August 2012. In partner-ship with an excellent faculty and talented staff,he leads a university that educates more than38,000 students and operates one of the nation’sleading academic medical centers. Temple has achieved several milestones inDr. Theobald’s early tenure. The university has setboth private fundraising and research fundingrecords in each of his first three years. It has alsoenrolled record numbers of students—with the lasttwo freshmen classes being the most academicallyqualified and diverse entering classes in Templehistory. Temple has been nationally recognized byKiplinger’s as one of the best values among publicuniversities. These achievements have been fea-tured on NPR’s Morning Edition, The Chronicle ofHigher Education, and other major media outlets.Philadelphia Business Journal named Dr. Theobaldits Most Admired Education CEO in 2015. Dr. Theobald has laid out six commitmentsthat guide University resource allocation:(1) Address head-on the issue of time-to-degree,which is the primary determinant of student debtat public universities. In his innovative FlyIn4 ini-tiative, students are guaranteed the ability to grad-uate in four years, keeping their debt to aminimum.(2) Maintain affordability and commit Temple to beat the forefront of quality undergraduate instruc-tion.(3) Share Temple’s greatest strengths—the expert-ise, creativity, and energy of its faculty, re-searchers, and students—to addressPhiladelphia’s two perennial problems: indigent

health care and P-12 education.(4) Drive the regional economy through Temple’sresearch enterprise.(5) Maintain and increase the diversity that theuniversity is known for. One avenue to do so is theTemple Option under which 1,000 freshmen areadmitted each year without standardized testscores.(6) Educate innovators across the university so thatTemple’s future alumni remain flexible and produc-tive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing world. He also has decentralized the universitybudget to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Inaddition, Dr. Theobald launched Visualize Temple,a master planning process that seeks to transformthe university’s central campus. Dr. Theobald started out like many TempleOwls. Born to working-class parents in Peoria, Ill.,he planned to enter an electrician’s apprenticeshipafter high school. However, he won an academicscholarship to Trinity (CT) College and became thefirst person in his family to attend college, earninga B.A. in economics in 1978. After teaching math-ematics and coaching high school baseball, heearned a Ph.D. in education finance from Washing-ton in 1988, winning the Jean Flanigan Award fromthe American Education Finance Association forthe outstanding doctoral dissertation. Dr. Theobald joined the faculty of the Wash-ington’s College of Education after receiving hisPh.D. He helped create the Danforth administratortraining program at the UW that is now in its 27thyear of operation. His research focused on decen-tralizing educational funding and modeling educa-tional labor markets. He received the UniversityCouncil for Educational Administration’s Jack Cul-bertson Award for the most significant contributionsby a junior professor and earned tenure in 1993. Dr. Theobald moved to Indiana University in

1993 to direct the Indiana Education Policy Center,co-funded by the Lilly Endowment and the IndianaGeneral Assembly. His work focused on Indiana’sK-12 school funding formula. During his researchcareer, Dr. Theobald published nearly 100 articles, books, and reports on education funding and re-lated fields, which led to more than $7 million ingrants and contracts. He was also a 3-time winnerof IU’s Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. From 2002-07, Dr. Theobald was Senior ViceProvost for Indiana’s flagship campus in Blooming-ton, where he was responsible for the campus’budget and directed a $1.1 billion capital cam-paign. Major accomplishments include adding 120tenure-track faculty members, increasing the fi-nancial aid endowment from less than $150 millionto more than $550 million, and increasing themean SAT score of IU Bloomington’s incomingclass from 1099 to 1203. From 2007 to 2012, Dr. Theobald was SVP andCFO for IU, where he oversaw a $3.1 billion budget, supervision of HR services for IU’s 3,100 facultyand more than 14,000 staff members, and manage-ment of the largest student union in the world andone of the five largest student housing systems inthe country. During his time as CFO, IU’s creditranking was upgraded to Moody’s highest level(Aaa)—making IU one of only eight Aaa-rated pub-lic universities in America. Dr. Theobald enjoys sports—playing intramu-ral softball at Temple each spring—and bicyclesto/from work whenever possible. Every fall, he andhis wife, Sheona Mackenzie, teach a freshmenseminar on organizational change. They have threechildren: Roddy, a Ph.D. statistician; Kinnear, aphysician; and Mattie, a graduate student. Theyalso have two grandchildren, Jimmy and Lochlynn.
