Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK Saturday, June 6

All sick and elderly parishioners are invited to the Mass with the Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick which will be cele-brated in our church on SATURDAY, June 6, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Before the Mass at 9:30 AM the priests will be available for the Sacrament of Penance. Family members, friends and neighbors are kindly asked to assist anyone who might bene-fit from the Sacrament with transporta on to our church. Anoin ng of the Sick The anoin ng of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness. It is a rite that is performed to convey God’s grace to the recipient, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Does God Always Heal? Today some Chris ans go to extremes in their expecta on of divine healing. God does not always heal the physical infirmi-

es that afflict us. Of course, our healing, like all things, is subject to God’s will. As James pointed out just a chapter earlier, "You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a li le me and then van-ishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and we shall do this or that’" (Jas. 4:14) We have a promise of healing, but not an unqualified one. It is condi onal on the will of God. The Value of Suffering Even though we must face a certain amount of suffering and afflic on in this life, we know God’s grace is sufficient to sus-tain us. All of God’s graces, including physical health, are be-stowed to lead to the salva on of our souls. God also uses our suffering to help others. If Paul had not become ill while on his first missionary journey and been forced to stop travel-ing, he would not have preached to the Gala ans, for he tells them, "You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first" (Gal. 4:13). If he had not preached to the Gala ans, he would not have later wri en them the epistle that appears in our New Testament. God used Paul’s illness to bring salva on to the Gala ans and to bring us a work of Scripture, through which we are s ll re-ceiving benefits from God. This is just one example of how God used suffering to bring about good. Therefore, if we suffer, we should look upon it as an opportunity for good, such as by offering up our sufferings for our own sanc fica-

on and for our departed brothers and sisters in Christ.

One of my favorite possessions is a gi my daughter gave me several years ago now, and because it has graced the wri ng desk in my office/den from the get-go, I’ve seen it nearly every day since. It is an 8” by 8” brown frame which holds a piece of cream-colored parchment paper on which Sarah hand-le ered in green gouache a La n quote from the Roman lyric poet Horace. It reads: Aut insanit homo, aut versus facit, which roughly translates into “The fellow is either mad, or he is composing verse.” Any home-made gi is special to me. Because of its writerly context, this one is even more so. And, it comes to mind on this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity as I ponder the mystery we’re all pondering today. It comes to mind specifically because of something I stumbled upon last week doing a li le online research about the Holy Spirit. It was an ar cle wri en by a guy named Bill Bright, who in turn quoted a Dr. Wilbur Smith, one of Bright’s seminary instructors. And per Dr. Smith (per Bill Bright): “The man who denies the Trinity will lose his soul. The man who tries to understand the Trinity will lose his mind.” Aut insanit homo, aut he is studying the Triune God. Or something like that… In The Princess Bride, when Inigo is confused about what to do next, he returns to the place where his boss gave him the current assignment (“I am wai ng for you, Vizzini. You told me to go back to the beginning”). O en it’s good to return to the begin-ning--for perspec ve, if nothing else--and maybe the “beginning”

for a be er understanding of the Trinity is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Catechism offers an overview: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Chris an faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them…The whole history of salva on is iden cal with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men, and (from the General Cateche cal Directory) ‘reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.’” Then, the dogma: “The Trinity is one. We do not con-fess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the ‘consubstan al Trinity’ (from the Council of Constan nople). The divine persons do not share the one divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and en re.” And (from the Council of Toledo XI): “‘The Father is that which the Son is, the Son that which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e., by nature one God’” Also, “‘He is not the Father who is the Son, nor is the Son he who is the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit he who is the Father or the Son…’’ In his essay, Bright recognizes the inadequacy of human-designed models to illustrate the Trinity (“For example, I could say that a man has a body, a mind and a spirit—which one is the man?”). Which is no be er or worse that the three-leaf clover model I learned in grade school. In the end, I believe, but I don’t lose any sleep trying to really understand. Aut insanit homo, aut…
