Being a Prayer Warrior

Back in July I was at the church on a Tuesday afternoon setting up for the Craft-a-Palooza fundraiser and happened to notice a parishoner heading into the sanctuary. I approached her to ask if all was well. Turns out, it was 1:30 pm on a Tuesday, and she was there as a “Prayer Warrior”. Did you know that our Prayer Warrior prays for everyone in our parish by name, and everyone on the Prayer list in the bulletin, and our Vestry and all of our ministries, every Tuesday? I was humbled to join her on a few Tuesdays after that and wondered how many in our congregation remembered this ministry. In reading the second lesson on Sunday, August 26, I was again reminded that one of our greatest weapons against the “flaming arrows of the enemy” is prayer. From Ephesians 6: 10-20, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” ... “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”... We are a small congregation, with a big heart of faith. I am quite sure the devil does not want us to succeed in being a “beacon of light” in a divisively weary world (including right here in Pasadena). The fact that our doors are still open to welcome those who may be seeking the “gospel of peace” can certainly be attributed to the work of this lone Prayer Warrior, in addition to the ongoing efforts of our Vestry, Fr. Ron, and all those committed to the Mission of St. Andrew's of “Sharing God's Love”. So, I encourage you to assist in this prayer ministry. Join St. Andrew’s Prayer Warriors on a Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 pm. If you can't make it to the church to pray, then pray where you are. Use the most recent church directory, the prayer insert from the bulletin and/or the Prayers for All Occasions listed on pages 810-12 in the back of your Book of Common Prayer. We are community of faith, and our faith is rooted in God's Love. Let us demonstrate that love by praying, “in spirit and in truth”. (John 4: 24) If you think you don't have the words or aren't proficient in prayer, don't worry, “the Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you...” (John 16: 12) All we need to do is “just show up”. Let's all be Prayer Warriors!

In Christ's Love, Terry McLean

IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH WRITES: I am God's wheat, ground fine by the lion's teeth to be made purest bread for Christ. No early pleasures, no kingdoms of this world can benefit me in any way. I prefer death in Christ Jesus to power over the farthest limits of the earth. He who died in place of us is the one object of my quest. He who rose for our sakes is my one desire. The time for my birth is close at hand. Forgive me, my brothers. Do not stand in the way of my birth to real life; do not wish me stillborn. My desire is to belong to God. Do not, then, hand me back to the world. do not try to tempt me with material things. Let me attain pure light. Only on my arrival there can I be fully a human being. Give me the privilege of imitating the passion of my God.

Winter Relief Update

The Arundel House of Hope (AHOH) staff are very grateful we are proceeding as planned with hosting Winter Relief (WR) the week of November 26 to December 3rd for 25 men. Apparently they are having some difficulty lining up churches that week and thus far, we are the only one committed. After two well attended planning meetings and a fundraiser, we are blessed to have the following news to report: Fred and Bertha Ryals have aranged for all evening meals (6 pm to 7 pm) to be provided by various members of the congregation and our choir. Nettie Bryant, a former parishoner, has committed to providing and packing lunches for our guests. Anyone who wants to assist her in that endeavor each evenng is more than welcome. Our Craft-a-Palooza raised $584.25 and will pay for the bus transportation ($350.00) and U-Haul rental ($50); which leaves us $184.25 for breakfast foods, snacks, coffee (and fixings), drinks, and paper goods. Thank you to all who assisted with

and supported the fundraiser! (See our webpage for pictures of some of the beautiful arrangements.) We will also be soliciting additional help with breakfast food and snack items from Lauer's, Panera and the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, in an effort to stretch our food dollars. Dan Prince has offered to cook breakfast every morning. Please let Terry ([email protected]) or Jim ([email protected]) know if you can help Dan with getting breakfast cooked, served and clean- up between 5:30 am and 7:30 am, any day except Sunday that week. (Sunday is when our guests sleep in and generally get their own cereal or microwaveable breakfast.) Additional areas of need remain. We need people to be available to talk with our guests, offer an activity, play games or just be at the church between 7 pm and 10 pm each evening. Currently we have 2 -3 evenings covered by Chuck Wheeler. Activities include one evening with “Pet Portraits” by Pam and friends and one with Adult Coloring Books and Card-making by Terry. We also have lots of board games, if you just want to come in and play a game of checkers! Fred Ryals will also have TV hooked up so our guests can watch fooball. Sue McDonald and Terry will offer transportation for laundry on Wednesday evening (11/28) between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Additional

transportation to the laundromat by Filers off Ft. Smallwood and Hog Neck Road is needed. If you can transport 3 or 4 men and their laundry (you do not have to stay at the laundromat) let us know. Also, if you would like to provide laundry supplies (detergent pods and dryer sheets and rolls of quarters), please let us know via the above noted e-mails, or see Sue. Last but not least, we need overnight hosts. Overnight shifts of two people each (one must be male) are 10 pm to 6 am. We are also allowing 4 hour shifts (10 pm to 2 am and 2 am to 6am) for those who cannot commit to an entire night. Napping is allowed (as long as one person is awake) and you can bring your own comfortable (portable) chair to set up in the Undercroft or Sanctuary. The overnight shift is really simple. The guys pretty much police themselves and go to sleep upstairs fairly early (it's a long day on the streets); but occasionally someone may need to come down and get their medicine or an OTC medicine, which is kept in a locked box. We provide access to the medication, we do not administer it. So far, we only have one person committed to covering an overnight shift...which is clearly not enough. Please consider helping in this ministry and contact Jim or Terry to volunteer. If you have any questions or want to know more, our next planning meeting, with soup and bread, is November 5, Monday evening, at 6:30 pm. Thank-you for your support of our congregation's ministry to “the least of these”. (Matt 25:40) Terry, Jim and Dan, Site Coordinators for Winter Relief

LANCELOT ANDREWES

26 SEPT

Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626), Bishop of Winchester, was on the committee of scholars that produced the King James Translation of the Bible, and probably contributed more to that work than any other single person. It is accordingly no surprise to find him not only a devout writer but a learned and eloquent one, a master of English prose, and learned in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and eighteen other languages. His sermons were popular in his own day, but are perhaps too academic for most modern readers. He prepared for his own use a manuscript notebook of Private Prayers, which was published after his death. The material was apparently intended, not to be read aloud, but to serve as a guide and stimulus to devout meditation. What follows is a brief extract from the section for Thursday Morning. The reader will note that he commemorates three events associated with Thursday: (1) the creation of air and water animals (mostly birds and fish) on the Fifth Day of Creation as described in Genesis 1; (2) the institution of the Sacrament of the Lord's supper by Our Lord Jesus Christ on the evening before He was crucified (Matthew 26); and (3) the Ascension of Our Lord into heaven forty days after His resurrection (Acts 1).

by James Kiefer

PRAYER - Almighty God, who gavest thy servant Lancelot Andrewes the gift of thy holy Spirit and made him a man of prayer and a faithful pastor of thy people: Perfect in us what is lacking of thy gifts, of faith, to increase it, of hope, to establish it, of love, to kindle it, that we may live in the life of thy grace and glory; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH

17 OCT

After the Apostles, Ignatius was the second bishop of Antioch in Syria. His predecessor, of whom little is known, was named Euodius. Whether he knew any of the Apostles directly is uncertain. Little is known of his life except for the very end of it. Early in the second century (perhaps around 107 AD, during the reign of the Emperor Trajan), he was arrested by the Imperial authorities, condemned to death, and transported to Rome to die in the arena. By thus dealing with a leader, the rulers hoped to terrify the rank and file. Instead, Ignatius took the opportunity to encourage them, speaking to groups of Christians at every town along the way. When the prison escort reached the west coast of Asia Minor, it halted before taking ship, and delegations from several Asian churches were able to visit Ignatius, to speak with him at length, to assist him with items for his journey, and to bid him an affectionate farewell and commend him to the grace of God. In response he wrote seven letters that have been preserved: five to congregations that had greeted him, en masse or by delegates (Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Philadelphians, and Smyrnaeans), one to the congregation that would greet him at his destination (Romans), and one to Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna and disciple of the Apostle John.

by James Kiefer

PRAYER - Almighty God, we praise thy name for thy bishop and martyr Ignatius of Antioch, who offered himself as grain to be ground by the teeth of wild beasts that he might present to thee the pure bread of sacrifice. Accept, we pray thee, the willing tribute of our lives, and give us a share in the pure and spotless offering of thy Son Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

WRITINGS OF LANCELOT ANDREWES

COMMEMORATION Blessed art Thou, O Lord who didst bring forth of water moving creatures that have life, and whales, and winged fowls: and didst bless them, so as to increase and multiply. The things concerning the Ascension: Set up Thyself, O God, above the heavens and Thy glory above all the earth. By thine Ascension draw us withal unto Thee, O Lord, so as to set our affections on things above, and not on things on the earth. By the awful mystery of Thy Holy Body and Precious Blood in the evening of this day: Lord, have mercy. FAITH

Coming unto God, I believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him: I know that my Redeemer liveth; that He is the Christ the Son of the Living God; that He is indeed the Saviour of the world; that He came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. Through the grace of Jesus Christ we believe that we shall be saved even as our fathers withal. I believe verily to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Thou are worthy, O Lord and our God, the Holy One, to receive the glory and the honour and the power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.

THANKSGIVING O my Lord, my Lord, I thank Thee for that I am, that I am alive, that I am rational: for nurture, preservation, governance: for education, citizenship, religion: for Thy gifts of grace, nature, estate: for redemption, regeneration, instruction: for calling, recalling, further calling manifold: for forbearance, longsuffering, long longsuffering towards me, many times, many years, until now: for all good offices I have received, good speed I have gotten: for any good thing done: for the use of things present, thy promise and my hope touching the fruition of the good things to come: for my parents honest and good, teachers gentle, benefactors always to be had in remembrance, colleagues likeminded, hearers attentive, friends sincere, retainers faithful: for all who have stood me in good stead by their writings, their sermons, conversations, prayers, examples, rebukes, wrongs: for these things and all other, which I wot of, which I wot not of, open and secret, things I remember, things I have forgotten withal, things done to me after my will or yet against my will, I confess to Thee and bless Thee and give thanks unto Thee, and I will confess and bless and give thanks to Thee all the days of my life. What thanks can I render to God again for all the benefits that He hath done unto me?
