2014/2015 ANNUAL REPORT

United Way has a long and proud history in the region – 78 years and $149 Million raised on behalf of our community. As an organization, United Way is focused on building upon our past and moving forward to engage with our donors and supporters in new and compelling ways by creating a greater understanding of our role and our impact. Our mission is to improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action.We do this through our dual role as a year-round fundraiser and impact funder. Working in collaboration with community leaders from business, labour, government and the non-profit sector, United Way is committed to meeting the needs of our most vulnerable citizens today, while also focusing on the future, to address the root causes of social issues and create sustainable change. Every year our community steps forward to join our movement. With the generous support of our workplace and individual donors last year United Way invested $4.9 Million across the Capital Regional District. These funds ensured support for over 90 programs which helped 23,000 families, 45,000 individuals and 11,000 children and youth access a broad network of services. Thanks to the efforts of so many in our community - working together in a United Way - we are changing lives.

WORKING TOGETHER IN A UNITED WAY

IT TAKESA COMMUNITYWe know that our collaborative approach and collective effort is what sets United Way apart as a leader in the sector. We are fortunate to be able to draw on the skills and knowledge of our many volunteers including our Board of Directors, Impact Steering Council, Campaign Cabinet, Leaders Committee, Labour Committee and our Youth Now and United Now Councils to reach our goals. These volunteers along with our 11,000 donors and 500 worksites helped raise $5.7 Million for our community in 2014. In addition to the support from our many workplace donors, we foster ongoing relationships with leadership and individual donors who believe in United Way’s ability to build a strong and caring community. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, volunteers and supporters, more children are preparing to enter kindergarten ready to learn, more young people are graduating high school ready for post secondary or the workforce, more adults are advancing their employment and financial stability, and more seniors are living independently.

SPIRIT OFGENEROSITYIn celebration of our donors, both inside and outside the workplace, our Spirit Awards recognized the efforts of over 500 worksites and 11,000 donors resulting in 74 nominees, 32 finalists and 14 award recipients. A STRONG & STABLENETWORKPeople in crisis often require more than one service to get the assistance they need to improve their lives. At United Way we work hard to ensure our community can access a strong and stable network of services at all times. As the largest non-government funder in the region, we are committed to a multi-year funding approach which offers stability to our funded community partners and allows them to focus on program delivery. Our funding decisions are informed by our community. We regularly consult with our partners and we engage with subject matter experts in the fields of substance abuse and mental health, child services, family services, food security, employment and housing to provide us with a deeper understanding of how to invest donor dollars. We target our investments to achieve maximum impact at a grassroots level. We know that by focusing our efforts into the priority areas of kids, poverty and community, we are able to create the type of change our region requires to succeed. Through our network of services we are helping individuals and families to become more self-sufficient and to live independently.

Every year a special group of individuals who we refer to as Loaned Representatives (LRs) work alongside United Way staff during our campaign. These individuals are ‘loaned’ from businesses and organizations wishing to give back to their community while providing a unique professional development opportunity for their staff. Our team appreciates the energy and many talents that LRs have brought to our workplace. In addition, this longstanding program is another way we are able to help offset our costs while providing the skills and expertise needed to fulfill our campaign. Many thanks to the companies leading the way through our loaned representative program in 2014 including: Canada Revenue Agency, Public Works and Government Services Canada, BC Pension Corporation, University of Victoria, Camosun College and Island Health. Another important group helping to spread our message into workplaces are the internal champions known as Employee Campaign Chairs (ECCs). Last year, we had over 300 ECCs volunteer their time to be part of the United Way movement. A huge thank you to these dedicated individuals for executing such amazing campaigns.

PEOPLEPOWER

Faces from Island Health: Kelly Norman, Nuclear Medicine Technician, has been an LR with United Way for the past eight years. During our 2014 campaign she worked with internal champion and ECC Tracy Hutton, Executive Assistant, Operations and Support Services.

OUR PARTNERS MAKE IT POSSIBLEPartnerships are at the core of United Way’s work. Coming together with business, government, the non-profit sector and labour make it possible for us to deliver on our mission to engage individuals and build community. Our partners believe in making our community a great place to live, work and raise a family. None more so than our labour partners whose tremendous contribution is so evident year after year during our campaign. In 2014, 53% of all the money raised in workplaces came from sites that are unionized. United Way and the labour community share a common vision that a wide range of social and public services should be accessible to all. Labour representatives volunteer on United Way’s Board of Directors, Campaign Cabinet, Labour Committee, and as Loaned Representatives as well as in our workplace campaigns.
