Ed AsnerA Live Interview On StageSeptember 14 , 2014 at 3pm

Ed Asner is one of the most honored actors in the history of television. Asner is best known for his comedic and dramatic crossover as the gruff but soft-hearted journalist Lou Grant, the role he originated on the landmark TV newsroom comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Lou Grant’s story continued in the newspaper-set drama Lou Grant, which earned Asner five Emmys and three Golden Globe Awards. Asner received two more Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for the mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. Most recently, he voiced Carl Fredricksen in the Disney Pixar animated film Up. He has also recently appeared in shows like Royal Pains, Hot in Cleveland, Hawaii Five-0 and Law & Order: SVU, among others. A passionate and informed spokesperson for the causes, Asner is a frequent speaker on labor issues and an ally for some of the acting industry’s older artists.General Public: $25 Senior citizenS: $15 Faculty/StaFF/alumni: $15 Student: $10

I am excited to present the 2014-2015 Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts season brochure. It is a landmark year for Sacred Heart University’s Performing Arts Department as we welcome a record number

of new students to the growing program. The Performing Arts Department showcases a myriad of talents including the band’s incredible musicianship, the choir’s diverse repertoire, the dance program’s versatility and theatre program’s flair for drama through dialogue and song.

I am especially looking forward to these performances because our students are so talented. I know this to be true, but every year they continue to amaze me. The Edgerton Center has always been a space for creation and entertainment – this year will be no exception.

Our goal, as always, is to share the talents of our students, guest performers and lecturers with our friends and neighbors in the surrounding area as well as with the University community. I am sure you will find something inside this brochure to pique your interest.

I hope you will join me at the Edgerton Center for as many of these performances as you can. You will find me front and center whenever our talented Sacred Heart students are on stage.

Sincerely,

John J. Petillo, Ph.D. President

An Immigrant’s Storynovember 20-22, 2014 at 8pm november 23, 2014 at 3pm

By John Van Druter

One of the best-loved stories ever told of immigrants in America, this timeless play, based on the book Mama’s Bank Account by Kathryn Forbes, became not only a hit play, but a successful radio, TV show and movie. The oldest daughter, in this family of tight-knit Norwegian immigrants in San Francisco at the turn of the century, takes us through her memories of their struggles with family conflict, loyalty, crisis and financial problems, but most of all her memories of Mama.

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Widely acknowledged as Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, Sweeney Todd is set amongst London’s seedy side streets and laced with Sondheim’s characteristically brilliant wit and dark humor. This landmark musical depicts the barber Sweeney Todd’s savage quest for justice and retribution after years of false imprisonment. Aided by harridan pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett, who is secretly in love with him, he sets out to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family. Combining comic turns and chilling drama, music hall-style numbers and hauntingly beautiful romantic songs, Sweeney Todd offers a fascinating portrait of a man driven to madness by injustice.

The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers, and a wall. The narrator invites the audience to join the cast on a journey of imagination, music, moonlight, and magic as the girl and boy fall in love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that “without a hurt, the heart is hollow.” The famous score includes the classics Try To Remember, They Were You, and Soon It’s Gonna Rain.
