Ever been asked about somethingthat you knew was never going tohappen? For example, every year

someone will innocently ask, "Do youthink the Cubs will win the WorldSeries this year?" My answer, "Doyou mean, 'Will they win the pennantin my lifetime!?'" We have all beenfaced with similar questions andsometimes a simple "no" is notenough to convey the high level ofimpossibility that we may feel aboutthe situation. So nearly every culturearound the globe has a specialphrase or unique idiom to bring thepoint home. Here are some of my

favorites from the List of Idioms ofImprobability:Hebrew- "When hair grows on thepalm of my hand"

Russian- "When the crawfishwhistles on the mountainTurkish- "When the fish climbs thepoplar tree"In the Unites States, we have thecolorful saying, "When pigs fly." (Notto be confused with "Flying Toasters"which was a popular screen saver inthe early 90s.)

Throughout the Bible, we are facedwith a number of situations which, before they happen, would havemade any of us say, "When pigs fly!"

"You want us, a bunch of ex-slavesfrom Egypt to walk around that huge

wall of Jericho and believe that it willjust fall down? When pigs fly""Turn the other cheek?"When pigs fly"Always forgive my neighbor?" Whenpigs fly"God, you forgive me?When pigs fly.

Throughout Lent we are going toexplore some of the stories andrealities in the life and ministry ofJesus that make us ask, "When pigsfly.." Sometimes it might be thechallenging call of God on our lives.Other times, it might be the power ofGod's love and graciousness. But in

the end, we will once again findourselves face to face at the momen

just outside Jerusalem where God'srichest grace met our deepest need.Courtyard updateIn the narthex of the sanctuary youwill find large boards with drawings othe proposed hospitality courtyard. Please take time this Sunday to lookthem over and provide any feedbackto Steve Streich and his team.

    Teen

    Musical

April 25, 26 & 27Spring is coming and here atChaparral that means that

    preparations for the Stained

    Glass Teen Choir's musical

    production are well underway!

This year, our talented teens will

    revisit Gilbert and Sullivan's most

popular show,The Pirates ofPenzance; or, The Slave of Duty. It

is a show about the dichotomy

    between the dictates of one's

own conscience, and his/her dutyto others; it is a show about those

that have too much, those that

have too little, and those that live

    in-between; but, most

    importantly, it is a show

aboutPirates! This will be the fourth time the

teen choir has tackled this show,

though it has been over a decade

since the last production. Inupholding the Teen Choir's

    history of excellence, we are

    always looking for volunteers to

aid in the many facets of live

    musical theatre. Please contact

Jackie Huber or Andrew Sievers if

    you are interested in getting

    involved!

Meet the ErvensTwo very familiar faces in ChaparralsSanctuary Service are Jim and Susan

Erven. Look for them on stage creatingmusic during our praise songs...Jim on

electric guitar and Susan singing with theTeam. As a teenager, Susan was active atChaparral with her parents, Rod and

Janet Thompson. Jim arrived on the scene a little later. His introduction to ourfellowship came on their first date. Susan invited him to Chaparrals Christmas

Progressive Dinner, an annual event when the Church was young. In due time, they were married in the East Hall, our worship space at that time. Their ceremonwas in front of the Larry Toschik stained glass window. If you have never noticed

this lovely commissioned window, stop in and view it. Susan talks fondly of being part of all of our transitions, especially recalling her father, Rod, then an elder,

helping to break ground for the first building at our current location.Susan and Jim have raised their four children among us

and now take special pleasure in having their grandson aChaparral. As Susan put it, Its wonderful to see life

come full circle! And, included in their childrensinvolvement at Church is the fun of singing as a family.

addition to making music, the family enjoys hiking withtheir German Shepherd and two Siberian Huskies.

Jim and Susan have always sung in choir and in many small ensembles in ourMusic Ministry...Jim in mens quartets and Susan in ladies trios and in Outburst!

Both have sung forever in our couples ensemble, Ark. They are a talented pairand have delighted guests at our Sweetheart Breakfast, in choir fun programs and

often at Easter Sunrise Services. In recent years they have become a veryimportant part of our praise music in Sanctuary and also continue to support the

choir and sing duets in worship. Thank you, Jim and Susan. We love andappreciate you!

I joined teen choir when every cool kid at Chaparral did,7thgrade. When you grow up in a church like Chaparral,

you tend to idealize those amazing musicians who camebefore you. I remember watching Bye Bye Birdie andbeing so excited about joining this incredible group in the

fall. We had some amazing times. Every yearI lookedforward to the choir trips. Some of my best memories ofmiddle school and high school were during those trips.

My most memorable story, though probably not my favorite, was during my freshman year

when we did Sound of Music. I was the understudy for Lisel. Well, it was going to be my firstkiss, ever, and it was in front of every mom in the Church. Lets just say there is a lot of

pictorial evidence of what should be one of the more private memories in a teens life. Talkabout embarrassing moments. In retrospect it makes me laugh and remember it fondly but

14-year-old Kristina was terrified. Because of teen choir I got my first kiss, I have lifelongfriends and memories I will never forget.Teen Choir gave me so many opportunities and chances to do what I loved in a safe environment with so muchsupportwhich I needed, badly. In 2006 I was accepted into the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in L.A. I was

so excited I didnt know what to do with myself. I was going to get to study with incredible teachers in the city of dreams.I moved to L.A. the summer after graduation and attended AMDAs MusicalTheatre conservatory program. It was a crazy two years filled with blood, sweat

and tears, literally. I walked into the program with a little bit of talent,

determination and no self-confidence. By the time I graduated I had gainedrecognition from my peers and teachers, not to mention a coveted solo spot inmy graduation showcase. My father, who has always supported me, had

reservations about me going to AMDA, cause lets face it being an actor isntnecessarily a lucrative career. After my showcase he came to me and said, Youare meant to do this for the rest of your life, never give up. I will never forgetthat moment.Shortly after graduating the conservatory program AMDA began an BFA program

which I jumped on in a heartbeat. We were the first class and the guinea pigs. I grew exponentially in that next year anda half. I was the lead in AMDAs first book musical, Little Shop of Horrors. It was my first lead period, and the first time I

had ever belted in public. While in school I landed my first professional gig at a regional theatre in Thousand OaksCalifornia, 42ndSt. It was the most incredible experience. We did all original choreography, original costumes and sets.

From there I just auditioned for anything I could get my hands on. I was hungry and had a huge learning curve to catch

up on.I spent the next couple of years doing show after show and some small film stuff here and there. I joined a wonderfultheatre company, The Road. I was a member there for two years and got to work with some very talented people. I was

in several workshops of new plays there and learned a lot about my craft. My first big job was when I got to do Cabaretwith Dick Van Dyke. I can now check off my bucket list that I made Dick Van Dyke laugh. From there I caught the attention of a big casting director and did a reading of a new musical, ModRock. It was so muchfun getting to build a character that no one else had touched before. Some of the lines that are now in the script are

ones I accidentally wrote. That brings us to the beginning of this past year that brought more success than I had thoughtpossible in one year. I played Vivienne in Legally Blondethen did a short film, went on hold from a national commercial, produced my first workshop of a play, worked on a staged reading of Mack and Mabelwith the biggest regional theatre in

L.A. and landed the leading role in my first international tour, Teresa in Barbie, Live! The Musical.I could not be more blessed. I attest this success to hard work, my parents and friends who never lose faith in me, andGod. None of this would have been possible without my faith. This business is hard and cruel but God is neverchanging. He is my rock. I could not be more grateful and I cant wait to see what He brings me this year. We still have

a couple more months of tour, then who knows where He will take me next. - Kristina Miller

Cupid's MessengersThe teen choir will be offering carnations decorated with a love scripture onSunday, February 9. You can pre-order your flowers by coming to the Holy

Grub booth on February 2. Donations gladly accepted!pg. 7
