Hopping soon to a park near youDear neighbours, guess what?! Winter is almost over and it’s

time to get outside again. If you are new to Mayfield West, SouthFields Village, Anthem,

(call it what you will), you may not know that this magazine started as a small newsletter just for what used to be called ‘Strawberry Fields.’

Back then its only purpose was to let people know about the 2010 Community Day. My motivation has always been to do what I can to make sure we live in a safe, welcoming, vibrant and enjoyable community. So building ways to connect became a top priority.

Over the past four years, I’m thrilled to say that our community has continued to come out and celebrate living here. This year, we’re taking a break from holding the event in mid July. Instead, SouthFields Village Public School is putting on its ‘Spring Fling’ on May 24th and I hope to see all of you out there!

After the first couple of issues of SouthFields Village Voice (that’s what the magazine used to be called), it became clear that there’s a lot more to Caledon than I ever imagined. I got excited by all the things that other villages in Caledon do all the time. So I decided to do more than just tell you about these things: I set about showing you the possibilities; creating additional opportunities for neighbours to meet so that we could become familiar with more than just the people we can see from our front doors.

Today, people who don’t live here routinely marvel at the level of community involvement that we have in SouthFields Village. Of course I do need to put in the caveat that in my mind it’s all just Mayfield West and it doesn’t matter if you’re in Anthem or SouthFields or Valleywood. Communities define themselves and everybody is welcome to take part and contribute to embellishing the fabric of ours.

an eggscellent opportunity

But the event that I most want to remind you about is the 2013 community egg hunt! That’s because after over 300 people showed up last year, several folks approached me about running it again this year. I posted on the Caledon Spectrum Facebook page that I couldn’t possibly run it alone and within minutes had a team of twelve people offering to help. How cool is that? So we are doing it again this April (on the 19th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.).

We’ll have the Easter Bunny, Sparky the Fire Dog, games, raffle prizes, chocolate, candy treats and lots of people excited about the chance to be outside to enjoy the weather and each other.

how i manage to get all this stuff done

People often say to me “I don’t know how you do it!” Well, I’ll tell you: effective communication, like minded souls and funding!

Easy access to important and/or interesting information is vital to the overall health of a community. That’s what Caledon Spectrum is all about.

Having said that, don’t look for another print edition in the near future. The quarterly print format varies too much from my main goal: too much happens between issues and if you already follow Caledon Spectrum on Facebook, Twitter or through the website’s RSS feed you know exactly what I’m talking about.

If you haven’t done so yet, make sure to ‘Like’ our Facebook page (facebook.com/CaledonSpectrum) and follow our Twitter feed (@CaledonSpectrum). Anybody not on social media, can still stay connected by subscribing to the caledonspectrum.com RSS feed. We aren’t the only information sharing resource in the area but we do try to consolidate important information to make it easier for you. What’s more, we tend to make the news just as much as we share it and welcome contributed content.

If you have any trouble posting to the Facebook page or if you want me to post something on the website (or if want to say something to the community but don’t want to attach your own name to it), feel free to email me at [email protected].

so who does pay for all this stuff?Did you ever wonder who pays for all of these community

building efforts? The truth is that I don’t want to live in a community where somebody comes knocking on my door to ask for $5 every time they want to do a street party or and egg hunt. So, I’ve gone to great lengths to not knock on your doors to ask for donations, either.

Instead, for the past four years I’ve been knocking on the doors of local businesses and asking them to support our community.

At the same time, perhaps not everybody realizes that it can easily cost over a $1,000 to run something as simple as an egg hunt and closer to at least $7,000 for a community day. So while much of this year’s egg hunt is covered by local business sponsors (including PRAS Publishing), this year we also turned to crowd source funding. So far, about seven per cent of the costs associated with the egg hunt have been covered by donations from residents.

We still don’t want to knock on neighbours’ doors asking for money. But if you have a business, consider being part of a local service directory (like a ‘SouthFields We Do That!’ Idea). Or if you don’t mind contributing, throw in a few dollars when you come out to events. With a community this size, just the cost of spreading the word can be staggering and that’s before getting into insurance, permits, rentals and giveaways.

Warm regards,

Golfing for CFIn August of 2012 SouthFields’ Gillian Maramieri gave birth

to Matthew, a beautiful baby boy. Virtually immediately she discovered that Matthew has Cystic Fibrosis (CF), an inherited disorder that affects the lungs and digestive system. For Matthew, Jake (another boy living in SouthFields Village) and many others like them, it is a struggle to do something that the rest of us take for granted: breathing. According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada approximately one in every 2,500 children born in Canada is diagnosed with CF.

At the moment, this disease is incurable. But we have every reason to believe that a cure can and will be found: through research and the development of comprehensive treatment programmes the life expectancy of people with CF has been extended into their 20’s, 30’s and beyond.

As a family, the Maramieris decided to focus their efforts on raising money to find a cure. They now host an annual charitable golf tournament for this cause.

The 2nd Annual Mulligans Fore Matthew Charitable Golf Tournament takes place on June 13th 2014, at the Caledon Golf & Country Club. Last year Mulligans Fore Matthew donated $17,000 to Cystic Fibrosis Canada and this year the Maramieris are looking forward to another successful event.

How well are you connected and what is Caledon Spectrum anyway?by Yevgenia Casale

Until September of 2013 Caledon Spectrum was a quarterly magazine that got distributed door-to-door throughout much of Caledon. It was chalk full of really great information about Caledon and all of the issues are still available on our website.

It is also an online, community driven, information hub. Through caledonspectrum.com, Twitter (@CaledonSpectrum) and Facebook (facebook.com/CaledonSpectrum) we strive to bring you information that affects residents in this area.

But we do more than that. We continually look for and champion ways to bring people together to help foster the bonds necessary for a strong, vibrant and healthy community.

what caledon spectrum is not, anymore

Although we may put out a special edition from time to time, usually driven by an upcoming community gathering, we are no longer producing a quarterly print publication.

Amongst other reasons, there’s simply too much that goes on between issues so we’re giving the printing presses a rest and focusing to online messaging. That’s why it is so important that you help us share the social media message with your friends and neighbours.

Frankly, we need your help to grow the online community so that your voice will count and so that you don’t miss a single thing. This year and in the coming years there’s going to be a lot of activity of a different kind for SouthFields Village.

Our community centres will be commencing construction, as will the downtown core. In a few short years we’ll have a new elementary level Catholic School and the influx of commercial retail and active recreational uses. Across Heart Lake Road the village will also include and industrial commercial element.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of “Hey, what’s that crazy noise in the middle of the night? Does anybody else hear it?” Sometimes, it’s because some aggressive door-to-door sales guys are at it again and neighbours want to warn neighbours. Sometimes it might even be because a suspicious looking vehicle is hanging around a lot and people want to let each other know.

Staying connected is how we can all do our part to stay safe and have increased control over what and how things go on in Mayfield West.

So, go on: like, follow, share, contribute. .CS
