DESCRIPTION

National City's 2014 Mariachi Festival & Competition is a community-friendly event providing entertainment for families to come together and celebrate San Diego's Mexican heritage through mariachi music, traditional ballet folklorico dancing, and a celebration of arts, culture, and culinary delights. The mariachi program supports today's youth in their artistic, individual and educational development. This year, we are offering mariachi practitioners a two day music conference on Thursday, March 13 and Friday, March 14 at the University of San Diego. The conference culminates to the mariachi festival and competition on Saturday, March 15 at Pepper Park.

My most sincere and heartfelt thanks goes to the National City Chamber of Commerce for organizing the Mariachi Festival and Competition. This regional event is important in preserving a strong sense of culture and heritage in our county due to our proximity to the international border with Mexico.

Today’s event will be recognized internationally because of the talent that will be showcased and the music that will touch the lives of those who listen. I hope you enjoy all of today’s performances. If this happens to be your first encounter with Ma-riachi music, I hope you develop a love for a most unique type of music.

Congratulations to the members of the chamber, as well as staff. I commend you for your efforts and your diligence in making this event happen year after year.

WELCOMEThe National City Chamber of Commerce and the VisitNationalCity.com campaign welcome you to the 2nd Annual Mariachi Festival & Competition!

The Mariachi Festival and Competition is a unique event that celebrates our community’s vibrant culture, attracts visitors to National City from throughout the United States and Mexico, and supports youth development through mariachi music. This event is realized through a dynamic partnership among the business community, school district, government partners, and creative talents.

Today’s festival features free admission, merchant booths, mariachi and ballet folklórico performances, live entertainment, an interactive children’s area, food vendors, arts & crafts, and music demonstrations. These three days of celebration honor the beauty and splendor of mariachi music.

We want to especially thank our sponsors and collaborators that made these events possible. We received extraordinary support from the offices of Senator Ben Hueso, the Mexican Consul Remedios Gomez-Arnau, the Mexican Tourism Board, the office of Congressman Juan Vargas, Mariachi Scholarship Foundation, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego, the University of San Diego (USD), the City of National City, the Port of San Diego, Southwest Airlines, Five Star Tours, La Maestra Community Health Center, National City Chamber staff, over 30 volunteers, and our organizing committee.

The mariachi festival was created by HMC Advertising in 1999, and originally held at the Viejas Outlet Center. Its revival in National City celebrates art, culture, music, community building, and education on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The Mariachi Festival is a bi-national event drawing in spectators and consumers from Mexico and the United States.

Visit our new tourism website, www.VisitNationalCity.com, to learn more about upcoming events, hotel discounts, and visitor activities in the area.

Sincerely,

John Snyder, Chairman Jacqueline L. Reynoso, CEO
