NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes

the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

The Three D’s:

DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience.

DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

In 2013, Covenant became members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The conference is comprised of schools from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with one associate member in football.

In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont.

In all sports, with the exception of cross country, the top eight teams in the conference regular season standings advance to participate in the conference tournament.

Katie Stanford Head CoachKatie Stanford will begin her fourth year of coaching both

the men’s and women’s cross country teams in the fall of

2014.

She joined the athletic staff as the head men’s and

women’s cross country coach in the spring of 2011.

Following the departures of former head coaches Debby

Vannoy and Scott Williams, Stanford became the third

cross country coach in as many years during her first

season with the Scots and Lady Scots.

Stanford took over a Covenant cross country program that

was coming off of a very successful 2010 campaign during

which it ‘unofficially’ saw its men’s and women’s teams

respectively finish first and second in the Great South Athletic Conference Championship meet. In her inaugural

2011 campaign with the teams, Stanford continued the squads’ recent successes, guiding the Lady Scots to an

“unofficial” first-place finish and the Scots to a second-place prize at the GSAC Championships. Under her direction,

the teams combined for two wins, six runner-up performances, and 10 top-five finishes in 2011.

Success also found the programs in the 2012 campaign. The women’s team once again unofficially won the Great

South Athletic Conference championship and two runners earned All-GSAC honors. Stanford also successfully

oversaw the revitalization of the cross country trails on Covenant’s campus and, because of this, Covenant hosted a

meet for the first time in recent memory.

Stanford continued the pattern of success in 2013 as Covenant moved into the USA South Athletic Conference.

The men’s team captured the USA South title, while women’s runner Beth Burgess was the individual USA South

champion on the women’s side. Both teams made an appearance at the NCAA South Regional meet for the first

time in school history.

Prior to Covenant, Stanford served as the cross country and distance track coach for Chattanooga’s Notre Dame

High School, where she worked for one cross country season (2010) and two track seasons (2010-2011), following

a four year stint as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s assistant cross country coach and head recruiter.

During her time there, the Lady Mocs were the Southern Conference cross country champions from 2006-2008,

and the Mocs were runners-up in 2005, 2007, and 2008. Stanford also served as the women’s assistant cross country

coach at the University of West Georgia from 2003-2004 while obtaining her Master of Public Administration.

Stanford attended Samford University and earned a BA in Political Science in 2003. She competed for the Bulldogs

in cross country, indoor and outdoor track from 1998 to 2003. During her collegiate career, she twice earned All-

Conference track honors and was the Atlantic Sun Conference 1500 meter champion in 2002.

Matt Gorter will begin his first year of assisting head coach Katie Stan-

ford with both men’s and women’s cross country teams.

Gorter ran three years of cross country at Covenant. In his senior year,

he earned USA South All-Conference first team honors after finishing

sixth in the conference meet. He also earned a spot on the USA South

All-Academic team.

Cross Country Programs Aiming High in 2014

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- For a third consecutive year, the Covenant cross country teams will open their seasons at

home. The teams will once again host the Mountaintop Invitational on Friday evening. The women’s event begins

at 6 p.m., while the men go at 6:30 p.m.

Coming off last year’s success, both teams have high expectations heading into the 2014 campaign.

The men’s team became the first program in Covenant history to claim an official conference title at the NCAA

Division III level when they took the USA South crown last November. With key returners coming back this season,

the Scots have been picked as the favorite to capture the conference once again.

“The guys want to repeat and that is their top priority,” said fourth-year head coach Katie Stanford. “Our goal is

winning the conference. The new guys are talking about repeating as much as the seniors. We know that we can do

it.”

Leading the charge on the men’s side are seniors Stephen Dillon and Jack Williams. Dillon had four top five finishes

a year ago and placed second at the USA South Championships meet, while earning first team All-USA South

honors. A USA South All-Conference second teamer, Williams had his best season in 2013 and looks to continue

that in his senior year.

Junior Hunter Rasmussen along with sophomores Eliot Gardner, Justin Jantomaso, Caleb Spykstra and Charles

Taylor also return from last year.

Stanford boosted the team with a strong recruiting class that brought in three freshmen and a transfer. The

freshman class includes Zach Atchison (Troutman, N.C.), Eliot Kaufmann (New York, N.Y.) and John Weaks (Perry,

Ga.) along with Wheaton (Ill.) transfer Graham Massot (Rochester, Minn.). Sophomore Phil Moore (Hershey, Pa.) also

joins the team this fall.

“We have a great recruiting class this year,” noted Stanford. “I am excited to see them compete.”

The women will be led by senior Beth Burgess. Burgess earned numerous accolades last year but her crowning

achievements were winning the USA South Individual title and setting a program record time in the 6k at the NCAA

South Regional.

“Beth looks strong and ready to go this year,” added Stanford. “She wants to lead our team to a successful season

and also build upon her performance from last season.”

As a team, the Covenant women finished second in last year’s USA South meet and is picked to finish as the

runner-up this year. Meredith was selected to repeat as USA South champions and is ranked ninth in the preseason

USTFCCCA South/Southeast region poll.

“The girls know that it will be tough to beat Meredith this season, but we believe we can compete with them,” said

Stanford. “We want to be at a level where we can compete with the top team in the conference.”

USA South All-Conference second teamers in junior Esther Anderson and sophomore Anna Hankal return this

season. Other returners include junior Ruthie Cargill and sophomore Grace Bodron.

Stanford’s recruiting class on the women’s side has five freshmen. Margaret Fitch (San Antonio, Texas), Jordan

Francis (Villa Rica, Ga.), Sarah Jo Griffith (Nashville, Tenn.), Abby Irwin (Issaquah, Wash.) and Julia Price (Nashville,

Tenn.) make up the 2014 freshman class.

“This recruiting class can step in right away and start contributing,” noted Stanford.

The 2014 year also marks the first full graduating class for Stanford as Dillon, Williams and Burgess have competed

all four years with Stanford as their head coach.

“I have been with these three the whole four years. It has been fun to see them grow as athletes and people,” said

Stanford of her senior class. “They have learned to be leaders by example and it is good for the younger athletes to

see that. They have been committed to the program and have gotten consistently better every year.”

The Mountaintop Invitational will be the largest of the three season opening events held on campus. Four teams -

Covenant, Maryville, Truett-McConnell and Reinhardt - will complete the field. The women’s race is a two-mile run,

while the men will face a 5k.

“This is a good way to kickoff our season on our own trail,” remarked Stanford. “It is a measuring stick to see

where our runners are and where they need to be. We are excited about having three teams joining us this year, as

opposed to one the previous years.”

Covenant has won the past two season opening meets it has hosted.

28 CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE 2014 COVENANT COLLEGE

It was a memorable year for both Covenant cross country teams as they competed in the NCAA Division III and the USA South Athletic Conference for the first time.

Under third-year head coach Katie Stanford, the two programs experienced fantastic seasons. The men captured the USA South title while women’s runner Beth Burgess claimed the top individual spot in the confer-ence meet and later broke a school record.

The men had three team titles on the season begin-ning with the Scots Opener in August. In that 5k, Cov-enant dominated conference foe Maryville to earn the first victory of the season. Four weeks later on Sept. 28, the men placed better than any other Division III school at the Greensboro Invitational, led by junior Stephen Dil-lon’s 20th place finish.

But the race the men’s team most looked forward to was the USA South Conference meet in early November. Competing on the same course from the Greensboro In-vitational, the men used that to their advantage as they beat out Methodist for the conference title, the eighth in program history. Dillon was once again at the head of the pack as he finished second, but the junior was joined by seniors Zach Smith and Matt Gorter who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Dillon, Smith, and Gorter all earned first team All-Con-ference while junior Jack Williams finished 13th at the conference meet to earn second team honors.

“The men wanted to win the conference and they went for it and didn’t hold back,” said Stanford. “It was close. We knew Methodist had gotten stronger late in the season and that they would be on our backs. Stephen had the best race of his career and he, Sean Hagstrom (Maryville) and Sydney Machokoto (Method-ist) did a great job of pushing each other early on.”

Although the women fell just short of a USA South title, placing second behind a strong Meredith squad, they also had a phenomenal season that was capped by Burgess’ individual USA South crown and later a pro-gram record.

First, Burgess, a junior from Nicholasville, Ky., had two victories on the year including at the conference meet where she ran the 6k in a time of 24:51.1 en route to the top spot.

“I am so proud of Beth,” remarked Stanford about Burgess after the meet. “I told her she could win and that she could take it out from the start and that’s exactly what she did. She made the decision at the beginning to win this race and never looked back.”

Burgess was joined on the first team All-Conference by sophomore Spookie Eaves while sophomore Esther Anderson and freshman Anna Hankal earned second team honors.

However Burgess’ outstanding season did not end there. As the teams competed in the NCAA Regional meet for the first time in school history, the junior made history of her own as she broke the program record in the 6k with a time of 23:58. The time was two seconds faster than the previous mark set by Hannah Matthews in 2010.

“I am so excited for Beth. Adding a school record to all her other accomplishments this season is icing on the cake,” added Stanford.

All told, the women had three team victories on the year beginning with the Scots Opener, followed by the Greensboro Invitational, and capped with a title at the Maryville Invitational.

In the NCAA meet, a combined nine runners set new personal marks. On the women’s side, Burgess, Hankal, junior Alicia Zanoni, and Eaves set new personal records. The men had Dillon, Gorter, Williams along with fresh-men Hunter Rasmussen and Eliot Gardner run personal bests.

It was a tremendous season for both programs as they broke new ground in school history with a conference title and strong showings throughout the year.

“I have been very blessed to work with this group of kids this year,” said Stanford about her teams. “We are going to miss Matt (Gorter) and Zach (Smith). They have done a great job leading this team and preparing our freshman.”

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to:
