NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of partici-pants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional

competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passion-ate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

The Three D’s:

DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III expe-rience.

DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

KATIE STANFORD• Head Coach• 5th Year

Katie Stanford will begin her fifth year of coaching both the men’s and women’s cross country teams in the fall of 2015.

Stanford has had a very successful tenure. Her teams have combined for four confer-ence championships, with the men’s and women’s teams each earning two.

In 2014, Stanford was named USA South Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year as she guided the Scots to their second straight conference title. The men also had the individual conference champion in Graham Massot. The women placed second in the conference meet for a second year in a row.

Overall in 2014, 10 runners (five on each side) earned All-USA South honors. Eliot Kaufmann was the Runner and Rookie of the Year on the men’s side while Beth Burgess was named Runner of the Year on the women’s side.

In 2011, Stanford took over a program that was coming off a very successful 2010 campaign during which it “unofficially” saw its men’s and women’s teams respectively finish first and second in the Great South Athletic Conference Championship meet. In her inaugural 2011 campaign with the teams, Stanford continued the squads’ recent successes, guiding the Lady Scots to an “unofficial” first-place finish and the Scots to a second-place prize at the GSAC Championships. Under her direction, the teams com-bined for two wins, six runner-up performances, and 10 top-five finishes in 2011.

Success also found the programs in the 2012 campaign. The women’s team once again unofficially won the Great South Athletic Conference championship and two runners earned All-GSAC honors. Stanford also successfully oversaw the revitalization of the cross country trails on Covenant’s campus and, because of this, Covenant was able to host meets. Covenant has hosted a season-opening event each of the last three years.

Stanford continued the pattern of success in 2013 as Covenant moved into the USA South Athletic Conference. The men’s team captured the USA South title, while women’s runner Beth Burgess was the individual USA South champion on the women’s side. Both teams made an appearance at the NCAA South Regional meet for the first time in school history.

She joined the athletic staff as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach in the spring of 2011. Following the departures of former head coaches Debby Vannoy and Scott Williams, Stanford became the third cross country coach in as many years during her first season with the Scots and Lady Scots.

Prior to Covenant, Stanford served as the cross country and distance track coach for Chattanooga’s Notre Dame High School, where she worked for one cross country season (2010) and two track seasons (2010-2011), following a four year stint as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s assistant cross country coach and head recruiter.

During her time at UTC, the Lady Mocs were the Southern Conference cross country champions from 2006-2008, and the Mocs were runners-up in 2005, 2007, and 2008. Stanford also served as the women’s assistant cross country coach at the University of West Georgia from 2003-2004 while obtaining her Master of Public Administration.

Stanford attended Samford University and earned a BA in Political Science in 2003. She competed for the Bulldogs in cross country, indoor and outdoor track from 1998 to 2003. During her collegiate career, she twice earned All-Conference track honors and was the Atlantic Sun Conference 1500 meter champion in 2002.

She and her husband, Trey, live on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, with their daughter, Taylor, and son, Noah, and attend North Shore Fellowship in North Chattanooga. Stanford is Level 1 certified under the USA Track and Field coaching education program.

SEASON PREVIEW 2015 CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE

PREVIEW: CROSS COUNTRY LOOKS FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS IN 2015

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Coming off another successful season in 2014, the Covenant cross country programs are looking to continue the run of excellence this year. Head coach Katie Stanford is entering her fifth year at the helm of both programs and has seen her men’s team win back-to-back USA South titles with the women finishing second each of the last two years.

The men are the preseason favorites to once again claim the USA South championship, while the women were selected second in their preseason poll.

The teams open the 2015 season on Friday evening by hosting the fourth annual Mountaintop Invitational. The women’s two-mile race begins at 6 p.m. with the men’s 5k following.

MEN’S OUTLOOK

Despite losing four key runners after last year’s USA South championship, the Scots look to be strong once again on the men’s side. Covenant was picked as the preseason favorite in the USA South for a second straight year.

Junior Graham Massot leads the way after winning the USA South Individual championship last year and placing 35th at the NCAA South/South-east Region meet to earn All-Region honors. Massot burst on the scene in his first year at Covenant after transferring from Wheaton (Ill.) as he was a two-time runner of the week in the conference along with his championship and regional performances.

“I look for Graham to get stronger and have the same type of season as last year,” Stanford said of her top returner. “He raced well all last year, but especially towards the end of the season.”

Stanford gains senior Hunter Rasmussen and hopes he can pick up where he left off two years ago. Rasmussen, the lone senior on the men’s side, did not run in 2014 as he recovered from an injury but has healed and looking for a strong showing in his final year. Rasmussen was a valuable member of the 2013 USA South championship team.

“Hunter is healthy again and should be in the mix for one of our top five finishers throughout the year,” added Stanford. “He wants to have a good year and finish his career well.”

Juniors Phil Moore and Eliot Gardner could also factor into Covenant’s team scoring this year along with sophomore Zach Atchison. Junior Charles Taylor rounds out the returners for the Scots this season.

Stanford collected a recruiting class that she believes will make an immediate impact. Freshmen Micah Sneller, Nathan Bierema, Josh Humpherys and Reed Vaughn all provide the Scots with depth and look to help lead the Scots back to another championship.

“All four will do well this year,” Stanford said of her recruiting class. “Vaughn, Humphreys and Bierema are experienced runners. Sneller did not run cross country until his senior year of high school, but has looked good so far.”

For Stanford, the question mark entering the season is who will fill the top five. With four key members of the team gone from last year’s squad, Stanford is looking for others to step up and fill the void.

“We’re just working out who can fill out those other spots in the top five,” noted Stanford. “We have some returners who could do it and we’ll need some of the freshmen to fill those slots also.”

WOMEN’S OUTLOOK

Covenant has finished second the last two years at the USA South championships and that’s where the Lady Scots are in the preseason poll enter-ing 2015. Beth Burgess graduated, but Stanford returns Ruthie Cargill and Esther Anderson along with other key contributors from last year and gained Spookie Eaves and Melanie White.

Cargill is the top returner from 2014. The senior had a breakout year as she earned USA South All-Conference second team honors and broke personal records in almost each event a season ago. Also returning is fellow senior Esther Anderson. Anderson was an All-USA South performer in 2013 and will be looking to get back to that point again this season.

“Ruthie had a great year last season and I think she will do well again this year,” Stanford said. “Together, Ruthie and Esther are team captains and will do a great job of showing the younger runners what our team is about and how to lead. It’s great to have that kind of leadership and they will be a big reason for the success of the team.”

Eaves and White return to the program after some time away. Eaves earned first team All-USA South honors as a sophomore in 2013 and has shown the ability to be the top runner. White’s only season of competition came as a freshman in 2012 when she was a Great South All-Freshmen team honoree.

Also returning is sophomore Margaret Fitch who had a tremendous start to her rookie campaign last season as she was a four-time recipient of the USA South Rookie Runner of the Week award. “Margaret got healthy over the summer, so I’m looking for her to get back to where she was at the start of last year,” Stanford added.

Sophomores Julia Price and Sarah Jo Griffith also return to boost the team.

Stanford’s recruiting class netted five freshmen in Juliette Henry, Stephanie Lutz, Amy Romstadt, Hannah Samuels and Lilly Smith.

Getting over the hump in the USA South is a tough task as two-time defeding champion Meredith looks to be strong once again. Stanford’s focus for the season is closing the gap between the top five runners and finishing higher in the region meet.

“The big goal is to keep moving up in the region because it will help us and the conference,” Stanford said. “But we also want to focus on the up-perclassmen leading the way and keeping everyone healthy.”

2014 SEASON REVIEW 2015 CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE

2014 SEASON REVIEWMEN

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- It was another impressive season for both Cov-enant men’s and women’s cross country programs. Under fourth-year head coach Katie Stanford, the teams continued to excel within the USA South and regionally.

MEN’S OVERVIEW

For a second straight year, the men’s team captured the USA South team championship while the Scots also had a runner earn the indi-vidual title. Additionally, the team placed two runners on the NCAA All-South Region honors for the first time in school history.

The Scots took home three team titles, but none was bigger than the USA South crown. For a second consecutive year, Covenant dominated the conference meet with five runners placing inside the top 10, led by an individual title from sophomore Graham Massot. Covenant’s 21 points in the event easily outdid Piedmont’s 41 as the Scots claimed back-to-back conference titles for the first time since 1994 and 1995 when the school was in the NAIA.

Massot was trailed by freshman Eliot Kaufmann (third), freshman John Weaks (fifth), senior Stephen Dillon (sixth) and senior Jack Williams (10th). Covenant had five runners earn all-conference honors and Stan-ford was named Coach of the Year.

Massot was one of two top runners for the Scots all season, but it was the freshman Kaufmann who took home some major hardware from the USA South.

Kaufmann was named both the Rookie and Runner of the Year in the USA South, just the second time in conference history that a freshman took both honors in the same year. He was also named the conference’s Rookie of the Week six times and Runner of the Week four times.

Both Kaufmann and Massot paced the Scots at the region meet. The two runners finished 34th (Kaufmann) and 35th (Massot) with sub-27 minute times in the 8k to earn a spot on the all-region team. As a team, Covenant finished 14th of 28 in the event.

“I am so happy for our men today,” Stanford said after the region meet on Nov. 15. “They wanted to improve within our region and they did just that. Our top four ran so well today and it was exciting to have Eliot [Kaufmann] and Graham [Massot] receive All-Region honors.”

2014 SEASON REVIEW 2015 CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE

2014 SEASON REVIEWWOMEN

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- It was another impressive season for both Cov-enant men’s and women’s cross country programs. Under fourth-year head coach Katie Stanford, the teams continued to excel within the USA South and regionally.

WOMEN’S OVERVIEW

Led by senior Beth Burgess, the women’s cross country team also excelled in 2014. Covenant won two meets and placed second, for a second straight year, at the USA South meet. The team wins came on Aug. 29 (Mountaintop Invitational) and Sept. 13 (Saucony Invitational).

Burgess capped her illustrious career with her best season. The Nicho-lasville, Kentucky, native earned USA South Runner of the Year honors and was Runner of the Week three times. Burgess broke her school record in the 6k with a time of 23:44 at the Sewanee Invitational in the second week of the season. Burgess had previously set the mark as a junior in 2013.

Burgess was not alone in compiling a career year. Junior Ruthie Cargill posted the best year of her collegiate career in 2014. The junior set multiple personal records throughout the year and earned USA South All-Conference second team honors with her ninth place finish at the conference event.

As a team, Covenant fell just short of a conference title as three points separated the Scots from top finisher Meredith. Covenant placed four runners inside the top 10 and had five make an all-conference team. Burgess and freshman Jordan Francis were first team honorees, while Cargill, freshman Abby Irwin and sophomoreGrace Bodron made the second team.

“The women were so close today,” Stanford said at the end of the USA South meet. “Losing by three in cross country can be a bit of a heart-breaker but honestly we have gained so much ground on Meredith in the past year it is an amazing finish for our ladies. We have had our ups and downs this season with losing two and having some injuries so what the girls accomplished today was amazing.”

At the NCAA South/Southeast Region meet, Covenant was without Burgess who was injured. Even without Burgess, the Scots placed 18th of 29 and had five runners set personal records.

Women’s Award Winners:

USA South Runner of the WeekBeth Burgess – 3 times (Sept. 1, Sept. 8, Sept. 15)Ruthie Cargill – (Sept. 29)

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to:
