Head Coach8th Season

Long Beach State, 1978

Tom Milich recently finished his eighth season as head coach of the Cal Poly swimming and diving program.

Since the 2006-07 season, Milich has guided the development of swim-mers who have broken all 28 school records in individual events (often sev-eral times over), as well as relay teams that have established program records at every distance.

He has sent swimmers to the NCAA Championships in four of the past five years, saw two divers advance to the NCAA Zone E Qualifying Meet last season and has coached 19 individual conference champions while with the Mustangs.

The program’s student-athletes have earned conference all-academic honors 88 times during his tenure (in-cluding 14 this past winter). Addition-ally, among men and women, the team had a 100-percent graduation success rate within the cycle observed from 2006 through 2012, as well as a perfect Academic Progress Rate score (1,000 out of a possible 1,000) in 2011-12.

Also on Milich’s watch, the program saw a renovation of its primary facility, Anderson Aquatic Center, in Septem-ber 2009. Featuring eight 50-meter lanes and eighteen 25-yard lanes, as well as an accompanying 15-by-30-foot

(all-shallow) therapy pool, the Myrtha-built venue serves as a state-of-the-art location ideally suited for year-round training.

The upcoming 2014-15 season will be the Cal Poly men’s team’s fifth year competing in the Pac-12 Conference, as well as the women’s program’s fifth year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

To close the 2013-14 season, Mus-tang sophomore Sonny Fierro earned All-America honorable mention status in the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle, fin-ishing 15th at the NCAA Champion-ships hosted by Texas, with a time of 14 minutes, 56.01 seconds. He scored two points to put Cal Poly a half-point ahead of Georgia Tech.

Four other Mustangs also put their names on the initial entry list for the meet, while a fifth also had a qualifying time.

At the end of the previous year, Cal Poly senior Rachel O’Brien also made it to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 18th in the 200 but-terfly in Indianapolis.

In the program’s final season in the Big West, Milich coached the Mustangs to third-place finishes on both the men’s and women’s sides at the conference championships, the highest-ever for

the school.Also in 2009-10, Cal Poly’s Peter

Kline qualified for the NCAA Cham-pionships held at Ohio State in three events, a feat he would repeat as a senior in 2010-11 at Minnesota. (In the latter year, Kline was second in the 400 individual medley at the Pac-10 finals, a finish that Fierro would match in his premier race at the Pac-12 meet a sea-son ago.)

Altogether, Milich is a 12-time recipi-ent of the ASCA Coach of Excellence award, including most recently in De-cember 2010.

For 16 years before he arrived at Cal Poly, Milich served as the Aquatics Di-rector for the Clovis Swim Club. During that time, he coached five swimmers who went on to represent the U.S. in international competition, while sev-en ultimately competed at the NCAA Championships.

From 1989 to 1992, Milich was the head men’s water polo coach at Fresno State. During that time, he was also an NCAA representative for U.S. Water Polo and served on the NCAA regional advisory committee.

In 1988, Milich was an assistant coach for the U.S.’ silver medal-win-ning Olympic men’s water polo team. He was also a staff member for the 1991 gold medal-winning World Cham-pionships squad and the silver-winning team at the Pan American Games.

Prior to his collegiate and interna-tional experience, Milich coached 61 All-Americans at the high school level, including future Olympians Janet Ev-ans, John Moffet and John Mykkanen. During that time, he was honored with the California Swimming Coach of the Year award in 1987 while at El Dorado High School.

Milich graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in biology in 1978, and went on to earn his teaching cre-dential in 1980. He played water polo for the 49ers.

He currently lives in Arroyo Grande with his wife and two daughters.

Phil Yoshida recently finished his 13th season as an assistant coach for the Mus-tangs.

Yoshida was a standout swimmer at Cal Poly from 1999 through 2001 while earning his degree in biological sciences. He spe-cialized in the breaststroke and individual medley. During the two years he swam for the Mustangs, Yoshida had top team finish-es in the 200 breaststroke, the 200 IM and the 400 IM.

Yoshida also placed in the top eight at the Big West Championships twice in the 200

breast and 400 IM. He also earned confer-ence swimmer of the week honors during the 2000-01 season.

From 2001 to 2007, Yoshida worked in the fruit science department at Cal Poly, manag-ing the citrus, avocado and deciduous or-chards on campus. He now enjoys growing fruit trees in his backyard as a hobby.

Since 2007, he has coached at the San Luis Obispo Swim Club. He coaches ath-letes of all ages and has led several to the national level while preparing them for col-legiate success at various universities.

In her first year coaching at Cal Poly, Eri-ca Stricker helped two divers advance to the NCAA Zone E Championships.

Sami McIntyre and Meaghan O’Meara represented the Mustangs at the Air Force Academy’s Cadet Natatorium in Colorado Springs, as the duo of seniors competed in both the 1-meter and 3-meter.

Prior to coming to Cal Poly, Stricker spent two years coaching for the Dos Rios Divers club in Folsom, where she guided two stu-dents who went on to compete at the Divi-sion I level.

During her collegiate career at UC Davis, Stricker also coached for the Blue Diamond

Divers club and gained experience instruct-ing at a camp held by former longtime Ag-gies coach Karla Helder in Buffalo, N.Y.

Starting as a walk-on for the Aggies, Stricker earned a scholarship with the program as a senior. Continuing her ac-complishments during her final season at UC Davis, Stricker set a low-board school record (at 265.80) and qualified for the Zone Championships. As a junior, she finished third on both the 1-m and 3-m boards at the Big West Conference Championships.

Stricker graduated with a degree in exer-cise biology in 2011 as part of the school’s first class of Division I student-athletes.

Anderson Aquatic centerNamed in honor of Dick Anderson, the head coach at Cal Poly from 1947-48 to 1976-77, Anderson Aquatic Center opened in 2009.

The Myrtha-built pool, which can use eight 50-meter lanes and eighteen 25-yard lanes, contains non-porous stainless steel on the sides and concrete topped with polyvinyl liner on the bottom.

Thanks to its drain-off system, the water stays flat.

AAC also includes a 15-by-30-foot therapy pool, which is always kept at 85 degrees.

Anderson Aquatic Center has a deepest point of 13 feet and holds 800,000 gallons.

“Our advocates made this happen — a testament to the value of private support and what it means for our students,” former Athletics Director Alison Cone said at the time of the inauguration of the facility (a pentathlon exhibition versus Cal) in 2009. “We are forever in their debt.”

Dick Anderson was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991. He passed away in 2006.

The UniversityOn Jan. 28, 2014, Kennedy Library (pictured above) became the first university library in the state to receive the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.

For eight years in a row, students have voted the five-story library (which — at 208,433 square feet — is the largest building on campus) as the best location to study.

Named after former university president Robert E. Kennedy, it features a variety of 24-hour study spaces, labs and collaboration rooms.

Swimming and Diving

Note: All event distances listed in the following pages are in yards unless specifically noted to be in meters.

Cal Poly initially competed at the Division I level through the 1962-63 season. The program was then classified in the College Division from 1963-64 through 1972-73; during this time, however, teams were able to also compete against Division I.

From 1973-74 through 1993-94, the Mustangs swam and dove in Di-vision II, before becoming Division I again in 1994-95.

Cal Poly joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association for swimming and diving in 1946-47, becoming the conference’s sixth member.

With the exception of a five-year hiatus from 1979-80 through 1983-84, when the program com-peted as an independent, the Mus-tangs stayed in the CCAA until transitioning to the Big West Con-ference in 1994-95.

The team then moved up to the Pac-12 in 2010-11.

The first woman to swim for Cal Poly was Laurie Morgan, in 1973-74.

On a team basis, Cal Poly’s women’s squad first competed at the intercollegiate level in 1977-78, as a member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women

(as the NCAA didn’t hold a women’s national championships meet until 1981-82).

The Mustangs were at first in the AIAW’s Large College Division (the contemporary equivalent to Division I of the NCAA) before mov-ing to its Division II affiliation in 1979-80.

The women’s program first com-peted in the Southern California Athletic Association until 1984-85, when it moved to the CCAA.

The team then joined the Big West in 1994-95 before moving to the Mountain Pacific Sports Fed-eration in 2010-11.

University Archives, California Polytechnic State UniversityBefore Mott Pool was opened in 1968, the Mustangs held meets in the natatorium on campus (currently Building 46).

Jack Adam (at right) was Cal Po-ly’s first swimmer to earn All-America honors for three years in a row, as he placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships at the Division I level from 1959-60 through 1961-62 in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

(Freshmen were not allowed to com-pete at the time, hence why he didn’t go in ’58-59.)

As a sophomore, he was 10th (at 18:30.2), before finishing ninth (18:00.1) as a junior and seventh as a senior (17:54.3).

He also set school and California Collegiate Athletic Association records in the 220 free (2:10.3) and 440 free (4:32.8).

University Archives, California Polytechnic State UniversityThe 30-year tenure of Dick Anderson (back right, in white, shown in 1963) was

the longest of any Cal Poly head coach in school history, regardless of the sport.

University Archives, California Polytechnic State UniversityIn 1978-79, Heather Davis be-

came the first All-American in any women’s sport at Cal Poly.

Her 100 breaststroke school re-cord of 1:04.55 stood for 31 years (an all-time program record in any event, for either men or women).

Davis went on to qualify for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter breast by winning the event at that year’s Santa Clara In-vitational, in 1:14.4.

University Archives, California Polytechnic State UniversityThe first woman to swim for Cal Poly — and in the California Collegiate Athletic

Association in general — was Laurie Morgan, in 1973-74. After a youth career in which she helped set three American records in relays

within the 15-17 age group, Morgan became the Mustangs’ top 1,000-yard free-styler (including men) as a freshman. She earned her first win in the event at a dual meet versus UC Riverside on Jan. 26, 1974, in 10 minutes, 51 seconds.

Pictured above in the Mustang Daily, Morgan also competed against men at the CCAA finals that season, coming in 14th place in the 200 free, with a prelims time of 1:56.81 (which ranked ahead of six men’s times). She then advanced to the women’s AAU indoor national meet in Dallas.

Morgan laid the foundation for the 1978-79 Mustangs, who won the Southern California Athletic Association title to become the first women’s team in any sport to win a conference championship at Cal Poly.

On May 16, 2008 at the Santa Clara International Invitational in the George Haines Swim Center, Mus-tang freshman Peter Kline swam in the same 400-me-ter individual medley prelims heat as Michael Phelps.

Kline finished third, at 4:30.37, which qualified for that summer’s Olympic Tri-als.

As a senior, Kline finished second at the Pac-10 Con-ference Championships in the 400-yard IM, at 3:45.91.

Rachel O’Brien

Image from KSBY.comAs a senior for the Mustangs in 2012-13, Rachel O’Brien

finished 18th in the 200 fly at the NCAA Championships in IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, at 1:56.78, breaking her own school record.

She also set the program record in the 100 fly earlier in the season, at 53.08.

At East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, O’Brien

was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion in both races, and she set an all-time meet record at the 200 distance.

Her 100 conference title came in closer fashion — nine-hundredths ahead of the meet record-holder, Andrea Ward of UC Santa Barbara.

Pictured at left from a feature by KSBY TV, O’Brien talks with head coach Tom Milich before a practice leading up to her trip to the national championships.
