We had another exciting year. The biggest news was that we found a new home in Reading. In May 2015, Easter Seals moved from Liggett Avenue in West Reading to 90 George Street in Muhlenberg Township.

The opportunity presented itself when the Berks Community Health Center approached Easter Seals to see if they might use some of our space on Liggett Avenue to provide primary health care to nearby neighbors who lacked these services in the local area. As we explored this possibility together, it soon became clear that BCHC could use the whole building to do this vital work. The Reading Housing Authority agreed to purchase the building, renovate it, and create a state of the art medical facility for BCHC.

Easter Seals found a new building on George Street that needed some renovations of its own. Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of support, we were able to get the building ready in an incredibly short time frame, and at tremendous savings. We moved in May, and are thrilled with our new home.

If there’s one thing we know well, it’s that Easter Seals is only successful because the community believes in what we do, and is as committed to the families we serve as we are. Special thanks to Dolan Construction, Lowes, Ethosource, Operating Engineers Local 542 and Ironworkers Local 420, Wilson Eshbach, the Berks United Way, the Berks Community Foundation, Colonial Oaks Foundation, M&T Bank, Easter Seals staff and volunteers (unwitting family members – you know who you are), and many others who tirelessly gave of their time, service and capital.

Stay in touch with us on Facebook and our website – we are doing exciting things. From screening young kids for developmental delays to helping teens transition from high school to life after graduation, and everything in between, we are helping make a difference in the lives of people living with disabilities, and their families, here in our community.

Thank you for being a part of Easter Seals.

Sincerely,

Nancy Knoebel Elaine Stanko President & CEO Board Chair

Service ListEARLY INTERVENTION: For children birth to age 3 with developmental delays. Services are provided to families – at no cost – by a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist and/or special education teacher, depending on each child’s needs. The services are provided wherever each child spends his or her day – at home, at child care, at a relative’s house – and provide families with the knowledge and resources they need to make an ongoing difference in their child’s life. Early Intervention provides services at the time they do the most good – early in a child’s life when fastest development occurs. The benefits of this evidenced-based program are well documented – kids that receive Early Intervention need fewer supports (and often none) by the time they get to school.

MAKE THE FIRST FIVE COUNT: A free developmental screening for children birth through age 5 helps to identify developmental delays. If concerns are detected, families are referred to the appropriate local resources for next steps, which may include a full developmental evaluation and if deemed needed, the provision of critical developmental therapeutic and educational services. Concerned or simply curious, parents can screen their child as often as they want, and monitor their child’s developmental progress.

OUTPATIENT THERAPY: Easter Seals offers outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy for children and young adults at our location in Reading. We work on the goals that matter to the kids we serve, and their families. Some goals are very practical, like helping kids transfer from a wheelchair to the car. Others reflect the essence of what it means to be a kid – like learning to ride a bike or developing the social skills to make new friends. Easter Seals also helps families borrow, find and buy the special equipment they need, such as wheelchairs and adapted seating.

SPECIALTY CLINICS: Specialists from Berks County and the Philadelphia area come to Easter Seals at our location in Reading to provide free care to children who need these services. Clinics include orthopedics, neurology, and feeding. In addition, two different orthotic specialists provide services at Easter Seals where they make custom orthotic braces for kids of all ages.

PRESCHOOL: Our innovative program is held at the Jewish Community Center in Allentown. Children participate in typical preschool activities, and receive therapy during their school day – often right in the classroom. Each week, Easter Seals preschool students spend time in a JCC kindergarten class. This provides an opportunity for kids living with and without disabilities to get to know each other and learn together.

Program ListCAMPING AND RECREATION: All of our camping and recreation programs are designed to provide a respite for families and fun for kids. We get kids out into the community where they can have new experiences and learn new skills, while spending time with friends. Our exceptional staff is skilled at ensuring that everyone succeeds. Programs include:

CAMP GROWING GREEN: A residential camping experience for children and adults with disabilities and special needs held on the campus of the Pocono Environmental Education Center each summer. Campers participate in many environmentally focused activities such as organic gardening and pond ecology and typical camp activities too. This program is designed to help campers develop independent living and vocational skills and provides important respite for families.

CAMP LILY: Two day camps, one in Reading and one in Allentown, provide fun-filled summer days to kids with disabilities from age 8 through young adults. Campers swim, play sports, go on field trips, and more. This summer day program offers families the peace of mind that comes from having a high-quality program where children with special needs are well cared for, spend time with friends, learn new things and have fun!

HANG TIME AND FIT CLUB: These evening recreation programs carry over the fun of camp throughout the year. In Reading and Bethlehem, tweens, teens and young adults meet up weekly from fall through spring. Whether it’s a dance party, movie night or bowling, the kids always have a good time being together, making new friends, enjoying old activity favorites and trying new ones.

SATURDAY RESPITE: Kids attend our respite programs in Reading and Allentown fall through spring, and can even bring their siblings. These 6-hour days offer kids a day with friends, filled with fun activities, and provides their families with some time they can plan around to recharge their batteries or take care of other obligations.

LEAP prepares teens and young adults ages 13 to 22 years old for life after high school. Participants explore career options through volunteering, visits to employers, resume development, interviewing skills and development of peer networks. There are opportunities for socialization in the community that include sports, swimming, arts and culture, and various recreational activities. This program assists participants and their families to explore options for employment and socialization before high school graduation.

FISCAL ADMINISTRATION: We provide the administrative support for Northampton and Lehigh Counties FD-FSS (family driven family support services) funding. We process vouchers for families who receive funding through this program, and ensure that they receive prompt reimbursement, and provide the support they need to understand and navigate the program.
