University of Oregon Student Tennis Center

Opened in September 2000, the Student Tennis Center at the University of Oregon was a tremendous step forward in solidifying the presence of Duck Tennis as a major component of the university’s athletic culture.

The $2.1 million facility hosts both the men’s and women’s varsity tennis programs, as well as club tennis, physical education classes and student recreation. The project was the result of a combined effort fundraising effort from Physical Activities and Recreation Services (PARS) Department, the Athletics Department and the efforts of former Oregon men’s tennis coach Chris Russell and former women’s coach Jack Griffin.

The entire facility received a new playing surface and improved light-ing prior to the 2008-2009 season.

On Nov. 9, 2013, the indoor center court on the north side of the Student Tennis Center was annointed the Alex Rovello Court in honor of former men’s tennis player Alex Rovello. Rovello passed away fol-lowing his junior season in a diving accident.

“It is very important to honor the legacy of Alex Rovello and to make sure that it lives on,” said head men’s tennis coach Nils Schyllander.Rovello posted a career 60 wins in singles play and notched 53 doubles victories in three season at UO.

The women of Oregon went 11-5 last year at home, the most wins at home since the Ducks went 9-2 during the 2008-09 campaign. In 2011-12, the Ducks won seven out of their final eight home matches, including a pair of Pac-12 wins over 43rd-ranked Utah, 4-3, April 6, 2012 and Colorado, 7-0, on April 7, 2012.

The Ducks are 96-52 in matches played at the Oregon Student Tennis Center since its inaugural season (2000-01). In 2009, Oregon put to-gether a 9-2 home season. In 2004, the Oregon women’s squad were 8-2 at home. That same year, the Ducks defeated New mexico in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the second round before falling to conference-rival Washington, 4-3, to end the season.

Daria Panova2003 All-American (Singles, Doubles)2004 All-American (Singles)

Daria Panova is Oregon’s all-time career leader in singles victories, posting a 94-50 (.653) record from 2001-05. She was a member of two Oregon NCAA Tournament teams (2002, 2004) and helped the Ducks advance to the second round in both of those years. Panova set the school’s single-season record for most singles wins in 2003, going 32-15 (.680). As a junior in 2004, she matched her 2003 mark, finishing the season 32-14 (.695). Panova also went 18-12 with doubles partner Courtney Nagle in 2003. Panova and Nagle’s 32-25 doubles mark between 2002-04 ranks third in school history.

Panova was the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament Individual Champion and advanced to the third round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament in singles play and to the quarterfinals in doubles (with Nagle). She was a first team All-Pac-10 selection and earned All- American honors as both a singles and doubles player in 2003. Panova garnered first team All-Pac-10 honors and All-American accolades in singles during the 2004 season but was defeated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. As a senior in 2005, Panova was named second team All-Pac-10 and went 23-12 with doubles partner Dominika Dieskova, which ranks second in Oregon tennis history.

Courtney Nagle2003 All-American (Doubles)

Courtney Nagle won 65 singles matches from 2000-04 and ranks fourth all-time in career singles victories. She won 32 doubles matches with fellow All-American Daria Panova from 2002-04, which ranks third all-time in Or-egon history. Her 18-12 mark with Panova in 2003 ranks ninth in school history.

Nagle helped the University of Oregon to two of its three alltime NCAA Tournament team victories as a sophomore in 2002 and senior in 2004. Individually, Nagle advanced to the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament and teamed with Panova to advance to the quarterfinals in doubles play the same year. She earned All-American ac-colades in doubles for her efforts during the 2003 NCAA Tournament.

Nagle won the University of Oregon’s “Most Improved Player” award after her freshman and junior seasons in 2001 and 2003, respectively.

Rob MullensDirector of AthleticsFourth YearUniversity of West VirginiaB.A., M.A.

Rob Mullens has presided over one of the most successful eras in the University of Oregon’s history with Duck student-athletes setting milestone records both on the field and in the classroom. He has guided Oregon

to the top 15 nationally in the Directors’ Cup, a national assessment of an athletic department’s overall achievements. At the same time, Mullens has improved the Ducks’ academic standards to where the University now averages more than 100 academic all-conference selections annually. And just as important as the athletic and academic success, Oregon’s philosophy of fiscal efficiency during Mullens’ tenure has been recognized nationwide. The University is one of only a handful of institutions nationwide that is self-sufficient as the Oregon brand continues to grow. Those three pillars – academic excellence, broad-based competitive excellence and fiscal efficiency – comprise the foundation of Mullens’ core beliefs as he oversees nearly 500 student-athletes and a budget of nearly $98 million. Yet Mullens himself would tell you that it is the talented student-athletes, coaches and staff at the University of Oregon that are the department’s most valuable assets. Mullens was named the University’s 12th director of intercollegiate athletics on July 15, 2010, after arriving from the University of Kentucky, where he served as deputy director of athletics and managed day-to-day operations for Kentucky’s 22-sport athletics department, with an annual operating budget of $79 million. Since Mullens’ arrival in Eugene, the Duck football team has claimed two conference championships in four seasons, including the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game title, while becoming the only school in the country to appear in a fourth consecutive BCS bowl game following the 2012 regular season. After a Rose Bowl victory in the 2012 Granddaddy of Them All, Oregon posted a second straight BCS bowl win by downing Kansas State in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl and came back the next season with a dominating performance against Texas in Alamo Bowl. Spurred by national championships in men’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field, as well as top three national finishes by softball and women’s outdoor track and field in 2013-14, the Ducks registered a school-record 943 points in the Directors’ Cup to place 15th overall and rank among the top 25 for a fifth time in six years. In the history of the Directors’ Cup, Oregon is the only program with 18 or fewer NCAA sports to place among the top 15 nationally, a feat the Ducks have done three times. Off the field, Mullens saw three-quarters of UO student-athletes earn degrees, and three garner Capitol One Academic All-America awards. All told, more than 100 student-athletes won academic all-conference awards. He also arrived as the Ducks opened their spectacular Matthew Knight Arena, which plays host to the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, women’s volleyball and acrobatics and tumbling, in addition to benefitting the entire Eugene-Springfield communities as a state-of-the-art venue for concerts, cultural forums and world-class entertainment. Mullens’ background is in accounting and auditing, and he promoted sound fiscal management and self-sufficiency at the University of Kentucky. During his total of eight years at Kentucky, the athletic department’s operating budget expanded by nearly 70 percent. Fundraising for the department hit record levels each of the past seven years prior to his departure. Prior to being named deputy director of athletics at Kentucky in 2006, Mullens began as the university’s executive associate director of athletics in 2002. He served at the University of Maryland from 1996 to 2002, starting as assistant director of athletics for business and ultimately as executive senior associate director of athletics and chief of staff. The West Virginia native was senior athletics business manager at the University of Miami (Fla.) from 1994 to 1996, and prior to that he was an accountant/auditor at Ernst & Young in Raleigh, N.C. The 45-year-old Mullens earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in sport management from West Virginia University in 1991 and 1993, respectively. He and his wife, Jane, have two sons - Cooper and Tanner.
