After 25 years at the helm of the NM State tennis programs, longtime head coach Don Ball retired following the completion of his teams’ schedules. A staple of Aggie Athletics, he had served as the head coach of the NM State

men’s and women’s tennis teams since arriving in Las Cruces during the fall of 1985. Ball’s tenure stands as the longest for a head coach in any sport in New Mexico State history.

Ball came to New Mexico State in the fall of 1985 after serving as the head ten-nis professional at the El Paso Tennis Club in El Paso, Texas. Ball coached 1,132 dual matches in his illustrious career and won nearly half of his matches with 562 combined victories directing the Aggie tennis teams. Under Ball’s guidance,

the men’s squads compiled a 274-280 (.495) record with a pair of NCAA appearances while the women’s teams recorded a 288-289-1 (.498)

ledger under Ball’s guidance. Altogether, Ball’s Aggie tennis teams finished their seasons with a .500 record or better

on 28 occasions – 14 times on the men’s side and an equal number with the women’s program.

In both 2000 and 1997, his men’s teams earned berths to the NCAA tournament.

On May 12, 2009, Ball was named the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Coach of the Year for guiding the men’s team into the national rankings for the first time since 2004. That was his fourth coach of the year honor, joining his selec-tions as the 1999 Big West Coach of the Year (men), the 1999 Southern USPTA Coach of the Year (men) and the 1988 High Country Ath-letic Conference Coach of the Year (women).

Ball has received recognition for his community service efforts over the years. In November 2007 he was giv-en the ITA Southwest Section USTA/ITA Community Service Award.

Head Coach Don Ball

One of his greatest career accomplish-ments has been the development of the NM State Tennis Center, which opened in the spring of 2006. The 12-court complex is one of the pre-mier outdoor facilities in all of college tennis and it is attributed to Ball, who was fundamental in overseeing the de-velopment, construction, maintenance and growth of the tennis center, where he serves as the director.

Before his coaching days began, Ball was an outstanding collegiate tennis player. He began his collegiate career at New Mexico in 1967, where he posted a 28-3 singles record in two years. After the 1968-69 season he transferred to Idaho State where he played his final two seasons. A team captain as a senior in 1971, Ball played at the No. 1 singles position and his team named him the most valuable player. He was the runner-up in No. 1 singles at the Big Sky Con-ference Championships.

After graduating from Idaho State, Ball entered the United States Army where he was a member of the U.S. Army Tennis Clinic Team. In 1974, he was the U.S. Army TRADOC singles and doubles champion. Fol-lowing his discharge from the Army, Ball moved to New Jersey where he became the promoter and director of the $25,000 Allaire Open in 1978, a tournament on the American Express Professional Circuit.

In 1980, Ball became the head instructor at the El Paso Tennis Club. There he coached five nationally

ranked junior players, three sec-tional champions, one national champion and more than 50 sectionally ranked juniors.

Ball’s family has always been heavily involved with the sport of tennis and for all of their family work, the United States Tennis Associa-tion named them the USTA National Family of the Year in 1989.The award was in honor of Don, his father Russell Ball a former NCAA semifinalist at Northwestern, as well as the rest of the Ball family of their efforts in the sport over the years. The award is made annually to the family who in recent years has done the most to promote amateur tennis, primarily on a volunteer basis. All members of the family should participate in some

NM State Tennis CenterThe NM State Tennis Center first opened on Nov. 21, 1987. It featured 20 courts, including two stadium courts and an office building equipped with locker rooms. Over the years the facility gave way to the rigors of normal wear and tear and was subsequently torn down.

A new state-of-the-art Center opened prior to the 2006 spring dual match season and was relocated to its current position just south of Aggie Memorial Stadium. It features 12 post-tension concrete ten-nis courts - known as the finest hard courts in the world - along with arguably the best lighting system of any facility in the Southwest.

In the spring of 2007, construction began on the Center’s new clubhouse. It was completed in early July of the same year. The 3,000- square-foot facility features a classroom, player lounge, locker rooms and offices. The classroom is equipped with desks and computers with internet connections for the student-athletes. The player lounge is an area where the Aggies can relax before and after practices as well as matches. The multi-functional venue is also equipped with a refrigerator and kitchen sink.

In April 2008, New Mexico State displayed its mag-nificent facility to the rest of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) when the Center played host to that year’s WAC Championships. The facility also hosts the yearly Aggie Fall Invitational.

Since the opening of the new tennis center the women’s team has gone 26-22 (.542) while the men’s team has posted an 27-8 (.771) in dual matches at its home facility.

The tennis center serves not only the Aggie tennis teams, but also NM State students, faculty mem-bers and the general public.

“We have one of the best outdoor facilities in

the country and there is no question about that.

Very few schools have the lighting we have and

certainly don’t have the building we have, so we

are really lucky.”

- Legendary former head coach Don Ballon the NM State Tennis Center

Academic Honors and AwardsThe Aggie women’s tennis team has traditionally triumphed in the classroom as well as the court since joining the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in the summer of 2005. Since then NM State players have earned 27 academic All-WAC honors including four in 2010. Over the same time span, the Aggies also boast numerous academic awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) with five all-academic team awards and 24 ITA scholar athlete selections.

“The academic success of our student-athletes is one of my top goals,” said head coach Ivan Fernandez. “By definition, our student-athletes are students first and athletes second. This is why their academic progress and eventual graduation is of great importance to us.

“I give a great deal of the credit for my team’s academic excellence to our amazing athletics academic support staff. They make every effort to ensure that our student-athletes are exceeding the academic expectations of the university and the athletic department. In addition to winning on the tennis court, there is no greater honor than the recognition of my student-athletes for their success off the court.”

“The one thing I try to instill the most in my Aggies is the concept of ‘winning the right way,’” said head coach Ivan Fernandez. “As ath-letes, they train and compete with the ultimate goal of winning on the court as well as in life. But as representatives of NM State and Aggie Athletics, I always encourage that we win with class and respect for our opponents. There is no greater honor than for my student-athletes to be recognized for their success on and off the court. I am extremely proud of my teams’

awards including WAC All-Conference and Player of the Week honors.”
