Grammy-nominated saxophonist Joshua Redman is one of the most esteemed and charismatic artists of his generation. His music can be challenging, provocative, and forward-thinking, but also hard-swinging, melodic, and soulful, with a strong link to the jazz idioms of the 1950s and 60s. He and his band, long-time collaborators Reuben Rogers on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums, demand serious energy and engagement of themselves and their listeners, creating music with a joyous and celebratory spirit. Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin, best known for his 14 years with Bla Fleck & the Flecktones, leads the Mutet, a group that takes its name from the word mutation, reflecting Coffins idea that music must continue to change and mutate in order to grow. Coffin strives to expand himself, his band mates, and listeners with music flavored by his wide musical interests. Drawing from the deep wells of African, New Orleans, Indian, funk, jazz, folk, Gypsy, rock, fusion, Brazilian, and other genres,
Coffin sends shockwaves down peoples spines with his fierce soloing (sometimes on two saxophones at once) and inspiring, memorable compositions. The Mutet, described as ...equal parts Galactic and Dirty Dozen Brass Band by JazzTimes, features Felix Pastorius of the Yellowjackets on bass, Bill Fanning on trumpet, Chris Walters on keyboards, and very special guest Roy Futureman Wooten of the Flecktones on drums.

Not much in jazz combines the churchy moan and shaking hip like a Hammond B-3 organ, and Joey DeFrancesco is one of its modern masters. Playing with Hank Mobley and Philly Joe Jones at just 10 years old, and joining Miles Daviss band at 17, DeFrancesco has had a storied career that has seen him travel the world with some of the greatest
musicians of all-time, leading to the resurgence of the organ in jazz today. Both a top-flight organist and an accomplished trumpeter, he has won a raft of awards from both jazz critics and listeners alike, and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. DeFrancesco embellishes his swingin, old-school organ with his own ferocious sound.

The Bad Plus has spent over 15 years redefining what a piano-bass-drums trio can and should be. Theyve reached audiences of all demographic stripes with genre-defying music that is at once complex, heartfelt, humorous, and instantly engaging. Featuring bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King, The Bad Plus is a leaderless trio with a committed belief in what theyve dubbed avant-garde populism the idea that serious music can be as engaging and accessible as it is forward-thinking and provocative.

More recently, Green has taken the stage and recorded with artists ranging from Christian McBride to Diana Krall. A successful bandleader himself for over 20 years, Green is perhaps the most exciting, hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from the Jazz Messengers. Regina Carters Southern Comfort features a lush array of tunes based on folk, blues, and jazz, all focused on her familys history through a modern lens. For this project, Carter heavily researched field recordings of folklorists like Alan Lomax and John Work III at the Library of Congress to discover the music that her paternal grandfather, who
worked as a coal miner in Alabama, would have heard in the Deep South during the first half of the 20th century. Inspired by those sounds, Carter deftly opens up marches, dirges, and ballads to her improvisatory style with a tone that is lighter here than her usual dark amber hue, but with playing that is just as captivating as ever.
Regina Carter creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring...taking the listener into the future of jazz.

Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician. An authentic guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, his arrangements of songs reveal an R&B background as well as his affinity for funk and gospel. With a theatrical stage presence that wins over audiences, and a dynamic range and hard-grooving sound that blows their minds, Dr. Lonnie Smith is the hippest Hammond B-3 organist on the scene today.
With a velvety West African Frenchaccented baritone, guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke exudes a seductive effortlessness. He can play fast and loud, but its nearly impossible to imagine him ever fretting over a difficult passage. His music smolders with controlled intensity; clicking and whistling with his vocals and tapping and scratching his guitar, all while carefully orchestrating loops and harmonizing effects. Praised by his mentor Herbie Hancock as a musical painter, Loueke combines harmonic complexity, soaring melody, and a deep knowledge of African folk forms, with extended guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative sound never before heard.
This rare pairing combines the music of West Africa with African American music and jazz in unexpected and exciting ways.

Jeremy Davenport infuses his unique style of storytelling with his original lyrics and music, creating not only a modern edge, but also a feeling reminiscent of the time when jazz was at its peak of popularity.
A St. Louis native, Davenport was born into a family of musicians. His mother has been a music educator for 50 years and his father recently retired, after 40 years, from the St. Louis Symphony. From a young age,
Davenport studied and played with members and guests of the Symphony, which included an early introduction to jazz great Wynton Marsalis. He eventually went on to play with Harry Connick, Jr.s big band for six years.
Davenport now tours the world, plays regularly in New Orleans, and returns home annually for this Thanksgiving tradition at Jazz at the Bistro.

NEA Jazz Master, renowned Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, and Tony Award nominee, Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. Leader of one of the finest jazz quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Marsalis and his Quartet of musical friends released Four MFs Playin Tunes. On this most current album, the song takes center
stage, with the band members bringing their considerable musical expertise to bear, as they focus on each tune as an important musical entity unto itself and not merely a vehicle for showcasing individual talent. Please join us for an astounding performance of one of the most innovative and forward-thinking jazz ensembles around today!

Valentines Day with Erin Bode
The Erin Bode Group creates music forged from the Americana of its members midwestern roots, infused with jazz grooves, and made magic by Bodes bell-like voice. Sophisticated arrangements and attention to phrasing, both vocal and instrumental, further distinguish the bands fresh sound. Bode consistently wins over audiences with her sweet personality and sincere performances, the perfect combination to celebrate this romantic holiday.
Byron Stripling
A spectacular trumpeter with a wide range, a beautiful tone, and the ability to blend together many influences into his own style, Byron Stripling is an extroverted performer who brings the audience into his music. The happiness that he exudes through his trumpet, his vocals, and his words is reminiscent of Louis Armstrong, yet very much his own.
A powerful trumpeter, at ease with the most complicated and detailed bebop lines and an open-armed [Louis] Armstrong swagger.

frequently asked questionsDo you have food at the Bistro? Yes, food and drinks are available at all Jazz at the Bistro performances. Guests attending the 7:30 p.m. performances can arrive as early as 6:00 p.m. and sit at their ticketed table. We also serve food and drinks throughout the performance, so even if you arrive just five minutes before the show, you wont go hungry. 9:30 p.m. attendees are seated starting at 9:00 p.m. and can order at that time and throughout the show or arrive early and dine in the Jazz Lounge.
Does a meal come with the price of the ticket? No. Your ticket covers the performance. Dinner and drinks are a separate charge.
Do I have to order food or can I just get drinks? Jazz at the Bistro performances have no minimum, although we recommend you try the food!
Where is the Bistro located? The Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz, home of the Ferring Jazz Bistro, is located at 3536 Washington Avenue (at Grand Avenue), just across from the Fox Theater.
Where can I park? Valet parking is available for all Jazz at the Bistro performances (complimentary for subscribers!). The Grand Center Arts District also has several pay lots available for most shows. There is also on-street parking, with meters running until 7:00 p.m.
Do you have a dress code? No. However, most of our patrons feel most comfortable in business casual attire.
Will I be sitting with other people? Jazz at the Bistro uses family-style seating, so unless you have purchased all of the tickets at a table, there will likely be people joining you.
Can I stay for the second set if I bought a ticket for the first set? While we try to let you stay for the second set at no additional charge as often as possible, there will be times when there is not enough availability to do so. An announcement will be made after the first set to let you know whether you can stay for free or with the purchase of a discounted or full-priced ticket.
Are there any age restrictions? No. The Ferring Jazz Bistro is an all-ages venue.
Can I take pictures? You may take non-flash photos for most performances. However, please be mindful of the light and noise that comes from your camera as to not disturb the people around you.
How long are the performances? Performances last approximately 70 minutes.
What time can I get there? Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for 7:30 p.m. performances, and at 9:00 p.m. for 9:30 p.m. sets. Second set guests are welcome to arrive at the Jazz Lounge before 9:00 p.m.
Can I get a refund if I cant come to a show? Jazz at the Bistro tickets are non-refundable unless a show is cancelled. Pending availability, you can exchange tickets for a different performance night with the same artist for a fee of $5 per ticket (this exchange privilege is complimentary for subscribers).

Jazz St. Louis engages these artists for an entire week, during which they visit area schools and conduct master classes and clinics for middle and high school musicians, allowing for more hands-on coaching. At the elementary level, residency artists perform in-school, introducing many
young people to jazz for the first time while teaching them about the great art form. These artists cap off their week in St. Louis with either performances on the Jazz at the Bistro stage or free community concerts held at various venues throughout the area.
