meeting

13. Director of Athletics - Ken Kavanagh o NCAA Governance Changes

Autonomy group of the 5 biggest FB conferences (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC) – They now can make their own rules on certain matters (other schools can also follow suit). However, they can’t unilaterally make changes to access to NCAA Tournaments and the NCAA revenue stream tied to MBB Championship that significantly effects FGCU’s and others budgets, number of scholarships or amount of games allowed, etc.

o A-Sun Tournaments/NKU Will give an update at the next Eagles Council meeting (NKU is now eligible to

participate in all A-Sun Tourneys – yet, still not eligible for NCAAs for two more years) o Capital Campaign

Looking to raise $12 million. $6 Million would be to enhance Alico Arena – Build out the Southeast side of the arena to expand the training room, add a student-athlete weight room, and larger offices on the second floor for basketball, that would leave more room for others. The other $6 million would go toward operating expenses (recruiting, equipment & supplies, team travel, etc.), salaries and facility improvements (i.e., new scoreboards for baseball, softball, and possibly soccer, video scoreboard for Alico Arena, improve the tennis facilities, and swimming & diving locker rooms, etc.)

Page 4: 2014-15 Eagles Council Meeting Saturday, August …...2015/08/13  · 2014-15 Eagles Council Meeting Saturday, August 1 6, 2014 - 1:00 PM - Alico Hospitality Suite Administrators in

o Student-Athlete Surveys Very much appreciate all who have taken the time to provide this valuable annual

feedback. You should feel confident enough to put your name on your survey and trust that the administration will handle the surveys properly. If we don’t the system is doomed for failure anyway.

o Budgets Thanks to the positive “Dunk City” spin-off, our department now has $1 million more

than it had last year. The new resources are going towards scholarships (all men’s teams now at NCAA limits and every women’s team was increased), recruiting, team travel, preseason/recess meals, equipment, etc. We all should be thankful every time Alico Arena is full for both the great home court advantage/atmosphere, as well as the ticket revenue and demand it has placed on season tickets that requires new folks to have to join the Eagles Club, which produces even more revenue for ALL our teams.

o Banners & Slogans – we will continue to look to build upon our growing traditions. This includes working on truncating the FGCU Fight Song, as well as utilizing WingsUp, Soaring Expectations, etc. in both additional signage, on t-shirts, etc. Years from now, we can all look proudly back upon leaving a legacy off successes in the classroom, in your playing venues, greater SW Florida community, and in commencing lasting traditions for future generations of the Green & Blue!

o Night @ Nest – Friday, December 5th Please start thinking about auction items – all net proceeds teams generate goes to

their sport’s gift account. Ask family and friends of the program for possible autographed memorabilia, tickets, vacation properties, golf foursomes, et al

o E-Calendar E-calendar is available to download in lieu of schedule cards (except for hoops) There will still be schedule magnets for home games

your assigned sports information person if there are any typos and/or missing information

There are several opportunities around the holiday season If you have certain dates your team would like to volunteer let me know and

we can work on creating team service project o 7th Annual Hunger Walk – January 17, 2015 @ 8:00 AM @ Miramar Outlets

Benefits FGCU’s Campus Food Pantry Ken will send out a registration link via email when we get closer to the event

8. Director of Athletics - Ken Kavanagh

o Alico Hospitality Suite – Pictures in the Hospitality Suite have been updated. All teams will be represented. Pictures are meant to capture high-energy moments, a particular star student-athlete, or a signature moment. We will be working on incorporating buzz phrases, such as #WingsUp, #WeAreFGCU, #SoaringExpectations throughout all our Athletics Facilities

o Hall of Fame – Think it’s important to wait 10 years after a student-athlete has completed their FGCU career to allow the individuals to have greater appreciation of the moment. Chris Sale will be in our first Hall of Fame Class, which should occur in 2020.

o Congrats to all fall sports! We continue to collectively raise the bar. We now have a total of 40 championships, 30 conference championships, and 10 NCAA team bids, plus 6 team individual representations. This is an outstanding accomplishment, especially since we are not at full scholarships yet for many of our teams. Each success helps us recruit student-athletes and more donors.

o Fall Sports Student-Athlete Surveys – please make sure to fill out the surveys honestly (i.e., don’t put all 5s and please provide warranted positive comments, as well as constructive remarks for anything deemed below a 3). This helps provide our department feedback and ways in which we can improve certain aspects of our department. All surveys are kept confidential. KP and Lindsey will work on a date for the surveys to be returned. Important that seniors take the Senior Survey. If completed beforehand, please return the surveys to either Lindsey or KP

9. Future Eagles Council Meeting Dates – Mark your calendars now! All meetings will take place in the Alico Arena Hospitality Suite
