Why is academic writing rhetorical?

12noon-12.30pmLecture Theatre 029, ClockTower, 22 Princes Street, City Campus.

Dr Barry White, Student Learning (Tā te Äkonga)

If one believes that evidence and logic alone are sufficient to persuade an audience of academic researchers to accept a particular argument, academic writing might be considered simply a process of information transmitting and learning how to do it, merely the mechanical application of a set of rules. Is this, however, the case and what are the implications for academic writing if it is not?
