Just one starting position player and a handful of pitch-ers return from last year’s team, but second-year coach Bryan Lewallyn has bolstered the roster with a number of key transfers, and the Sand Shark enter the season ranked 21st in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Top 25 and picked to finish third in The Sun Confer-ence after a runner-up finish a

year ago. There are enormous shoes

to fill, most notably those left by Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year Michael Heesch, who was an eighth-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs and will begin his second season in the minors this spring. USCB also said goodbye to six “original Sand Sharks” — Gabe Torres, Weldon Smith, David O’Neil,

DeShontay Berry, R.J. Neal and Colton Rudd — as well as fellow seniors Matt Barger, Brandon Collins, Dom Hayes, Keenan Ivey, Ty Main, Conald Mansfield, Adam Miller, Dylan Nasiatka, and Keifer Youmans. The returning players and the

corps of newcomers will have the tall task of competing in The Sun Conference, which once again looks to be one of the top league’s in the country with perenial power Embry-Riddle and defending tourna-ment champion St. Thomas looking strong again and Web-ber International and Warner on the rise.

CATCHERThe Sand Sharks don’t return

any players who saw time behind the plate for them last season, but they have more

2013 Season preview

The best season in the brief history of University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Shark base-ball also marked the end of an era, as most

of the team’s initial recruits who helped launch the program in 2009 ended their careers with a school-record 41 wins and USCB’s first trip to the NAIA World Series. The challenge of maintaining that level of success now falls to a team that fea-tures a few familiar faces — and a whole bunch of new ones.

Senior Mitchell Johnson returns after sitting out last season and serving as bullpen coach, and left-handed hitting freshman Nick payne will get plenty of experience, as well. Fresh-man Brandon Joyce also can play the position in a pinch, and freshman Jack Zanine is expected to redshirt.

base. Terry McClinton is pen-ciled in at third base after missing most of last season because of injury, and sophomore Ashly Morris takes over the full-time short-stop job. USC Salkehatchie transfer Ryan Walker swings a great bat and will be in the mix somewhere in the infield or as the designated hitter, and Joyce provides depth at third. Senior david Greene also boasts a big bat and will be in the mix at the corners and as the DH. Freshman Mitchell Stew-art provides depth up the middle, and freshman Char-lie McGinnis is a promising first baseman who is likely to redshirt.

richard Gray ComplexThe Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville, S.C., has been the

home of Sand Shark Baseball since the program’s inception in 2009, and it has provided a significant home-field advantage. Entering the 2013 season, the Sand Sharks are 92-31 at Richard Gray, and they won the naia national Championship Opening round tournament there last may. The complex is located behind the Hardeeville City Hall off Main St.

and features four fields — two for baseball and two for softball.

University of South Carolina BeaufortThe University of South Carolina Beaufort is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the nation. its lineage dates back to the original 1795 charter of Beaufort College.

in 1959, by another official act, the South Caro-lina Legislature created the Beaufort campus of the University of South Carolina on the original site of historic Beaufort College and authorized it to offer the same courses taught at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

In 1994, USCB embarked on a major expansion program. International Paper, a global leader in the paper and packaging industry, donated 80 acres of land to build an additional full-service campus for the university in Bluffton, the region’s fastest grow-ing area. The county government agreed to finance construction of the campus if the university would des-ignate it as a four-year institution of higher learning. When the state approved its new, four-year status, construction began.

In June 2002, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education granted USCB baccalaureate status. In 2004, it was accredited as a Level II bacca-laureate degree-granting university.

Today, South Carolina’s newest four-year university offers baccalaureate degrees, access to USC’s ex-tended Graduate Campus classes, and degrees and a wide variety of continuing-education programs at its two full-service campuses — the Historic Beaufort Campus and the Hilton Head Gateway Campus.
