During 15 years of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate learning, faith and leadership in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts and The College of Christian Leadership, and leading the university to national rankings.
His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning, conviction, integrity, stewardship and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offi ces. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confi dent Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their infl uence in appropriate and eff ective ways to change the world around them. These values lie at the heart of the University’s 2020 Vision strategic plan that sets as its outcome: “By 2020, The University of Mobile will be a nationally recognized voice and transforming infl uence in the revitalization of Christian faith and character in America.”
Dr. Foley held membership on the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Executive Committee and past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc.
Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a Bachelor of Science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator.
The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accounting executive in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. The University of Mobile baseball team heads into the 2013 season with 15 returning players and a new crop of incoming talent, looking to make progress in the always-tough Southern States Athletic Conference.
“It’s nice when you have experienced players in a lot of places, and we have that, but we still need some new guys to step up in key spots,” Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. “We are looking to take that next step to compete in the conference, after seeing what it takes to play at the top level over the past three years.”
One thing a team needs in order to compete for championships is pitching, and the Rams will feature seven returning pitchers along with four newcomers.
Returning pitchers are Shane Ikner, Ryan Hines, Cole Vaughan, Jacob Knowles, Corey Fountain, Blake Matthews and Dustin Pugh. Ikner posted a 2.51 ERA in 24 relief appearances, Hines struck out 54 in 58 innings and was second on the team with fi ve wins, Vaughan picked up three wins, Knowles worked 36.1 innings, Fountain worked 43.2 innings and Pugh and Matthews each worked 1 inning of scoreless relief.
“These guys will be key to our season,” Jacobs said. “Ikner was outstanding in relief last year, and is moving to the rotation this season. Hines has great stuff , and could be one of the top starters in the league if he becomes more consistent. Fountain has gained a lot of experience over three seasons in a variety of roles, while Vaughan and Knowles got some valuable starts in midweek games, and we look for them to challenge for some weekend action this year. Pugh and Matthews give us depth for the pen. We expect Hines, Ikner and Fountain to be our weekend starters.”
New pitchers are 6-1 junior Josh Hollingsworth of Saraland, Ala.; 6-1 junior Jeff rey Price of Walnut Hill, Fla.; 5-10 junior Chase Jordan of Citronelle, Ala.; and 6-1 freshman Charlie Stevenson of DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Hollingsworth fanned 39 and held opponents to a .195 average in 45.1 innings, Price held opponents to a .215 batting average in 61.2 innings at Faulkner State and Jordan last pitched at Meridian CC in 2011, fanning 18 batters in 18.1 innings.
“Hollingsworth has really good stuff , and we expect him to step up and be the closer,” Jacobs said. “Price brings some valuable experience and should fi gure prominently in our staff , while Jordan should provide a boost to our pen. Stevenson is a freshman that we look forward to working with and watching grow and improve.”
Forming the other end of the batter for the Rams will be a group of largely new catchers. Keith Shirah returns after redshirting last year, Travis Bowen returns after playing in 10 games, and they will be joined by newcomers Angelo Bruno and Philip McDuffi e.
“Shirah and Bowen have both had to battle injuries, and we look forward to themgetting healthy and being able to contribute more,” Jacobs said. “Bruno and McDuffi e are both JUCO transfers that can swing the bat and handle the pitching staff behind the plate.”
Backing up the pitchers on the infi eld will be fi ve returners and three newcomers. Justin Beck, Brady King, John Soutullo, Keith Granger and Braxton Hamil are the returners, while Payne Palmer and Neil Hudson are the newcomers.
Hamil hit .294 and posted a .410 on base percentage while leading the team with 19 doubles and 36 RBI as a freshman 1st baseman, Beck has 140 career hits in three seasons and King posted a .283 batting aver-age and 24 runs scored in 99 plate appearances last year. Soutullo posted a .387
on base percentage in 38 games in 2012 and Granger saw action in 17 games.
“Hamil really showed a lot as a freshman, and we expect him to help anchor our lineup and be a run-producing bat, while Beck had a bit of a down year last year, but showed as a freshman that he can be a high-average hitter,” Jacobs said. “Soutullo will be our utility guy, playing in the outfi eld and at second and short, King can really pick it at 3rd and knows how to handle the bat, and Granger provides depth at 1st base.”
Among the returners, Hudson is a South Alabama transfer and Palmer is a freshman.
“Hudson brings a powerful bat to our lineup and Palmer is a complete player, with a good head for the game that can hit for average,” Jacobs said.
In the outfi eld are four newcomers and a pair of returners. Ryan Parazine and Parker Hollinghead are the holdovers, while Jared Brannon returns after redshirting last season, and will be joined by Austin Curtis, Alec Raley and Zack Robinson. Vaughan, Soutullo and Gabriel Granger could also see some time in the outfi eld.
Parazine was second on the team with a .329 batting average last season and led with a .444 on base percentage, while Hollinghead hit .240 in 31 games.
“Parazine was a very consistent hitter last year, and we look for more of the same, while Hollinghead started to come along late after missing time early due to injury,” Jacobs said. “Brannon gives us a top-of-the-order option that can play centerfi eld and Raley has gap power that will cause a lot of teams headaches. Curtis brings a left-handed bat with JUCO experience and Robinson is a freshman from Gautier that we are looking forward to seeing develop.”
Awaiting the team will be a 54-game schedule beginning Friday, Feb. 1 with a 2 p.m. contest against Talladega. Twenty-eight of those games will be played at Jacobs Field. The fi rst three-game SSAC series will be at Lee Feb. 15-16 and the fi rst home SSAC series will see Southern Poly visit Feb. 22-23. regular season Apr. 26-27.
Braxton Hamil returns after earning SSAC Freshman of the Year honors.

The 2012 University of Mobile baseball team fi nished with a 25-25 overall mark and a 15-15 ledger in Southern States Athletic Conference action. The Rams advanced to the SSAC Tournament, but dropped both games against a pair of Top-20 teams in Lee and Auburn-Montgomery.
“The SSAC is easily one of the top conferences in the country, with fi ve teams fi nishing either ranked or receiving votes in the poll, and we are still trying to get to the point where we can compete for the title,” Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. “We just couldn’t seem to get our off ense and pitching synced up.”
Early in the season, the Rams struggled to swing the bats consistently, being held to three runs or less in 10 of the team’s fi rst 14 losses. After splitting with Loyola and taking the series-opener from Talladega, the Rams dropped the next two to the Tornadoes, dropped a pair to rival Spring Hill and were swept by perennial power Lee.
“The season started off okay in the fi rst three games, but after dropping a pair to Talladega things just spiraled out of control a bit,” Jacobs said. “You have to be able to put a loss behind you and move on, and that was a stretch where we couldn’t do that.”
But the Rams did bounce back. Following a split with non-conference foe Thomas University on the road, Mobile went 11-3 over the next 14 contests. That run began with the Rams outscoring Belhaven 11-4 in the fi rst two games of a 3-game set, and then thumping Lyon by a combined margin of 22-6 in a double-header.
UMobile’s pitching staff then held William Carey to nine runs in three games to take two-of-three before going on to sweep Loyola, as the pitching staff again came up big, allowing only fi ve runs in three games.
“That Belhaven series was big for us,” Jacobs said. “They are a very good team and our guys came out and took the fi rst two games and then carried that momentum for a while longer.”
Within that 11-3 stretch was a season-best seven-game winning streak. The fi nal win of that streak came March 20 against Talladega, and the team’s record sat at 15-13, 8-7.
From there, the team went cold again, going 4-9 over the next 13 games, dropping series to Shorter and AUM and getting swept by Faulkner. In four of those losses, the team scored fi ve or more runs.
The Rams then closed out the regular season winning six of seven against Truett-McConnell, Spring Hill and Southern Wesleyan.
“We were streaky all season,” Jacobs said. “Our hitting and pitching would click for a stretch, then one would go into a slump, and then the other. We just couldn’t stay consistent.”
Mobile went into the SSAC Tournament facing a tall test, and came up empty against Lee and AUM, falling 6-11 to the Flames and 4-9 to the Warhawks.
After the season, Braxton Hamil was named SSAC Freshman of the Year, and he was joined on the Gold Glove Team by Justin Beck and Brady King.
“Hamil showed a great eye at the plate and some nice power for a freshman, and could really pick it at fi rst base,” Jacobs said. “King and Beck are a couple of gamers that helped put our defense fi nish 2nd in the NAIA.”
