Suzhou TripStudent Exchange Programme in China

By Caleb Tan of Sec 4F

32 students, together with four teachers, participated in a 9-day exchange programme which brought them around China—to Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai in October 2013. The

objective of the programme is to broaden students’ global outlook and perspective through experiential learning. North Stars spent most of their time learning at the SIP Xinggang School and Jinfan Middle School, where they attended a variety of academic and cultural lessons and interacted with the Chinese students. The students from Jinfan Middle School treated our students to a cultural performance. North Stars were delighted by the warmth and hospitality that was extended to them. North Stars noted in their reflections that they have gained a deeper understanding of the Chinese education system through this trip. The lessons that they have learnt also allowed them to grow holistically. The trip to China would not be complete without visiting the many tourist attractions and historical landmarks. Students were awed by the breath-taking West Lake in Hangzhou and the majestic Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai.

Cultural Immersion Trip to BeijingProgram Penyerapan Budaya di Beijing

By Murnie Rahayu & Nurdiyahnah Ummairah of Sec 4D

‘Jauh perjalanan, luas pandangan’.

Pucuk dicita, ulam mendatang. Kami bukan sekadar dapat meluaskan pandangan sahaja, malah menimba pengalaman di luar jangkauan kami!

Banyak tempat menarik kami lawati seperti Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven dan Confucious Temple.

School Strategic Planning Workshop for 2014By Mr. Cheong Tien Beng (HOD, Science)

CVSS held our fourth annual Strategic Planning

Workshop on 7 and 8 November, 2013. The key objective of the workshop is to develop a shared understanding of the school’s strategic direction through the staff and key stakeholders in the school’s strategic planning process.

Highlights of 2013

Ming Yi sharing a special moment with Mdm. Ong.

A victorious Zhe Hao beaming with pride.

As in the previous year, key stakeholders from the School Advisory Committee, Parent Support Group and student leaders participated in the workshop. Over the two days, the participants engaged in lively discussions to generate and refine strategies to reach the school’s goals. The comments given by the participants were very positive and affirmative of the efforts by the committee, with all participants agreeing that the workshop was engaging and provided them with a better understanding of the school’s systems and processes.

Ming Yi (Sec 4I, 2013) who achieved eight distinctions in the O-Level examinations was motivated by his leadership positions as the Captain of the school’s badminton team and as the Head of the Student Council Board. His roles in the school helped him to build up his confidence and to always be ready for challenges. Ming Yi is currently pursuing his Diploma in International Business at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Zhe Hao (Sec 4D, 2013) is a well-rounded achiever who attained five distinctions in the GCE N-Level Examination. His achievements in Boys’ Brigade (BB) and role as an executive committee member of the Student Council had motivated him to excel further in his studies. The Company Sergeant Major (CSM) of BB was awarded the Best Boy Medal by BB and accredited with the BB Founders Award, the most prestigious award in the senior programme. Zhe Hao is furthering his studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic under the Polytechnic Foundation Programme. This programme is a one-year programme that offers a practice-curriculum to better prepare students from the Normal (Academic) stream for entry into the relevant Polytechnic Diploma courses.

Motivation is a great source of encouragement to keep us going in times of challenges. As the saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” We hope that the achievements and stories of our top scorers will inspire North Stars to be motivated to push themselves to greater heights in the midst of preparing for their examinations.

An eventful start to 2014Appreciation Day 2014

By Sylvia Tan of Sec 4E

CVSS celebrates Appreciation Day on 14 February every year. Following CVSS tradition, students and teachers participate

in a game of Angel and Mortal in which everyone shows our appreciation and care for one another by writing little notes of encouragement for a period of one week leading up to the day. During this time, some angels also bless their mortals with inexpensive but meaningful gifts. This year, the celebration started with the teachers sharing The Five Language of Love during CT time to teach students ways to express our care and concern for the people around us, including our families. By celebrating this occasion, it reminds everyone that love can exist in many forms. It also teaches everyone how to show appreciation and express our care for one another in our lives.

Secondary One OrientationBy Caleb Tan of Sec 4F

The newest additions to the CVSS family reported to school on 4 January, 2014 with much enthusiasm and a tinge of

apprehension. To mark the start of a new milestone in their lives, the Secondary One students took part in activities to familiarise themselves with the school environment and to forge strong bonds with their new-found friends. The highlights of the orientation involved the facilitators leading them on a learning journey to the Sengkang Floating Wetland and preparing them to put up shows during the Performance Night. The students also visited the booths set up by the CCA groups in CVSS over the week. After the end of the orientation, the Secondary One students felt so much at home at CVSS and all ready to spend four fruitful years here.

Highlights of Term 1

Sec 1 Humanities Learning JourneyBy Ally Tan of Sec 1F

On 12 March, the Secondary 1 Express students journeyed into the exciting rainforest of the Singapore Botanic Gardens to

conduct fieldwork to learn more about tropical rainforests. Students enjoyed the refreshing break from the urban city that they live in.

Sec 2 KL Integrated Curriculum TripBy Ng Zyzann of Sec 2I

The Secondary 2 Express students picked up many values during the Integrated Curriculum (IC) trip to Kuala Lumpur from 12 to 14

March, 2014. One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the PureLife Society, where North Stars offered their service to the orphanage.

This is part of the Values-in-Action programme under the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). The students improved the library by decorating the interior with hand-made posters to bring words of encouragement into the children’s lives.

Sec 2 Experiential Learning By Amanda Mah of Sec 2D

The Secondary 2 Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students took part in the Experiential Learning

Programme from 12 to 14 March, 2014.

The students then played historical detectives on 14 March when they went on a historical tour. Besides uncovering archaeological treasures in Fort Canning Park, the students also visited the National Museum Singapore where they were treated to a visual feast of Singapore’s history. The historical detectives went away filled with knowledge about Singapore. Many could hardly contain their excitement of sharing their newfound knowledge with their friends.

The programme began at the Civil Service Club on Day One, with the students going through obstacle courses to build up their resilience. The programme continued on the second day with a series of outdoor activities. Part of this outdoor experience required the students to pitch tents in teams. The students’ teamwork was also put to the test in some strategy games. Although the games were seemingly simple, they tested students’ creativity and problem-solving abilities.

On the third day, the students went on a trip to Sungei Buloh. The trip turned out to be more than a discovery trip as the students had to complete an Amazing Race. Students completed the trails and enjoyed the peacefulness of the area as they overcome the challenges posed to them from station to station.

North Stars also spent meaningful time interacting and bonding with the children through games and songs. Although the stay was a brief one, the students at the orphanage enjoyed the company of our students. North Stars were also infected by their liveliness and felt extremely encouraged by their enthusiasm and kind gestures.

Through this experience, North Stars showed empathy for the children who are less privileged. They were also reminded of the importance of exercising resilience in the face of challenges. Meeting the people in-charge of the Society also provided them the opportunity to show respect.

To many students, this trip will remain a memory for a long time to come.

The camp was designed to allow students to gain a greater sense of self-awareness as they react to the challenges posed by the outdoor environment.Through this camp, students learnt how to overcome new challenges by venturing beyond their comfort zone. The most valuable lesson for the students was the importance of teamwork as they managed to overcome the obstacles as a class.

They gained a wealth of experience and knowledge through the teambuilding games put together by experienced instructors. The students also managed to enjoy the scenic view and rustic ambience of the village as they were given the opportunity to stay in the tents that they had pitched.

Through this experience, students displayed great resilience in adapting to an environment that is different from their homes.

Professional Staff Development Day 2013

On 14 November 2013, the Staff Professional Development Committee organised the Staff Professional Development Day. Staff Professional

Learning Teams (PLTs) came together to share ideas on innovative teaching practices and learn about the innovations which other teams have collaboratively made with regard to teaching and learning. Staff members of the various PLTs presented many engaging presentations at the keynote and concurrent sessions. Staff members were enthused and enlightened by the plethora of ideas, research and suggestions shared during these sessions.CVSS staff rounded up the day with a fruitful time of learning and fun at the S.E.A. Aquarium Marine Life Park (MLP). It was a time for staff to reflect on environmental issues and Character and Citizenship Education as they learned about the efforts taken by MLP in putting Singapore on the map for innovative methods of marine conservation. Everyone also gained awareness of MLP’s contribution to Singapore’s tourism and economy. This time of learning and bonding was made more meaningful and memorable with the presence of family members who joined the CVSS family on the trip.

Republic of Korea-Singapore Teacher Exchange Programme

Partnering our ParentsSecondary One Orientation Talk 2014

To mark the fresh beginning of the educational milestone for the Secondary One students and their parents at CVSS, the school invited the parents

to an information-sharing session on the school direction, policies and key programmes. Close to 250 parents attended the session which was held on 4 January, 2014. It is part of CVSS’s tradition to engage parents, so as to involve parents in their children’s growth and education. Besides introducing the new syllabus for Character and Citizenship Education (CCE), the CCE committee also introduced the objectives of the school’s Sexuality Education. Through these talks, parents gained an insight into the integral role that they play in crafting a holistic education that is well-supported by the school and the family. The feedback from the parents had been positive. Majority of them felt that the information shared had helped them understand the school’s culture better. They also felt that the information had been useful in helping themselves and their children make a smoother transition to secondary school education.

Two Korean teachers turned stars at CVSS from 18 to 28 February, 2014!

Mr Kim Jae Yong, a high school Mathematics teacher, and Ms. Jun Chan Hee, a middle school Physics teacher visited CVSS on the Republic of Korea (RoK)-Singapore Teacher Exchange Programme 2014 organised by the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding. The objective of this programme is to enhance the global educational competence of teachers in Asia and the Pacific through cultural exchanges. Under this programme, selected teachers from the participating schools will experience the culture of their partnering schools. To welcome our guests from Korea, CVSS lined up a series of activities that took the teachers into the classrooms to teach students a range of topics which covered academic subjects to the culture of Korea. After observing how some of the upper secondary classes are taught, Mr. Kim felt that it is good practice for teachers to highlight the lesson objectives at the start of every lesson. “This way, the students will be clear about what they will learn,” he said.Besides co-teaching and exchanging ideas with their CVSS counterparts, Mr. Kim and Ms. Jun also observed how non-academic activities in CVSS are conducted. The teachers were most impressed by how the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) lessons and the Co-Curricular activities (CCAs) are conducted.Commenting on her experience in the CCE lessons, Ms. Jun said, “Students need to be connected to the real world. I feel that the scenarios given in the case studies are effective to stimulate critical thinking.” They also learned how CVSS incorporates our school values with National Education into our CCE lessons.Comparing the CCAs in the Korean schools with that of Singapore, the teachers also realised the student-centric nature of the CCAs here. According to the duo, unlike Singapore, CCAs in Korea are led by teachers. They felt that CCAs in Singapore provide a good platform for students to develop leadership skills.

Coming on this trip, the teachers had more to share beyond academic knowledge. Toppoki became the highlight of a class when Mr. Kim and Ms. Jun whipped up the dish for the students to enjoy. Toppoki is a popular Korean snack food made from soft rice cake, fish cake and sweet red chili sauce.

In fact, food is not a rare sight in Ms. Jun’s classes as she frequently uses food to teach science concepts. She gives the example of using food to teach a lesson on cell division. She believes that this method of teaching will entice her students to turn up for lessons. “Food draws people together—I feel closer with my students when I invite them to eat with me,” she said. The hospitality of the CVSS staff and graciousness of the students created deep memories for Mr. Kim and Ms. Jun. Having interacted with the students for two weeks, the two teachers departed with a simple wish: to be able to welcome North Stars to their schools on a cultural exchange one day.
