Developed Countries.• Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---You have a choice to make from eight
different political cartoons to respond to. • Select ONE political cartoon.• Then answer the following questions using your prior knowledge and notes
from the Developed and Developing Nations Lesson Plan:• a)What is the cartoonist’s main point or argument? How do you know this?• b)How does the content of the political cartoon relate to what we learned in
the last lesson about Developing and Developed Nations and the causes and cycle of poverty? Explain and give examples.

Day One: Tuesday, Sept 17, 2013• Class: Students will share their observations on the political cartoons and Ms.
Barben will record the class responses on the Smartboard. Students can follow and add the additional comments and ideas to the political cartoons in the lesson. Overall, what conclusions can we form at this point?
• Individual: For this Common Course Assessment, SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT,
you will be selecting ONE country from either the Middle East or Africa to research and compare and contrast to the United States. With this project, we will be going into the library and learning how to research and create bibliographies and how to cite.

Day One: Tuesday, Sept 17, 2013• This project has three main objectives:• Introduce you to the research resources available in the library.• Introduce you to how to use those resources to complete research about your assigned nation.• Teach you how to use that research to analyze and better understand significant statistics about that nation.• • Using the information from your research, you are to then create a powerpoint presentation that does the following:• Analyzes basic statistics about the United States.• Analyzes basic statistics about your assigned African or Middle Eastern nation.• Compares/Contrasts the statistics about the United States and your assigned nation.• Explains the significance of your research. DO NOT simply copy and paste information from your sources. Understand and
explain each slide’s purpose. Ask yourself the questions: “What do these statistics tell me about my nation? Why is this significant?”
• Include parenthetical citations that allow the reader to find the source of your information.• • REMEMBER to keep track of all your sources while you complete your research as you will be expected to cite where you
find your information using parenthetical citations. • The three main sources you will be using are the ABC-CLIO online database, the CIA-World Factbook website and the BBC

• J) Developing vs. Developed Nation• Reflection Question: Answer within
your Developing vs Developed Nation Slides.• Looking at categories C through H,
assess whether your nation would be labeled as developing or developed. Use evidence from class discussion/notes and your research to support this label.• Use must use at least THREE categories
for your evaluation. • THIS SHOULD BE AT LEAST THREE WELL

• As discussed in class, this section will ask you to dive more deeply into the research of your nation. Using the BBC Country Overviews, ABC-CLIO’s History & Contemporary Issues tabs, and the CIA World Factbook’s Transnational Issues section, complete research of ALL of the major issues occurring in your nation.
• Once you have a clear understanding of them all, choose ONE issue that you think is the most significant or surprised/bothered you the most. Make connections between your nations’ statistics and the causes/effects of your chosen issue.
• Also, to fully understand your issue, you are required to find one more source beyond ABC-CLIO and the CIA website. For example, find an article or current event from CNN, The Washington Post, New York Times, Associated Press, etc. BECOME AN EXPERT ON YOUR ISSUE.

• L) Sources Slide• Throughout your presentation, you should be
creating parenthetical citations to direct anyone viewing your slides to your source of information. For example, if you found your population statistics on the CIA website, it should be clearly stated on the Population Statistics slide.• On the final slide of your presentation, you should
present a clear list of your sources (think bibliography or works cited page). • You are required to have at least 4 sources:• 1) ABC-CLIO Database• 2) CIA World Factbook website• 3) BBC website• 4) Source(s) of your choice•
