as mayor of Hurricane city it is my pleasure to enthusiastically welcome both the filmmakers and the attendees to the Red Rock Film Festival in southern utah. We are pleased the Festival has chosen to include screenings in Hurricane November

7th through the 9th along with the screenings in Zion National Park on November 1st and showings in st. George on November 2nd and 6th. i support the Festival’s mission and am looking forward to the themes being presented this year, including magicians, National and state Parks, and preserving the land. i hope everyone enjoys the films and the warm southern utah hospitality.

i trust all Festival visitors will enjoy their time in Hurricane. our people are friendly. our museums offer insights into the rich history of our area. our cafes and restaurants offer a variety of dining choices. and our pickleball courts await friendly, competitive exercise.Welcome!

— mayor tom Hirschi

With much gratitude that Zion Park has reopened, welcome to the 7th annual Red Rock Film Festival and Red Film market! this year the festival has selected 65 diverse films from 363 films submitted from 26 countries,

including animated shorts, dramatic fiction, documentaries, experimental films and music videos. a big special thanks goes out to our program committee and to all the sponsors and volunteers who make this festival possible! as a half-way point between our kick-off screenings in Zion National Park and st. George, we have landed in the courteous town of Hurricane and are enlightened with the hospitality and enthusiastic

involvement the city has shown. screenings in Hurricane will be at the old elementary school, known today as the Hurricane Fine arts center across the street from the community center. We invite you as you watch the international films and meet their filmmakers, to look beneath the iceberg, the spark of subtext in the theme of the film. For every motion picture, there is the story beneath the story, whether subconscious or intentional, there is a plot line to follow like a mystery novel where we imagine what really happened. it is these fine points that have double meaning with a glint of the eye, a monologue, a musical overtone and makes a film so much more enriching for our mind.enjoy!

the humanity of the film gives it a broad appeal with en-gaging subjects and an intriguing premise… “What would you want the last thing you see to be?” With a likable, un-pretentious cast, this documentary manages to connect with the audience… satisfying without being devastating. two brothers, tod and Justin Purvis are faced with a rare genetic disease that causes blindness (choroideremia) and decide to take the road trip of a lifetime around the united states and see everything possible before going blind. exploring large cities and small towns, camping in national parks, pushing themselves to their limits while meeting strangers and mak-ing new friends, driving Blind is the story of appreciating what you have, while you have it. the film is a portrait of what makes america beautiful, what really matters in life, and what we as human beings do with our short time here.

the honesty comes through in this documentary that ex-plores the dimensions of grief over the loss of a pet. Heart-warming and heartening, it touches on sentimental qualities without being saccharine. the sociological evolution of pets in the u.s. today has affected those in the veterinary profes-sion and death care industry. many professionals preserve a pet’s body or re-purpose a pet’s cremains in unique ways. a stunningly beautiful new film spotlights the rebels, a group of citizens from many walks of life, who fought to pre-serve open space, protect agriculture and wildlife, establish public parks next to a densely populated urban center yearn-ing for access to nature. ReBels celebrates the people and passion that saved the coastal wonders that would become the Point Reyes National seashore and the Golden Gate Na-tional Recreation area. With california’s rapid population rise in the 1950s, the california coast seemed destined to follow the prevalent pattern of suburban development. But, these rebels changed the fate of the land. their efforts set new precedents for protecting open space and shaped the envi-ronmental movement as we know it today.

Four family struggles unfold in the small efforts that com-prise their daily lives. the imagery is powerful and leads the eye with singular focus – the opening sequence, for instance, is a wide shot: harvesting cane and bamboo in the cambodian jungle. the sound of chopping through the vegetation reveals the crudeness of a sharp bladed ‘axe’ — roll back to a tiny girl wielding the knife, wearing a basket over her shoulders. the story sets its own cinematic mood of folks whose survival depends on the river: brown skin, brown water, brown soil on the banks along with vast jungles that inhabit the extent of the story. Whether fishers or rice grow-ers the pace and sound become a rhythm of futility.

Plays with The Man who Lived on his Bike

shelter island resident and ‘outsider’ artist Harald olson share his eclectic tastes with Jimmy olinkiewicz, a blue-collar gas station owner. the film follows their amazing journey from selling paintings alongside a picket fence to a major show-ing at a chelsea art gallery in manhattan. Jim becomes the embodiment of all that was once good in the business world — a small business owner who makes decisions not because they necessarily lead to profit, but simply because it’s the right thing to do. as the father of an autistic child, he’s also “paying it forward” by helping the “outsider” Harald find his way to success and happiness. Harald olson, on the other hand, is the personification of aRt. He is consumed with painting, sometimes going in 72 hours stretches where he “forgets” to eat. money has almost no value to him, as his clothing and painting materials are found in the town dump. in conversation, Harald does his best to make small talk, but eventually every conversation returns obsessively to one about the process of painting and creating art.

19,000 velcro dots. 18 months. two velcro dot-suits. 20 vol-unteer ‘velcro pushers’. a girl. a guy. space. skin. atoms... Freckle! “Freckle” is a music video created by visual artist and computational biologist mike cantor, with music by Brandon Patton, bass player for mc Frontalot. the video employs an original stop-animation technique which cantor calls ‘velcro rotoscoping’: thousands of colorful velcro dots are arrayed like pixels onto a grid, photographed, and then superim-posed one frame at a time onto live-action video. the dots bring to life a love song about two objects in space, orbiting and colliding, and the scales that measure their attraction.

mike cantor is an oakland, ca-based visual artist and pattern junky. By day he designs visualizations for dNa sequence data for the us department of energy. on nights and weekends he tinkers with an animation tech-nique he invented called “velcro Rotoscoping”

in which velcro circles in hundreds of colors and patterns are moved like pixels across a 36-dot by 27-dot grid to create frames of video. His debut short “Hot velcro action” played in over a dozen film festivals internationally and won “Best experimental Film” and “Best visual effects” at the los ange-les New Wave Film Festival in 2010.

the Beatles, Bill Gates, spielberg, virtuoso pianists and hall of fame athletes, all share a similar background: approximately 10,000 hours of dedicated practice before their mid-20’s. the Beatles played 7 nights a week, eight hours a night in Hamburg; Gates programmed non-stop for 7 years through his teens and college days. spielberg, Howard stern, steve martin, all started their careers as kids doing what they love to do, not waiting for permission or certification. When mal-colm Gladwell wrote ‘outliers’, his chapter on 10,000 Hours helped Nick understand the journey to be cut from the same cloth. the film combines archive footage, poetry, philosophy, and the hopes and fears of a talent on the cusp of adulthood.
