• Nothing matches the Turbo for RPMs, CFMs and Air Velocity.

TURBO ™

The Turbo pushes the air at 5560 feet per minute. This is 22% faster and harder than other fans. Toachieve this, the custom engineered Turbo motorrotates at 1740 RPMs, faster than any other competi-tive livestock fan.

• The Dominant Motor Quality ... How? The sealed ball bearing Nidec - Emerson 1/2 HP rated motor features a 10% longer stator and rotor than standard 1/2 HP motors.

This interior assembly is called ‘stack.’ The more length creates more horse power. It borders the edge of what would be considered a 5/8 HP motor, if there was such a category (which there is not). This longer ‘stack’ enables the motor to run faster andhandle the load put on this motor from the high pitched blade. In turn, it keeps the motor running 11% cooler as compared to competitors 1/2 HP motors. Hence, the reason for the Turbo’s very few warranties. All while only drawing 4 AMPs of electricity, equaling a super efficient fan!

• The Problem-Free Guard!

Constructed of 7 guage and 11 guage steel wire that is formed into a continuous one-piece loop formation. This one-piece loop cre-ates added crush proof strength because of the elimination of welded butt joints that can break.

No other fan guard withstands the rigors of the show road like the Turbo. Guard complies with OSHA regulations. Front of guard opens so you can easily clean the blades to keep your

fan running at its peak performance. Specially coated in black color for a cleaner appearance.

More Air ... Less Trouble.

"Climate is what we expect; weather is what we get"

-- Mark Twain

The calendar says spring is here, but most of us mark the seasons by the actual weather in our area, rather than what the calendar says. For us here in the West, it's already getting dry and the hills are turning brown earlier than we would like. For those living in the Midwest and Eastern U.S., a late winter has been on the rampage. Mother Nature – you can love her or hate her, but we always have to deal with her! As the weather changes, we always have to be aware of the conditions for our animals to keep them comfortable. This is especially important with show animals and junior projects. As it heats up, rate of gain slows down, so you need to provide plenty of shade and wa-ter and make adjustments to reach your target weight for fair. Management and observation are key factors in your success. It could be the difference between finished and not quite market ready – or the difference between first and second place.

In this issue we have two exciting features – The CJLA Award Banquet and the “All-Around” Kids section. These two spreads are so much fun! The CJLA spot highlights the members, their winnings and we recognize the many sponsors that help make this event so special. Putting on the banquet is a huge undertaking each year, but is so rewarding as everyone comes together to honor our youth who love raising animals, and reaf-firming our faith in the future of agriculture.

The “All Around” Kid section shows just how involved our read-ership is in so many different activities. Not only do they raise and show animals, but they commit to the time and dedica-tion for sports. Everything a child is involved in helps them to become a well rounded adult. All their experiences growing up help them to plan, set goals, budget time, and achieve success in their adult life. Being a grownup takes work - and we need all the tools we can acquire to help us along the way!

Next issue is the big state fair issue! This would be a great time to highlight your ranch, business, or program in an ad that will be seen at state fairs throughout the west. We will also be doing a Graduation Section, so plan to send in your photos. We need a picture of when they first started showing, along with a gradua-tion photo. Look for the details in this issue for the information we need along with your photos.

As always, let us know if you move so you don’t miss an issue. Send us your candid photos for our Hot Shot sections and let us know of events you would like listed in our upcoming events section. As we roll into summer, stay cool, have fun, and good luck at all the upcoming jackpots and fairs.

"Sittin' Round the Showbox"with Celeste Settrini

Where does the time go? We say that all the time but it’s true! Another month is upon us which means another issue to be published and another chance for me to share my thoughts with my friends of Pacific Showcase Magazine. As I sat at my blank computer screen thinking what I would write this month I thought of the county fairs that are starting. It’s another start of new friendships, new challenges, new projects and new experiences. But the one thing that remains con-stant and can’t be talked about enough is good sportsmanship. We have talked sportsmanship before but I think at the start of fair season it is certainly worth repeating. Don’t you think?

Once again, as I have mentioned many times before, I love to read. I especially love reading self-help books, motivational snippets and the like. This month I take my inspiration from a really good article I read by Jeff Hayden. His article was entitled 10 Things Extraordinary People Say Every Day. It focused on making people feel good, whether it was colleagues, family, friends or employees. As I continued to read his 10 Things I thought to myself – Wow – this would be great to share with my friends in Pacific Showcase. My column has morphed into more of a self-help spot, a place where young people can come and read something that is written simply and then hopefully can take what I say and implement it into their daily life. I have gotten some good feedback so we will keep doing it.

10 things to tuck away in the tack Box

OK, back to the 10 Things – here we go!

• Here is what I am thinking – Take the time to share thoughts and ideas with others. This opens up the doors for conversations, pulls folks together and creates improvement on your own thoughts.

• I was wrong – Always admit if you have done wrong. When you are wrong say it; you will not lose respect, you will gain it .

• That was awesome – No one ever gets enough praise. Give it, it makes folks grow and become better. As Jeff says, praise is a gift that costs the giver nothing but is priceless to the recipient. When you say something nice to someone it makes you feel good, too.

• You are welcome – Don’t let thanks, praise or congratulations be all about you. When someone wishes you well, be grateful and respond back just as enthusiastically.

• Can you help me? – When you need help, ask. I promise you will get help — in my lifetime I cannot seriously remember a time when I asked someone “can you help me?” and the answer was no.

• I am sorry – Say you are sorry, say why you are sorry and take the blame, then move on.

• Can you show me? – Advice is temporary but knowledge is forever. When you truly want to know something, ask and then pay atten-tion.

• Let me give you a hand – Be helpful. Everyone needs help and flat-out NO, it is not a sign of being weak.

• I love you – Every time you mean it or feel it, I believe it is okay.

• Nothing – Sometimes the best thing to do is just be there but don’t say anything. If you notice a friend upset or frustrated or angry, you might wish to stay quiet, offer a smile and then check back later to make sure the person is okay.

I think any of these 10 Things can prove to be a good tool not only for everyday life but for fair time! We encounter lots of emotions during fair time. For some it is pure joy, some disap-pointment, frustration, excitement, nervousness, anxious-ness…and the list goes on. Be a good sport in all situations, because a good sport, no matter the situation, is always a champion. When packing the tack box for your next fair, be sure to pack the 10 Things, too!!!

ProEnhancer sprays on evenly and increases the volume and diameter of individual hair follicles to creat a solid, full look and prevent see-through.

Quick drying action allows ProEnhancer to be easily clipped and covered with touch up paint for a ring-ready look.

When the San Luis Obispo County 4-H program was looking for a new youth director, the ad should have read, “Wanted, someone good at herding cats.”

More than thirty years ago, our growing family had arrived in San Luis Obispo County. With a three-year-old toddler and a baby in my arms, I really wanted to be a part of this community, and what better way to do that than to volunteer for a program that had enriched my teen years? I sought out a 4-H club, El Paso De Robles, and took on the leadership task of the Beginning Girls project.

Richard Enfield was still in college at Cal Poly, but he was soon to revolutionize the SLO County 4-H program. He came at the per-fect time. SLO County 4-H was desperate for a leader, one who could ride with loose reins and was good at herding cats.

“Learning by doing,” describes Richard’s journey to the SLO County 4-H program. Born in Irvington, New Jersey, he retains just a touch of an East Coast accent to let you know he is here by design rather than birth. In June of 1971 he headed to sunny California to study at U.C. Santa Barbara, but dropped out after five quarters. Running a business, community gardening, and studying farming finally led him, in 1977, to Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo. The school’s hands-on approach to learning and Enfield’s can do approach were a perfect match.

In 1980, Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences degree and was headed to a teaching position at San Luis Obispo High School, but by a splendid stroke of good luck, he was offered a job by the University of California Extension Service. What he inherited in the SLO County 4-H program was a pretty good

bunch of leaders and an awesome bunch of kids, but the program needed work. Richard Enfield was the perfect cat wrangler for the job.

When Richard came on board, my kids were seven and three. I counted my 4-H leadership years by the age of my oldest child and by the time we landed in SLO County, I had been a leader in four clubs around California. After I had attended a couple of frustratingly uncoordinated 4-H events, I wrote Richard, the new 4-H guy, a two-page letter with my criticisms. I knew he was a keeper when he responded and had my hand-written critique highlighted in yellow marker. Here was someone willing to listen and, I would learn later, able to harness my interest in making the best better.

Things were running smoother. County-wide events were being planned and implemented. My kids and I were enjoying a great 4-H experience when Richard called a few of us together, bribing us with a promised free lunch, and revealed that the San Luis Obispo County 4-H program, as we knew it, was about to change and we were going to be the ones to help him do it. No longer would he be in charge of only 4-H activities, but he would be coor-dinating non-school educational opportunities for all the youth of San Luis Obispo County. His job was to be much more than cows and cookin’.

For close to a year, our committee met and brainstormed about how to make this new 4-H work. Richard asked questions, took notes, offered suggestions and got us really using our thinking caps. What was born was the leader-based Program Development Board, made up of enthusiastic volunteers, Key Leaders, inter-ested in coordinating events, activities and opportunities for any kind of 4-H project you could think of.

San Luis Obispo County has one of the strongest and most active 4-H programs in the state, perhaps even nation-wide.

Richard Enfield harnessed the power that we 4-H volunteers didn’t even know we possessed.

Fast forward thirty years. My daughter is now the mother of a SLO County 4-H member and our family is ready once again for the 4-H challenge. I was so looking forward to seeing Richard Enfield at county activities, but after thirty-three years, he will be retiring. I hope it is only coincidence and that the two events are not related.

So what has Richard Enfield taught me?

• 4-H is more than cookin’ and cows.

• You can really learn something by doing it

• Speaking before a crowd is not a fatal activity

• Whatever you say will eventually come back to you

• While sometimes it is easier to do it yourself, the easy way is not always the best

• Put that thinking cap on and come up with a good idea

• Ask not what 4-H can do for you, but rather what you can do for 4-H.

Head, Heart, Hands and Health! Thank you, Mr. Richard Enfield! You “Make the Best Better!”

By Brooke Bennett - Directory of Communication, north american limousin Foundation

It’s that time of year! Is everyone ready for county fair? Most of you have spent the better part of the year preparing for the weeklong event that gives exhibitors the opportunity to compete against their best friends, rivals and frenemies.

There is no fiercer competition in the world of livestock shows than the competition that takes place at a county fair. Regardless of the state in which you reside, these expositions are all wildly competitive across all species. Although it has been a while since I exhibited livestock at a county fair, I can assure you that the intense competition hasn’t changed. Some counties seem to be even more competitive than the state fair.

I’ll be honest: Showing at junior national shows and major open

shows had a tendency to be slightly less stressful. That being said, across the board, this is that much-anticipated, memory-making, exhilarating and exhausting week that finally arrives for local 4-H and FFA members. This is more often than not a total club, chapter and family affair, where exhibitors get a chance to get their first taste of the competitive livestock show world. For many exhibitors, this may be the only stock show they partici-pate in each year. It’s local, it’s a county-wide celebration, and it’s less expensive than road-tripping from one end of the state to the other jackpotting, which is not an option for many. The road warriors may have lost sight of how much this one show means to kids who put all of their effort into this once-a-year project.

One of my favorite quotes is “If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders,” said by Abigail Van Buren. I strongly believe that giving a student the responsibility of raising an animal for the fair does just that. Raising an animal for a county fair teaches participants the daily responsibility of caring for an animal while providing them with the opportunity to begin developing a college fund for when they graduate and pursue the next phase of their life. Many schools offer on-campus farms where kids with no place to raise livestock can experience a real shot of responsibility. This is the culmina-tion of a real adventure for these individuals.

I know that my past county fair experiences will mimic that of many others. It was always a long, grueling, hot week spent com-peting against many of my fellow classmates. Competitors always brought their “A” game and it was not a time to slack just because it wasn’t a state or national show. Just the opposite was true.

It’s not just a competition among the participants, but also among the local 4-H clubs and FFA chapters for local bragging rights. That is no small thing.

County fairs can also be a week of high drama and raucous fun. There are the tears of a young show person, (or even a not-so-young one), when they have to say goodbye to the animal that they have so lovingly cared for. There is much laughter. There are many sunburns, water fights at the wash racks, fair crushes, cases of nerves before show time, lost hats, ties, canes, combs, par-ents — you name it. Proud grandparents are glued to the ringside in their folding chairs at least a half hour before the show to get a prime spot at the rail. Often, at least in our area, many of these grandparents, as well as the parents of the participants, showed in those same rings. It’s how much of a family tradition these shows can be for some individuals.

This is where communities and families come together to compete and to celebrate a very longstanding tradition. It’s where memo-ries are made, responsibility is learned and friendships are devel-oped. I wish all of you county fair participants the best, and good luck!

important CJLa news anD UpDates!

As 2013 quickly approaches the halfway point of the year, most CJLA members have worked many hours and traveled many miles of highway to compete at CJLA sanctioned jackpot shows. It continues to be exciting to see so many new and returning members enjoy being a part of the CJLA experience. As you trav-el from show to show, PLEASE take the time to thank the people who are putting those shows on. They are doing it for YOU! And telling them you enjoyed and appreciated their efforts, is the best reward you can give.

I sure can’t believe how quickly the time goes by. I find myself pulled in more directions than ever with work, and taking care of animals, and family obligations. Unfortunately, that makes me get behind on doing some other things. Recording points is one of those! I know everyone wants to see where they are standing in their divisions and I am working through the show results I have received so far. In this issue, all members are listed in the divi-sions they joined for 2013. Please check that your name is listed in the correct species and correct age divisions. Heifer and steer divisions list all names and will be divided into the correct breeds or colors when points are recorded and posted. IF YOU DO NOT SEE YOUR NAME OR IT IS LISTED INCORRECTLY, PLEASE CONTACT ME SO I CAN CHECK RECORDS AND MAKE ANY CHANGES NECESSARY!!

POINTS will be posted ASAP on the website and I will send an email message to all members when they are available for view-ing. If you have not provided an email address with your CJLA membership so we can send notifications, just check the CJLA website regularly.

We will continue to send out CJLA news by email and also post on the CJLA website. This greatly saves on postage, so please be sure to open and read your emails from CJLA. And check on the website for updates and news between issues of this magazine. If you need to update or add an email address so you receive e-blasts from us, please let us know!

In this issue is the section featuring the Award Banquet held on February 16th, 2013. For those of you who were 2012 members and were not able to attend, we still have many unclaimed prizes and member t-shirts in the office. We would like to ship you yours and we are only asking for a minimum donation of $5.00 to help offset the cost of mailing. Please send in your postage fee and we will get your items shipped right away. Mail your payment to CJLA PO Box 41430 San Jose, CA 95160 .

A couple of IMPORTANT UPDATES!!!! The CNPHA Jackpot Show has changed the location where their event will be held. It has moved from the Amador Co. Fairgrounds in Plymouth to the Placer Co. Fairgrounds in Roseville. The Show is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2013. The High Desert Classic scheduled for May 25-26 in Victorville has been cancelled for this year. An email was sent out informing everyone that the crew at Kern County Fair-grounds in Bakersfield had scheduled 3 shows for the weekend of Nov. 9-10, 2013 for all species. It was incorrectly stated on the e-blast that these shows are CJLA sanctioned. THEY ARE NOT SANCTIONED THIS YEAR!! The fairgrounds is holding 3 shows for steers, heifers, lambs, hogs, and goats but none of the shows count for points. This will be a great learning show/event! Mark your calendars!!

On Saturday, Shawn and Delores McCarty, owners of T & M Towing, in Tulare, CA had taken a very excited daughter, Colleen, brother Corey, and Colleen’s boy-friend to the Los Angeles Garment District to buy her a Prom dress.

On the trip home a right rear tire on the family's Expedition blew out and they hit the center divider of the I-5 interstate near Magic Mountain. Colleen was ejected and sustained a brain injury and multiple broken bones. She remains hospitalized in Valencia, CA, about 200 miles from home.

Colleen, a junior at Tulare Joint Union High School, is an active member of FFA and a recognized boer goat showman in the state of California. She was recently honored at the 2013 CJLA banquet as the 3rd highest overall goat showman.

The community has rallied around this wonderful family and are asking where they can send donations for the mounting expenses that they are incurring so far from home. Checks made out to Delores McCarty can be sent to P.O. Box 190, Tipton, CA 93272.

There are many in the community making frequent trips to Valencia and will deliver all donations to them. Please offer prayers and support for a speedy recovery for one of our own livestock family.

"A True Champion" By Savannah Miller, 1st Place Essay Contest Winner, Senior Division

As I grew up surrounded by the livestock industry, I use to believe being the “winner” meant getting the purple banner and receiving that strong, firm Supreme Grand handshake from the judge. Over the years in the CJLA, however, I have come to realize that you do not need a buckle or a banner to be a winner, that sometimes the real winners go home empty handed from the show. I have been lucky enough to be a member of the CJLA for the past three years and have acquired so much knowledge of not only livestock, but life. It has made me into a grounded, well-rounded person who can see beyond the sparkle of buckles and purple shine in the banners.

When we are little and running around livestock shows, we assume the winners are the people who are standing in front of the backdrop with the judge or driving away with a back seat filled with awards. Once we reach the age to be in the show ring though, we realize there are many more qualities that compose a winner than just titles. Being a winner means that you are a determined, gracious, helpful person. We see that the true winners are the ones who worked hard everyday at home with their animals (not their parents or siblings), who busted their butts off on show day getting those animals show ready, and who can walk away from the ring with a smile on their face whether they were selected Supreme or not. The titles do not define us, how we carry ourselves and our work ethic define the winner within us.

A winner is a person who does not take no for an answer and is deter-mined to accomplish every goal they set for themselves. To be a true winner in life, you can not be afraid to put the sweat, blood, and tears into your passion that is needed to be successful. Only with these three components will you be able to accomplish even the smallest goal. A win-ner will work through the rough times and will push themselves even harder next time to accomplish their goal. As you look around the show barn, you can see there are winners of every shape and size in every corner. Every single person at any livestock show had to achieve some sort of goals before arriving there, whether they finally got their show-manship hog to hold its head up while on the drive, were able to grow that extra inch of hair on their new heifer, or just getting the chance to attend one more show during jackpot season. No matter how small the accomplished goal is, it makes you a winner!

Being a winner can be as simple as getting your friend to laugh after a tough loss or giving a young showman a few words of advice before they hit the show ring. The greatest winners are those who are willing to give a helping hand to any one in need no matter how inconvenient it is to them. Helping someone else accomplish their goals can give you an even greater feeling of accomplishment than when you reach your own goals.

Seeing the shine of admiration in the eyes of new showman when they ask for a showmanship tip or feeding advice is the most amazing feeling! How could you not feel like a winner knowing that kids look up to and aspire to be you? I remember being so amazed by my uncle, Nick Gon-

zales, Kylie Watson, and all the other young showmen when I watched them at jackpot shows. They were all champions and livestock geniuses to me. No matter how they placed, I always thought they won and aspired to be them. Just the thought that there could be young CJLA members thinking the same of me is incredible! That alone would make me feel like a winner.

Not only has the CJLA shown me there is more to winning than getting the purple, it has allowed me to take my passion to a whole new level. Before I began showing in the CJLA show circuit, I only showed once a year at my county fair. I absolutely love being in the show ring and getting the opportunity to show every weekend was and still is a dream come true.

From being in CJLA, I have also made many friends and memories. I have become so close to people who I never would have had the opportu-nity to meet if I had not became involved in the CJLA. These people are like a second family to me and I can not imagine my life without them! If it was not for the CJLA, I would not be the person I am today. I have gained a new perspective on life and a hard work ethic that I would have been unable to obtain any where else. CJLA has become a constant part of my life and who I am. All my dreams and goals in life have been in-fluenced by the CJLA, from the college I wish to attend next year, to the career I want to have. After my years of membership, I want to become a large animal veterinarian specializing in swine and hope to attend UC Davis.

CJLA has also given me many amazing opportunities to advance myself in the livestock industry. I have met so many people from various states that produce livestock and have been asked to work at the sheep unit at UC Davis next year. All of this would not have been possible without the CJLA.

The CJLA is filled with winners, not only in front of the backdrop but back at the pens. This association showcases the people who win outside the ring and enables the members to see it is not all about the champi-ons. The true winners are behind the scenes and don't boast in the lime light; they are gracious, dedicated people. They know they need to live in the moment, because even though you are selected as the champion in the ring today by the judge, it does not mean you will be tomorrow. To be a true champion in life, you have to be a honest, hard working, deter-mined person.

"Team Mendez"By Josh Mendez, 1st Place Essay Contest Winner, Intermediate Division

A Buddhist proverb states, “A family is a place where minds come in contact with each other. If these minds love one another the home will be as beautiful as a flower garden. But if these minds get out of harmony with one another, it is like a storm that plays havoc with the garden.” A family most definitely needs to be in harmony and syn-chronized especially on show day and the days leading up to a show. Without the support of my family I would not be half as far as I am today nor half as successful in my show career and everyday life. We consider ourselves our own greatest allies and a team with a bond that cannot be broken. When one of our family members is missing the team is missing a vital part of our preparations. But when one falls down, others must pick up the slack. This has become ever clear this year with my sister turning nine and it being her first year as a member of the CJLA.

My dependence on my family begins months before the show day. It is a group effort when selecting lambs that my family feels will give us the best opportunity to do well at a specific show or throughout the show season. Once the sheep have been selected then with the input of my uncle Gabe we select a feeding program that will give the lambs the greatest chance to be the best they can be. Anxiously we all await show day and make our final preparations. We believe the weeks leading up to the show are the most critical and we have a saying in the barn that prior preparation prevents poor performance. Finally the much antici-pated day arrives and we take off for the show destination. Whether it be San Francisco and Cow Palace or Paso Robles and Western Bonanza we always have a good time the night before the show but get some well needed rest. As we wake up to the alarm the next morning, the car ride to the fairgrounds is silent except for maybe the faint tune of the radio. My mom likes to call it getting in the zone. We already have been told our jobs that are of the most importance. We always like to game plan and have an idea of what jobs we need to get done as weigh ins and showmanship approach. My dad is always that voice of inspiration on show day and knows our potential to well even if the odds are not in our favor. Dad knows the ins and outs of our tack and equipment and if there is ever an issue with our tack our other families tack Dad is the

one that everyone goes to for advice.

My honorary uncles Gabe and Ted are the sheep guys. If two men could be wise when it comes to jackpot shows, these two guys would be the definition of knowledgeable. Between the two their experience is off the charts and people throughout the show barn are envious that I have these two amazing guys on our team. Gabe is the man who puts things into action. He gets us going and doing our jobs. Ted on the other hands is the motivator. When we barely make the cut for showmanship, Ted gives us insight on how to do better and pretty much tells us that we can do better and he knows that our potential is limitless. My mom is the team captain. She makes sure we are on time and when it comes time she knows every class we are in and she knows what each animal weighs. She starts preparing for the show months in advance. She is in charge of entries and she does research to see who is judging that spe-cific show. If a hotel is needed my mom has the room booked six months in advance. My sister is the hardest working most inspirational 10 year old I have ever known. Being deaf in her left ear is not the easiest thing at times for her to deal with but she does an extraordinary job with it.

My family is the strongest unit I have ever seen. We have an uncon-ditional love for each other and know when to work hard. We also have had some of the greatest times of my life together on the road to and from a show. Memories have been made in which we will never forget. Sometimes we reminisce in the car and end up crying with laughter. A common saying is, “You are only as strong as your weakest link.” But what if you have no weak links and everyone on your team is strong, dedicated but also willing to learn? This creates the perfect storm and I am very thank-ful to be a part of this special team and I am proud to say that I am on Team Mendez.

"A Special Memory I Have Made Through CJLA"By madison andrade, 1st place essay Contest winner, Junior Division

2013 will be my fifth year showing my project animals at CJLA shows and I have made many memories since then. I have won and I have lost, but for me, I really enjoy the challenge to do my best.

One of my favorite memories was when I first started showing my steers and heifers. I was nervous and I was scared, because I didn’t know what to expect. We were going to Redwave Classic at Fresno State University. I was scared to go because I didn’t know what would happen or what to expect, but then I did really well, and I didn’t want to leave because of how much fun I had and the new friendships I had made. I had my family to show me what to do and how to do things the right way. We all worked together to get everything done. I learned to know what time my class goes in, and how much time it will take to fit my animal so I`m ready. I learned many new grooming and showing skills. I also learned how to show my animal in a ring full of other kids and animals. This was definitely challenging because cattle are big and move around, so keeping my own space was sometimes hard.

My most memorable part of showing that day, was when I was in the ring with my Charolais heifer, Stella. As the judge was making us walk in a circle, she kept on pushing me towards the gate. She knew she could push me around because I was little, and she was much big-ger and stronger than me, and at one point she stepped on my foot! It really hurt but I just kept pushing her and shoving her shoulder away

from me so she would move. Finally, she moved just enough so I could get my foot out. I hopped up and down a little and the judge waited for me to get moving in a circle again. Later when we were in line, the judge asked me how my foot was, and I laughed and said, “Not too bad!”. He told me, “Good Job!”. His words cheered me up and kept me going all day. I always like to look back on that special memory and laugh, especially when I see Stella out in the pasture every morning.

After I was all done showing, I watched other classes to see how the older kids did things. They had more experience than I did, and I learned from watching them too. Watching the older kids helped me figure out how to fix some of my little mistakes that I had made, and as I was watching, I also started to understand more about feet placement and walking with a steer or heifer correctly, so they won`t push you around.

I love seeing my friends at every jackpot and fair. We all encourage each other and we all enjoy doing the same things. I am also glad that we have the CJLA, because without it, I wouldn’t have been able to meet all of the friends I know now. CJLA also has many shows year round that I can take my animals to. I will always treasure the memories and experi-ences I have from showing and spending time with my family.

reach a target weight. By mixing the previous feed with the new, the rumen can transition and you don’t lose any efficiency on growth or feed conver-sion.

As mentioned above, you need to know the date for your target show or fair, and the goal weight for your wether. His goal weight is what you expect him to weigh based on the size of his frame and the age he will be at the target show. Obviously a small-framed goat is going to weigh

less than a large-framed goat. Don’t get distracted by the top weight limit at the fair, but what is ideal for your goat to develop into a meaty animal that is not too thin or too fat.

Growing meat goats typically gain about a half pound per day. Use simple math to determine the amount of weight he can gain. If everything goes well and you own the goat for 60 days before the target show, he will gain about 30 pounds. Therefore, if you start with a 50 pound goat + 30 pounds (60 days x .5 pounds per day) he will be about 80 pounds by show time.

Yes, some will gain more and some less, but this is a good rule of thumb. Depending on the season, how much time you have, and your success in raising meat goats in the past, you may want to start with a bigger goat, as setbacks do occur. I also recommend raising meat goats in pairs. They are extremely social herd animals and tend to eat and gain better with a “buddy” goat.

Another mathematical rule of thumb is that a goat will eat about 3-3.5% of his body weight in feed each day. In order to do this correctly you need to know what your goat weighs, then weigh the feed to be 3% for coasting and 3.5% for pushing him. If you do this right you will be increasing the amount fed proportionately with his growth.

A common question judges ask in the showring is, “What percent protein do you feed?” This is not intended to stump you, but rather to emphasize the importance of protein in growing and raising market animals. Read the feed tag and know the percent protein and percent fat of your feed.

Goats do not like to be cold. As young kids it is a good idea to feed a ration higher in fat, especially in winter to help keep him warm and grow-ing. He won’t gain if he is standing around shivering. Any time that you shear your goat, be sure to blanket him to keep him warm.

As your meat goat matures and you are getting closer to fair, you need to drop the fat percentage and increase the protein. This does two things: is helps muscle development and helps burn fat. There are several good supplements available that are high in fat and protein. It is important to evaluate your meat goats as individuals and feed them according to what they each need.

Most of the top market goat feed brands have fiber in them, but I like to add just a little (and I mean a LITTLE) handful of hay once a day. This is best given after they eat their main feed, as a treat. It goes a long way toward promoting overall health of your goat.

You know how important it is for your goat to be lean. Now you may be wondering, how do I tell if he is lean? The majority of us have to handle them. Put your hands on him and feel for muscle and fat. The main places to check are the forerib (behind shoulders mid-way from topline to under-line), the brisket (lowest part of neck and between front legs), and the hip bones. If any of these areas are soft or soggy to the touch your goat is fat.

Inspect the loin edge. Grab the loin edge behind the last rib and in front of the hip frequently during your goat’s development. When he is young it will feel bony, like the tips of your fingers. During growth and maturing it will fill in, and by your target show will be firm and plump.

A properly finished goat will be firm over his ribs. There is an easy way to understand what it should feel like. Make a fist. With your other hand, feel the back of your fisted hand. The skin moves over the bones and tendons, with no cushion between. That is how your goat should feel over his ribs. Most goats have to be taught to brace so the judge can get this firm feeling. For people who don’t understand why goats are shown braced, this is the main reason. We want them to feel like firm athletes, not couch potatoes.

The final step toward finishing your meat goat is exercise. If he is gaining right on schedule, has a pen large enough to play in, and is generally ac-

Hey Judy! How do I get the right finish on my market goat?

In the last issue of PS I talked about the market trend and some goals for meat goat projects. Now let’s talk about getting the right finish on your meat goat.

Based on what I have observed while judging and sorting meat goats over the past fifteen years, goats tend to be either over-finished (too fat) or under-finished (too lean). It can be a challenge to get them just right. With some planning it is more likely to hit your goal at the right time.

Follow my advice: Buy your goat from a reputable breeder with genet-ics geared to producing efficient meat goats. They will be able to tell you when their genetics mature, at what age and the expected finishing weight.

Know when your target show is; the fair where you will sell the goat in the junior livestock auction. Determine how many months, weeks or days you have to raise your goat to reach his optimal weight and condition.

If you follow these steps you are going to be able to get your wether to finish at the correct weight for his frame size and age, and peak for your target show.

Last issue I talked about the need for smaller, leaner market goats for our consumers. Don’t misunderstand me…these goats still need to be meaty! They are market animals and that means getting the most lean red meat possible.

Now that you have your goat, let’s talk about how to get him to the frame size and weight that is best for him.

Invariably when I ask county fair exhibitors what they are feeding their goat, someone says, “Sweet COB and a flake of hay.” (Sweet COB = Corn, Oats, and Barley mixed with molasses) Goats require vitamins, minerals, protein and supplements to grow with optimum performance. This cannot be done by feeding sweet COB and alfalfa.

Select a show goat feed from the feed company most readily available to you. The list is long of familiar feed companies. They all have research to show why theirs is superior. What good is it to you if you can’t get it when you need it? Or it is available locally, but has been sitting around and is not fresh? If you are determined to feed a particular brand and it is not available locally, check with your feed store and see if they have consid-ered adding other brands. They may add that line if they know there is demand for it. The main thing is to have a balanced complete feed readily available that is made specifically for meat goats.

Ask the breeder what feed your goat has been eating. If it is a different brand or ration than what you intend to feed, ask for a few pounds of feed to help him make the transition. Remember, goats are ruminants. It is the micro-organisms inside the rumen that aid in digestion. They develop specifically for the foods the ruminant consumes. If you suddenly change feed it takes time for new microbes to develop, so the animal does not absorb the nutrients. This is especially bad if you have a limited time to

Nipomo FFA member Riley E. Nilsen was elected into the highest office by her peers and will serve the California Association Future Farmers of America for an entire year. Her year of service will include plan-ning and conducting leadership conference for the 76,000 members, visiting the 358 chapters up and down California, and represent California on a National scope. “Riley has the heart of service and pas-sion for agriculture education and is most deserving of this honor. states her advisor, Rosemary Cummings.

More than 5,000 FFA members attended the 85th annual California State FFA Leadership Conference where they were challenged to live “beyond the frame” throughout the four-day conference.

Attendees were motivated by State FFA officers, as well as guest speakers. The workshops at California State University, Fresno in-

trigued students to develop their professional skills. The career show allowed students to see amusing antics from prospective colleges, as well as entertaining new ideas for their futures in the agricultural industry.

From public speaking to innovative production practices, students showcased their techniques in various competitions. Many contest winners will advance to compete at the National FFA Convention held in October.

The conference concluded with the election of the 2013–2014 State FFA officer team. Six officers will begin preparing for the upcoming year. Elected individuals were:

Riley Nilsen, Nipomo – State FFA PresidentValerie Canas, Santa Maria – State FFA Vice PresidentGabrielle Frank, Galt – State FFA SecretaryGage Willey, East Nicolaus – State FFA TreasurerSheldon Overton, McArthur – State FFA ReporterHunter Berry, San Joaquin – State FFA Sentinel

Four California FFA members were honored with the top Star Awards at the 85th California State FFA Leadership Conference during an onstage ceremony. Each of them had excelled in one of four areas related to production agriculture, agribusiness entrepreneur-ship, job placement and agricultural sciences.

California Star Farmer:

Roy Yates from the Lodi-Central FFA chap-ter was named the California Star Farmer state winner. Each year, the award recog-nizes the top production agriculture program and individuals with proven leadership skills. Considered the highest recognition in California for an aspiring young farmer, the award recognizes achievement in both career and leadership development. Yates main-tains his own cow/calf operation with 105 bred cows and over 700 acres of leased land.

California Star in Agribusiness:

Travis Clark from the Tulare-San Joaquin FFA chapter was named the California Star in Agribusiness state winner. The award recogniz-es an FFA member with the best agribusiness supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program. State finalists compete for this prestigious award, the highest achievement for a person pursuing a career in agribusiness. Clark’s project consists of cutting and selling firewood. Clark harvests pine, oak, eucalyptus and citrus wood for his custom-ers through the Tulare area.

California Star in Agricultural Placement:

Matthew VanderPoel from the Tulare-San Joaquin FFA chapter was named the California Star in Agricultural Placement state win-ner. The award recognizes one member with outstanding achievement in a placement supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program and active participation in FFA and the community. This is the high-

est recognition in the nation for a young person excelling in job place-ment in the agricultural industry. VanderPoel works on his family’s dairy operation where he assists his father in managing the business which consists of 1,200 dairy cattle.

California Star in Agriscience:

Jillian Drake from the Fallbrook-Southern FFA chapter was named the California Star in Agriscience state winner. The award recognizes an FFA member with the best agriscience supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program. State finalists compete for this prestigious award, the highest achievement for a person pursuing a career in agriscience. Drake serves as an intern to a citrus facility, conducting research to prevent diseases and invasive species from damaging production.

tive, there is not a lot more you need to do until it is time to train him to show. However, if he is gaining too fast, or is soft to the touch even though he is not fat, then exercise is in order.

Just like with people, exercise helps increase appetite. Being the playful creatures that they are, they often will exercise themselves. But if you need to put them to work then exercise on a track or treadmill is the best way. Remember, we want to build muscle, so sprints are the best exercise. Distance runners are thin, long-muscled athletes. We want the physique of a sprinting track star. It doesn’t take a lot at one time, but it does take a lot of regular repetitions. You can take your goat for walks, but that only helps to develop a partnership with him, not make him muscular.

The final component to a well finished goat is water. It is critical through-out the project that you keep clean fresh water in front of him at all times. You may have heard a judge talk about how fresh a goat handles. This has everything to do with hydration of the skin and muscles. When you

are a week or so out from your target show, add electrolytes to the water. This can be a specially prepared supplement, or as simple as adding Ga-torade. Despite the common misperception that goats eat anything, they are actually quite picky. The fairgrounds is not going to have the same water that you have at home. If you add electrolytes at home (they are all flavored), the goat will become accustomed to the smell, and it will in turn mask the smell of the foreign water. This will keep them drinking and at their peak performance for your big day.

Something I haven’t mentioned in either article, but is a really good habit, watch and make sure your goat urinates every time he gets up. Urinary calculi is common in meat goat wethers. If you see him straining to pee, or go an unusually long time without peeing, take him to the veterinarian ASAP. It is treatable if caught early, and deadly if not.

Good luck and have fun!

If you have questions about my article or any goat question, do not hesitate to email me: [email protected].
