WWELCOMEELCOME Along with the members of the Specialty Show committee, I welcome you to rendezvous with us in Loveland, Colorado for our 2013 Nationals. We look forward to what promises to be an exciting, action packed week. In addition to Conformation, Sweepstakes, and Futurity, we will also offer three draft tests, “official” Obedience and Rally trials, additional “bare bones” trials of each (to give you another opportunity for a qualifying score!), herding and agility trials, and a tracking test. We are thrilled to host the inaugural BMDCA Top Twenty Gala. And you won’t want to miss out on the seminars arranged through Berner-U, which will include a tour of the renowned Colorado State University Veterinary School. All events, other than tracking, will be held at The Larimer County Fairgrounds "The Ranch" and Events Complex adjacent to the host hotel so it will be convenient for you to attend whatever you like. Our host hotel, The Embassy Suites Loveland, is known for their excellent customer service and “pet friendliness.” Loveland, known as “the city with a HeART” is the jewel of Northern Colorado, possessing all of the amenities of an urban population center; yet it still has its small town charm, friendliness, and welcoming atmosphere. Our site offers easy access to downtown Denver, Denver International Airport, Estes Park, and other locations in the Rocky Mountains. Located at 4,982 feet above sea level, the climate is characteristic of higher altitudes with low humidity and intense sunshine. Sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended for all seasons. The average high temperature during the day in May is 71 degrees and the average low temperature at night is 40 degrees - so bring layers. The information in this Planning Booklet will guide you through the scheduled events and provide you with information on how to participate in all of the activities of the Specialty. For those who will be first time attendees, we plan to have “orientation sessions” early in the week to help you navigate through the maze of activities. No matter if you are a past specialty attendee or first timer, we can guarantee this is one rendezvous you will not regret! Dottie Schulte BMDCA 2013 National Specialty Chairman

RRAFFLEAFFLE Raffles and silent auctions are much anticipated and a huge part of the fun of any specialty! We rely upon lots of wonderful donated prizes every year to reach our goal. Theme baskets are always popular, whether filled with state or regional foods and souvenirs, regional club clothing, grooming tools and supplies from local vendors, or dog toys and treats. Other popular items include drafting, agility, obedience and herding equipment, crates, dog show needs (travel crates, dollies, portable chairs), anything Swiss (collars, leads, clothing, clocks, antique bells, horns), dog beds, grooming tables, tubs and dryers, dog portraits, books, gift certificates for catalog items or national chain stores or restaurants and "Bernerabilia" of all sorts. Items that are won are always a treasure to the winner! Due to restrictions this year, please do not include any alcoholic items in your donation (gift cards for such can be accepted). Please consider making a donation to the raffle – on your own or joining forces with friends, local club members, or training groups. Not feeling creative? – we’ll gladly accept your cash donations as well. Monetary donations can be included on the Master Registration or sent separately, made payable to BMDCA 2013. Contributions of all sizes are greatly appreciated! If you will be enjoying the National Specialty 2013, please stop by and shop the Raffle! If you are sending a donated item, please mail/ship it by April 22nd to:

Wendi Meyer 1041 Crest Park Dr Garland, TX 75042

If you plan to bring a donated item to the Specialty (rather than shipping it ahead of time), contact the Raffle Chair in advance at: [email protected] Thank you for your consideration!

CCONFORMATIONONFORMATION EEVENTSVENTS Regular and non-regular conformation, sweepstakes, and futurity classes will be held indoors in the North Exhibition Hall of the First National Bank Building at The Ranch. See premium list for eligibility requirements.

VVERSATILITYERSATILITY SSHOWCASEHOWCASE This stand-alone conformation competition will showcase dogs and bitches that have received the BMDCA Versatility Award. Classes will be offered for Versatility/Versatility Excellent, Dogs/Bitches Under 7 Years and 7 Years and Over, with Best in Versatility chosen from the eight class winners. Intact and altered dogs ARE eligible to compete. Since this showcase is a Special Attraction, dogs or bitches judged first in these classes will NOT be eligible for Best of Breed by virtue of having won these classes. See premium list for eligibility requirements.

IINAUGURALNAUGURAL TTOPOP TTWENTYWENTY GGALAALA The BMDCA 2013 Specialty is excited to host our club's inaugural Top Twenty Competition! To be held Wednesday evening May 15, 2013, this event will showcase the top conformation dogs from 2012. Entry is by invitation only and is sent to the top 20 Bernese Mountain Dogs in breed and all-breed points, as determined by AKC statistics from January 1st through December 31st, 2012. As a spectator, you will have the chance to view the “cream-of-the-crop” in competitive conformation standings. A three-judge panel (who will be kept anonymous until the evening of the event) will simultaneously judge each entrant using a predetermined point system, enumerating criteria of our breed standard. This system gives more concise and detailed opinions for each dog. The emphasis for judging is on individual qualities and how closely each dog conforms to the breed standard. The dogs are judged by the sum of all parts, not just by one outstanding virtue and not by their popularity. The method of scoring limits over-faulting or over-emphasizing specific features. Points will be tabulated once judging is completed and the dog receiving the highest number of points will be the winner of the Top Twenty Competition. In addition, all those attending will have the opportunity to submit their vote for the People’s Choice Award! While judges tabulate their scores and the votes for People’s Choice are tallied, the final judging for Veterans Sweepstakes will take place, spotlighting the first class placers of the individual veteran classes and then selection of our Best in Veteran and Best of Opposite in Veteran Sweepstakes. The Top Twenty Competition will be held at The Ranch in our specialty conformation ring. This gala event will commence at 6:30 PM. There is no fee for spectators to attend, food and drinks (cash bar) will be available for purchase. Judging will begin at 7 PM. There will be an exclusive Top Twenty catalog available for purchase which will feature an individual page with a picture, health information and owner comments for each dog entered. We consider this to be a formal event so, to encourage “proper black tie attire” a three judge panel of Specialty Committee fashionistas will survey the crowd and, using predetermined criteria, will honor the best dressed with a gift certificate to the Spa Botanica at Embassy Suites, offered by Alice Clark. Help make the inaugural BMDCA Top Twenty a success by becoming a donor at one of the following levels: Silver Level - $50; Gold Level - $100; Platinum Level - $200; Diamond Level - $500. For your sponsorship you will receive a unique Pawprint pin to wear at the Top Twenty Gala & recognition along with other generous supporters in our Top Twenty Catalog. Send donations (payable to BMDCA 2013) by April 1st to: Sara Karl, 3106 Westwood Bvld, Colorado Springs, CO 80918.
