E-Book integration

Develop technologies that bring the e-book lending within the experience of the local library

Offer the same functionality for e-books within online catalogs, discovery services, and the library’s general Web presence as offered for print versions

Provide the same level of mastery and control Don’t eject library users to the mercy of

native e-book lending platforms

Page 6: 2013 Midwinter Tech Wrapup: Marshall Breeding

Basic expectations:

Discovery of e-books within the same search results as other library materials Load records for e-books into ILS or discovery service

Display current availability status of e-books and request to be placed in hold queue Real-time interactions with e-book lending platform

Patron can view status of e-book loans from their library account or profile Real-time interactions between e-book lending platform and local ILS

Patrons can activate loan request from library’s own catalog or discovery Ability to fully interact with e-book lending platform via API

Don’t force patrons to have (or know that they have) a separate account for the e-book lending platform or DRM utility Leverage the username and PIN/password used for other library activities

Consistent with ReadersFirst Content Access Requirements http://readersfirst.org/ReadersFirst-Content-Access-Requirements.pdf
