1. While second-year head coach Justin Fuente and the Tigers continue to build a program, the Uni-versity of Memphis takes a step up in competition

this year as the team begins its first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The American Athletic Conference existed as the Big East Conference from 1979 to June 30, 2013. Four of the league’s 10 members won or shared their conference’s regular-season championship last year. Cincinnati, Louisville and Rutgers were part of a four-way tie in the final Big East standings, while UCF won the Conference USA East Division. Half of the league’s mem-bership played in a bowl game last year.

2. Throughout preseason camp as well as the season, the University of Memphis coaching staff emphasizes special teams each day. The Tigers

are coming off a 2012 season in which individuals as well as units were ranked among the nation’s best when it comes to special teams performance. Junior punter Tom Hornsey ranked 19th nationally in punting with a 43.43 yards per punt average. The Tigers’ 38.93 net punting average ranked 28th nationally. Punt returner Keiwone Malone is coming off a sophomore season in which he averaged 11.86 yards per return to rank 19th nationally in 2012. As a unit, Memphis ranked 20th nationally with a 12.0 punt return average. Bobby McCain ranked 24th nationally in kickoff returns with a 25.75 yards per return average. Memphis ranked 19th nationally in kickoff return yardage defense (18.80 yards per return).

3. Paxton Lynch is expected to become the third freshman to start at quarterback for the Uni-versity of Memphis in the past four years. Lynch

redshirted the 2012 season after playing high school football at Trinity Christian Academy in Deltona, Fla. Lynch missed the first half of his senior season with a knee bruise but still registered 2,099 career passing yards at Trinity Christian. In his last competitive game, Lynch passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns in the Central Florida All-State game in December, 2011. He was named the game’s most valuable player.

4. The University of Memphis has teamed up with Kroger to promote the Tigers’ season opener against Duke and support the Million Meals Chal-

lenge. Through game day, Memphis fans can purchase $5 tickets to the Duke game at one of 42 Memphis-area Kroger locations. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Mid-South Food Bank as part of the Million Meals Challenge competition. The Mid-South Food Bank distributed 13 million pounds of food last year. All Kroger $5 tickets are lo-cated in the north end zone (opposite the new video board).

THE DUKE SERIES □ Saturday’s game is only the second gridiron meeting

between the two schools. The Blue Devils won the first encounter between the two programs, a 38-14 victory in Durham, N.C., last season.

LAST MEETING: DUKE 38, MEMPHIS 14 □ Duke quarterback Sean Renfree passed for 314 yards

and four touchdowns and wide receiver Conner Vernon caught eight passes for 120 yards and two scores to lead the Blue Devils to victory. Memphis stayed with Duke in the first half and trailed 17-14 at the break. The Blue Devils defense shutout the Tigers in the second half.

□ Jacob Karam passed for 81 yards, and the Tigers defen-sive trio of Anthony Brown (11 tackles), Charles Harris (11) and Akeem Davis (10) posted double-digit tackles.

AGAINST THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE □ The Tigers have a 14-22-1 record against current Atlantic

Coast Conference members. Memphis has played Duke (0-1), Florida State (7-10-1), Georgia Tech (1-2), Miami (1-2), North Carolina (0-2), Virginia Tech (3-3) and Wake Forest (2-2).

□ Most of the Tigers’ encounters with Florida State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech came when all were either independents or Metro Conference members.

□ Memphis will be looking for its first victory against an ACC team since defeating Georgia Tech 28-15 on Sept. 25, 1981. The victory was the Tigers’ lone win during the 1981 season.

□ The Tigers last win against a charter member of the ACC came in 1967, a 42-10 win over Wake Forest.

FIRST ACC OPPONENT IN MEMPHIS SINCE ... □ It depends on how one looks at the Atlantic Coast

Conference (ACC). As the league is configured now, Duke is the first ACC member to play the Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium since Aug. 31, 1996 when Miami, Fla., posted a 30-7 win over Memphis.

□ However, the last time an ACC charter member played in the Bluff City was nearly 30 years ago when North Carolina visited the Liberty Bowl during the 1984 season. The Tar Heels escaped Memphis with a 30-27 victory over the Tigers on Oct. 27, 1984.

MEMPHIS IN SEASON, HOME OPENERS □ In its history, Memphis has a 36-58-3 record in season

openers. Last year, the Tigers dropped their season open-er to UT Martin 20-17 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Memphis is 2-8 in its last 10 season openers.

□ Memphis has a 44-47-5 record in home openers in the program’s history, including a 5-5 mark in its last 10.

□ The Tigers will be looking for their first season-opening victory since a 20-13 road win at Ole Miss on Sept. 4,

2004. The team’s last home-opening win was a 24-17 win over Middle Tennessee Sept. 18, 2010.

MORE ABOUT HOME OPENERS □ It’s been awhile, but the Tigers are playing their season

opener at home for a third-consecutive year. In addition to the 2013 season opener at home versus Duke, Memphis hosted UT Martin (2012) and Mississippi State (2011) in season openers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

□ The last time Memphis had a season opener at home at least three straight years came during the 1970-73 seasons.

□ And remember last year’s season opener against UT Martin? The game featured a 2:40 delay for lightning (7:58 p.m. to 10:38 p.m.). Between 7:56 and 8:54 p.m., there were 724 lighting strikes within 10 miles of the Liberty Bowl. A second storm cell between 8:54 and 9:46 produced 249 lightning strikes within 10 miles of the stadium. The game was halted with 7:51 to play in the third quarter.

NOT THE LATEST SEASON OPENER, BUT CLOSE □ Let’s call it the fifth-latest season opener in school

history, but it’s been awhile since the Tigers started a season this late. In fact, the last time Memphis had a later season opener was in 1979 when it started that campaign Sept. 8.

□ Since it began playing an 11-game schedule in 1972, Memphis has had only four later season-opening dates.

LATEST SEASON OPENER DATES (SINCE 11-GAME SCHEDULE IN 1972)

Season Date Opponent/Result

1972 Sept. 16 Ole Miss/L, 34-291978 Sept. 9 Ole Miss/L, 14-71979 Sept. 8 Miss. State/W, 14-131973 Sept. 8 Louisville/W, 28-212013 Sept. 7 Duke1974 Sept. 7 Louisville/W, 16-10

ONE OF SIX OF 126 □ Memphis is one of six schools at the Football Bowl

Subdivision (FBS) level that opens play on college football’s second weekend. The other five programs that play their season openers the second weekend are Arizona State, Kansas, Navy, Stanford and UTEP. Arizona State plays its season opener Sept. 5 (Thursday), while the other four schools — along with Memphis — open play Sept. 7.

□ The 2013 season will tie for the longest regular season in terms of days between games for the Memphis Tigers. The last time Memphis had 90 days between the opener and season finale was in 2003.

□ There are 90 days between the Tigers’ opener against Duke on Sept. 7 and the final regular season game Dec. 7 at UConn.

□ Memphis will be the final American Athletic Conference school to open its season. The other nine teams in the league opened their seasons during the first weekend of the season.

THERE’S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING □ Since moving to an 11-game schedule in 1972, Memphis

had opened each season on college football’s opening weekend — until this season.

□ For the first time in recent program history, the Tigers begin a season with an open date.

□ From 1972 through the mid-1980s, the college football season kicked off over two-to-three Saturdays in early September. Beginning in the late 1980s and especially after 1992’s conference realignment, college football’s

big kick-off traditionally has taken place over Labor Day weekend.

MEMPHIS/DUKE TIES □ Tigers fans will see a familiar face on the Duke sideline

Saturday. Blue Devils defensive backs coach Derek Jones served as Memphis’ cornerbacks coach during the 2007 campaign.

□ Jones helped lead the Tigers to a 7-6 record and a 6-2 Conference USA mark. Memphis ended 2007 with a New Orleans Bowl appearance. After the 2007 season, Jones joined David Cutcliffe’s staff at Duke.

CUTCLIFFE VERSUS MEMPHIS □ Although Saturday’s meeting is only the second between

Memphis and Duke, Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe is familiar with the Memphis football program. Cutcliffe has been on the opposing sideline 15 previous times (assistant and head coach) against the Tigers and has a 12-3 record in those encounters.

□ Two of the three Memphis wins against Cutcliffe teams are possibly the biggest in Tigers history — and both came at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The first was in 1996 when Memphis upset Tennessee (Cutcliffe was a Volunteers assistant) 21-17 at the Liberty Bowl. Peyton Manning was the starting quarterback for that Tennessee squad.

□ The next huge Tigers’ victory over a Cutcliffe-coached squad was in 2003. Memphis overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to upset Ole Miss 44-34 at the Liberty Bowl. The Rebels quarterback was Eli Manning.

THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK □ Memphis opens the 2013 season with a three-game

winning streak. The UM program won its final three games as a member of Conference USA by an average of 23 points.

□ To begin the season, Memphis’ three-game winning streak ranked tied for 16th nationally.

BEING WATCHED □ Memphis has two student-athletes who were named

to watch lists prior to the 2013 season. Senior punter Tom Hornsey is on the Ray Guy Award Watch List. Junior defensive end Martin Ifedi is on the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List.

□ Hornsey ranked 19th nationally in 2012 with a 43.43 yards per punt average. During the year he placed 25 of his 60 punts inside opponents’ 20-yard line (42 percent) including 15 inside opponents’ 10. A three-year starter, Hornsey ranks among the nation’s leaders in career punts (235) and punting yards (10,015). He has a career 42.62 yard punting average.

□ Ifedi led Memphis in tackles for lost yards (11 for -51 yards) and quarterback sacks (7.5 for -41 yards).

□ Memphis did not have a quarterback sack through the first three games of the 2012 season before Ifedi’s sack of Duke quarterback Sean Renfree the fourth week of the year.

DEFENSIVE LINE DEPTH □ Memphis’ strength in 2013 maybe its defensive line. The

Tigers returning student-athletes accounted for every start on the interior defensive line last year.

□ With the addition of Nebraska junior transfer Chase Rome, the Tigers have moved Terry Redden from nose tackle to starter at one of the defensive end positions. Rome begins the season behind senior Johnnie Farms at nose tackle. Farms and Redden shared the starting role and split time at nose tackle last season.

□ With Ifedi returning at defensive end, Memphis has moved senior Corey Jones, a nine-game starter at one defensive end position last year, to the Dawg position. The Tigers’ Dawg position is a hybrid defensive end/linebacker position.

□ Ifedi was the leading tackler on the defensive line in 2012, finishing with 46 total tackles. Farms registered 38

tackles including 9.5 for lost yards and 2.5 quarterback sacks. Reden had 28 tackles including 6.5 for loss and two sacks.

DEFENSIVE STATISTICAL LEADERS RETURN □ In addition to the numbers put up by the defensive line,

Memphis returns its two leading tacklers in linebackers Charles Harris and Anthony Brown. Lonnie Ballentine returns for his senior season at safety and was the team’s leader in interceptions a year ago.

□ Harris led the Tigers with 79 total tackles. He registered double-digit tackles in three of the Tigers’ first four games including 11 stops against Duke.

□ Brown was second on the squad with 71 total tackles. He also had 11 tackles in last year’s game against the Blue Devils.

□ Ballentine had three interceptions, including two against UT Martin in the 2012 season opener. Ballentine also had five pass breakups in 2012 to lead the Tigers.

DISSECTING THE DEFENSE □ Of the 22 players on the Tigers’ defensive two deep,

11 are returners with starting experience – FS Lonnie Ballentine, LB Anthony Brown, NT Johnnie Farms, LB Charles Harris, CB Bakari Hollier, DE Ricky Hunter, DAWG Corey Jones, DE Martin Ifedi, CB Bobby McCain, LB Wynton McManis and DE Terry Redden.

□ The 16 returning lettermen on the Tigers’ defensive two deep represent the core group of a defensive unit which led Conference USA in total defense in league games played, giving up just 331.6 yards per game. Memphis lowered its total yardage allowed in conference games from the previous season by 30 percent. The Tigers were ranked 10th in Conference USA in total defense in 2011.

□ Memphis’ defense allowed just 102.6 yards rushing in conference games in 2012, second-best in the conference and the team’s 229.0 pass defense total during league play also ranked second.

□ For the year, Memphis ranked 50th nationally in defense (383.58 yards per game). The Tigers made a 67-position improvement from the 2011 season when they ranked 117th with a 491.00 total defense average.

□ Memphis’ 138-yard rushing defense total for the year ranked 32nd nationally. Memphis ranked 97th national in rushing defense in 2011.

□ Memphis ranked last nationally in pass defense for the 2011 season, giving up 299.42 yards per game. The Tigers

gave up just 245.58 yards passing in 2012 and made a 44-spot improvement (76th).

□ After not having a quarterback sack in the first three games of the season, Memphis ranked third in Conference USA in sacks, averaging 2.42 per game. For the season, Memphis ranked 38th nationally in quarter-back sacks.

□ The Tigers more than doubled the number of quarter-back sacks it had in 2012 (29) from the 2011 season (14).

OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT □ In Conference USA games, Memphis raised its total

offense total from 243.0 yards per game to 327.1 yards an outing (26 percent increase in yardage from 2011 to 2012). In C-USA games, Memphis raised its rushing offense total by 63 percent.

□ Memphis averaged 318.33 yards of total offense during the 2012 season. The season total represented a 44-yard improvement from the 2011 season.

□ Memphis ranked next to last in rushing offense in 2011 but almost doubled its rushing average during the 2012 season, improving its rushing total to 151.75 yards per game in 2012.

ROOKIE QUARTERBACKS □ Redshirt freshman Paxton Lynch has been named the

starting quarterback for the Tigers. Lynch is expected to become the first freshman to begin a season at quarter-back since Andy Whitewell opened the 1986 season as the starting quarterback against Ole Miss (Sept. 6, 1986).

□ Against Ole Miss in the ‘86 opener, Whitewell completed 8-of-11 passes for 56 yards before suffering a shoulder separation in the second quarter.

□ Lynch is also expected to become the first starting rookie quarterback in a game since true freshman Taylor Reed started nine games during the 2011 season.

□ Reed’s first start of the 2011 season came in the second game of the season.

□ Memphis head coach Justin Fuente certainly has a unique perspective and insight in starting a freshman quarterback.

□ As a freshman at the University of Oklahoma, Fuente took over the starting quarterback job for the Sooners

THE GROUND GAME □ Memphis returns two running backs who accounted

for a bulk of the squad’s rushing yards in 2012. Seniors Brandon Hayes and Jai Steib combined for 1,003 of the team’s 1,821 net rushing yards (55 percent).

□ Hayes, originally a walkon who saw his first playing time last year at Duke, led the Tigers in rushing yardage with 576 yards on 118 carries. He had 20 yards on two carries against the Blue Devils last year.

□ Steib rushed for 427 yards on 119 carries. His six rushing touchdowns was a teamw high. Three of his scores came over the course of the Tigers’ three-game win streak to end the season.

FRESHMAN PLAYING TIME □ Named starting quarterback Paxton Lynch is one of 12

freshmen who are listed on the Tigers’ two deep. Among the dozen are six true freshmen – WR Sam Craft, LB Jackson Dillon, PK Jake Elliot, LS Trevor Morgan, Holder Evan Michael and PK Spencer Smith.

□ Memphis played 10 freshmen in last year’s season open-er against UT Martin including three true freshman.

KOR TD: IT’S BEEN AWHILE □ Memphis enters the 2013 season having gone 179

straight games without returning a kickoff for a touch-down. The Tigers’ last return of a kickoff for a score came Nov. 9, 1996 when Kevin Cobb returned a kickoff 95 yards tying the game at 14. The played earned Cobb an ESPN ESPY.

□ Memphis kickoff returner Bobby McCain almost broke that streak last year at Duke. McCain had a 95-yard return to the Duke five in the second quarter.

□ McCain set a school single-game record with the highest kickoff return average (43.7 yards per return) against Duke. For the year, McCain averaged 25.75 yards per kickoff return to rank 24th nationally.

AND HOW ABOUT PUNT RETURNS FOR SCORES?

□ Tevin Jones was actually credited with a punt return touchdown in the second game of the 2012 season when

he pounced on the ball in the end zone after a blocked punt at Arkansas State.

□ The last time Memphis had a returner score on a punted ball was Oct. 16, 2004 when Darron White returned a punt 60 yards early in the first quarter of the Tulane game. The score came after Tulane was forced to punt following its first drive and gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead en route to a 49-24 victory.

□ Memphis has gone 104 games without a return man taking a punt back for a touchdown.

HEAD COACH JUSTIN FUENTE □ In his first season as coach of the Tigers, Justin Fuente

laid the groundwork for a University of Memphis football team which is taking a step up in competition during his second year, the team’s first in the American Athletic Conference.

□ In Fuente’s first season, the Tigers posted their best finish since 2008 and won more conference games than the previous three season combined.

□ Memphis posted a 4-8 overall record and was 4-4 in league play in the final season as a member of Conference USA in 2012.

□ The Tigers’ efforts last year did not go unnoticed. Athlon Sports’ College Football Preview Magazine had Fuente No. 5 in the publication’s ranking of new coaches for 2012.

TIGER COACHING STAFF RETURNS □ Memphis is one of 18 FBS schools to return its entire

coaching staff from the 2012 season – Akron, Baylor, Boise State, Buffalo, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis,

early in the 1996 season.

□ Fuente threw for 1,271 yards and eight touchdowns in his rookie season.

SOUND DECISIONS ON THE FIELD □ Memphis set a single season record and ranked tied for

second nationally, as Tiger signal callers combined to throw just three interceptions in 2012.

□ Army led the nation last year, throwing just two intercep-tions. Memphis tied with Alabama and Pittsburgh for the second fewest picks during the season.

□ It is relatively a slight number, but the Tigers begin the 2013 season having not thrown an interception in the team’s last 46 passing attempts (10 straight quarters without an interception). The mark dates back to the second quarter of the 2012 Tulane game.

NEW CONSISTENCY AT QB □ Under then, first-year head coach Justin Fuente, the

Tigers had the same starting quarterback for all 12 games during the 2012 season – Jacob Karam. But prior to Fuente’s arrival, the Tigers had their share of starting signal callers.

□ Not since 2004 has Memphis had the same starting quarterback. In helping lead the Tigers to an 8-4 record in 2004, senior Danny Wimprine started all 12 games.

□ Prior to Jacob Karam starting all 12 games of the 2012 season, Memphis had started 14 different quarterbacks from 2005 to 2011. In fact, since the Tigers’ last bowl

Minnesota, Navy, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Rice, Toledo, Tulane, Tulsa and Vanderbilt.

□ Only two schools – Minnesota and Northwestern have kept the same coaching staff intact for three seasons. Minnesota went from 3-9 in Jerry Kill’s first season as head coach in 20111 to 6-7 in 2012. The Golden Gophers advanced to a bowl game for the first time since 2009. Northwestern went from a 6-7 record and 33-22 loss to Texas A&M in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in 2011 to 10-3 and 34-20 victors over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl in 2012.

THE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL □ It can be difficult with a team of more than 100

student-athletes to make sure everyone stays focused and moving towards the same goal. The University of Memphis football team’s Leadership Council is entering its second year under head coach Justin Fuente and the members of the council stand as examples to the rest of the team the expectations for Tiger Football.

□ “I expect them to represent all the things we are building this program on at all times. That is a pretty high expecta-tion level but I also bestow a lot of nice rewards on those guys so I expect them to live up to those expectations.” – Head Coach Justin Fuente

□ There were 10 Leadership Council members for the 2012 season and four return this season – LB Charles Harris, DB Bakari Hollier, QB Jacob Karam & DB Bobby McCain.

□ For 2013, the Leadership Council consists of 13 mem-bers. Making up the balance of this year’s council is OL Al Bond, TE Alan Cross, OL Antonio Foster, WR Mose Frazier, RB Brandon Hayes, P Tom Hornsey, QB Paxton Lynch, LB Wynton McManis, DL Terry Redden.

GRADUATE STUDIES □ Both Jacob Karam, senior by athletic eligibility standards,

and junior Chase Rome received their undergraduate degrees from other institutions and transferred to the University of Memphis with two years of eligibility.

□ Karam graduated from Texas Tech University in December, 2011, and transferred to Memphis. In his first season as a Tiger, Karam started all 12 games in 2012, completing 176-of-274 passes for 1895 yards and 14 touchdowns.

□ Rome joined the Tigers the first full week of camp after graduating from the University of Nebraska with a degree in sociology last month. Rome started three games as a sophomore at Nebraska, recording 19 total tackles and a quarterback hurry during the season.

AFCA & NATIONAL FOOTBALL FOUNDATION NOMINEE

□ Jacob Karam is both a nominee for the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® as well as the National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Awards.

□ Allstate Insurance Company has teamed with the American Football Coaches Association to become the title sponsor of the award which honors football student-athletes for exemplary community service. Two, 11-man teams are selected, one team from the Football Bowl Subdivision and a second combined from the FCS, NCAA Division II and III and NAIA. Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a char-itable organization, service group or community service as well as maintain good grades.

□ Nominees for the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards must be in their final year of playing eligibility, maintain a 3.2 GPA, show superior academic application and performance, show outstanding football ability as a starter/significant contributor and have demonstrated outstanding school leadership and citizenship.

TIGERS IN OVERTIME GAMES □ Memphis has been involved in six overtime games,

the last coming in the 2009 season finale at Tulsa. The

2013 NCAA/COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFICIATE RULES AND NOTES

SAFETY RULES: TARGETINGRule 9-1-3: Targeting and Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet

□ No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

Rule 9-1-4: Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player

□ No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul.

Key Notes for 2013

□ The fouls have not changed from 2012 – only the penalty, which now includes an automatic ejection.

□ First half fouls: Ejection for the remainder of the game.

□ Second-half fouls: Ejection for the remainder of the game and the first half of the next game.

□ Instant Replay has the authority only to review the contact itself. If the video clearly shows that the contact was not with the crown of the helmet or was not the head/neck area, a targeting foul may be downgraded to unnecessary roughness. The 15-yard enforcement remains regardless.

SAFETY RULES: BLOCKING BELOW THE WAISTRule 9-1-6: Blocking below the waist

□ Establishes a zone for the offense that extends seven yards from the snapper toward each sideline and goes five yards into the defensive secondary and in the other directions all the way back to the offensive team’s end line. Within this zone, an offensive back who is stationary inside the tackle bock and an offensive lineman inside the seven-yard zone may legally block below the waist until the ball has left the zone. Everyone else on the offensive team may legally block below the waist only if the block is clearly to the front of the opponent. This only-from-the-front rule also holds true for everyone of the offensive team once the ball has left the zone. In addition, no one on the offense is allowed to block below the waist if the block is directed toward his own end line.

CLOCK MANAGEMENT RULESRule 3-2-5: Minimum time for a play after spiking

□ Teams will need a minimum of three seconds from the referee’s signal to “spike” the ball to allow for another play at the end of a half. Teams must still execute the spike, but they will have a reasonable opportunity for another play. If the clock shows one or two seconds, they will only have enough time to run a play without first spiking the ball.

Rule 3-3-5: 10-second runoff after a player injury

□ In 2013, if a player is injured within the last minute of a half, and this is the only reason for stopping the clock, the opponent may choose to have 10 seconds subtracted from the game clock. The injured player’s team can preserve the 10 seconds by using a timeout.

2013 NCAA/COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFICIATE RULES AND NOTES (CONT.)

Rule 3-3-9: Helmet off: Timeout allows player to remain in game

□ The rule requiring a player to leave the game for one down if his helmet comes off has been modified to allow a player to remain in the game if his team is granted a charged timeout to adjust the player’s helmet.

PLAYERS’ NUMBERING RULESRule 1-4-2: Players entering game wearing new number must report

□ If a team wants to use a player at two different positions during the game, and they need to change numbers, the player must report to the referee who will in turn announce the change. In addition, two players who play the same position at different times in the game may not wear the same number during the game. For example, two quarterbacks may not both wear number 12.

Golden Hurricane defeated the Tigers 33-30 on Nov. 27, 2009.

□ Prior to the Tulsa game, Memphis’ previous overtime game was against SMU and decided in three overtime periods. A 55-52 win over the Mustangs is currently the Tiger’s lone overtime victory. Memphis has played just one other multi-overtime game, a three-overtime affair against Houston during the 2000 season.

TIGERS IN THE NFL □ The University of Memphis has five players who have

made NFL rosters ahead of the 2013 season open-ers – New England Patriots PK Stephen Gostkowski, Dallas Cowboys OL Ronald Leary, Kansas City Chiefs DL Dontari Poe, Houston Texans OL Wade Smith & Charlotte Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams.

□ All five former Memphis players are expected to start at their respective positions.

□ The coming week’s games involving former Memphis players are Nw England at Buffalo; Kansas City at Jacksonville; Seattle at Charlotte; New York Giants at Dallas all on Sunday. Houston plays at San Diego Monday night.

ABOUT THE LIBERTY BOWL □ The University of Memphis football program is fortunate

to have one of the finest facilities to play its home games. Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, “built by the citizens of Memphis,” is a memorial to veterans of World War I, World War II and the Korean War. The stadium, which seats 59,308 following the latest renovations, was built in 1965 at a cost of $3.7 million by the city of Memphis. It is operated by the Memphis Park Services Department.

□ The Tigers inaugurated the stadium in the fall of 1965 and in 48 years, have compiled a 146-135-7 record in the Liberty Bowl.

□ The centerpiece of 2012 renovations was a $2.5 million video scoreboard and sound system. A generous donated provided by FedEx to the U of M paved the way for the video board/speaker system upgrades.

□ The renovations have continued in 2013 with updates which have brought the facility up to ADA standards.

BAND CAMP □ As head coach Justin Fuente addressed the team

following its final two-a-day practice on Aug. 21st, the University of Memphis’ Mighty South of the South band marched onto the practice fields at the Murphy Athletic Complex. The band closed out the practice day with a set of music for the team. The performance was the blending of two groups who put in hours on the practice fields during the month of August.

□ Last year Fuente implemented a new tradition as the Tigers now face the student section in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium to sing the fight song after every victory.

CELEBRATING THE 1963 TEAM □ Members of the 1963 Memphis Tiger football team, and

assorted players from that era, will gather this weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their undefeated season. The team will be introduced to fans during the Memphis-Duke season opener.

□ The 1963 roster was filled with names of legendary play-ers who helped carry Coach Billy J. Murphy’s squad to an undefeated season and a final No. 14 national ranking. The lone blemish on the ’63 schedule, if it could be called a blemish, was a 0-0 tie against No. 3-ranked Ole Miss at

Crump Stadium in Memphis. Ole Miss was the defending National Champions.

□ Among the players expected to return for the reunion are All-American tight end Chuck Brooks, quarterback/punter Olie Cordill, linebacker John Bramlett, defensive linemen Richard Adragna, Richard Saccoccia and Bob Finamore, quarterback Billy Fletcher, offensive linemen Don McKinnon, Dick Quast and ends Bob Sherlag, Reg Sharley and Wiley Patterson.

THE BULL □ John Bramlett, who played for the Tigers from 1959-62,

will have his No. 64 Tiger jersey retired during the Duke game. A native Memphian, Bramlett came to the University of Memphis in 1959 under former head football coach Billy J. Murphy and became a mainstay in Murphy’s building a nationally-recognized and ranked football program.

□ During Bramlett’s playing time with the Tigers football team, Memphis posted an overall record of 30-9 and gained the University’s first win in school history over a Southeastern Conference opponent, a 28-7 road victory over Mississippi State in Starkville. Over a three-year span from 1960-62, the Tigers defense allowed an average of just 9.4 points per game, while averaging 37.3 on offense.

□ A member of the University of Memphis M Club and the Tennessee Hall of Fame, Bramlett was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and played three professional seasons before giving pro football a shot. He signed a contract with the Denver Broncos in 1965.

□ Bramlett was the AFL Rookie of the Year runnerup behind Joe Namath. He was a Pro Bowl selection for Denver in 1996. He was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 1967 and made another Pro Bowl appearance before going to the New England Patriots in 1963. Bramlett was named the Most Valuable Player for the Patriots in 1970. He finished his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 1971.

ON THIS DATE □ The Tigers have a 1-3-1 record in Sept. 7 games in their

history. The last time Memphis played a Sept. 7 game was in the 2002 season, and the Tigers dropped a 38-16 decision to Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.

□ Memphis’ lone Sept. 7 victory was a 16-10 win over rival Louisville in the 1974 season.
