GAME 1Mississippi State 17, Memphis 3

Sept. 2, 2000; Memphis TN

GAME REVIEWS18

Memphis, TNMemphis, TNMemphis, TNMemphis, TNMemphis, TN - The play of the Univer-sity of Memphis and Mississippi State de-fenses matched record, Mid-South tempera-tures in both teams season opener, a 17-3 Bull-dog victory in the Liberty Bowl.

After a week of record temperatures inMemphis, the season opener played in front of34,113 began with the temperature again hov-ering near the century mark.

State came into the 2000 football cam-paign as the defending Division I statisticalleader in total defense and shutdown the U ofMs offensive attack. The Memphis defensewas also impressive, limiting MississippiStates offense to just 127 total yards, almost200 yards below the Bulldogs 1999 total of-fense average (323.8 ypg).

Mississippi States three scoring drives, which were set up by three of the Tigers fiveturnovers, went for minus-two, 25 and sixyards.

On Memphiss first series of the secondquarter Tiger quarterback Travis Anglins third-down pass was intercepted by MSUs FredSmoot near midfield and returned 24 yards tothe Memphis 24.

Junior defensive end Tony Brown stoppedBulldog running back Dicenzo Miller after aone-yard gain on first down and following anincomplete pass, tackled MSU quarterbackWayne Madkin for a three-yard loss. Brownled the Tigers with eight tackles, including twofor losses.

Mississippi State settled for a 43-yard fieldgoal by Scott Westerfield to take a 3-0 leadwith 10:53 remaining in the first half.

Darche Eptings 24-yard return and a 15-yard personal foul penalty tagged on the end ofthe ensuing kickoff gave the Tigers their bestfield possession of the game, starting at theState 41. It was the only time a Memphis drivebegan on the short side of midfield.

MSUs Toby Golliday sacked Anglin onthird-and-six and the Tigers were forced topunt.

The Bulldogs Mario Haggan interceptedan Anglin pass on the Tigers next drive, returning the ball seven yards to the U of M 25.

Madkin picked up 12 yards on a third-and-11 from the Tiger 26. Miller hauled in an eight-yard pass from Madkin to move the ball inside10 and following a five-yard Miller run, DontaeWalker punched it in from the one as Missis-sippi State took a 10-0 lead with 3:47 to play in

the half.Memphiss longest drive led to the Tigers

only points just before the end of the first half.Ryan Whites 36-yard field goal with six

seconds to play in the half capped a 15-play,62-yard drive.

Anglin had a hand in picking up all four ofthe Tigers first downs on the drive, includingthree, third-down conversions after Memphishad failed on its previous five, third-downattempts. The sophomore quarterback ran for12 yards on third-and-11 from the 19. Hewould complete a 14-yard pass to Ryan Johnsonon third-and-six from the 35. Later, an 11-yardAnglin run moved the ball into State territorywhile a 10-yard pass on third-and-10 from the40 put the ball into Whites field goal range.

Neither offense could muster much in thethird quarter.

But in the fourth, it looked as if the Tigerdefense had changed the momentum withabout nine minutes to play in the game. WithMississippi State facing second-and-four fromits own 43, Madkin began to drop back and washit by Andre Arnold forcing the ball to theground. U of M linebacker Kamal Shakirpicked up the apparent fumble and didnt stopuntil he crossed the goal line. Despite instantreplay showing the ball obviously being fumbled, the play was ruled down by the SoutheasternConference officiating crew and Arnold wascredited with one of his three quarterbacksacks on the day.

Memphis had one last offensive opportu-nity after the defense once again came up witha big play. Mississippi State faced third-and-one from its 23 with less than three minutes toplay when Calvin Lewis stopped Miller for nogain, forcing the Bulldogs to punt.

With 2:08 to play, backup quarterback NeilSuber entered the game for the second timeafter Anglin was sacked for a four-yard loss.A false start penalty moved the ball back to the21 where the Tigers faced fourth-and-17. Suberwas sacked by Haggan, fumbling on the playat the six.

Haggan had 12 tackles, two sacks anddeflected a pair of passes in addition to hisinterception which led to the Bulldogs firsttouchdown.

Miller would score from six yards out onthe Bulldogs next play and take a 17-3 leadwith 1:55 remaining.

Anglin finished the game 8-of-27 for 66yards and netted 32 of the Tigers 87 rushingyards. Mississippi State was held to 45 yardsrushing on 35 attempts (1.3 yards per carry).Miller led the Bulldogs with 31 yards on 11carries.
