SoftballMaryville College fighting Scots Season Preview 2012-13

Maryville College Head Softball Coach Kim Woodard is excited to begin her fourth season with the challenge of a new league affiliation. As the Softball Scots prepare for the USA South and a tough spring schedule, her 16 player squad is the biggest and most talented during her brief tenure.

Six standouts will roam the outfield for Maryville in 2013. Jennie Burks (Collierville, TN) and Ashley Braley (Colorado Springs, CO) will work in left field. Braley is a collegiate rookie and Burks earned just under 100 at-bats as a freshman last season. Burks has the ability to get on base consistently and committed only one error in 91 chances last season. Centerfield will be patrolled by Taylor Dockery (Maryville, TN) and Emily Surrett (Marble, NC). Surrett is in her first season and had a strong fall showing. Dockery finished her sophomore campaign hitting .322 in 90 at-bats. She has an excellent first step in the outfield and did not commit an error in centerfield last season. She led the Scots in sacrifices with a dozen from the second spot in last year’s lineup. Rightfield will feature a pair of key sluggers in MC’s strong offensive unit. Hannah Youngdeer (Cherokee, NC) has proven to be a strong RBI producer. Youngdeer earned All-Great South honors last season after hitting .385 as a freshman. She had nine doubles and a pair of homeruns to sport a .496 slugging percentage.

Coach Woodard is two deep at each infield position. Her Scots posted a .947 fielding percentage in 2012 and has goals of .950 or better this spring. Kalyn Jones (Brown Summit, NC) and Caitlin Cox (Seviervile, TN) will man the hot corner in 2013. Jones, a sophomore, hit .182 in 88 at-bats in her first collegiate season while fielding at an .831 clip. Cox has a strong and consistent bat and will find her way into the lineup in a variety of roles. Replacing a two-time All-GSAC shortstop in Leah Kelley will be no easy task for Coach Woodard and her staff. Three talented freshmen are eager to display their skills at . Miranda Miller (Gainesville, GA), Megan Mihaliak (Hendersonville, TN), and Kayla Aloisi (Oliver Springs, TN) will look to lead MC from the shortstop position. Miller has above average speed and the defensive range to get to any ball. She has the ability to get on base and make things happen. Triple threats Miller, Mihaliak, and Aloisi are also athletic enough to excel on the mound for the next four seasons for the Scots. Kelsie Payne (White House, TN) and Emilie Craven (Murphy, NC) will be a dual threat at second base. Payne, a junior, is very athletic and is making the transition from the outfield

last season. She hit .222 in a limited role as a junior after excelling on MC’s soccer pitch as a freshman. Craven had a strong fall campaign and will push for substantial playing time as she gains experience. Firstbase will be patrolled by Lexi Randolph (Gordonsville, TN), Corey Hairrell (Corryton, NC), and Kelci Swafford (Mt. Juliet, TN). Hairrell hit .210 in 62 at-bats as a freshman while Randloph battled through injuries last season and still posted a .545 average in 11 at-bats.

MC will return Andrea Brew (Colorado Springs, CO) behind the plate for her senior season. Brew hit

.313 in 80 at-bats and committed only five errors in over 180 chances. She also threw out 21 runners attempting to steal. A trio of standouts will also push Brew to excel. Jennie Burks, and Kalyn Jones can all come from different defensive positions and take over behind the plate.

The mound will see one of the most talented and deep pitching staffs in the 2000’s. Freshman Kayla Aloisi (Oliver Springs, TN), Megan Mihaliak, Lexi Randolph, and Corey Hairrell will anchor the hurler’s efforts this spring. Randolph and Hairrell have collegiate experience and can come in from their defensive positions to shut down the opponent at anytime. The duo of sophomores combined for 18 appearances and 41 innings of work in 2012 and opponents hit a combined .280 against the pair.

Coach Woodard is excited to welcome a pair of experienced coaches to help her develop her players in 2013. Caitlin Bryan will assist in the development of the pitchers and catchers. Bryan was a standout catcher for both Belhaven University and Emmanuel during her collegiate career. Lacey Williams, a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College, will volunteer her skills in developing the outfielders. She helped the Bulldogs to conference titles in 2005 and 2006 and has

assisted at William Blount High School for a pair of seasons.

The schedule begins with a traditional challenge at the Emory Classic on February 9th. Strong non-conference challenges against Birmingham Southern, Berry, and Covenant will prepare the Scots for a tough inaugural USA South campaign beginning on March 2nd when MC hosts Piedmont.
