I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s Awards Luncheon for Variety Village.

In addition to its programming in therapeutic recreation, Variety Village is a world-class sport and fitness training facility, providing adapted programs for people with disabilities and other at-risk individuals. This focus on inclusion and adapting sport and recreation activities to meet the needs of people with all kinds of disabilities, whether physical or cognitive, provides real leadership in our community.

Earlier this year, Variety Village launched the Stroke Recovery Program to provide support to post-rehab stroke survivors and give respite to their caregivers. We are proud to support this three-year pilot program, which is improving the quality of life for people in our communities, and we are honoured to receive the Outstanding Corporate Award for our role.

Scotiabank is committed to supporting the communities where we live and work, worldwide and closer to home, through our global philanthropic program, Scotiabank Bright Future – which includes a significant focus on health. Through this program, we respond to community needs at the grassroots level because that’s where we believe we can have the greatest impact.

I would also like to acknowledge the two other award recipients -- both outstanding individuals and volunteers -- who are also being recognized today: Bill Phelan, Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award recipient, and Jeff Tiessen, Spirit Award recipient. I’d like to thank everyone here today for supporting Variety Village. Your generosity has a strong and lasting impact.

As Honourary Luncheon Patron I am excited to welcome you to this year’s Awards Luncheon for Variety Village.

In Canada, currently only 3% of our youth with disabilities participate in regular fitness activity. Variety Village, is committed to ensuring that those who wish to participate in sports and fitness aren’t left on the sidelines.

Variety’s programming involves children at an early age, introducing many more young athletes to sport for life, building confidence and providing a springboard for elite athlete development. Sport plays an important part in our culture and this drive to develop the next generation of elite Canadian athletes, while providing tiered programming to engage the maximum number of our kids, is awe-inspiring.

As someone who has championed sport in Canada throughout my - both at the professional and community leve - this vision of identifying and supporting children with special needs is not only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. As the past President of MLSE I am proud of our partnership with Variety Village. We have and continue to support their work through investments, which we know have a significant impact on the community. Our shared vision has created real and lasting change and fostered a sense of community for many individuals who need it most.

Thanks to all of the attendees for supporting Variety Village today, and a special and heartfelt thank you and congratulations to each of the award winners for their leadership and commitment.

Sincerely,

Mr. Tom Anselmi Honourary Luncheon Patron andPast President, MLSE

First, thank you for joining Variety Village at its second Fall Luncheon. Your attendance is very much a tribute to our exceptional honourees: Jeff Tiessen, Bill Phelan and Scotiabank.

Second, let this luncheon be just the beginning of our association. l invite you to continue our conversation by visiting Variety Village and experiencing its contagious culture of connectivity and courage.

Our staff, volunteers, athletes, members and families connect in ways you can only imagine. They help one another. They encourage each other to push the limits of their abilities. And, perhaps most significantly, they connect within an atmosphere of acceptance and trust. They find support from those around them who do the same and from an incredibly talented, dedicated staff who see the world as a place where everyone counts and deserves their attention.

Many of our members simply want to improve their fitness levels. Others hope to make it to a Paralympic podium one day. Whatever goals they set, Variety Village is where they first dream about them and are encouraged to strive for them. At Variety Village, they’ll find acceptance and, ultimately, success.

Thank you sincerely for the support of our loyal patrons, sponsors and volunteers. Your generosity has, and will continue to have, a positive impact on the work we do to help improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Mike Strobel is a general columnist for the Toronto Sun and a veteran newspaper writer and editor. But the loftiest gig of his press career may have been his first, paper boy for Parliament Hill, a job that paid for a near-degree in journalism from Carleton University.

Born on a tobacco farm near Tillsonburg, Strobel has lived mostly in the east end of Toronto, especially Scarborough. You need a rugged sense of humour to survive in that suburb, which is why comic actor Mike "Austin Powers" Myers, for instance, is the way he is. Strobel has since fled downtown, fending off panhandlers, geeks and poodles in designer sweaters.

This has not slowed his output of at least four columns a week in the up-front news pages of the Sun, efforts which have won a dozen newspaper awards and millions of hits on the Sun's Website. Strobel's columns are an offbeat look at life on the streets and in the living rooms of Toronto and beyond. Mostly they make you laugh, but sometimes they make you rage and sometimes they make you cry. They offer skewed wisdom on the likes of love, weight loss and male enhancement. They cover City Hall, Hollywood and hockey, scammers, panhandlers and swingers.

In the 1980s and 90s, after starting at the Ottawa Journal, Strobel was managing editor or editor-in-chief of the Sunpapers in Calgary and Toronto, before coming to his senses and returning to writing in 2001. A collection of columns, Bad Girls - And Other Perils, was published in December 2010.

One of Canada’s best known Paralympic athletes, Jeff Tiessen, a double arm amputee, medaled in three consecutive Summer Paralympic Games, including a still current world record setting performance in 400m track in Seoul, South Korea in 1988.

Since 1992, the award-winning journalist and disability advocate has been President of DT Publishing, publishers of Play to Podium. As a book and magazine publisher, Jeff’s work focuses on providing kids with special needs with tools and ideas for healthy, active living.

As executive producer of the Disability Today Network, he has created a one-of-a-kind online information village for the greater disability community.

An award-winning journalist and inductee into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame, Jeff is a respected advocate and highly sought-after public speaker and leadership trainer.

In Bill’s business career his entrepreneurial ventures stem from chemical manufacturing and include working in various sectors: real estate, hotels and motels, armed guard security, contract cleaning, jewellery manufacturing, in addition to several other businesses.

In his volunteer life, he has been Chairman of the Board of Riverdale Hospital, the President of the Board of Seven Oakes, the Chairman of the Board of Good Sheppard Refuge, the Public Relations Director of Providence Health Centre, Member of the Board of The Fred Victor Mission, President of St. Paul’s Credit Union (40 years), to name just a few.

Bill was introduced to Variety the Children’s Charity back in 1977 by a business associate and good friend Ken McGowan, owner and President of Mac’s Milk. At that time Bill’s role at Variety was focused on fund raising events such as the annual Variety Telethon and he held the special position of Sergeant at Arms. He coordinated the opening season lunches for the Toronto Blue Jays in addition to several events at Variety Village, namely the Lieutenant Governor Games.

Bill generously moved into becoming an even more prominent figure at Variety Village, driven by his desire to help the kids. He took on a significant role in assisting with fundraising but mainly with the Wheelchair Repair program. All wheelchairs needing repairs were stored in a room that over time were piled high to the ceiling and became of no use. Bill took on the project of involving his Toronto East Rotary Club (of which Bill is the Chartered President) and the Toronto Police to repair and replace wheelchair parts that allowed the chairs to be put back into use. This program has been in existence for over 10 years and the value of repairs and maintenance is over four million dollars worth of chairs back into circulation.

Bill is a strong family man, with 6 children and 8 grandchildren and has been married to his wife, Patricia, for 66 years. At the age of 91 years, Bill continues to coordinate and support the wheelchair program.

Bill Phelan is one of Toronto’s premier community activists, fundraisers and supporters of many charities such as Variety Village, Variety Club of Canada, and Toronto East Rotary.
