When we find out the story each artist

was trying to tell, we learn to appreciate and admire that piece of artwork so much more. Let’s take that time to listen to our students and learn their stories.

Henry S. Moore said, “To be an artist is to believe in life.” Well, to be in activities is to believe in students. The 2013 CADA Convention will give us the artistic tools to believe. There will be time to network with other artists, learn from amazing inspirational speakers, and attend outstanding workshops that will all help us connect students, mold leaders and produce masterpieces of our own.

Workshop Training - The Fine Art of CADA is it’s training and networking. The conference will feature over 90 workshop sessions with training for incorporating more of the student body into your school culture (including EL, Special Ed and at-risk students) with ideas for your entire educational team. Activities Directors, administrators, class advisors, and finance clerks will all benefit from the plethora of topics offered.

New To Convention - Upon your arrival Wednesday from 1:00-4:00pm we invite you to visit the New to Convention Concierge Room where we will welcome you and help provide you advice and tips to develop a plan to help you navigate the convention. At 4:30pm on Wednesday afternoon be sure to attend the New to Convention Orientation/Download. This highly interactive session is the perfect way to get introduced to CADA. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and connect with other new CADA members in this valuable networking opportunity.

Leadership Lessons for Leadership Development - (Thursday 2:40pm-3:30pm) Taking 10-15 minutes of a class period to teach a concept or specific skill can save you hours in the weeks to come. Invest in this session and come away with four new lessons and countless other ideas that will spur you on to the possibilities that lessons can help.

Featuring 60-60 - This fast paced session has been a winner three years in a row. Friday from 3:30pm-4:30pm Sixty Tips in Sixty Minutes (or 60-60) will keep your attention as ideas are provided that will change parts of your program... six CADA experts will each give a variety of tips. Hear tips on how to create a positive school climate with topics including (but not limited to): training your leaders, giving leaders a voice, providing common experiences on your campus, creating pride and spirit, creating a culture of service, making connections and promoting achievement.

Silent Auction/Dinner Dance - All guests are invited to the CADA Art Gala and Dinner Dance Friday, March 1. The evening’s activities include a reception and silent auction of artwork from local and international artists from 7:00pm-8:00pm. Please take time to view the art, place your bid, and enjoy the reception. The sit down dinner will begin at 8:00pm with a live auction of one of David Garibaldi’s pieces. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to student college scholarships. You can download the scholarship application at www.CADA1.org.

Cyber Cafe - The Cyber Café and Technology Lab will be open for your creative juices to flow. Our casual café setting and our interactive classroom will show you what technology is being utilized successfully in classrooms and on campuses across the state and will give you tips on how to creatively integrate these programs.

CADA Store - Need help getting your creative juices started? Well, the CADA store is fully stocked for your needs to help you back at your school. If you don’t have time to stop by the store during the convention it can always be accessed at www.cada1.org/store.

The CADA Exhibit Hall - The 200+ booth expo hall at the CADA convention will feature over 140 companies that will supply you with all the tools and resources you and your students will need.

Pre Conference Seminar - Paint Your Digital Masterpiece Wednesday Morning from 9:00am-12:00pm (Certification 202)This seminar can also qualify for MAA Certification. If you will be attending this session and like the additional certification credit, please indicate this on the registration form and pay the appropriate additional fee.

Here you will get intense training in Google Docs or in creating your own online personal communication network for school. Learn how to master your blog, share documents online, create a website, tweet, mass text, and how to manage it all from your very own computer. BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) and use our wireless network or use one of the 30-workstations in the CADA Cyber Café. Plus, we will offer follow up sessions in our Tech Loft on your own laptop or digital device, exclusively for the people who sign up for this class because we know that even the Mona Lisa was not painted in a day. (This session is limited to 50 attendees).

CADA MAA CertificationWednesday at 1:15pm, (Additional Fee Required)

Just “IMAGINE” an amazing work of art, yes an activities program that reaches out to all students and connects them to school. The CADA Master Activity Program (MAA) will help give you the tools to create your masterpiece. During the 2013 CADA Conference in San Diego the Level I component, “Foundations for Student Activities” will be offered. In the Foundations session you will be introduced to the essential elements for successful Student Activities and how they interrelate. The elements include: Effective Communications, Organizing Student Activities, Leadership Program Development, Developing Personal Leadership Skills, Legal Aspects of Student Activities, Fiscal Accountability and School Culture and Climate.

In Level II you will get an in-depth and advanced study of each of the Essential Elements. Each one of these elements will help you “sketch-out” that successful Student Activities Program. Check out the CADA website at www.CADA1.org for a complete description of the entire certification program. A complete listing of the Level II elements that will be offered in San Diego will be available after November 1, 2012 on the CADA website. Now is the time to become a “Certified Master Activities Director!”

Research shows participation in student activities increases students’ standardized test scores, GPAs, daily attendance, graduation rates, college acceptance rates, and college success rates. This participation practically eliminates the likelihood that a student will choose to drop out or “walk out” of high school while it provides an opportunity to learn and practice social emotional learning (SEL) which reduces behavior remediation costs in both time and money. The Alliance for Student Activities has created an engaging multi-media based presentation that pulls together current research, dialogue and thinking about the impact of co-curricular activities on student performance. The evidence is overwhelming and quite compelling; student activities are the missing variable in too many educational reform equations. to hip hop icons Run DMC and Snoop Dogg and painting graffiti with his middle school friends. Music remained a big part of his life joining high school hip-hop dance group, Boogie Monstarz, but art became a more predominant force in his life as he perfected his skill in high school courses.

A high school animation teacher first inspired him to take his passion for graffiti and turn it into a more positive and creative direction. Garibaldi never forgets this encouragement and more importantly the value of someone believing in him. Every performance is an opportunity to give back – either through teaching youth or providing resources to the community.

Richard Parkhouse, known throughout educational circles as “Park,” brings a wealth of knowledge regarding positive school environments and increasing expectations. Park has dedicated himself to developing outstanding student activity and leadership programs nationally. He has committed himself to “Changing Lives and Impacting Futures.” He has served as an educator for 25-years as a science teacher, coach, activities director, and assistant principal. Park’s vision is to assist schools in taking their mission statement

from “artwork on the wall” to where you can “see it and feel it” as you walk the halls. He helped to found the California Association of Renaissance Educators in 1996 and developed a strong coalition of Renaissance Schools. When asked about his personal interests, he has a heart for school culture, kids futures, leadership training and being incredible!

KeynoteSpeakers Jason HewlettWednesday General Session 6:00pm-7:15pm

Jason was born in Salt Lake City, UT in 1978. His first show was in front of his 3rd grade class where his teacher promised him some time to perform at the end of the day if he’d remain quiet until then. When his chance arrived, Jason went to the front of the classroom as his favorite TV character, Pee Wee Herman, and as his classmates roared with laughter, Jason was hooked with the performing bug.

Jason graduated as an Honor Roll student and Student Body President from The Waterford School in Sandy, UT, in 1997. Jason received All-State Honors for his contributions on the school’s basketball team and had plans to play in College until one of his heroes, Coach Tony Ingle of BYU, noticed Jason’s ability to captivate an audience with his humor and impressions. With the help of teachers, coaches and his parents Jason developed his “One Man Show of Music and Comedy Impressions.” Jason has a very inspirational story to tell while entertaining the crowd with his hilarious impressions.

Art has been an ever-present part of David Garibaldi’s life. From the moment he picked up a crayon as a young child and started to draw, he knew his passion for creating color and images would serve a greater purpose. Creativity surrounded him through his father’s music and dance and his mom’s work as a beauty stylist. CADA/CASL Talks - (Saturday 9:30am-10:15am & 10:20am-11:25am) Based on the popular TEDTalks, our version will also offer knowledge and inspiration in a storytelling format from experts... former student leaders who are now change agents in their fields. How did becoming involved in a leadership program contribute to their path? What caused them to not only become successful, but have a desire to change attitudes and the lives of those around them in order to build a better world? We invite our educational community of curious souls to come listen to their stories, think about leadership programs on your campus and gain new perspective. What are the most important elements we should teach and what are the most valuable experiences we can provide young leaders to ensure they become the change agents of the world?
