TENA WILSON Executive Director

STEVEN PITTMANPresident, Library Board of Trustees

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE2013 was my first full year as director, and it was a time of listening and learning. A vision began to grow, informed by those who use (and don’t use) the libraries, the Board, the talented library staff and our many library partners. We focused on early childhood literacy, lifelong learning, and community connections — while looking ahead to new opportunities.

Long known for promoting literacy, your library is evolving to promote the newest form: digital literacy. Electronic magazines, and streaming movies and music were added to the collections in 2013. Nearly 230 technology classes were attended by over 3,000 patrons, and nearly 2,600 online technology tutorials were viewed through our website in 2013.

Your library is always open at www.starklibrary.org. We spent much time and effort in 2013 planning and creating an improved online experience for you. Look for it to be launched in the summer of 2014.

Your library is a gathering place. In addition to fostering an environment for learning, entertainment, and self-improvement, the programs brought thousands of people together. A few of the programming highlights in 2013 included author visits by Rosemary Wells and Todd Blackledge, poetry contests and readings, ballroom dancing lessons, and the Dewey Decibel Tour Opening Act Contest.

It is my hope that you will fully utilize the Library’s vast array of materials, digital resources, welcoming spaces, and enriching programs. While we accomplished much in 2013, stay tuned. Even bigger, smarter things are coming to your library.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEOver two-thirds of Stark County residents own a library card. In 2013, 1.4 million Stark County District Library visitors borrowed 3.5 million items from the collections. These statistics defy any predictions of the demise of libraries and are evidence that libraries are vital to the community.

Collaboration was a key component of our 2013 achievements. Partnerships with organizations such as Harvest for Hunger, the Canton Symphony Orchestra, ArtsinStark, Stark County Job and Family Services, SARTA, Mercy Medical Center, Stark Parks, the Library Foundation, and our Friends of the Library groups advanced our outreach, contributions, and ability to make a difference. The Library is proud to be a part of such a generous and supportive community of residents, volunteers, organizations, and businesses.

As always, foremost in our thoughts as we envision the future is the enrichment of the lives of our library users while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars. We do our best to operate the Stark County District Library in a prudent, fiscally responsible manner, which, in turn, results in a stronger library and a smarter community.
