From the President and the Principal

Dear Eagle Families and Friends,

The 2013-2014 fiscal year was one with many great accomplishments largely due to the Santa Margarita Catholic High School community coming together and working as one. It is with Eagle pride that we present to you the 2013-2014 Annual Report. Our students’ accomplishments are numerous and the support of our faculty, staff, families and friends was truly the foundation for another great year to be an Eagle.

Furthering our charism of Caritas Christi, the school year included the addition of the school’s first full-time campus chaplain, Fr. Randy Sampinto, AM, as well as Sr. Joanna Strouse, SDSH who joined the Eagle family as the school’s faith formation facilitator. Both Father and Sister have enriched the faith lives of our entire community. The year also included shifting away from tallying service hours focusing instead on meaningful projects. Through service in our community and beyond, these projects – including working with Goodwill, Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen, and the Special Olympics as well as a variety of nonprofits chosen by students – continued to immerse our students into the heart of our faith. Santa Margarita made some great strides in technology introducing our One-to-One Tablet PC Program to faculty and staff. The 2013-2014 school year was filled with training and preparing the teachers for the full implementation of the program at the start of the 2014-2015 year, meeting one of our Strategic Plan goals. With the start of the 2014-2015 school year, each student has their own tablet PC providing an immersive educational experience.

Santa Margarita students continued to excel with unprecedented success in several areas on campus. Our MUN students achieved a record number of delegation awards, The Eagle Eye Newspaper was ranked ninth in the nation, and Talon Theatre’s performance of “Pippin” was awarded the M.A.C.Y award for Best Musical. It was also a record school year for our athletes with six team CIF titles and nine individual titles all supported by the evolution of our “Eagles Nest” student cheering section.

The 2013-2014 school year also saw a number of campus enhancements including the resurfacing of the Harry Brittingham Track for the first time since 1996. The campus heating and air conditioning system was upgraded to a more efficient, environmentally-friendly system while also bringing air conditioning to our Moiso Pavilion, a long-awaited campus upgrade. The Borchard Library modernization completely transformed the space providing our students a technology-based, collaborative learning environment that supports the school’s innovative learning initiatives. Renovations to the school’s Borchard Science Lecture Hall also took place including new carpet and paint, portable lab capabilities in the lecture halls as well as an oceanography laboratory equipped with a 300-gallon saltwater tank, home to Southern California coastline marine life. Our campus store expansion has been a big hit for our families making it more convenient to purchase uniforms, supplies and Eagle fan merchandise. Many other facilities projects kept the campus busy including the replacement of a gas line, asphalt resurfacing and replacement, painting, the purchase of 80 new student lockers and a conference room update.

Santa Margarita continues to thrive due to our wonderful students, faculty, staff, parents and friends. It is through your gifts of time, talent and treasure that the school is able to be the exceptional Catholic school that it is today. We look forward to the great strides that will be made this year and the continued growth and success of our students.

In Eagle Spirit,

J. Andrew Sulick ’91 Raymond R. Dunne President Principal

2013-2014 Boards and Committees-Gifts of Time and Talent Santa Margarita Catholic High School would not be the exceptional college preparatory school it is without

the many parents, alumni, alumni parents and friends that give their time and talents in all areas of the school and especially those who serve on our leadership boards and committees. A special thank you to our committees

for giving their time, talent and treasure during the 2013-2014 school year.

Campus Ministry The Campus Ministry Department is humbled in being given the task to empower faculty, staff, parents and young people to grow in their faith as well as to live “Caritas Christi,” the love of Christ, in our world today. Through events and relationships formed, the campus ministry staff encourages those they serve to witness the gospel within their lives and grow in their relationships with God, one another and with themselves.

Staff • Fr. Randy Sampinto, AM and Sr. Joanna Strouse, SDSH joined the Campus Ministry staff. They both bring wonderful spiritual gifts and knowledge, along with immense love and compassion, to the Santa Margarita community. - Father Randy, the school’s campus chaplain, provides daily masses, sports masses, Advent and Lenten reconciliation, as well as weekly Eucharistic Adoration in the school’s Sacred Heart Chapel. - Sister Joanna has brought great depth and enthusiasm as the faith formation facilitator not only to the students, but also to faculty, staff and parents through beautiful teachings, creative presentations and engaging prayer services.

Student Service LearningRecently, Santa Margarita shifted from tallying service hours focusing instead on engaging students in service through meaningful grade-level projects that both inform students about Catholic social justice teaching and immerse them in being Christ to “the least of these.” The “service learning” program is integrated into the religion curriculum and includes reflective assignments. As part of the faculty’s ongoing professional develepment, internationally known speaker and author, Cathryn Berger Kaye, presented an in-service about integrating service-learning across the curriculum.• The Caritas Christi Project: provides each freshman the opportunity to visit the Goodwill Industries Center in Santa Ana with their religion class. The project culminates with the entire freshman class serving as coaches and mentors to approximately 1,100 athletes at our Special Olympics track and field event in March.• The Agnus Dei Project: gives sophomores the opportunity to serve the working poor families who are part of the Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen ministry. Students organize and run carnivals throughout the year on the grounds of St. Joseph’s School, the Loaves and Fishes site in Santa Ana.• The Lumen Christi Project: a two-year program encompassing a student’s junior and senior year. One of the goals of the Lumen Christi Project is to assist students in identifying structural issues of injustice based on their research and on-the-ground experience while serving a nonprofit agency of their choice.

Faculty/Staff Service Day • SMCHS worked with Catholic Relief Services and Stop Hunger Now to package over 15,000 meals delivered to Africa as part of the school’s faculty and staff service project. Speakers representing the local nonprofits of Loaves and Fishes and the Illumination Foundation educated employees about the hunger epidemic.

Masses and Liturgical Celebrations • Peer ministry students planned, organized and facilitated eight prayerful and engaging school Masses during the school year. • For the first time, the Baccalaureate Mass was held in the Moiso Pavilion instead of neighboring San Francisco Solano parish, allowing seniors to create memories on campus.• The Stations of the Cross were organized by peer ministry students offering the SM community beautiful worship music, witness talks, a reflection and skit. • Sports Masses, morning Masses, weekly Eucharistic Adoration, Advent and Lenten reconciliations, along with other requested Masses, were organized as forms of prayer for the SM community.• The Student Worship Band grew with several students offering their musical talents for school Masses and worship events.• For the first time, a chasuble in the school colors of blue and gold with the symbol of Caritas Christi on the front of the garment was custom ordered for priests to wear at Santa Margarita liturgical events such as school masses.

Retreats and Outreach• There is an increased focus on outreach to both community organizations and local parishes. Through events, service and one-on-one contact, working relationships are formed to make a difference in people’s lives.• XLT praise and worship nights were offered to students four times throughout the school year. The new fellowship evenings, attended by numerous students and the extended community, included powerful and inspiring talks, prayerful Eucharistic Adoration and the sacrament of reconciliation accompanied by praise and worship music.• Word and Worship, another new program, was held bi-monthly in the Sacred Heart Chapel during lunch. Students were able to stop mid-week for a quick spiritual “shot-in-the-arm.”• Seniors participated in Kairos 4th Night, an evening where seniors that attended a Kairos retreat came together at the end of the year for student-led prayer, song and worship as well as a powerful witness talk given by one of their peers. • Retreats continued to grow in participation. A growing number of students also applied to be retreat leaders as a way to “give back” and aid in the experience for other students.• A leadership retreat brought together both ASB officers and peer ministry students to grow as spiritual leaders of the Santa Margarita community.• The very first on-campus lit nativity scene was displayed in the grassy area outside of the Borchard Library, a reminder of the reason for the season.• Peer ministry students organized a meaningful Senior Pilgrimage, an annual Santa Margarita tradition held each year on Holy Thursday, with seniors walking from SMCHS to the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. Every step of the 13.7 mile is lifted to God in the name of a person or cause in need of prayers. The pilgrimage concludes with lunch and a prayer service.

• Two Red Cross blood drives provided life-saving blood. During the 2013-2014 school year, SMCHS collected a total of 135 units of blood helping to save 405 lives. The drives are organized by peer ministry students.

Alumni

Santa Margarita Catholic High School enjoys the support of our alumni. In recent years, the Santa Margarita Catholic High School alumni office has made great strides in fostering meaningful, lasting relationships with alumni and their alma mater. The Alumni Office builds and strengthens alumni connections, encourages support of the school, promotes lifetime involvement with SMCHS and offers alumni programs.

Fifth Annual Sarah DeMille 5K Memorial RunOn Saturday, July 20, 2013 Santa Margarita alumni, students, families and friends were up early to attend the fifth annual Sarah DeMille 5k Memorial Run. The run is held in memory of Santa Margarita alumna Sarah DeMille ’05, who passed away at college in 2006 in an automobile accident. During her time at SMCHS, DeMille was a dedicated four-year cross-country runner. Coaches describe her as having a special spirit, one that was contagious and showed her dedication and belief in hard work and commitment in everything she did. DeMille also left her mark at Applied Medical, the company where she spent two summers working as an intern. Applied Medical began the scholarship fund in her memory. With more than 250 runners and generous sponsors and underwriters the event secured $17,500 for the scholarship fund. In attendance were four previous winners of the Sarah DeMille ’05 scholarship fund: Jessica Mumaugh ’09, Karmyn McKnight ’10, Sarah Porter ’11 and Aitana Zermeno ’12. Together the scholarship winners surprised the DeMille family and coaches with official Sarah DeMille 5k Memorial Run jackets. Thank you to our 5th Year Sponsors and Underwriters: Toyota of Huntington Beach, Russell and Lazarus, Ramp Logistics, Dr. David Grant ’94 D.D.S., Applied Medical, Peppino’s Italian Family Restaurant, DJ Chris, Steve Luxenberg ’00, BallPark Pizza, Pigneri Family, Giuliano Family, Drust Family, Scott Feyka ’98, Lake Family and Van Ruiten Family.

Alumni Council The Alumni Council was formed during the 2013-2014 school year to build and strengthen lifetime connections between alumni and their alma mater while supporting the goals and mission of the school. The council works to build alumni relations. Goals:• Engage a sense of tradition and pride in being a graduate of SMCHS through alumni participation• Increase participation in alumni and other SMCHS events• Encourage career networking with SMCHS students during our annual Career Day • Increase alumni financial support to the school in order to advance our missionAlumni Council Members: President-Meg Harty Tennant ’01, Joleen Austin Bassett ’95, Alycia Fitzpatrick Beresford ’01, Sara Simmons Brakke ’91, Brianne Wedertz Burke ’98, Scott Feyka ’98, Karly Farris Foster ’98, Tracy Scheil Garcia ’92, Jason Giardini ’91, Daniella Di Loretta Kelly ’00, Bryan Kretzmer ’00, Chad Kurthy ’01, Jaimee Lieske ’08 Steve Luxenberg ’00, Katie McCurdy ’02, Shane Mielke ’91Jeyur Patel ’06, Jenna Scherman Shott ’02, Andy Sulick ’91

Alumni Career DayEighteen alumni returned to the SMCHS campus in January to educate and inspire the class of 2015 as part of the fifth annual Alumni Career Day. This year’s keynote speaker was Sarah Walker Ollenburger ’96, who shared her experiences in working as a hiring manager. Ollenburger emphasized how poor judgement on social media can negatively affect your professional career and the importance of always presenting yourself in a positive light. Following Ollenburger’s speech, students explored the Alumni Career Day college fair, talked with alumni one-on-one and met with college representatives. The grads in attendance worked in medicine, law, entertainment, sales, marketing, fire safety, fashion, teaching, engineering, video production, financial investing and physical therapy.

Thank you to our alumni who returned to campus for Career Day: Kris Farris ’95, Chris Kelishes ’95, Sarah Walker Ollenburger ’96, Elizabeth Barry Burgamy, MD ’97, Scott Feyka ’98, Kyndell Gaglio Thorson ’98, Scott Schimmel ’98, Dani DiLoretta Kelly ’00, Bryan Kretzmer ’00, Steve Luxenberg ’00, Mariel Covarrubias, Esq. ’02, Jenna Scherman Shott ’02, Dave Luxenberg ’03, Katie Sales ’05, Jordan Smith ’05, Taylor Zuccolotto ’07, Noelle Bellow ’07, Chris Lupin ’08 Pay it forward and share your story this year with the Class of 2016! Honor Roll of Donors

Dear Eagle Families and Friends,

Twenty-seven years ago we were blessed to have the Diocese of Orange and our founding families’ dedication and love pave the way for a college-preparatory school in south Orange County. The many gifts they bestowed on our school still live on and serve as inspiration to each of us who are here today.

It is with deep appreciation that we continue to honor those of you who have continued to support us through the years and say thank you to those who are new to our Eagle family, continuing the legacy of philanthropy that is steadfast here at Santa Margarita. From the endless hours of time you dedicate volunteering with your gifts of talent, to the many gifts of treasure you bring, this school would not be thriving and progressing without each of you doing your part and leaving your footprint here on campus. For it’s not just the current students that benefit from your gifts, it’s the students of the future that will know that this school is here because of you. With heartfelt gratitude, we wish to simply say thank you, for you have made a difference in the lives of thousands of students who will continue to live their lives keeping faithful to our charism, Caritas Christi.

We ask you to consider again this year how you can do your part. Our students invest countless hours here on campus pursuing their educational goals for the future, we hope that you will help us support them through your gifts to SMCHS.

Many blessings,

Laurie BeachSr. Director of Development

The gifts listed in the Honor Roll of Donors include all gifts to SMCHS from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014. We have made every effort to publish accurate information. If your name has been misspelled, omitted or listed incorrectly, we apologize and ask you to contact the Development Office at (949) 766-6080.

Thank you for supporting Santa Margarita Catholic High School through the Eagle Fund. The Eagle Fund is Santa Margarita’s annual giving program. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of a Santa Margarita education. The Eagle Fund bridges that financial gap allowing Santa Margarita to be an exceptional place for learning and personal growth. Your gift gives the students, faculty, staff and coaches of Santa Margarita the opportunity to grow in all areas – spiritually, academically, physically and socially.
