Opening Day, 1987

Nestled against the Saddleback Mountains, Santa Margarita Catholic High School’s campus provides an ideal environment for students to worship, learn, and thrive. The school began as a dream of the late Bishop William R. Johnson, who saw the need and potential for a Catholic high school in South Orange County.

In 1985, Bishop Johnson’s enthusiasm caught the attention of religious and business leaders and soon plans were under way to fund and build an extraordinary school. With God’s blessing, a handful of dedicated people, and the generosity of donors, Santa Margarita Catholic High School established its roots. The school opened its doors in the fall of 1987 andthe charter class of 218 students graduated in June of 1991. Now home to nearly 1,700 students each year, Santa Margarita boasts dedicated faculty and staff, unmatched academic programs, faith-filled activities and competitive athletics.

Santa Margarita prides itself in offering a variety of academic programs allowing all types of learners the opportunity to succeed. In October of 1995, the school launched its Auxiliary Studies Program to provide additional support to students who learn differently. Santa Margarita is the only Catholic school in the state to offer such a comprehensive program. In 1997, the school was accepted as a prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and is the only Catholic school in the county to offer the academically-rigorous IB track. Santa Margarita also offers Advanced Placement courses and an Interdisciplinary Program which emphasizes hands-on learning and weaves together subjects beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. In 1998, the United States Department of Education awarded Santa Margarita its highest honor – the Blue Ribbon, an award given to only the nation’s finest schools.

Now in our 27th year, the campus continues to progress. In 2007, the much anticipated Aquatic Center opened boasting an Olympic-sized, 50-meter pool. The Sacred Heart Chapel was renovated in 2008 and serves as the spiritual center of campus. The campus expanded in 2010 with the addition of the Eagle Athletic Center – the first LEED-certified, green building in the city of Rancho Santa Margarita and the Diocese of Orange. This facility rivals athletic facilities at the nation’s top universities. The school’s commitment to the environment continues with the Academic Services Center completed in the fall of 2011, also a LEED-certified building. With a focus on the future, the Academic Services Center offers innovative technology and enhanced counseling services.

Santa Margarita graduates become leaders in business, medicine, law, non-profits, military, finance, government and in the Church. With more than 8,902 alumni, Santa Margarita Catholic High School continues to produce exceptional graduates – spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally – as Bishop Johnson envisioned.

Our Mission at Santa Margarita Catholic High School is to bring

the nurturing charism of Caritas Christi – the love of Christ –

to our community of faith and learning.

SMCHS strives to develop graduates who are:

Spiritually Intellectually People of Faith Skilled Lifelong Learners

Physically Socially & Morally Healthy Individuals Involved Citizens of the World

Discovery Faith development and extracurricular activities are an integral part of a Santa Margarita Catholic education. Students are encouraged to explore their passions, deepen their faith and reach beyond their comfort zone. It’s all about discovery and becoming part of a learning community.

Peer Ministry Students serve as faith leaders by coordinating school liturgies, prayer services, praise and worship activities, retreats and Christian service opportunities.

Campus Ministry Praise and Worship Nights Students gather throughout the school year for faith-filled fellowship. The evening events include inspirational talks from both students and adults, powerful praise and worship music, prayer and small group sharing. The program focuses on following Christ’s example. The praise and worship nights bridge the gap between faith and everyday life, between church on Sundays and weekday commitments.

Spiritual Retreats School spiritual retreats offer teens a chance to break away from the demands of everyday life and grow with God and their peers. Retreats are offered for all grade levels. The experience encourages unity and friendship within our community of faith. Kairos, a nationally-recognized retreat program, is offered to seniors at a critical time in their lives as they prepare for college and beyond. The powerful four-day retreat in Julian, California gives teens a chance to deepen their relationship with God, one another and themselves.

Religious Leadership Santa Margarita is proud to have both a priest and sister on campus serving as a witness of religious life. Through a partnership with the Sisters of the Sacred Heart and the Disciples of Mary, the school has both a full-time campus chaplain and faith formation facilitator. Both sister and father assist with the pastoral and spiritual needs of the school including helping to celebrate the sacraments, serving as guest speakers in religion classes and organizing faith formation opportunities. Modeling the charism of the school – Caritas Christi (the love of Christ) – they work to spread God’s love through prayers, stories, advice, smiles and teachings.

Link Crew Santa Margarita is the only Catholic high school in Orange County to offer Link Crew. The nationally-recognized transition program provides freshmen with a warm welcome and eases the leap into high school both academically and socially. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, Link Crew trains upperclassmen to serve as positive role models and mentors for the freshman class.

International Baccalaureate World SchoolSanta Margarita is one of only two Catholic International Baccalaureate (IB) World high schools in the state. The program aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Santa Margarita offers both the Full Diploma and Certificate Programs. An IB diploma is the only globally-recognized degree with classes taught at an international standard. Students in the IB program have the opportunity to earn college credit. Santa Margarita has an 86% pass rate (Class of 2014), well above the international 79% rate.

Model United NationsThe Model United Nations (MUN) program catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation with students stepping into the shoes of United Nations ambassadors. Students prepare positions and speeches, plot strategies, negotiate, debate and seek to resolve conflicts. Our students have had the opportunity to visit and compete in China, London and Paris. In the past ten years, Santa Margarita students have traveled more than 28,688,000 miles to MUN conferences around the world. The conferences bring together international students fostering cultural awareness.

Culturally DiverseSanta Margarita Catholic High School is pleased to offer admission to international students. These students bring rich diversity to our institution. In the fall of 2014, Santa Margarita welcomed 30 new international students bringing the total number of students from abroad to 67. Santa Margarita has recently welcomed students from Australia, Canada, China, Croatia, Germany, Korea, Latvia, Mexico, Norway, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. Many of these students live with Santa Margarita host families. Bringing cultures together from across the globe helps build well-rounded students.

Christian ServiceOne of the most important ways students learn is through service. Santa Margarita students engage in meaningful service projects through the school’s Christian Service Program. Projects include volunteering at Goodwill, serving as coaches and mentors at a Special Olympics track and field meet as well as serving the working poor at a local soup kitchen and organizing a carnival for low-income children. Students also have the opportunity to do an in-depth service project working with a local nonprofit of their choice. The program develops in each student the art of recognizing, comprehending and caring for the needs of others. A testament to Caritas Christi, the love of Christ, the program develops in each student the habit of seeing the world as God sees it. Students also have the chance to participate in immersion trips which combine service with cultural and outdoor education. Opportunities include serving on the Taos Native American Reservation in New Mexico and serving the poorest of poor in Uruguay and the surrounding area.

Eagle Athletic Center Santa Margarita Catholic High School is the proud home of the Eagle Athletic Center, the first LEED-certified building in Rancho Santa Margarita and in the Diocese of Orange. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council and is considered the benchmark in sustainable construction. The process is voluntary and demonstrates leadership, innovation and social responsibility. The $8.7 million, 39,000 square-foot center serves the diverse needs of the school’s competitive athletic programs and provides premier physical education opportunities to the entire student body. The building opened in the spring of 2010.

The three-story athletic center features a 5,822 square-foot fitness and weight room, team rooms, conference rooms, coaches’ offices, an 800 square-foot trainers’ room, wrestling facility, five classrooms and banquet space. Teams have the ability to analyze plays in a theatre-style film room. The building also has two smaller film rooms featuring interactive electronic whiteboards. The Eagle Athletic Center rivals athletic facilities at elite universities.

The materials used to construct the athletic center are environmentally friendly, contain renewable resources and conserve energy. The building uses 42 percent less water than a typical building and 21 percent less energy. About 10 percent of the building was constructed from recyclable material and 75 percent of the construction waste was recycled. The building earned silver-level LEED certification.

Building for the Future

Academic Services CenterIn September of 2011, Santa Margarita opened the new Academic Services Center. The $6.4 million building centralizes the school’s academic offices housing the Counseling, Auxiliary Studies Program Center, International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and Online Learning and Assessment Departments under one roof. Ten “smart classrooms” outfitted with interactive whiteboards, netbooks where students can access e-books, and specialized lighting and audio technology provide our students with state-of-the art learning facilities. Node chair desks create a dynamic learning environment allowing students to easily transition from one mode to the next whether it’s wheeling into groups, utilizing their netbooks at their adjustable desks or swiveling around to watch a presentation. The center also includes the school’s 3,400 square-foot Digital Media Studio, a learning lab for television and film production classes and home to the student-run news show Eagle TV. The studio features a high definition (HD) control room and advanced audio, video, lighting, cameras and editing equipment on par with studios on college campuses. Students attend French, Ancient Greek, Latin, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese classes in the new building.

The new center is LEED-certified, an internationally-recognized green building certification, representing a commitment to the environment. Future plans for Santa Margarita include a long-awaited arts center, further developing the on-campus orchard and an equestrian facility.
