During the three-year MEAC regular season "three-peat," the Hornets post-ed a league record of 46-8 (.850). Jackson is 137-68 vs. MEAC opponents as head coach of the Hornets (.668). On January 28, 2006, Jackson was presented with the Tubby Raymond Award as the most outstanding coach in the state of Delaware, the first time a DSU coach has received the honor. In September 2006, Jackson was presented with the "Unsung Hero Award" by the William E. Proudford Sickle Cell Fund, Inc. in recognition of his dedi-cation to improving the lives of individuals with sickle cell disease through his personal testimony. He has shared publicly the story of his son Greg, Jr.'s fight against sickle cell, their religious faith that helped them through it, as well as his role as a father caring for his son. Delaware State was 30-78 in the four years prior to Jackson's arrival. He inherited a team that was 6-22 the previous season. Prior to accepting the Delaware State job in May 2000, Jackson spent the previous 16 years at Division II North Carolina Central University, the last nine as head coach of the Eagles. Under Jackson's leadership, NCCU did not have a losing season and post-ed an overall record of 163-77. He led the Eagles to five Central Intercolle-giate Athletic Association (CIAA) division titles, and three trips to the NCAA playoffs. He also earned three CIAA Coach-of-the-Year awards. He is one of two coaches in the history of the NCCU men's basketball program to compile 20 or more victories in four seasons, joining NBA Coaches Hall of Fame inductee John McLendon. Prior to becoming head coach at North Carolina Central, Jackson was an Eagles assistant under Mike Bernard for seven years. He was on the staff when NCCU captured the NCAA Division II national championship in 1989. During his playing days at St. Paul's, Jackson was a four-year starter and a three-time All-CIAA selection, His 2,249 career points is tops in school history, and rank 12th on the all-time CIAA scoring list. As a junior (1979-80), he led all collegiate players in scoring, averaging 30.5 points-per-game. That season, he earned All-America Honorable Mention and CIAA Co-player-of-the-Year honors. St. Paul's retired Jackson's number 23 jer-sey in 1991. Jackson earned a bachelor's in Elementary Education from St. Paul's in 1980 and a master's in Educational Technology from North Carolina Cen-tral in 1994. Jackson and wife Terry have three sons, Greg Jr. (25), Justin (13) and Jaylen (8). Greg, Jr., a Delaware State University graduate, was a member of the Hornets during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. HEAD COACH GREG JACKSON

JACKSON CLOSING IN ON DSU COACHING MARK

Now in his 14th season at Delaware State, Jackson entered the 2013-14 campaign just six victories shy of becoming the Hornets' all-time winningest coach. He has 198 wins at DSU, highlighted by a 145-79 mark in MEAC regular season games (.647). The cur-rent school record holder is the late Ben-nie George, who tallied 201 men's basketball wins from 1949 to '71. Jackson has led the Hornets to the most suc-cessful period in the history of the program. His tenure at DSU is highlighted by the school's only MEAC Tournament champion-ship and NCAA tournament berth, three regu-

lar season conference titles and only national post-season win. In addition, he is a two-time MEAC Coach-of-the-Year. Jackson led the Hornets to three consecutive MEAC regular season titles from 2004 to '07. Following the 2004-05 regular season crown, the Hornets captured the first MEAC Tournament championship in team history. DSU won the tour-nament with a nationally-televised, last-second victory over Hampton (55-53). During the 2012-13 campaign, Jackson guided the Hornets to the MEAC Tournament semifinals for the eighth time. DSU advanced to the 2013 MEAC Tournament "Final Four" with a victory over No. 3 seed Hampton in the quarterfinals. The Hornets also captured the first win against a Confer-ence USA team with their 53-51 victory at Marshall on Jan. 2, 2013. The previous season (2011-12), Jackson led the Hornets to a 15-14 over-all record and a third place finish during the MEAC regular season with a 12-4 mark in league play. DSU's 15 wins that season marked a six-game improvement from the previous year. The Hornets‟ 2011-12 MEAC victo-ries included a season sweep of conference champion Norfolk State, which stunned No. 2 seeded Missouri in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Jackson's 2011-12 squad featured All-MEAC First Team selection Jay Threatt (G) and MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year Tahj Tate (G). Tate was al-so named to the All-MEAC Second Team, along with Hornet forward Marques Oliver. Now in his 23nd season as a collegiate head coach, the Augusta, Ga., native holds a career record of 359-279 (.563). He earned his 300th victo-ry with a 64-58 win over Florida A&M on January 26, 2009. For his career, Jackson has coached 638 games, leading his teams to four NCAA post-season tournaments (both Division I & II), including DSU's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance (2005). He is 196-201 overall at Delaware State. Jackson earned national acclaim for his coaching skill in the Hornets' 57-46 loss to number one seeded Duke in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. DSU entered the contest as a 26-point underdog. Jackson was praised by tele-vision broadcasters throughout the contest and by legendary Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski during his post-game remarks. Despite winning the MEAC regular season championship for the second year in a row, the Hornets were upset by Hampton in the 2006 conference tournament championship game. Following the heartbreaking loss, Jack-son had less than three days to prepare his team for a contest in Flagstaff, Arizona in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. All he did was lead the Hornets to a 58-53 triumph over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks for the first national tournament win in team history The 2005-06 Hornets also set school records for overall wins (21), MEAC wins (16) and regular season wins (18). In addition, Delaware State post-ed a team-record nine-game winning streak that season. The 16 MEAC wins tied for second best in the history of the league. Jackson was selected by his peers as the 2005-06 MEAC Coach-of-the-Year, the first Delaware State coach to earn the award since 1977. Dela-ware State's 2006-07 squad also posted a 16-2 MEAC record (21-13 over-all) to capture its third straight regular season title. Jackson was rewarded with his second straight MEAC Coach-of-the-Year award.

WALKER HEATING UP

Delaware State forward Casey Walker (sr.) has picked up his scoring pace the past sever-al games . Walker has reached double figures in scoring in four of the last five games, tal-

lying 61 points during the span (12.2 ppg) to raise his average to 10.2 points per game, second best on the team. He could also threaten the Hornets‟ all-time mark for three-point field goals this season. Walker leads the Hornets with 20 three-pointers this season (20-for-74; .270) to give him 227 for his career. The school record is 303 by Jahsha Bluntt (2003-07). Walker hit 34.8% of his three-point attempts en route to a team-high 73 threes as a freshman during the 2010-11 season. He was named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year that season. The following year, he im-proved his three-point shooting to 36.9% while lead-ing the team with 76 triples. As a junior during the 2012-13 season, Walker hit a career low 58 threes on 25.4% shooting from long range. He has led the Hornets in three point field goals in each of his first three seasons. The Broadnax, Va., native has hit six three-pointers in a game three times in his career. Walker passed the 1,000-point mark at Delaware State vs. Hampton on Feb. 25, 2013. He currently

sits at 1,183 points to rank 11th on the school‟s all-time list. _______________________________________________________________________

GRAY MORE THAN A SHOT BLOCKER

Delaware State center Kendall Gray (jr.) is proving to be more than just a defensive force

this season. Gray recorded his second career “double-double,” tallying 12 points and a

game-high 11 rebounds vs. Oklahoma State in the Hornets‟ last outing. He has reached

double-figures in scoring in six games this season, including a career-high 19 points (8-11

FGs) vs. Delaware on Nov. 25. He ranks fourth on the team in scoring at 9.9 ppg. Gray is

also on a pace to shatter all of the team‟s records for blocked shots. Fifty-seven games

into his college career, Gray has 155 blocks, to rank

second on the school‟s modern day list. He matched his

season high with five blocks against Coppin State on

Dec. 7. Gray also had five blocks against Geo. Wash-

ington on Nov. 19 and had four blocks vs. Delaware

(Nov. 25). Gray has a team-high 25 blocks this season.

He ranks fifth in the MEAC at 2.5 blocks per game. The

school record for blocks is 222 by Marques Oliver

(2009-13). Last season, Gray was second in the MEAC

and 20th among all NCAA Division I players at 2.6

blocks per game (school-record 75 total) as a sopho-

more during the 2012-13 season. The 75 blocks last

season shattered the previous school record of 72 by

Oliver during the 2011-12 campaign. He tied the team

record with eight blocks in DSU‟s 73-69 overtime win against Wagner on Nov. 14, 2012).

He was named to the 2012 All-South Padre Island (Tex.) Invitational Team after tallying 22

points (10-14 FG), 13 rebounds and nine blocks in two games. Gray had at least one block

in 25 of the 29 games in which he has appeared and at least four blocks in nine games.

last season. He had streaks of 12 and eight games with at least one block during his soph-

omore season. As a true freshman in 2011-12, Gray had 54 blocks, despite missing 12

games (including the last 10) due to a knee injury. He had at least one block in his first 13

collegiate games, including 26 during a five-game stretch.

BELL REGAINS FORM

Delaware State forward Tyshawn Bell (jr.) is returning to his early season form. Bell has combined for 61 points in the last five games, reaching dou-ble figures in three of those contests. He has climbed back to the top of the Hornets‟ scoring list at 10.6 points per game and ranks third on the team with 12 three-point field goals. Bell tallied a career-high 19 points in the Hornets‟ 72-47 win over Baptist Bible on Dec. 2. He was 7-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point territory, and 3-for-3 at the line in the game. Bell followed the Baptist Bible performance with 14 points in the Hornets‟ 56-46 loss to Dayton on Dec. 4 and tallied 12 points vs. Coppin State in the Hornets‟ last outing. In the four games prior to the Baptist Bible contest, He combined to shoot 11-of-34 from the field and 2-for-13 from beyond the arc. Bell was tops in the MEAC with a .417 three-point shooting percentage last season (50-for-120). He was second on the Hornets with 50 three-point field goals and fourth on the team in scoring at 8.0 points per game during the 2012-13 campaign. The Dover, Del., native was also tops among Hornet regulars with an .811 free throw percentage (30-for-37). Bell had at least one three-point field goal in 25 games, including a seven-game streak to start the season . He knocked down two-or-more threes in 14 games and reached double figures in scoring in 10 contests. Bell also came up big in two of Delaware State‟s biggest games last season. He hit a game-tying three-pointer with

12.2 seconds left in regulation in the Hornets‟ overtime loss to Penn State; and tallied 15 points (4-5 FGs; 3-3 3pt. FG) in DSU‟s overtime victory against Delaware. As a freshman during the 2011-12 season, Bell was a MEAC All-Rookie selection. He was fifth on the Hornets in scoring (7.2 ppg) and second in three-point field goals (43). Bell ranked fourth in the MEAC in three-point percentage (.387 ... 43-for-111) and knocked down at least one three-pointer in 22 of DSU's 30 contests during his rookie season.

K ―WILL‖

Delaware State guard Kendal Williams (jr.) is far and away the top newcomer on the team this season. Williams has scored in double figures in the last three gams and four of the last five to move to third on the Hornets in scor-ing at 10.0 points per game. He also ranks second in assists (26) and

three-point field goals (16). Williams scored a career-high 19 points (7-11 FG; 3-5 3pt.FG; 2-2 FT) vs. Howard in the Big Apple Classic at the Barclays Cen-ter on Dec. 15. He tallied 18 points (7-8 FGs; 4-5 3pt. FGs) vs. Baptist Bible on Dec. 2 and scored 14 (5-6 FGs; 2-2 3pt.; 2-2 FTs) in his DSU debut vs. Cairn (Nov. 9). The former Dover (Del.) High School star was a 2012-13 All-Maryland Junior College First Team and All-Region XX Second Team selection at Baltimore City Community College. He averaged 14.8 points and 4.9 assists (each a team high) during 2012-13 season and helped lead BCCC to 21-10 overall record, a conference title and Region XX Tournament finals last season.

HOME COOKING

Memorial Hall has been an unfriendly place for Hornet opponents during the Greg Jackson era. Despite a home loss to Coppin State in the last home outing (Dec. 7), the Hornets are a solid 106-38 (.736) mark at home since the 2000-01 season. DSU was 8-3 at home dur-ing the 2012-13 this season. The Hornets were 11-0 at home during the 2002-03 campaign and 9-1 in Memorial Hall during the 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. The Hornets are 76-22 in Memorial Hall vs. MEAC opponents (.776) during Jackson‟s tenure.

WALKER STRONG ON THE GLASS

Known mostly for his three-point shooting, Casey Walker is off to a strong start as a rebounder this season. Walker is tied for the team lead with 62 rebounds this sea-son (5.6 pg), highlighted by 10 each in the first two contests, marking the first time in his career with back-to-back double-figure rebound games. He‟s ninth in the MEAC in rebounding as of Dec. 16. A 3.6 per-game rebounder in his first three seasons, Walk-er had a career-high 11 boards vs. Penn State on Dec. 15, 2012, the only other dou-ble-figure rebound game of his career.

BLOCKS APLENTY

The addition of Kendall Gray to the Hornets two seasons ago has coincided with a big increase in team‟s block total. DSU posted its top two shot block numbers in the last two years. In Gray‟s freshman season of 2011-12, the Hornets recorded a school record 192 blocks. The previous record was 145 by the 1989-90 team. Last season DSU collected 185 blocks, the se-cond-highest total in team history. Gray led the 2012-13 blockers with a school record 75 during his sophomore year.

HOMEGROWN TALENT

For the first time in recent memory, Delaware is the state with the most num-ber of players on the Hornets‟ roster. The 2013-14 roster includes six First State natives, four of whom are new to the team. Local products Tyshawn Bell (Dover) and Kendall Gray (Dover) are in their third season with the team. They are joined this season by fellow Delawareans Charles Burley (Wilmington), J Walter Lawson (Newark), Jason Owens (Seaford), Ken-dal Williams (Dover).

weekend also included a step show, drumline competition and college fair.

JACKSON NO. 2 IN DSU COACHING WINS

Delaware State head coach Greg Jackson is second on the Hornets‟ all-time list for men‟s basketball coaching victories. Now in his 14th season at DSU, Jackson has 198 wins with the Hornets. He trails only the late Bennie George, who recorded 201 wins from 1949 to ‟71 (201-219), for coaching wins with the Hornets. Jackson is 362-285 in his collegiate coaching career (22nd year).

THE NEWCOMERS

Delaware State‟s 2013-14 opening day roster featured nine newcomers, including three junior college transfers and the team‟s first Serbian player. Guards Charles Burley (Cecil CC), Larry Haley (Frederick CC) and Kendal Williams (Baltimore Co. CC) made their Division I debuts this season after first competing at the junior college level. Williams helped lead nearby Dover (Del.) High School to an appearance in the state championship game during his senior year. Burley attend-ed Howard and Glasgow high schools in Delaware before attending college. The Hornets also welcome forward Mrdjan Gasevic to the team this season. Gasevic is a native of Serbia, and attended Creat-ing Young Minds Academy Prep in Irving, Tex., before enrolling at Delaware State. Another former Delaware high school prod-uct, forward Jason Owens (Seaford), joins the team this season. The muscular Owns (6-6/230) is expected to provide much needed inside play for the Hornets this season. Guards DeAndre Haywood, Ra-keen Brown and J Walter Lawson are first year collegiate players, while swing-man Ashwell Boyd joins the team this season after sitting out the 2012-13 cam-paign as a freshman redshirt.
