The Summit Country Day School’s Summer School and Day Camp experience is called “Summit Summer Exploration.” We offer an exciting summer experience with three distinct summer programs on our Cincinnati campus which will help your child continue learning over the summer. Our programs provide a wide range of opportunities and experiences to broaden learning and sharpen skills while being fun at the same time.

Montessori is designed to allow children to continue their academic progress of the school year into the summer for a year-round Montessori education. Montessori sessions are available to current Summit families. We can also accept a limited number of children who attend other Montessori programs and are looking to extend their Montessori education into the summer months (pre-acceptance interview required).

How to Register for Summer Exploration

Registration for all Summer Exploration programs – Montessori School, Summer Day Camps and Academic Classes and Athletic Camps -- is done through a secure online site where parents pay in advance using a credit card. First-time users must create a user name and password. If your family has utilized the registration site previously for summer programs or other after-school programs, you already have an account and should use that same account name and password.

Summer Montessori (Ages 3 - 6) There is much data that shows that children lose academic achievement gained throughout the school year during long summer breaks. Therefore, The Summit Country Day School is providing the opportunity for your child to continue to explore, expand, and experience his or her knowledge of the Montessori materials and educational process through the summer on our campus.

Summer Montessori class will be offered for any new (2012-13) or current (2011-12) Summit Montessori student and a limited number of Montessori children from other schools (pending interview with Montessori faculty). This class will be taught by Summit Montessori teachers.

The Montessori philosophy and materials will be those with which your child is familiar. The lead teachers of this summer Montessori class will communicate with your child’s current lead teacher to determine where in the continuum your child is currently working, so that there is an easy transition to the classroom. In the fall, when classes resume and your child returns to their regular program, your child’s progress will be communicated to his or her teacher. The focus and purpose of this class is to provide a consistent framework for children in order to support the skills foundational to the Montessori Method of education.

Whether you want your child to attend one week or all nine, he or she may be able to retain more of the skills and knowledge by being able to practice those skills throughout the summer. Each week of Summer Montessori class will be limited to the first 24 students enrolling.

Children desiring to stay for summer fun and activities may be enrolled for the afternoon session of “Summit Summer Exploration Summer Day Camp.” Each week children will have fun with different activities, games - inside and out, field trips, crafts, books, fun facts, and friendships.

Summer Montessori Class Hours, Fees, and Policies

• Half-Day Montessori Class 8:30-11:30 a.m. $290/week (Week 5 $232/week)

• Montessori Morning & Afternoon Day Camp $435/week (Week 5 $350/week)

• Registration Fee $25/child (this is a one-time fee for the summer regardless of how many weeks your child attends a class or camp.

• Before Montessori Care 7:30-8:30 a.m. $5/day-$25/week (Week 5 $20/week) (For Summer Camp and After Camp Care see Summer Camp schedule and fee)

• After Montessori Care 11:30 a.m.-Noon $5/day-$25/week (Week 5 $20/week)

• Late Pick-up Charges $15 each 15 minutes or portion thereof after Noon

Rules and Regulations Specific to Montessori Classes

These rules and regulations pertain specifically to students in Montessori classes. See additional rules and regulations pertaining to all students on Page 19.

Location: Montessori classes are held in the Lower School building on The Summit Country Day School campus. All other classes are held as indicated in their description.

Arrival: All students must be signed in when they arrive and signed out when they leave every day by an authorized adult.

Dress: The appropriate dress for most days will be shorts, tee shirt, tennis shoes, and socks. Sandals are discouraged since they may pose a safety hazard with the gym or outside activities. Occasionally, a swimsuit and towel will be required for camp. A note will go home the Monday of the camp week if that is the case.

Lunch: For Montessori students, snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day; however, all-day students will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink. Refrigeration is available and utilized.

Dismissal: Montessori students who are not participating in the After Camp Care must be picked up from the dismissal area at 11:30 a.m. If they are not picked up, they will be sent to the After Camp Care where a late fee will be assessed. (See hours and fees above.)

Adventures await your child this summer in Summer Exploration Day Camps on the campus of The Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati. Traditional day camp with weekly educationally-based themes is held continuously from June 4-August 17. Summer Camp is available to children who are 3 to 8 years old. Young children must be able to use the restroom independently before admission to Summer Camps. The activities each week are based on different themes. Additionally, indoor and outdoor play, board games, crafts, and of course, just plain summer FUN are part of the day. Our Summer Camps program is designed and run by our professional staff of caring and experienced teachers, many of whom are members of the full-time Summit Country Day School faculty. They are carefully selected and highly qualified, energetic, and enthusiastic individuals. All campers have the option to attend full or half-day camps. If your child is attending another camp on our campus during a different part of the day and you want him or her to attend Summer Camp for the remainder of the day, we will make arrangements for transfer to day camp.There will be weekly off-campus field trips or special treats as part of the afternoon Summer Camp experience. Campers attending off-campus trips must have a signed authorization on file in the Summer Camp office. This authorization is part of the online registration process and approval is granted electronically through the registration process.

Day Camps Course Descriptions

Week 1: June 4 - 8 (Course Number SC01) The Wild Animal Kingdom Big/small, short/tall, skinny/fat or in between - there are many different kinds of animals that share our world. This week we will investigate the animal kingdom looking at the various factors that make them part of a family.

Week 2: June 11 - 15 (Course Number SC02) Sports, Fun, and Games - The Physics of Sports There are many different sports that we play and many different types of balls. Do they all bounce the same way? Do they all even bounce at all? What makes them go so fast? What makes them go slowly? How do the big leaguers make the balls go so far? We will try to answer these questions, along with many others. Of course, we will have to experiment with the balls to figure out the answers. A trip to watch the Cincinnati Reds play one afternoon will let us see it all in action. Morning campers will be able to attend the game for an additional fee.

Week 3: June 18 - 22 (Course Number SC03) Take a Spin Across the Decades Campers this week will go back in time to learn about decades past. What it was like when their grandparents were growing up? Who were Elvis, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys? What is a pet rock? Time will fly as campers experience a decade a day. This week should be a “Far out”week!

Week 4: June 25 - 29 (Course Number SC04) Kids in the Kitchen This theme is SO popular that you have asked for it AGAIN! Do you like food? How about cooking the food? We will do lots of cooking and food preparation. Proper nutrition and making good food choices will be taught, as well as alternatives to after- school snacking. A trip to LaRosa’s to make your own pizza completes the week.

Week 5: July 2 - 6 (Course Number SC05) National Holidays of Other Countries (No camp July 4) In the USA we celebrate our independence on July 4th. When and how do other countries celebrate their founding? Let’s find out this week as we look at other countries and their biggest holidays. We will travel the globe to discover new ways to have some fun.

Week 6: July 9 - 13 (Course Number SC06) The Summit is Alive with The Sound of the World Choir Games The World Choir Games are coming to Cincinnati. Campers this week are going to explore different types of music and get a chance to learn and sing a new song or two. They will also learn about some famous composers and musicians.

Week 7: July 16 - 20 (Course Number SC07) Cruisin’ on the Ocean Pack your bag and bring your sun lotion. We are going to board our Summit ship and cruise the ocean blue. We may island hop and see where the ocean currents take us. Be prepared to get wet and get sand in your shoes. We promise you will not get stung by jelly fish!

Week 8: July 23 - 27 (Course Number SC08) The World of Art School is out and it is time to have some fun. Roll up your sleeves, put on an art shirt, and let’s get messy. This week young artists will explore a variety of art media and create some really cool projects. It’s time to let your inner Picasso or Monet out!

Week 9: July 30 – Aug. 3 (Course Number SC09) Who needs London? We Have the Olympics Too! The Summer Olympics occur every four years. This year they are being held in London, England. There is no need to buy a plane ticket and go across the ocean. Campers this week will learn all about the history of the Olympics and get to practice some of the same games as the Olympians. It should be fun and you never know - you may win a medal or two!

Week 10: Aug. 6 – 10 (Course Number SC10) Ancient Egyptian Studies The ancient Egyptian culture is one that has fascinated archeologists for hundreds of years. This week, campers will be introduced to the wonders of ancient Egypt through hands-on activities and games during which they will learn about mummies, pharaohs, and pyramids, as well as some of the art and customs of ancient Egypt.

Week 11: Aug. 13 – 17 (Course Number SC11) You name it week! On Monday, campers will decide what they want to do all week long. They will be invited to bring in their dolls for tea parties or trucks for one huge construction site! Perhaps your camper has a favorite game they want to share or a train set they want to build. Leaders will then plan activities that can be shared with the different campers over the week.

Summer Academic ClassesThe Summit Country Day School offers a wide variety of summer classes and specialty camps to offer students an opportunity to explore academic content, athletics and the arts in a fun, hands-on, interactive, safe environment on our Cincinnati campus. While Summit faculty will teach many of the academic, art and music offerings, notable professionals have been invited to campus for a number of special-interest studies.

Signing Safari: Grades K – 2 Which language is the most fun to learn? American Sign Language! Our Signing Safari adventure includes games, storytelling, finger-spelling, conversational signing, crafts, poetry, and imaginary play. The ASL alphabet and number system will also be learned and reinforced through real-life role-play.

Instructor: Melody Creech. Location: Lower School, 1st Floor. Course Number: SS05. Dates: June 4-8. Time: 9-11:30 a.m. Fee: $175.

Signing Safari: Grades 3 – 5 Instructor: Melody Creech. Location: Lower School- 1st floor. Course Number: SS06. Dates: June 4-8. Time: 1-3:30 p.m. Fee: $175.

Introduction to Chinese: Grades 1 – 4 For students who have not been to China or know little about it, this summer school class provides an excellent opportunity to learn the unique character of the Chinese language and its interesting and diverse culture. The two-week class will be conducted in a joyful and lively atmosphere, and will help the students to have basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture. The class will be centered on daily activities including learning Chinese, practicing songs and rhymes, and doing “hands-on” activities such as making crafts and foods, doing calligraphy, playing Taiji, and other Chinese board games. Instructor: Ying Zhao. Location: Middle School Room 204. Course Number: SS103. Dates: June

4–14 (No Fridays). Time: 9-11:30 a.m. Limit: Minimum of 6

Children Write The Future Writer’s Workshop Session I: Grades 1 – 4 This writer’s workshop is designed for students in grades 1-4. Students will have the opportunity to explore writing interests, discover strategies and learn more about the craft of writing with authors Sean and Cindy Platt. The summer writing project will provide students in-depth writing strategies, structured writing workshop time, flexibility in writing tasks and a week-long adventure through words. Topics will range from fantasy to autobiographical. Writers will promote the editing and revision process by working with peers and with direct feedback from instructors. Through the writer’s workshop model, students will grow in articulating ideas, making connections and experiencing confidence through the writing process. All students will have the opportunity to publish work on the Children Write The Future website. Our last day of camp will include a publishing celebration with friends and family. Maximum 14 students.

Financial decision making skills are critical for young people’s life skill development. In this class, students will discover how and why to “feed the piggy bank” as they develop sound saving, sharing, and spending habits. Students will be introduced to responsible financial decision making, identifying responsible and irresponsible decisions and their consequences. Students’ math skills will be reinforced through real-life application. The class will culminate with students creating personal financial plans in which they calculate the amount of earnings and savings needed to reach their goals. Summer Studies in the Latin Language Castra Latina! Grades 7 – 12 This “Latin Camp” is a four-week intensive study of the various disciplines in Greek and Roman studies. It is intended for motivated students, but remedial instruction is also available. The session is especially useful for students who plan to attend the National Junior Classical League Convention at Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem NC) from July 26-July 31. It is 16 days in all, Monday-Thursday, June 4-June 28. Each four-hour day (8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) is roughly divided into 4 parts. The first part of the morning (8:30-9:30 a.m.) is devoted to an independent study topic from classical civilization. Each student will pick an area of interest and explore it in greater detail. The second part of the day (9:30-10:30 a.m.) focuses on the study of the Latin language. Whether beginning or advanced, students will improve their comprehension of Latin vocabulary, grammar, syntax and translation through individualized instruction and small, student-led classes. The third part (10:30-11:30 a.m.) is a group session where the students will read excerpts from Greek and Latin authors to gain insight into Greco-Roman mythology, history and culture. In the final part of the day (11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), students again return to their independent study topics. This final period is also an opportunity for students to prepare for the various competitions at the National Convention (Certamen, art projects, creative art practice, etc.) Students may come to any or all of the session days/weeks. There is no problem with students coming for just a week, or arriving late or leaving early. The instruction will be geared towards ability and interest.Instructor: Larry Dean ([email protected]). Upper School Health: Grades 9 – 12Successful completion of this course satisfies the graduation requirements of The Summit as well as the State of Ohio by earning 0.5 credits. The summer health class would meet the typical sixty-hour course duration. The course includes all material covered in the semester class and includes a variety of assignments and assessments, including a comprehensive final exam and a research project. The workload is heavy and requires extensive reading and memorization. Students may expect to work up to four hours each day outside of class time and

should plan for full days of study over each week-end. Course credit requires a specific number of contact hours with the instructor and therefore students must be present for each session. Any student who misses more than 240 minutes (=1 day) for excused or unexcused reasons will need to repeat the course during the school year. Minimum of 7 students required. Chess Camp: Ages 5 – 15 Introductory-Advanced. This summer USA Chess is offering a fun and entertaining chess camp at Summit Country Day School. USA Chess is the largest premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is comprised of the finest children’s chess instructors in North America. Registration options include mornings, afternoon and all-day sessions. Campers experience chess instruction and play in a fun filled environment designed to improve their skills whether they are interested in casual or competitive chess. Tuition includes trophy, chess set and much more.

Introductory Video Game Creation: Ages 8 – 15 Introductory - Intermediate, MS Windows Starting with basic commands, campers will be taught in a step-by-step progression how to build a game that they design. Camp begins with an introduction to GameMaker software including adding rooms, building walls, adding backgrounds, warping to new levels, music, sound effects and many other great techniques. The first few days focus on programming basics and by late week the children are well on their way to creating their own unique game. At the end of camp each child is provided access to our custom download site. From this site they can download GameMaker LITE software, their games, our custom walk-through guide and resource folder. Campers can continue to develop their game and create new ones as well. Finally they will receive t-shirts, trophies and a certificate with photo.

Campers use GameMaker software to create a side-scrolling, platform game with running, jumping, falling, climbing, blasting, and enemy stomping! Students will learn how to program real world physics of gravity and friction, as well as plotting out head scratching mazes for themselves and other avid gamers to solve! Actual programming techniques will be used to create power-ups and saved game data during the journey. Each student’s game will be a unique adventure programmed entirely by him or her! Additionally campers receive access to our custom download site featuring thousands of games as well as a t-shirt, certificate with photo and a trophy. For more

Children Write The Future Writer’s Workshop Session II: Grades 1 – 4 This writer’s workshop is designed for students in grades 1-4. Students will have the opportunity to explore writing interests, discover strategies and learn more about the craft of writing with authors Sean and Cindy Platt. The summer writing project will provide students in-depth writing strategies, structured writing workshop time, flexibility in writing tasks and a week-long adventure through words. Topics will range from fantasy to autobiographical. Writers will promote the editing and revision process by working with peers and with direct feedback from instructors. Through the writer’s workshop model, students will grow in articulating ideas, making connections and experiencing confidence through the writing process. All students will have the opportunity to publish work on the Children Write The Future website. Our last day of camp will include a publishing celebration with friends and family. Introduction to Chinese: Grades 5 – 8 For students who have not been to China or know little about it, this summer school class provides an excellent opportunity to learn the unique character of the Chinese language and its interesting and diverse culture. Now You’re Cooking – Designing Solar Ovens: Grades 4 – 6 Students will explore energy and how heat energy from the sun can be harnessed by a solar cooker to heat food. Green engineers are concerned with designing technologies that have as little impact on the environment as possible. Key concepts include solar energy, life cycle assessments of engineered products, thermal insulators, and thermal conductors. Students will be given the challenge of creating a

well-insulated solar oven. They will test an array of materials to find the best thermal insulators and also will consider the environmental impacts of each material. Once students have tested and analyzed each material, they will design and test their own solar cookers. A minimum of 10 students is required with a maximum of 15. Exploring Architecture: Grades 5 – 6 Have fun while learning about the world of architecture, namely the built environment which provides the setting for most of our lives. High School Placement Test Prep Course: Grade 8 Every November the HSPT is given to thousands of 8th grade students applying for admission into Upper School. Most students do not properly prepare for the test even though the exam affects the admission process and scholarship opportunities for some area schools. Boys Lacrosse Camp: Grades K – 9 Under the direction of Pat Collura, Head Boy’s Lacrosse Coach for The Summit Silver Knights, 2005 OHSLA Coach of the Year, 2010 MSLCA Coach of the Year, and 2010 US Lacrosse Ohio South Man of the Year, all boys, grades Kindergarten through rising 9th graders are invited to attend Lacrosse camp. This camp will feature Skill Clinics and Game Play to help each player develop all facets of their game. Skills Clinics include; shooting, ground balls, defense, dodging, stick skills and face-offs. Camp staff will include All-Americans & Gettysburg graduates Dan and Paul Collura, current local college players, current Summit Lacrosse staff & prominent local high school coaches. Summer School Physical Education: Grades 9 – 12 A great opportunity for Upper School students! Complete 1/2 of your Upper School physical education requirement in two weeks and increase your fall schedule flexibility. Students will be exposed to lifetime sports and activities. Morning sessions include normal P.E. activities. Afternoon sessions include bowling, hiking, golf lessons, Frisbee golf, ice skating, biking (Loveland Bike Trail), swimming (Old Coney) and other activities to be determined. We have a limited number of spots (30) for participants, so please register early. Instructor: Jeff Stayton ([email protected]). Location: Holmes Gym. Course Number: PE01. Dates: Monday-Friday, July 9-20. Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Limit: 30. Fee: $525 includes transportation and fees.

Boys & Girls Soccer Camp: Grades K – 5 The K-5 Summer Soccer Camp is led by State Championship-winning Girls Varsity Coach Mike Fee. This camp is designed for boy and girl soccer players of all skill levels.

Players from the SCD boys and girls programs will guide the campers though each day. Throughout the week, each camper will be encouraged and cheered on! Traditionally, the camp ends a little early on Friday, so all campers can enjoy a refreshing smoothie together, courtesy of The Summit! The Grade 6 - 9 Players Academy: Grades 6 – 9 The Grade 6-9 Players Academy offers a glimpse of what it takes to play for a top notch boys or girls high school soccer program. Skills and training will be provided by Boys Varsity Coach Barnard Baker, mentor to several All-State players, a couple of All-Americans, and an MLS Superstar. Campers will benefit from instructional breakdowns through small-sided activities, as well as tactical and technical coaching points in bigger game situations. All-Players Academy campers should come ready for a challenge! Cheerleading Camp: Grades 3 – 8 Learn the fundamentals of cheerleading, new cheers, sideline chants and…a new dance routine! Learn something new each day as we work together as a team and also break out in smaller groups. Begin the 2012-2013 cheerleading season with confidence,

spirit and all new moves! Fee includes follow-up sessions with Heather to be scheduled as a team at a later date. If you are planning on being part of the cheerleading team, it is very helpful to be a part of the training and to learn the cheers. Uniform fees are not included in the fee for this camp. Cheerleaders not attending camp will be charged a training fee of $100 for the season. Coach: Heather Zumberg from Kids First Sports Center Location: The Summit Lower School Gym Course Number: SS14. The Details

Location: Summit Exploration Summer School classes and camps are held at various locations throughout our campus. Please refer to the course description for locations and details. If a location is not stated, signs will be posted on the first day of the class or camp.

Dress: It is expected that students dress appropriately for the class or camp.

Health Forms: All students (including current Summit students) are required to have a current health form on file. If the student is a current Summit student, the administrator will obtain this form from current records. If there is not a form on file please utilize the health information section on the registration site. It is the parent’s responsibility to notify camp staff of any allergies your child may have. Please notify Summer Day Camp faculty of any allergies your child has prior to the beginning of the summer session.

Medication: If your child must take medication during the time he or she is with us, you must complete a medication administration form. The “Dispensing of Medication Authorization” form can be found on The Summit’s web site under the “Parents” tab on the “Forms” page.

Photographs: We will be taking many photographs of the children throughout the summer to use for The Summit future publications. Please be sure to let us know if you do not want your child photographed.

Cancellation: The Summit Summer Day Camp reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment. Fees will be refunded if a class week is cancelled.

Refund Policy: Refunds for reasons other than above will only be granted if the request is made in writing to The Summit business office prior to May 21, 2012. Requests made after that date will not be granted; no exceptions. If the program enrollment has reached the maximum number of students, you will be notified and payment will be refunded.

Partial attendance: No refund or reduction in fees is possible for a child who arrives late, leaves early, or attends only part of a session

Discipline policy: It is expected that every student attending the Summit Exploration Summer School/Camps follow school procedures and standards of behavior. Consideration of others in thought and action is expected. The Summit reserves the right to require the withdrawal of any student who poses a discipline problem or a disruption to the learning process. No refunds will be issued for students who are asked to withdraw.
