Last-Minute Christmas Shopping Tips

Dec 20, 2012

SPARKS, Nev. -- With only a few more

shopping days left until Christmas, people are

racing against the clock to get their last minute

gifts and get them shipped in time.

"I always do my christmas shopping at the very

last minute. I'm terrible!" Catherine Oaks,

Director of Marketing at the Outlets at Legends

said.

She's not the only one. Whether it's a busy

schedule or the thrill people get from procrastination, it's still not too late to shop smart.

"Shop around, if you don't know what you're looking for, what you want to purchase, just try and

look at different stores and then compare," Oaks said. "You're going to get ideas that you didn't

have before."

Here is where some shoppers in Sparks start.

"I definitely hit the sales rack first then I got to what I think is the cutest."

"Well I think of one person and my goal is to imagine that person I'm looking for and I buy it."

"When I shop for my friends, I usually get them things that they normally wouldn't get

themselves, either it's something they want or if it's too expensive."

Those who think women are hard to shop for, here are some hints from the ladies themselves:

"Look for a scarf, look for maybe a hat and gloves, just something that can be practical this time

of year."

"My daughters love shoes so those are a great item."

Of course, it's hard to go wrong with a piece of jewelry, but if diamonds are a girl's best friend,

then what do guys want? A few men gave their two cents on the matter.

Page 12: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

"Anything like electronics like anything blue ray, DVDs."

Tools are also a popular favorite, but some prefer the classic gifts.

"I love socks and underwear."

Bigger isn't always better, especially if shoppers are on tight budgets .

"I would suggest getting a bunch of littler things...you know like buying a ring and a necklace or

mini sized things like perfume," said one shopper.

"Baked goods are always welcomed."

Shoppers also suggested gift cards, magazine subscriptions and food baskets are good gift ideas.

Sometimes, it pays off to wait. They also say some of the best deals are on Christmas Eve.

The general consensus is last minute shoppers should jot down a list of the people you're

shopping for and what you want to get them, but remember it's the thought that counts.

Most stores understand the stress of the holidays so they will be extending their hours this

weekend.

Legends, Scheels Donates Bikes to Area Children Dec 17, 2012

Children who attend the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows got a big donation today. Scheels donated a dozen new bikes for twelve children from Louis Allen and Sun Valley Elementary Schools. They received them at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

"I just wanted the bike, they're so awesome and cool!" eight-year-old Isiah told us. Legends and Scheels donated the bikes as part of their holiday effort to give back to the community.

Legends at Sparks Marina Food Donation Drive

Nov 21, 2012

Starting Thursday, the Legends at Sparks Marina will collect items for those in need.

"A lot of people cannot have a Thanksgiving Dinner or they cannot have a Christmas dinner or toys for

their children, so this is something we want to facilitate at Legends is allow foundations to come here so

that we can give back to the people that are in need," says director of marketing Catherine Oaks.

Legends is accepting donations of non-perishable food for the Evelyn Mount Foundation.

Barrels will be set up at the mall for people to donate for about the next 10 days. They hope to fill them

up every day.

You can also help re-stock Evelyn Mount's garage in person.

They're especially low on canned beans, mixed vegetables, mac and cheese, and of course turkeys.

Just drop off donations at 2530 Cannan Street until 8pm Wednesday.

Astute shoppers know that Reno retailers are already having sales and promotions, well before the Black Friday shopping frenzy. Even so, the big shopping malls and stores throughout the Truckee Meadows are flogging their Black Friday prices and coming up with all kinds of incentives, deals, and entertainment to attract spending at their establishments. They want your money and are competing for the limited number of dollars most of us have to spend during the holiday season.

Early openings on Black Friday are getting earlier. The Outlets at Legends in Sparks is doing 10 p.m. on

Thanksgiving Day, with many others throwing the doors open at midnight and well before sunrise. My Black Friday article is a good place to start if you plan on joining the fray.

Don't overlook our many locally-owned businesses for your holiday shopping. Supporting our neighborhood merchants is one of the best ways to boost the local economy and keep those dollars circulating right here in the Reno / Tahoe region.

Attention Local Business Owners - Tell us about your locally-owned business; how you got started, what you do, why people should do business with you, etc. Telling your story is a great way to attract new customers, and it's free.

'Tis the season (already?) and Christmas trees are about to light up the shopping malls and city streets.

The first big tree lighting and shopping parties start this weekend. Here are two places where you can enjoy the spectacle and get started on holiday shopping at the same time...

Tree Lighting Party at Legends - The big shopping center in Sparks will be throwing a party and lighting their big Christmas tree on Saturday, November 17. The shindig is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. There will be musical entertainment and Santa will be there to throw the switch. For those also interested in shopping, the holiday sales will be underway.

Lights Up at The Summit - The Summit's tree lighting starts at 6:30 p.m., also on Saturday, November 17. The celebration will be in the plaza next to Vans and Tilly's and includes a fireworks show, live entertainment, and an appearance by Santa Claus. There are sure to be plenty of "Sale" signs up, tempting you to start your holiday shopping.

City of Reno Holiday Tree - The annual Holiday Tree lighting will take place at City Plaza, across the street from City Hall and next to Rink on the River. The ceremony will be on Tuesday, November 20, and begins at 4:30 p.m. At about 5:15 p.m., the mayor will light the tree and Rink on the River will open for the season.

Once upon a time, these things didn't happen until after Thanksgiving Day. Alas, the times have changed and the consuming begins earlier and earlier.

Giving or Greedy: Are Black Friday Hours Too Early? Nov 13, 2012

RENO, Nev. - It's a day reserved for giving

thanks, but greed may be taking over as retail

stores plan to start their Black Friday deals on

Thanksgiving Day.

Larger retail stores like Walmart, Target and

Toys R Us plan to start their deals at 8 PM on

Thanksgiving. The Legend Outlet Mall will

open its doors early as well.

A manager at one of Legends' anchor stores,

who declined to give her name, says the early

hours are great for her business .

"Most of my business comes between 9 PM and 2 AM," she said. "Then there's a lull until

around 7 AM on Black Friday."

Though the extra hours may be good for business, some shoppers are reluctant to get on board.

" I don't think they should be opening on Thanksgiving," Jody Henderson of Sparks said. "I think

it's a day of giving thanks, and to go out and go shopping, I think it's too much."

Henderson says she avoids Black Friday, and thinks the early hours are taking away the meaning

of the holiday.

"People don't give thanks, they don't spend time with their families ," she said. "I feel sorry for

those families that have to work. I don't think they get to have Thanksgiving with their families."

But you may want to hold off on your pity. Some retail workers say they don't mind the extra

hours.

"Work is work especially in these time," Nic Diltz who works at Legends said. "Plus we get

extra pay."

This is the second year Diltz will work on Black Friday. He says most of the people he know in

retail understand it comes with the territory.

"We've all been in retail a long time," he said. "We know the earlier the better on Black Friday."

Diltz also says he still gets to eat dinner and spend time with his family before heading in for

his shift.

But some shoppers who like Black Friday are hesitant to get on board with the early hours.

"I'm definitely going to wait until Friday," Summer Benavidez of Reno said. "I don't think you

should skip out on your family time or Thanksgiving dinner to go get a deal."

Legends Mall Ushers In Holiday Season 11/11 10:29 am

Sparks, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com)-- The Legends Outlet Mall at the Sparks Marin brought in some

holiday cheer with the installation of what they're calling "northern Nevada's tallest cut Christmas tree."

The tree was installed at 9 am on November 11th, but won't be fully decorated until November 15th.

When the tree is finally decorated, it will be covered in over 10,000 white LED lights.

Officials with the outlet mall say they are looking forward to the holiday activities they have planned this

year, including the tree's decoration and annual lighting ceremony.

Scary And Safe: Tips To Keep Your Little Ghosts And

Princesses Safe While Trick-Or-Treating Oct 29, 2012

Trick-or-treating is a time-honored tradition in America, and some parents may be concerned to let their kids go door-to-door.

Deputy Armando Avina of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department offers a few tips so parents don’t have to be anxious about taking their children trick-or-treating.

“It’s a guarantee every adult has gone trick-or-treating before,” Avina said. But, he said, things have changed since then.

A child should always be supervised, if not by an adult, then by an older sibling who’s at least 16, Avina said. The adult should stay with the child at all times, especially when going up to the door. Never let children approach a car or another person because you don’t know who it is or what their plans might be.

Avina advised parents to watch out for traffic. Many more cars will be on the road for Halloween, and pedestrians need to stay aware.

Many more children have allergies to foods, such as peanuts and gluten. Avina suggested watching candy intake and making sure your child doesn’t eat any of the candy before getting home. Though no candy has been tampered with to his knowledge, as a parent of a child with allergies, Avina warned parents to be on the lookout for any unwanted ingredients or open candy.

Avina’s main emphasis for parents: Watch your children. Halloween is a fun time, but every parent needs to be aware of the possibilities.

Safe Trick or Treating Locations Oct 29, 2012

There are several places you can take your little ghosts or goblins for safe trick or treating this week.

This Halloween, the Outlets at Legends invites parents and kids to spend the evening trick or treating throughout the outlet.

In addition to the traditional candy and costumes, Legends will have free bounce houses and face painting for the kids. Come prepared for a night of fun with trick or treat bag in hand, costumes are required, but please no masks.

An alternative to a neighborhood trick or treat, parents and grandparents can enjoy the holiday while keeping the kids in sight. The Outlets at Legends will host the event on Wednesday, October 31st, from 5-7p.m.

If it's too cold for comfort, head over to the National Automobile Museum in Downtown Reno. Kids get to collect candy, and the whole family can check out more than 200 cars from the 20th century.

The event starts at 4:30 and goes until 7:30 Halloween night.

Admission is $2 per person.

Nevada Humane Society offers safe, indoor trick-or-treating that will be lots of Halloween fun. There will be spooky decorations, animals and staff in costume, and lots of yummy candy for children in costume. Children can trick-or-treat through the shelter from 4:00 – 7:00pm on Wednesday, October 31, picking up candy from staff and love vibes from the many dogs and cats.

You can even visit with four-legged ghosts and goblins in costume—maybe even take one home! Throughout October, you can adopt an adult cat or dog for the price you choose. All pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped.

Nevada Humane Society is open for pet adoption seven days a week Sunday through Friday from 11:0am – 6:30pm and on Saturday from 10:00am – 6:30pm. The shelter is located at 2825 Longley Lane in Reno. For more information on adopting a pet, please call 775-856-2000, ext. 302 or visit online at nevadahumanesociety.org.

Family Eyecare, in partnership with the Reno Host Lions Club, is sponsoring the Northern Nevada Trick-or-Treat for Sight Night that will take place on October 31st. Children are being encouraged to collect used pairs of eyeglasses as they go about their regular trick-or-treating activities. They can then drop the glasses off at Cochrane Family Eyecare, who will then forward them on to the Reno Host Lions Club. For every ten pairs of used glasses that a child brings in, he or she will receive a free pair of non-prescription children's sunglasses as a thank you gift. In order to make collecting the used eyewear easier, children are encouraged to leave a note on their neighbor's doors a few days before Halloween, explaining the event and asking the neighbors to have

Page 47: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

their glasses ready for pickup during trick-or-treating hours. A flyer can be printed from www.CochraneFamilyEyecare.com, or children can create their own.

Hope Community Church is holding its annual 'Trunk or Treat' event at Comstock Park in Double Diamond from 5pm-7pm. Kids can travel from vehicle-to-vehicle playing games and filling their bags with candy. They will have over 150 pounds of candy to give out!

For more information, go to http://encounterhope.org/

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office would like to remind families to inspect candy this Halloween. The Courthouse is offering free Halloween Candy X-rays on Halloween, October 31st or November 1st from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the 75 Court Street entrance.

Page 48: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

Last year for Halloween, the girls were a vampire and a vampire ladybug.

This year I’m not buying any new costumes so they have to make do with what we already have.

The oldest is trying to decide if she should be a plain ol’ vampire, a vampire angel, a vampire

ghost, a zombie, or a werewolf (notice a theme here?).

The little one has a fairy costume that she thinks is Sleeping Beauty. I’m not going to argue. I

have a feeling she will also incorporate vampire into her costume somehow.

Page 49: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

My role in Halloween is to apply the makeup, spray the glitter hairspray and make sure they are

safe when scaring the daylights out of anyone who dares cross their path.

How am I going to keep the kids safe while trick or treating you ask? Well, I’ll tell you.

Attend local events

Instead of going door to door on Halloween, see if your town/city has local events going on for

safe trick or treating. I’ve seen them at malls, churches, shopping centers, etc. This year I’m

taking my kids to the Outlets at Legends for their Safe Halloween Trick or Treating event which

will have bounce houses and face painting (both of which my kids l.o.v.e.). If you are in the

Reno/Sparks area this event is on 10/31 from 5-7pm. You should check it out.

Go in groups

If you are going to go door to door with the kids, have some other people go with you. Ask

neighbors, friends, the kids’ friends, family, whoever else you know that might be willing to

brave the chilly evenings for the sake of some candy. It’s safer to walk the streets with a group of

people than it is with just you and the kids.

Be selective with houses

Don’t go knock on the door of every. single. house. you pass. Before going up to the door, make

sure the house is well-light and that they have some Halloween decorations out (such as a carved

pumpkin). If the house looks questionable for whatever reason, don’t go to the door. Move on to

the next house.

Inspect all candy

My kids hate this part but I never let them eat any candy while we are out trick or treating. They

have to dump out their bags when we get home and I inspect every piece of candy before they

can have any. Suckers, tootsie rolls, and any other candy that can be easily opened and

rewrapped are thrown away. Also, anything that has a rip, tear, or some other problem with the

wrapper is in the do not eat pile. (Hint, hint…you can keep the Starbursts for yourself to use in

this Starburst Infused Vodka).

No masks

This last tip might not make the kids happy but I think safety is more important than happiness

so they just have to get over it (I’m such a mean mom). Anyway, masks should not be worn

when trick or treating along the streets. Masks can obstruct vision which can lead to all sorts of

badness (use your imagination here, you can do it).

Page 50: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

One year, my nephew was wearing a mask and since he couldn’t see that well he hit the hitch of

a boat nose first, thus ending his trick or treating for the evening. Needless to say there were a

ton of tears and a massive headache.

So my friends, there you have it….my 5 tips on how to keep your little vampires safe this spooky

holiday.

What will your kids be for Halloween this year and what will you do to ensure their safety?

Psst…on Tuesday, October 30th at 11am PST I will be on News4Forum talking about my safe

trick or treating tips. If you are around your computer at that time, you can watch live by clicking

Safe trick-or-treating around Reno

October 24, 2012

Worried about your kids being out on the streets for Halloween trick-or-treating? If so, there are

quite a few alternatives for safe (and mostly free) trick-or-treating in the Truckee Meadows.

Several of these safe trick-or-treating events take place on the weekend before Halloween, which

falls on a Wednesday. Some of these before the actual Halloween include Halloween Hollow in

Reno's Riverwalk District, Trick-or-Treat at the Discovery Museum, and a Harvest Party at

Idlewild Park.

On Halloween, take the kids to Trick-or-Treat in the Streets of the National Automobile

Museum, the Legends at Sparks Marina, or perhaps Safe Trick-or-Treating at the Nevada

Humane Society.

To see more of your choices, refer to "Safe and Free Trick-or-Treating in Reno."

For Halloween fun with more of an edge, perhaps ghost hunting would be of interest. We have

plenty of haunted places around Reno and northern Nevada where the spirits are said to dwell.

Distribution Hiring Boosts Holiday Effect

John Seelmeyer, 10/22/2012

While many retailers are just getting serious about hiring of temporary employees for the holiday rush, expectation of stronger sales this year has been boosting the region’s economy for several months.

The distribution business — both wholesale as well as the new Internet fulfillment centers that have landed in the region — supercharge the importance of holiday employment in Reno, Sparks and Fernley.

The warehouses that ship pallets of merchandise to fill the shelves of retailers in California and throughout the West stepped up their hiring several months ago as they began filling their racks, says John Parel, business services manager for Nevada JobConnect in northern Nevada.

The hiring in warehouses appears to have begun a few weeks earlier than usual this year as wholesale outfits expect larger orders through the fourth quarter, adds Wayne Irvine, supervisor of the job bank in the JobConnect office in Reno.

A second wave of hiring — including some big numbers — now is beginning in the fulfillment centers that fill Internet orders directly from consumers.

Amazon.com, for instance, will be hiring about 1,250 seasonal employees for its fulfillment center at Fernley, says the Retail Association of Nevada. (Integrity Staffing Solutions, a company headquartered at Wilmington, Del., handles that staffing through its hiring office in Reno.) That’s a hiring pattern that’s more typical for retailers — a role that Amazon fills — than traditional warehouses that fill wholesale orders.

Toy ‘R’ Us, which fills Internet orders from consumers as well as store-stocking orders from its retail locations from its distribution center at Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, has said that it be adding an unspecified number of seasonal workers at the warehouse. Statewide, Toy ‘R’ Us expects to hire 250 seasonal workers for the distribution center as well as its retail locations.

Urban Outfitters, which opened its Internet fulfillment center in Stead with 70 workers this fall, expects that holiday-season employment will reach 120.

Webgistix, which opened an Internet fulfillment center in Sparks this year to handle orders for smaller retailers, says it’s seeing significant increases in its clients’ inventories as they anticipate a strong holiday season.

The company says it’s staffing up to meet a strong flow of orders, but it doesn’t yet know how many workers it will need to meet demand. Along with the holiday growth, Webgistix has landed seven new

Page 57: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

clients who will be moving their inventories to the Sparks facility in coming weeks. The hiring in traditional warehouses and Internet fulfillment centers is expected to continue.

“We have several warehouse clients gearing up for the holiday season, which should run through the end of the year. We expect additional hiring for the season to begin later this month,” says Susan Fix, community liaison partner for The Applied Companies of Reno, which provides staffing services.

Retailers, meanwhile, are walking a thin line as they staff up for the holidays.

On one hand, says Irvine at the JobConnect office, continued tight margins mean that retailers often want to delay hiring as long as possible. Bringing on holiday help even a week later can boost profits.

But competition for workers with strong customer-service skills has grown more intense in the past year, says Parel, because the many call centers that are opening in the region also are recruiting employees with those skills.

Still, the potential workforce for holiday positions swells with the addition of students on holiday breaks and retirees and others who return to the workforce for a few weeks to make a little extra cash.

The majority of retailers at Legends at Sparks Marina already have their holiday staffs in place and they’ve generally looked to hire experienced temporary workers from past seasons, says Dennis McGovern, general manager of the center.

Opening of Lowe’s Home Improvement and TJ Maxx stores have added to the employment base at Legends, and McGovern says existing retailers have been heartened by center-wide sales increases in 11 of the past 12 months.

Spirits among retailers at The Summit, meanwhile, have been buoyed by center-wide sales increases that have reached double-digits in percentage terms, says Darryl Whitehead, general manager of the south-Reno center.

He says major stores in the center have largely completed their holiday staffing, although some smaller retailers continue to hire.

The Retail Association of Nevada estimates that holiday hiring statewide will run somewhere between last year’s 4,100 jobs and the historical average of 5,000 jobs.

Throughout the region, the number of holiday workers is likely to be up at least a bit from last year’s numbers, Parel says. “Employers are really optimistic,” he says.

Legends Shopping Center Has Six Projects Under Way Sep 16, 2012

The pieces of the puzzle at the Outlets at Legends in Sparks are falling into place after financial delays.

Six projects across the shopping center are in various stages of construction, including a T.J. Maxx, IMAX theater and a Walmart.

“With the refinancing in place, we just have all these pieces of the puzzle that need to fit together to complete the project,” said Robyn Young, vice president of marketing and communications for RED Development LLC. “That’s truly what we are trying to do at this point and time.”

Kansas-based company RED Development LLC, developer of the shopping center, went through a refinancing deal in early June after defaulting on a $141 million construction loan in January.

The deal allowed for more than $30 million in investments, including development of more than 300,000 square feet of new retail space.

Page 107: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

“It’s been very positive for our regional economy that folks are willing to make these investments again here in the overall regional market,” said Shaun Carey, Sparks city manager. “It’s good news for everyone.”

Young said that it was an important turning point for the project, which was in neutral because of recession and the financial crisis.

“Everybody is going to benefit from a fully realized, completed project, and we’re back on the road to make it happen,” she said.

Legends is one of the few Northern Nevada construction projects to pick up since the economic downturn. Recent openings include the Lowe’s and Discount Tires earlier this year.

More than 50 businesses are part of the 148-acre shopping center.

Since the announcement of the refinancing and Walmart signing a contract with Legends, other businesses have expressed interest in moving into the center.

The anchor space, which formerly housed Saks Off Fifth, also could be occupied after nearly two years sitting vacant, Young said.

“It’s been really exciting for us to see all the momentum of the project,” she said.

The difference between this current application and previous plans is that they are fully approved for financing, said Jeff McMahon, managing partner for RED Development.

It is a sign that the market is showing some strength and movement, after coming to a standstill.

RED Development builds and manages 37 retail, commercial and mixed-used properties in 12 states.

“The recession hits a lot of retailers across the country,” Carey said. “It’s been a very difficult time. We (are) very proud of RED’s efforts to move forward and refinance this project.”

Progress of the stores

Construction can be seen throughout the property.

Next to the Target, the new 24,800-square-foot T.J. Maxx is on schedule for a November opening date.

The store will hire 100 to 110, and a job fair will be held Sept. 27-29, said Dennis McGovern, Legends general manager.

“That is an extremely popular store,” he said. “It brings a category to the center that we really don’t have right now, and we’re excited about that.”

Similar progress is being made on the Old Navy Outlet next to Best Buy.

Page 108: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

The 12,500-square-foot outlet would be the first in Northern Nevada, and it will open in early 2013.

Rue 21, a youth clothing retailer, also joins the center in a spot next to Guess Factory Store.

The hope is to have that store open for the holiday shopping season, McGovern said.

A Taco Bell is scheduled to be open in late October, offering shoppers more food options.

The discount retailers and brand-name stores fit into the shopping center’s mix to create a modern shopping center where people can spend the day, Legends officials said.

“The thing that makes the Legends really unique is the combination of retail, dining and entertainment uses that all come together and create this ‘something for everyone’ mix,” Young said.

Part of the mix is the much-anticipated Galaxy IMAX theater.

“We know that the theater is a long time coming, but we are planning on starting construction in the beginning of 2013,” Young said.

Officials are looking for a fall opening date of the 12-screen theater.

Its application is going through the approval process from the city of Sparks.

The developer, Galaxy officials and city staff are evaluating the compliance of movie theater plans against the development handbook.

The development handbook addresses signage, roads and finishes of businesses within the project.

Carey, the city manager, said no timeline is in place for when the proposal would be heard by the city planning commission, Carey said.

The public will be able to comment about the theater plans at the meeting.

If the planning commission approves the application, the developers are free to begin construction.

It will only be brought up to City Council if it is appealed.

“It is wonderful to see (the theater) come to fruition,” Carey said. “It has been a desired element of the project. It will most certainly provide a better shopping experience.”

The newest store will be the addition of a 150,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter in the northwest part of the site along Lincoln Way. Walmart hasn’t submitted an application to the city yet and is the process of developing plans.

RED Development had planned to have Walmart since the inception of the project in the mid-2000s, and it was in the handbook submitted to the city.

Page 109: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

Legends was designed with the outlets and Scheels in the core, while the larger retailers such as Walmart, Lowe’s and Target surrounding the center, Carey said.

“With choosing our location, our real estate selection process is really centered on being able to provide communities access to jobs and affordable food,” said Daniel Morales, Walmart spokesman. “We think we can do this at this location.”

If all goes according to plans, the store should be open by the end of 2014.

It will employ about 300 people.

It will be the seventh Walmart in the Reno-Sparks area. It will offer a full grocery department, general merchandise and pharmacy.

“We think our customers always appreciate having more affordable options close to where they might live or where they work,” Morales said. “Residents may currently have a number of options available, but they might not always provide a wide array of either healthier or more affordable choices.”

Positive news

The center has struggled to fulfill its financial obligations, including semi-annual sales-tax backed STAR bond payments.

The bonds allowed developers to use up to 75 percent of sales taxes collected in the development to pay off debt.

During the last fiscal year, ending on July 1, the sales taxes collection was up 4 percent in Sparks, Carey said.

Sparks issued RED development $116 million for the $400 million project, which officially opened in 2009.

The construction loan refinancing consolidated the project creditors to Ohio-based KeyBank and provided addition investment funds.

“It was like hitting the reset button,” McMahon said.

The company can complete its vision for the center that will draw both tourists and locals.

Legends has become a community gathering place with many events being held in collaboration with the city and other businesses, from special events parking to holiday gatherings.

RED Development and Legends officials are optimistic about the future of the center.

“The first phase of what we did — we did an incredibly great job of providing brand and value with the outlet piece of it,” McGovern said. “Now, what we are getting to is the piece that is going to make us ‘something for everyone,’ a true destination.”

Crawfish Harvest Keeps Lake Tahoe Blue, Feeds Locals

8/25 5:02 pm

SPARKS, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- It

may not be Mardi Gras, but the Legends at

Sparks Marina has an extra taste of

Louisiana fare today at the 2nd Annual

Crawfish Festival, and this year they're

offering local crawfish.

"Our business is clarity by cuisine, so the

more these locals consume the crawfish,

the better it is for the lake and it's just an

awesome deal," said Fred Jackson, owner

of Tahoe Lobster Company.

Jackson's business is removing crawfish - an

invasive species - from Lake Tahoe.

"Initially I said you're crazy," said Justin Pulliam, Jackson's nephew and company chief operating

officer. "About a year into it I said okay let's do it."

Nevada state law used to prevented a business like this from forming.

"It said you couldn't have any sales of crawfish from Lake Tahoe, so we asked why," Jackson said. "And

now we're here. They couldn't answer why."

Jackson says they couldn't have done it without the help of UNR Associate Professor Sudeep Chandra.

"Keeping the lake clear or blue is inherently tied to the biology that's in the system, and so trying to

keep the system in balance with native species versus those non- native species is absolutely critical,"

Page 118: 2012 Outlet At Legends Media Placements

Chandra said.

So far they've harvested about 35-50 thousand crawfish and not only does it help to keep Lake Tahoe

blue, it also helps the local economy.

"It's just kind of a win win for everyone," said Vic Allred, owner of Jazz a Louisiana Kitchen. "The

environmentalists are happy. The businessment are happy."

Allred featured the tahoe crawish at Jazz's 2nd Annual Crawfish Festival - just two days after they were

harvested.

"This year we're serving live crawfish straight out of Lake Tahoe," Allred said. "We're so excited about

it."

The customers seem excited too. That response combined with a year-round harvesting season means

the guys at Tahoe Lobster Company have their work cut out for them.

"I see this business exploding really," Pulliam said. "It's going to expand and we're going to be working

night and day pretty much."

"Well we're going to need a bigger boat," Jackson said. "It sounds like "Jaws" but we're going to need a

bigger boat that's for sure and this spring we'll be hiring folks to team up with myself and Justin and my

wife, and go out and start learning the business and start fishing with us."

If you'd like to give the Tahoe crawfish a try, the crawfish festival outside of Jazz is open until 8p.m.

Preparing Families In Need for New School Year

Aug 18, 2012

The new traditional school year is fast approaching, and some less-fortunate children in our community are getting some help along the way. The Salvation Army helps families year-around, and a part of their mission is getting more than 600 kids ready for the new school year. One by one, Washoe County students grabbed hygiene products, clothing and school supplies to take home. "We thought we were going to start the school year off with nothing. So, it helps a lot that we got a lot of stuff," says 12-year-old Anna-Marie Ochoa. Everything, including hundreds of backpacks, were collected through donations from the community. "The backpacks we see are brand name," says Maj. Janene Zielinski with the Salvation Army. "So, the kids can be proud of what they're carrying around." Each student received about $100 worth of supplies, and the kids know how much it means to their parents. "My mom doesn't have to worry about the stress anymore because I mean, she's running around. She's trying to get the money, but she doesn't really have the money. So, this helps a lot," says Ochoa. Getting ready for a new school year takes quite a bit of time and effort, and not all the steps are enjoyable. Meeting immunization requirements requires a needle or two. Washoe County offered free shots to around 200 kids in five hours on Saturday. "A lot of times, it kind of gets put to the side because of the cost or because of the time involved," says Heidi Parker with Immunize Nevada. Immunization shots aren't cheap these days, especially if you have more than one kid. Which is why hundreds waited in line for hours. "I was really stressing of how I was going to afford to do shots because I've noticed they've went up in prices," says Jaime Fertal. "When I saw this, I was like, 'Oh, thank God.'" Thanks to the Salvation Army and Washoe County, plenty of area families are ready for the new school year, which is quickly approaching. "We always hear from parents how much they appreciate us being able to do this," says Parker. The first day of school is one week from Monday.
