Welcome to The Duluth Superior Film Festival (DSFF)- the Twin Ports area premiere film, music, and art festival!

You’ll notice a few changes around the film festival this year. We’ve got a new name, some new venues, new sponsors, and some new faces helping out. We’ve also decided to take a closer look at films written, directed, produced, and shot right here in our backyard. You’ll see considerably more films with the ‘Made In MN or WI!’ tag on them this year. We thought it was a good time for us to showcase the best that the region has to offer. I’m sure you’ll be thrilled by the quality of films being made throughout the Northland. Don’t worry, we’ve still got a great line-up of international hits and festival darlings, as well as our usual numerous visiting filmmakers in attendance, some of the hottest Twin Cities and Duluth buzz bands, and special festival parties/events.

THE BLACK EYED SNAKES: The Black-eyed Snakes is an American blues rock band from Duluth, Minnesota. Since releasing their debut album "It's the Black-eyed Snakes" in 2001, the band has toured the U.S. with Charlie Parr. Front man Alan Sparhawk also performs with Low and Retribution Gospel Choir.

The Black-eyed Snakes often perform at the Homegrown Music Festival in Duluth, Minnesota. Black-eyed Snakes was selected by City Pages as the Best New Band of 2001. Their attitude towards the blues is summed up by Sparhawk: "We actually hate most blues. We were trying to destroy it. We're interested in putting the blues back into a gut level -- instead of talent, we go with feeling more.''

Music Line-UpTANGIER 57: Tangier 57 is an evolution. Originally a vehicle to explore the lost arts of lounge-exotica-elevator music, our musical fellowship has expanded, retracted morphed and congealed many times. Always guided by the seemingly oppositional axioms of “exploration” and “holding it back for the ladies”, Tangier 57 is propelled by duality. At our core is a reverence for the subtle and a reliance on the blunt .. a musical walking softly and carrying a big stick.

Some have called us Lawrence Welk meets Pink Floyd … others have described us as psychedelic elevator music with a mojito spilled on it. What ever they say, for us, it’s about musical freedom, ongoing fellowship and experimental mixology. Also available for kids parties and Bar Mitzvahs.

MAUDLIN: The band is a blitz of post punk, guitar smashing, wreck the train Rock and Roll that has not been seen since the glory days of CBGB. Behind all the Rock and Roll stance is a band with big brains and big hearts.

PLANEMO: A planetary-mass object, PMO, or planemo is a celestial object with a mass that falls within the range of the definition of a planet: massive enough to achieve hydrostatic equilibrium (to be rounded under its own gravity), but not enough to sustain core fusion like a star. By definition, all planets are planetary-mass objects, but the purpose of the term is to describe objects which do not conform to typical expectations for a planet. These include dwarf planets, the larger moons, free-floating planets not orbiting a star, such as rogue planets ejected from their system, and objects that formed through cloud-collapse rather than accretion (sometimes called sub-brown dwarfs).

The unique and often harrowing experiences behind the scenes created a portal for the public to fully understand the mechanisms involved in the entertainment industry. What started as a behind the scenes shoot turned into a full on catastrophe, all in front of our camera. In that sense, this movie was purely accidental. Augmented with hand-drawn animation to fill in the gaps, this film turned out to be a unique project for us all.

MADE IN MN!When Ian Harvey set out to row across Lake Superior for charity in 2005, they called him 'The Crazy Irishman' crazy to row 400 miles in a single scull boat across the largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Superior or Gitchie Gumie is so cold and deep it's said it never gives up its dead. It's where the 729 foot Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in a storm with all of her 29 crew, it’s where the American poet Longfellow was inspired to write 'The Song of Hiawatha.'

The Chippewa or Ojibwa Indians who live around the lake followed Ian Harvey’s dramatic row which took 8 days and two nights. When Ian reached Grand Island, members of the Bear Clan went to meet him. On the jetty in Munising, Kris LeVeque felt an instant connection between Ian and her legendary ancestors who'd made a similar journey in the early 1800's to fight the Chippewa’s deadly enemy The Sioux. The connection was so strong that the LeVeque family invited Ian to be adopted into their Bear Clan and become a blood brother.

LOW: YOU MAY NEED A MURDERER

Thursday, May 31 • 7:00 PM •ZINEMADuluth band Low has been blessed by many films over the years, with fine work from Marc Gartman, Sebastian Schrade, Phil Harder, and others. But one film stands above the pack. You May Need a Murderer, directed by Dutchman David Kleijwegt, is both the best film about Low and one of the best films about Duluth.

Shot for Dutch television around 2006, You May Need a Murderer catches Low in a post-apocalyptic haze. "The Great Destroyer" era, with its songs about going deaf and walking into the sea, its canceled tours and other drama, has passed. What now?

Here we see Alan Sparhawk developing songs that would be on "Drums and Guns," and rocking with an early form of the Retribution Gospel Choir, while Mimi Parker endures as the anchor. Sparhawk's apocalypticism does resurface: he quotes the LDS Doctrine and Covenants, and discusses 9/11 and his harrowing song "Murderer." But, life goes on -- witness the counterpoint of "When I Go Deaf" with Sparhawk out for a jog.

Murderer has few peers among films depicting deep, conflicted love for Duluth, though Venus of Mars and Far North come to mind. Like those films, Murderer depicts a creative individual not in sync with the region's reigning disappear-into-the-woods romanticism. Murderer's finest moments include what first seem like filler: a reference to Duluth as Timbuktu, scenes of Sparhawk on the Point of Rocks. Yet these rank with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's and F.
