ON SATURDAY, MAY 5, 2012, the MemorialHermann Foundation hosted its annual Circleof Life Gala at the Hilton Americas. More than1,600 guests attended this year’s Gala, “C’estla Vie,” which was chaired by Ann andClarence Cazalot and raised more than $2.7million to benefit The Texas Trauma Instituteat Memorial Hermann – Texas MedicalCenter. Top underwriters included Ann andClarence Cazalot, Will Galtney and Family,the Donald Keith Mosing II Foundation, J.Doug Pitcock, Jr. and Smyser Kaplan &Veselka, L.L.P.
The 2012 Circle of Life Gala honored Amegy Bank of TexasChairman and Founder, WalterJohnson. In 2007, Walter lent his time and talents to MemorialHermann when he co-chaired the successful Campaign for Life Flight®.Under Walter’s leadership, MemorialHermann raised $40 million in onlyeighteen months to replace andexpand the Memorial Hermann Life Flight fleet. Walter is currently serving as a member of theRevolutionizing Neuroscience Cabinet,which is actively raising $100 millionfor neuroscience programs atMemorial Hermann and UTHealth.

THOUSANDS OF ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLESCHOOL STUDENTS in the Houston Heights area will benefit from Marathon Oil Corporation’s generousgift to Memorial Hermann’s Health Centers for Schoolsprogram. The Hogg Health Center, a school-based clinic operated by Memorial Hermann, provides uninsured and underinsured children access to medical, nutritional, dental and mental health services. After more than 20 years, however, the building had grown old and there was not enough space to adequately provide care.
Marathon’s donation toward the much needed replacement facility has made it possible to build a new, custom designed modular building, outfitted to suit the clinic’s needs. On March 22, 2012, DanWolterman, Memorial Hermann President & CEO, hosted a celebration to recognize Marathon Oil’s contribution. Marathon Oil President & CEO ClarenceCazalot and executives Paul Weeditz, Dr. Brian Linder and Donna Boyer joined Mr. Wolterman to tour and dedicate the new building.
Clarence Cazalot remarked, “Education and health –healthy minds and healthy bodies – are two key focusareas of our Company’s philanthropic giving, so the Hogg Health Center is an ideal fit for us. We are verypleased to provide Marathon Oil’s support of this vital health facility.”

ON MAY 7, 2012, SHERRY AND JIM SMITH,along with family and friends, celebrated the naming of a Life Flight® helicopter in their family’shonor. The Jim R. Smith Family helicopter paystribute to the Smith’s generosity and steadfast support of Memorial Hermann. Most recently, the Smith family made a significant contributionto the Revolutionizing Neuroscience initiative.
Memorial Hermann President and CEO, Dan Wolterman, presented Jim with a plaque commemorating the dedication. During hisremarks, he noted Jim’s efforts as Vice Chairmanfor the $40 million Campaign for Life Flight saying that, “it’s safe to say we could not have completed it without him.”
Sherry and Jim were joined by all three of theirchildren, Tracey, Kathy and Jim, Jr. (Rusty), as wellas their spouses. Jim and Rusty were treated to anaerial tour of the Medical Center and MuseumDistrict, riding in the helicopter that now bearstheir family name.
“Our parents taught us what ‘community’ reallymeans,” said Tracey Smith Hassett. “We are deeplymoved by today’s recognition of their service toMemorial Hermann.”

Trauma is the neglected disease of modern society and annually impacts hundreds of thousands of lives in our nation.Currently, trauma is the leading cause of death for ages 1-44. By 2020, trauma injury is projected to be the leading cause ofdeath worldwide.
With the support of our community, Memorial Hermann physicians will be able to conduct crucial research to improve trauma systems, assessment, triage, resuscitation and emergency care.
The Texas Trauma Institute is Texas’ first and only trauma institute which will research, develop and implement novel medical technologies to improve survivability and quality of life for injured patients.

THE MEMORIAL HERMANN FOUNDATION recently receiveda generous gift from Nicole and Evan H. Katz in support of thenewly established Texas Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann- Texas Medical Center and its director, Dr. John Holcomb. The$85,000 contribution has been designated for the purchase of anintravascular ultrasound machine (IVUS).The gift sprung from a personal tragedy in the Katz family.
In 1988, Lenny Katz, younger brother of Evan, was injured in a single car accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He is still in a coma. Over the years, the Katzes have given generously to help make
advances for people who suffer with brain injury. The family has been a staunch advocate for the advancement of trauma andneurological research. To this day, the Katz family finds meaningand purpose in supporting transformational research to benefit the victims of trauma.Today, trauma injury remains the leading cause of death and
disability for Americans under the age of 44, with one occurringevery four seconds.The IVUS is a vital addition to the Trauma Institute. The
machine allows the trauma team to act quickly at the bedside, minimizing the need to move a critical patient. The new, portable ultrasound makes it possible to see inside blood vessels and enables trauma surgeons to insert a filter directlyinto the vena cava, preventing life-threatening blood clots. “The machine is truly amazing,” said Evan Katz. “I was totally thrilled to see the

The evening celebrated the launch of Heroes in Health, a new advocacy and membership program supportingMemorial Hermann’s exceptional physicians, facilities,programs and researchers.
The Heroes in Health initiative is being spearheaded by an energetic steering committee comprised of young professionals including host,Christine Falgout. Dan Wolterman, MemorialHermann President & CEO, alongside many otherMemorial Hermann senior executives and physicianswere in attendance to show their support and champion the mission of Heroes in Health.
