“FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS”

Have a great month! August 2012

Angel of August

She’s regal in splendor,

this angel of love.

Cascading her flowers from heaven above.

To fall from the sky, to land with her peace

The angel of August

Her heart always seeks

The flowers you gather, that fall from the sky

Her gift of the spirit

That soars way up high.

A scent in the air, a petal that lands

In velvet she greets you

Wherever you stand

She touches your soul, with all of her love

Sprinkles her softness

With joy from above

Look up to the sky, to see heaven’s light

It’s the angel of August

That gives such delight

So far this summer season we have not been threatened by any hurricane’s etc. We are blessed to be living in such a protected area away from all the high waters and the coastal areas that do get hit the most. We have had our occasions of hard rain with thunder and lightning from tropical storm Debbie.

Please heed warnings you are given by the media on radio or tv.

Everyone who lives here in Florida knows that we are the lightning capital of the USA. So if you are in the pool area and it looks like rain or you hear the thunder, we are advising you to get out of the pool area immediately. Also, tell your visitors or family about this situation.

The pool area was struck by lightning just a few years back, so please be cautious.

Better to be safe then sorry!!!!!!!!

New Residents

No new residents for this month!!!!!

Welcome to our Community of Southfork!

Safety reminder

Just a reminder for all residents of Southfork Community about ladder safety. As senior citizens we

should be extra careful when using a ladder. We should try to have someone with us at all times while

we’re on the ladder in case of dizziness etc. and you fall.

If this is not possible, having a cell phone in your pocket may come in handy if you are able to call for

assistance.

We have had a couple of serious accidents involving ladders & stools in the past couple of years and

hopefully we will not have any more.

Please Do Your Part!

Recycling is one way to help us live sustainably in our communities. Here is one fact

about a recyclable material.

Recycling an aluminum can takes 95% less energy than making a new one. A new

can has to first be extracted from the ground and the natural resource converted to

the product. Aluminum can be recycled over and over. Doesn’t that make more

sense than burying it or trashing it?

Pasco County’s “Blue Bag" curbside residential recycling program is a voluntary program

and it’s EASY.

If you don’t use dumpster service, you may use a drop-off. There are six (6) recyclable

item drop-offs and over one hundred (100) paper drop-offs countywide. Please visit

www.pascocountyutilities.com and click on the recycling link for drop-off information.

In Pasco we recycle #1 Pete and #2 HDPE plastics, aluminum and metal food cans, and

clear, green and brown glass. Blue bags can be purchased at Pasco area grocery stores and

at some local “super store” retailers.

Check your calendar on the last page of the newsletter for the scheduled Saturday pickup of

:

Glass, clear, brown and green bottles and jars.

Cans: tin, steel and aluminum

Plastic: Containers from non-hazardous liquids only, #1 PETE and #2 HDPE.

Place your blue bags at the curb the night before your pickup day.

From the Managers

New Office Hours

Effective July 30 we will be changing our office hours to 10:00 – 3:30, Monday through Thursday and

10:00 – 12:00 on Friday. We plan to be out and about in the park from 9:00 – 10:00 most mornings. In

case of emergency, you can still reach us at 352-206-4080.

Southfork Video

Be on the lookout for a new video on Southfork starring: Kathy and the line dancers; John and the

shuffleboarders; the “dominoes ladies”; and the “Bingo crew”, with a cameo appearance by Marielle in a

“drive-by” shoot. The video will eventually be posted on our website when it is finished. We’ll let you

know when it is up for viewing.

We would like to thanks all the “stars” that helped make this video. Unfortunately, due to the weather,

we were not able to do a pool shoot so, to complete the video we will be scheduling a “pool party”

sometime in the next few weeks. We will post notices once we get that scheduled.

That’s it for this month. See you around the park!

John & Sandi

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

We will be collecting school supplies for the Dade City elementary schools

again this month. Watch your local newspapers for the school supply

discounts.

The box is in the main room of the clubhouse. Your usual response will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Women’s Club, Charity committee

Women’s Club

The meeting of July 4th was cancelled because it was on the same day as Independence

Day.

On Wednesday, August 1st at 10:30am we will go to the Village Inn in Zephryhills. Please sign

up at the clubhouse so we know approximately how many will be attending.

On July 10th we had a memorial luncheon/reception for our beloved resident Claire Cox. The

ladies once again were very generous and the club bought the cold cuts and the members

brought all kinds of salads, deviled eggs, rolls, chips, a nice veggie tray and all kinds of desserts.

We had lots of food. This meal was co-ordinated by Marge Otto, head of the memorial

committee assisted by Mary Bolin. I want to thank all of you because we could not have done it

without your help and support. Claire will be missed----she was a faithful bingo player and

loved to play Hand & Foot. We will miss her smile and wit. She was a very classy lady.

We have a box in the clubhouse for the school supplies for the needy. I would like to see this

box full, so please help.

See you around and don’t forget to sign up for August 1st meeting.

Thank you,

Marielle, President

BINGO

As of now you all know that Phil McPheron resigned from being our bingo caller.

Phil did this for many years………He was a very good caller and he will be missed!

Dear Friends and Neighbors

Greetings from Maine!

I will be here until early September. My youngest daughter will have major surgery on July 18th.

Hopefully she will be recovered in time for her oldest daughter’s wedding on August 25th. The bride

groom’s mom will also be having major surgery on July 30th. Please keep them both in your prayers.

In the meantime, I will be helping her family prepare for the big event.

The weather here is almost the same as Dade City, Hot and Humid!

Miss you all, Dot

The Early Bird

We all know the early bird Catches the worm, But here in Florida, the early bird

Takes on a different term.

Tonight we are in for a special treat --- My honey and I, are going out to eat.

C'mon Dear, shake a leg, step it up another peg. If you don't hurry we'll have to pay more, and I won't

enjoy that, that's for sure.

C'mon please, look like you're alive, you know the early bird ends at five.

Besides, I'm so hungry I could eat a cow, can't you please get ready right now?

I'm cutting the coupon out of the paper, you're takin your time, Is putting me in a fix.

Oh, Oh Honey, take it easy, the early bird doesn't end till six.

Questions & Answers

Q. Why is it that it’s so much easier to get along with your grandkids

than it was to get along with your kids when they were a similar age?

A. Because you and your grandkids have the same opponent!

VACATION

We were away for vacation for 10 days up in Western New York,

outside of Buffalo and we thought we would leave some of our heat

but found that the North was hotter than Florida.

We stayed overnight in Columbia, SC on the first night of our travel

and when we got there it was 104 degrees and I could not believe it.

You could actually fry an egg on the pavements!

It is so nice to get away but there is nothing like our home here in Southfork and

we really missed it here. We don’t want to go away anytime soon!!!!

The gas prices were terrible with South Carolina being the cheapest @ $3.09 a

gallon and western New York was $3.65. From Georgia all the way to Western

New York prices were on the average of $3.25 and higher.

We had a great time visiting all of our friends and relatives and 2 of our children

met up with us and we had a great re-union.

Age tells the story!

When Rex was younger, he used to do push-ups, sit-ups

and pull-ups every morning to get in shape.

He still does them, but now it’s to put on his shirt, pants

and shoes!!!! THEY NOW CALL THEM NOW THE GOLDEN YEARS!!!!!

“DO NOT CALL”

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that since I have been on the ‘DO NOT CALL”

registry the number of calls that I am getting has increased.

The below calls are permitted while your number is on the Do Not Call List.

1. Calls for or on behalf of political organizations

2. Charities

3. Telephone surveyors are allowed to call.

4. Companies where you have existing business relationships

Any company that you have done business with in the past can call. Here are a

couple of tricks that you can play with the solicitors. I got these ideas from the

internet.

1. I am so glad that you called. I have not been able to contact anyone from

your company about the $75,000 claim that I made against you.

2. Act really old and keep saying “WHAT?”

3. Repeat every word they say

4. Tell them that someone just rang the doorbell and put the phone down for

several minutes.

5. Tell them you will have to call them back. Ask for their home phone number

(You won’t get it)

6. Pretend you’re talking in a foreign language (Make it up as you go)

7. Flush the toilet and tell them to hang on for a minute

If you are on Brighthouse, there is a website you can go into and block the

number if it shows on the phone. A lot of calls come through with no number

showing. Call Bright House and they will walk you through it!!!!

Alternative…………….slam the phone down in their ear!!!!!

Over The Hill (Hooray for Our Side)

We’re over the hill but don’t feel sad, This side of the hill ain’t all that bad.

So give us "five" and then a smile, To us who have been here for a while.

With by-pass pain and mended hip, And plumbing fixtures prone to drip,

We all may seem a sorry lot, But we rejoice for what we’ve got.

We have each day and what it brings, And on our pensions live like kings.

For the press that accuses what we take, To coin a clause, "Let them eat cake."

We’ve paid our share for unused knowledge As the kids are now all done with college.

We complain to them about our health, As they worry about our dwindling wealth.

And though our wardrobes may be plain , we’ll suffer no more labor pain.

Now it’s with cane we do our strut, And if we can’t drive, we still can putt.

We’re mean and tough, meet all demands, Why, M&M’s melt in our hands.

Yes, we’re still here, and it does delight us, That you join our fight against arthritis.

But we ask you make a pledge today, That you’ll be careful what you say.

We have to spread "Over the Hill" fear, Or we’ll have those young folks over here.
