July is filled with summer splendors! It's time to stop and savor the everyday miracles
that are all around us ~ songbirds, blue skies, flowers, fresh water, butterflies ~ what can
we buy that is more precious than any one of these? Our culture makes it easy to be
swept up in a current of consumption. And it's nice to live a comfortable existence
surrounded by things that give us pleasure. But it's also comforting to realize just how
little we truly need. July is a good time to make a list of the things that are absolutely
essential to your happiness. How many can be purchased, and how many are so precious
that they couldn't be bought at any price? July has remained stable as months go. It has
always possessed 31 days.
Special Days in July:
For our Canadian residents, Canada Day is the 1st of July. It honors the
day that the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the
Province of Canada were united in one country, called the Dominion of
Canada. We wish them all a Happy Canada Day.
The American Independence Day or the Fourth of July or the
Glorious Fourth, is celebrated all across the United States with
fireworks, parades, barbecue, family get together, carnivals, picnic,
concerts, baseball games along with several political speeches and
public as well as private events, guns and canons.

Manager's Report
HAPPY 4TH
OF JULY
Don’t forget to sign up for Lake Hammock Village’s 4th of July Cook Out. Signup sheets
are in the clubhouse. You must sign up so an accurate count can be made for food/drink purchase.
It is that time of the year to check our homes, carports and lamp posts to see if they are in need
of cleaning and/or repairs. There are several homes that are in need of washing (some only on part of the
home…green is not an attractive color!) As well as there are some lamp posts that are in need of cleaning and painting. Carports are not to be used for ‘storage’ of boxes, etc. Your cooperation in maintaining the appearance of your home with cleaning, repairs and a clean carport will keep up the high standards and attractive park we live in. Thank you.
PLEASE watch your speed and ask your guests to obey the 15 MPH speed limit. Please stop at
the Stop Signs. This also applies to golf carts and bike riders! REMEMBER this also means when entering the front gates! We have had several close calls with cars speeding as they
enter the front gate…. Remember we have walkers, bike riders and golf carts in the same area as you are driving.
GATES We all know that we have had ‘problems’ at various times with our gates. The other
night being one of those times. They are again working properly but I MUST REQUEST that you do NOT use your vehicle to push open the gates or try to force them open when they are
malfunctioning. I witnessed one of our residents doing exactly that! This action could damage the gates mechanism, as well as damage your vehicle. This action does not ‘fix’ the malfunction of the gate! Thank you.
Thank you to the ‘few’ residents who volunteer their time to keep our entrance area outside the
gates and inside the gates, our park streets and the lake area clean of your trash, cigarette butts and debris. Their dedication to keeping Lake Hammock Village attractive and clean is much
appreciated. Thank you!

President’s Report
Happy Birthday/Anniversary
July 1st is the 145th anniversary of the formation of Canada. The year was 1867 and four provinces joined to form the new country. British Columbia refused to join until a railroad was built to the west coast and Newfoundland held out until 1949. Today, Canada is comprised of 10 provinces and 3 territories. So, Happy Anniversary Canada. July 4th celebrates the 236th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Of course, we all know that this is when the 13 colonies declared their independence from England. It is a special day to celebrate a remarkable nationhood. As well, 2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 – the last conflict between our two nations. As history reports, when war was declared a group of American officers were dining at the British fort at Niagara. Once the messenger stated that war had been declared, all parties stood up, raised their glasses in a toast to the President and to the King, shook hands and parted ways. Those were the days of military courtesies. The end of this war saw the establishment of the world’s longest undefended border. And, as of now, almost 200 years of friendship between our countries. So, our family will gather and celebrate July 1st and the values that make us proud to be Canadians. And on July 4th, you and yours will celebrate all that makes America a great nation. May we all take the time to remember how blessed we are. My final thoughts for the month: “Life may not be the party we
hoped for ………but while we are here, we might as well dance!” Dave

Our Independence Day
With our first fourth on that seventh month began
A declaration of how we would forge our life
In signature, John Hancock did lead by action
The beginning of a nation which has firmly stood
As we stop to embrace our Independence Day
We should reflect back from this sixth millennium year
Looking to the many trials we have faced as a country
Most vividly, to that infamous September morn
We have never, and never will succumb to threat
Our rigid foundation is of, by, and for the people
We heed the message of President John F. Kennedy
It is what we do for our country that stands us tall
As good citizens we put our trust in God, and each other
Under one flag we stand, united for all the world to see
Our Stars and Stripes form the Old Glory we so revere
And how gallant are those who march with our colors
As Americans, we hold freedom as a certainty
Our bravest have given their all to this end
If not for their willingness, we would not be
The cost of liberty demands this commitment
So many have endured the precious loss of loved ones
We must stay aware of the tragedy they live with
For they, more than any, feel the total cost of sacrifice
Praise their fallen heroes, they left freedom for us
My Dear Americans, as we take time to celebrate
This independence held so deep in our hearts
I hope that the following thoughts of America
Bring forth emotion, for the USA that we love
We shall always be ‘the land of the free'
We shall always be ‘the home of the brave’
We shall always hear ‘God Bless America’
We shall always love ‘Mom and Apple Pie’

American Symbols
Liberty Bell is a treasured relic of the early days of American independence. It was rung
July 8, 1776, with other church bells, to announce the adoption of the Declaration of
Independence. Its inscription, "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the
inhabitants thereof," is from the Bible (Lev. 25:10).
The Liberty Bell weighs over 2,080 pounds (943 kilograms). The colonial province of
Pennsylvania paid about $300 for it in 1752. Today the bell hangs in Liberty Bell Pavilion,
just north of Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
The Liberty Bell was first cast in England. It broke in ringing after its arrival and was
recast in Philadelphia from the same metal, with the same inscription, in 1753. The Liberty
Bell rang at each successive anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration until 1835. The
bell broke on July 8 that year, while being rung during the funeral of John Marshall, chief
justice of the United States. It became known as the Liberty Bell about 1839, when
abolitionists began to refer to it that way. Previously, the bell had been called the Old
State House Bell.
The Liberty Bell is no longer rung, but it has been struck on special occasions. On June 6,
1944, when Allied forces landed in France, Philadelphia officials struck the bell. Sound
equipment broadcast the tone to all parts of the nation. Independence Hall was the
permanent residence of the bell from 1753 until Jan. 1, 1976, when it was moved to the
pavilion.
Fireworks are combinations of gunpowder and other ingredients that explode with loud
noises and colorful sparks and flames when they burn. Fireworks are also called
pyrotechnics. Fireworks that only make a loud noise are called firecrackers.

Uncle Sam is a figure that symbolizes the United States. The term originated as an
unfriendly nickname for the U.S. government during the War of 1812.
The term "Uncle Sam" was used as early as 1813. In that year, a Troy, N.Y., newspaper
stated that it apparently had arisen because of the initials "U.S." on government wagons.
In 1816, the nickname appeared in a book title, The Adventures of Uncle Sam. It was later
asserted that the term had its origin in a specific person--Samuel "Uncle Sam" Wilson of
Troy, N.Y., who supplied the army with "U.S."-stamped barrels of provisions.
The costume of Uncle Sam, decorated with stars and stripes, originated in cartoons of the
1830's and 1840's. But the figure did not assume its present form until after the Civil
War (1861-1865). In 1961, Congress passed a resolution saluting Samuel Wilson as the
person who inspired America's national symbol.
Flag: Red is for victory, white is for purity, and blue for loyalty. According to legend,
George Washington interpreted the elements of the flag this way: stars were taken from
the sky, the red from the British colors, and the white stripes signified the secession
from the home country.
Independence Day is a good
time to examine who we are
and how we got here.

“Helping Our Neighbors”
This is a committee not affiliated with any group or club here in the community. There are
people who live alone and would not be able to fix meals in an event of illness and that is
when this group will try to help.
The committee would help with meals or snacks during a weekly/short period of time and
maybe this assistance would help the resident get stronger and back to taking care of
themselves a lot faster. The committee would only provide meals, approximately 1-3 days
per week and nothing else.
If you would be willing to help cook meals or know of anyone in this situation that needs
short time assistance please contact Tammy Anthis 353-1959.

Gator Tales Changes
During the next few months hopefully you will notice some changes in our Gator Tales. I
would like to make it more about our park and residents. In order to help with this I am in
need of a reporter and photographer.
The job of the reporter will be to write up articles of the various events happening in LHV
and to interview new residents. The photographer will take pictures of events in the park,
landscape, animals and flowers around our wonderful park.
If you can help in either of these two ways or any other suggestions please let me know.
Please fill out the comment form on the bottom of this page and drop into the comment
box in the clubhouse or at my house (50 Sargent St) or you can email me at
